    Just want to point out that it looks like SOG silently released an update of this knife. On their site, they now have pictures of the G10 version where the clip is vastly improved. Having purchased one in a store recently, I can also say that the flipper tab is very comfortable now. Bonus points to them for listening to feedback and not trying to upsell or anything -- just updating an already good knife to be even better.

    • @cemetarygates82
      @cemetarygates82 11 місяців тому +1

      I can confirm this as I recently picked a red G10 version up and it has the improved pocket clip and the improved texture on the flipper tab.

    Bought this recently (discontinued, S35VN) and the action is really quite good. Very fidget-friendly, good useable blade shape and sharp edge. Fit and finish is great and the little "edge" on the flipper has been ground down a little. Contrasting horizontal and vertical satin finish on blade is nice detail.
    Looking forward to the LT version, probably will have to pick it up.

    Glad you covered this piece...SOG has gotten away from some of core, critical base over the last 5-7 years. They have some classic blades, and I thought simply upgrading some classic models to start would be a step in the right direction. You mentioned the Aegis, which is a perfect candidate for the lock and materials demonstrated here. Getting into flashlights and backpacks while ignoring the core tactical and ex-military audience was a bit ugly. The models are there, just make some nuanced upgrades. They have some new management now, we shall see. Thanks as always, see you on the next.

    I just received my terminus xr s35vn. I have to say I love it! The flipper seems to be filed down better than this one and isn't to sharp at all. Also my blade is extremely centered. I know that I'm gunna get some flack for this but I actually love the thumb stud, its placed fairly well and operates the knife beautifuly! Plus the better steel, I paid 90 for the knife and I think it's a great deal.

    A little while back, I picked up the S35VN & CF/G10 laminate version for $65 and it's been a constant in my EDC rotation. Thankfully the jimping on the tab & spine were both pretty mild out of the box, I guess SOG paid some attention to the users of the first batches/versions. So far it's been an excellent user and very fidgety. I have XXL size hands and for whatever reason I'm able to reverse flick it via the studs with just a shory adjustment period. It makes me happy to see SOG trying to appeal to the enthusiast the last couple years.

    Great review, Nick! I have the SOG Terminus XR with Cryo D2 and Olive Drab G10, and it seems to have fixed the 2 "issues" you mentioned in the orginal version, i.e., the sharp flipper jimping, and the pocket clip style over your CF/G10. A very ergonomic and comfortable knife indeed, and of course, quite sharp out-of-box! Thanks again!

  • @willyboarder73

    When he says the flipper tab is sharp, believe it. I bought this, flipped it several times, then zip, sliced my index finger open on the flipper tab. Brought it to work today and filed it down. I really like this knife, but having an edge on a knife, sharp enough to cut you, that isn't the blade, is unacceptable to me.

    You ever notice that knife guys know somebody that the omega springs on a knife broke but it's never happened to them. I've had countless Benchmade knives without one omega spring breaking. To say it happens quite often is stretching it a bit. Love to see SOG get back into the game of making serious knives. I like this one.

    I absolutely love my red G-10 SOG Terminus with the D2 blade, but the CF version with S35VN is the terminus I own that gets the most time in my pocket. My only gripe is that it says carbon fiber but it is a laminated CF. I wish this would be more clearly spelled out but it seems all knife manufacturers and distributers do this. My dream is that Flytanium comes out with some custom scales and things.

    Given that the current G10/CF version of the Terminus XR has switched to S35VN, i think this is a crazy good value for a knife, provided that you understand the bad/ugly points which Nick has laid out pretty well. Thank you for the review, my Son gifted me this last Christmas, and I absolutely love it. It did not come dull, but I would not consider it sharp either as it came. On mine, when deployed, there is no side to side, or up & down play with the blade, just a really good tolerance. I don't use the thumb tabs, but love the flipper. With the blade facing up, I can get a perfect stabbing grip, without the flipper digging into my thumb.

    Hey Nick , your a bit off on this BDZ-1 steel , it's between AUS8 and VG10 , it's chemically very similar to 8cr13mov and AUS8. I think your getting it confused with CTS-BD1 which is a better steel and cuts closer to D2 (according to Cedric & Ada ). Sog now makes a Terminus XR with D2 steel , it comes with either green or crimson scales and a stonewash blade , I going to buy a crimson one .

    It would be great if an updated version could use a coil spring instead of omega springs. It seems like the axis lock, while fun, has proven finicky enough over the years that an update is due. The Anthem gets it, as does the Manix and similar knives. Otherwise, good job SOG

    I agree with @Copper Spartan. Just because something appears to be redundant, doesn't mean it is. This configuration actually improves function and reliability over a wider range of scenarios. Smart. Then again, if the option of having/using a thumb stud is of no import, then... But it is a shame that SOG didn't use a more ergonomic clip and modified the texturing under the clip. Not smart.

    FYI, there is a version of this knife with Green or Red G-10 handles and D2 steel selling at KnifeCenter.com and bhphotovideo.com. Bhphotovideo.com says the steel is CTS-BDZ1 but I received the knife today and it's D2 which is in the same quality class as CTS-BDZ1 but more well known. This variation cost $50 + s/h + tax, or about $20 less than the version reviewed by Nick. I also imagine that the green/red G-10 handle knives are easier to get in/out of pocket because the carbon-fiber version has grippier scales -- meaning green/red is easier to deploy, I think.

    This is an incredible design I bought the first model that came out in the burgundy color. The only complaint was the sharpening aspect. Now I believe SOG has an upgraded Terminix. I can honestly say the Terminix has a great feel and is extremely comfortable to carry. Anyone looking for a decent priced knife look towards this direction. A good thumbs up and looking for more colors from SOG.

  • @212driller
    @212driller 3 роки тому

    You mentioned the g10 under the clip, as well as the clip shape. If you use the part of the clip that bends out away from your pants and push up on it it will loosen the grip it has on your pants and slides out great. So basically what happens is you have an easily removable knife but it holds on to your pocket really well. Not really a feature most care for but it works just fine.

    If I had 5 minutes with this knife before I ordered one, I would have kept looking. Other than the pocket clip it is fine, I find the clip unfriendly when I’m pulling the knife out of my pocket. There is so many options available to the knife buyer we can get picky, I’m glad I bought the D2/ cheaper version because this wont become my EDC favorite due to the clip. It looks nice next to all my other D2, G10, Chinese flippers and I’m less content with liner locks now so there the terminus XR wants my attention. Keep evolving SOG, one day I might have one in my pocket. Also, not that sharp out of the bubble pack, no big deal I’m an obsessive knife sharpener guy.

    SOG has done a slipjoint version of the Terminus that is popular in the UK. It has an innovative ‘lock’ that leaves the back open and spring free. I’d love to see you review it. I’d send you mine, but the cost of postage to and fro would be more than the knife, and I’m sure SOG’s US distributor would be happy to provide you with one.

    @emersonb5764 3 роки тому +4

    Man, just got the d2/g10 version and it appears they’ve really dropped the ball since a year ago. Pretty big disappointment. One of the worst actions I’ve ever felt in a folder, even after a clean and lube. The washers the bearings ride on are dimpled, and there’s a number 1 stamped (maybe etched, but you can feel it with your fingernail) on the blade pivot, right in the path the bearing balls travel. the thumb studs can sort of over-travel and the lock bar catches the outboard end of the spiral cut by the flipper tab and can stop it from opening or closing, so you have to make a conscious effort to only pull them back half way (which takes a good deal of practice) if you’re wrist flicking it open or closed or else it’ll stop part way.
    Side to side blade play does not seem to go away ever, which I assume is why it had been tightened so much that it dimpled the washers. If I can find some phosphor bronze washers the right size to replace the bearings perhaps it can be redeemed a bit, but not sure I want to put that much effort into it.
    Worth noting also that neither the flipper tab or thumb studs will work to open the blade if one of your other fingers is blocking the axis lock thumb studs from sliding back. With my huge skinny hands this happens often, so again, a conscious effort needs to be made to grip it a certain way or it won’t open.
    And I hate the swooping curve on the clip. The looks don’t bother me but it digs into my palm when trying to unlock the knife, and it can pinch the hem of your pocket up inside the hoop and make it difficult to remove from the pocket in certain situations. Would have much rather seen two 90 bends and keep it closer to the butt of the handle. I guess it’s meant for small hands.
    You’ve got my attention too, Sog. Unfortunately for me that means this is the last Sog I’ll buy. So much potential there, but it’s not going to get any pocket time over here. Maybe it’ll live in a toolbox drawer for when I need something sacrificial to lend out or abuse.

I'm starting to believe the blade is just bent and yours looks exactly like mine, so idk if my eyes are playing tricks or what.1 MORE QUESTION. Is this supposed to be spring assisted? Cause both my Kershaw knifes open so easy with a quick flick, but this one you ALSO have to flick open...Almost like there is no spring. Just got it and thinking about sending it back if that's normal or not.

It's a nice knife made with decent materials and if he does something stupid and breaks it or loses it it's not expensive enough to get upset over lol.

    14:45 Agreed. My FRN Chaparral's lock spring has loosened up dramatically, after a few hundred fidgets. It is now drop-shutty, and doesn't slightly murder my thumb as much when I close it now. My fave office EDC.

    I have the D2 cryo with G-10. The flipper tab is sharp as HELL. I tried to file the flipper tab but the file just kept skating off and wouldn't bite. How friggin' hard is this metal? I finally attacked the flipper with a diamond stone. It is now my second favorite knife after my Benchmade Osborne 940-1.

      Honestly, you can just spray some WD-40 into the pivot and be set. If you talk to anyone with legitimate real world experience (be it knifemaking, gunsmithing, machining, etc) they will tell you that WD-40 is a solid option that does damn near everything you want with little downsides.

D2 on SOG is BTW pretty bad with heat treatment and rolls like heck.I am novice aficcionado...best bang for buck so far has been Manly Wasp in S90. 2nd best was Maileah in AR RPMG.Biggest disappointment Boker petite in VG10 with lock stick and failure and crummy steel.On the way is a Chaparral which I hope will be my #1 EDC.Rgds John

    I LOVED LOVED LOVED this SOG. Yes, the flipper is sharp. Yes, the clip is meh... but it’s sexy and super great action. It WAS one of my favorites of all time. Until a week later when the omega springs both broke. Unlike Kershaw, where you can email them and they will gladly just send you a spring when one breaks, SOG refuses to send springs- so back it went to Cabela’s cemetery of broken stuff.

      Not to say anything of Rike, Ruike, WE, Firebird/Ganzo, Reate, and the numerous other manufacturers putting out things that are flat out better than most production knives made in the US.
      So what’s your point

    • @Dynotop1a

      I have had mine for months now, and after what must be easily thousands of openings, the springs finally failed last week. What exactly happened when you asked for new springs? Did SOG just say no because it wasn’t covered by their warranty? Would you have had to send in the entire knife and you just didn’t want to? I’m genuinely interested. I love the knife. The lock itself has proven to be plenty strong. Just wish they would use different springs like it seems Hogue has done. I fully intend to buy the d2 version anyway. It seems to solve most of my issues with the original. I just would like to know your experience with them so I can take the best course of action.

      @@Rushil69420I also don't mind some of the Chinese knives. And I don't think it's origin had anything to do with my failure. It's an inherent flaw in the omega spring design. The Spyderco Manix design with single coil spring is superior in longevity! Or the plunge lock on Kershaw autos.

    I don't understand why some people fuss over CF overlay on G10. Sure a full CF scale is nice, but the physical properties are similar and there aren't tons of benefits to Carbon fiber vs G10, with the main difference being aesthetic, so if you get the same look but its cheaper to do it a certain way, how is that a bad thing?

    Ok it’s not that surprising that they made a great one that is causing some stir. They have made incredibly over the top knives when spyderco was only making a police model and sharpeners and in the early 90’s and untitled around early 2000’s, they made semi-city japan made, high grade steels, with incredible manufacturing and almost gents carry beautiful handles when I could only remember BM being the ones with aluminum handles and tanto blades (even though Lynn Thompson likes to tell people he brought the tanto back... as a Japanese man with deep interest in Japanese history I’d like to say that there were many people liking the tanto for years and they have always been considered tactical as they were introduced after the helmet was being worn during war... that wasn’t Lynn Thompson, sorry Lynn). I Have some SOG’s that I collected after I found a knife that belonged to The one and only George Lucas, and I had to start looking at why such a smart man would carry a tanto and leave it at a security check ( my roommate was the security guard that got to take it when he declined to put it in his car and opted to let the guard keep it!!!) SOG is a knife Carried by people who know a thing or two about folders and they just haven’t been keeping relevant with all the “trends” that may or may Not stay around forever. Sorry about the long paragraph lol. Love SOG and appreciate them staying in the game! Stay sharp Batman.

    My Sog Terminus XR spring failed after about 1 year with very light use. Admittedly I do fidget with it but not incessantly. The Sog website states because of a new stay at home directive until at least 8/31 They will not be on able to process any warranty claims. They suggest we check back after 8/31 for further. Can anybody please supply me with a link of the best replacement springs that would work for my knife. I will be happy to replace the damn thing myself. I’m just worried of getting another inferior spring again or one that won’t work for my knife. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.
