Thanks for always doing disassemblies. I don't often watch them, but when I do, I'm always really appreciative of the time you put into them, especially knowing they don't get many views. They're great when I have problems with a disassembly, or as in this instance, when I'm curious about the internal functionality. The only way I could picture this working was a channel for the lock bar so the flipper rode outside of it, and that's exactly what they did. Very cool.
It's the Achiles Heel of both the Terminus and Benchmade offerings for sure. I was initially turned off by the breaking of the springs in my Terminus at first. And one of my Benchmade knives also had the same exact failure, at the lowest point of the curve of both brand's springs. I am pretty sure that both brands are using the same supplier and overall size of springs. They look and feel identical. I am overlooking this flaw for my Benchmades because otherwise I am in love with the action and ease of use. I abused my Terminus and the Benchmade that broke, flipping them to no end- so indeed, you can expect breakage under these conditions- but average users will have no issue with them.
I’m usually big on disassembling my knives. I bought this and went to disassemble it, but the pivot screw was so secured in there that it broke two of my t6 bits without the screw budging. I mostly tried the clip side like this video. I tried the other side too but nothing budged. The knife is great, I’m just disappointed that I can’t take it apart to clean/lube it well.
I'm with you. Same here re: bent/broken bits. It's not the bits, it's the loctite. The real problem is that for the price point, the blade opening is not smooth and easy. Feels like there is drag. Also, the trick with this knife is to push down on the flipper and not to pull back like most of them. Many knives out there for for half or a third the price open much more smoothly. I think the resistance and drag is the reason so many people want to open this thing up. For the money, Benchmade Bugout is a better spend. For less, go Civivi, WE, Kershaw Blur, or others.
Not necessarily the bits. I dripped a cheap bit as well as a Wiha trying to get my pivot out. I ordered a 10 pack of the Wiha T6's to see how many I have to sacrifice.
I did the same, until I applied a bit of heat with a blowdryer and gave a rap on the T6 screwdriver with a rubber mallet. Then the screw came out smoothly. Heat helps a lot with all this blue Loctite.

I've wanted one of these for a while now and sprung for the cryo damascus and carbon fiber one. Out of the box, the action feels like it was put together with a hammer and dunked in cat litter before shipping out. Highly disappointed as it was my birthday gift to myself. I hope anything I can do will help any. I wanna like this knife!
That’s an arc lock it functions different but essentially does the same thing, the new XR is straight back and forth just like an axis instead of arcing up and down on a hinge
Thanks for helping me clean the action of my Terminus XR! I have the S35VN version and it's quite nice. Just a tiny gripe: it's sharpened almost at a 25° angle per side. I guess the bevel will become huge if I'll try to reset it to 22° per side, hmm?
Just what i was looking for gonna swap scales around i prefer the carbon fiber scales over the g10 but like the Damascus blade on the new one i picked up.

I can't find a T6 driver that is strong enough to even loosen the screws up. i've stripped about 3 different tools to hell. Any advice for me? anything you can share is appreciated, thank you!
I just disassembled mine tonight and had the same issue. I needed two T6 drivers and I needed to heat the knife up with a blow dryer for the thread lock to losen. It was white-ish color thread lock. I had so much torque on the driver that the tip of the T6 is now torsioned. Mine is the LTE version, not sure if that matters or not

Got mine last weekend. Not quite para 3 lightweight or my 940-2. on sog have to manipulate button just right for smooth and always quiet close.sog has a nice sound on lockup. pocket clip enourmous and does not slide in shorts easily nor does it slide out very easily for that matter. sog will sorta spydie flick after depressing button. Also the flicker(deployment) tab is a little rough on metro fingers and thumb. Guesse I am not sn operator after all.
I agree @ 200mfromocean, just got mine in S35vn and it’s nice. Adding it into my edc rotation. the thumb stud and flicker are pretty rough. But I actually like this knife, so I committed to carry it for 30 days,,,
I'm looking in to buying one in G10 green I've seen them but was un sure and not I'm like the price is good and seems like a good EDC so why not and the deassemble video also helps with wanting to buy one thanks Nick.
Thanks for a great review. It has proven to be most helpful. Recently I bought a SOG Terminus XR and right out of the box the action was horrible! It is so stiff I cannot open the knife with the flipper and I cannot even move the blade with the thumb studs. It is useless. Since it was new I didn't do anything to it before contacting SOG. I wrote to them 2 times had have not heard from them. So much for SOG customer service. After watching your video I disassembled the knife and cleaned and lubed it as shown in your video. Thank you again. I can feel no great difference. The flipper still doesn't work, nor do the thumb studs. Since SOG isn't going to help, what do I do next? Do I need to sand and polish parts? Do you have any videos covering this process? Thanks again. Update - SOG eventually contacted me and sent me a new knife so kudos to SOG for that. The new knife is better but falls short of my expectations, which admittedly may be unreasonable. It does not open freely. It will sometimes but seems to require a forceful flip. I was going to take this one apart and see what is happening inside but the pivot fastener is locked up tight. I don't know if SOG used red Loctite or what. I have bent the splines(?) on 3 Torx wrenches and it is still stuck.

I have another Terminus that’s got the Damascus blade and that thing is fkn butter dude, perfect. QC at SOG has come a long way but still need to keep their foot on the gas
The initial production run, which I also bought, wasn't tuned properly IMHO, terribly stiff detent. A year later and I bought a couple more and they are perfect, feel like a Hogue, good retention unlike Benchmade but not a thumb buster like my first.
I just got the carbon fiber xr with the s35vn.. I’m not a fan of the liner. I’m thinking about taking an old terminus xr and swapping out the metal liners to put on carbon fiber. Just annoys me I paid 140 bucks and it doesn’t have the “crisp feel” that the original terminus xrs have
My Sog Terminus XR spring failed after about 1 year with very light use. Admittedly I do fidget with it but not incessantly. The Sog website states because of a new stay at home directive until at least 8/31 They will not be on able to process any warranty claims. They suggest we check back after 8/31 for further. Can anybody please supply me with a link of the best replacement springs that would work for my knife. I will be happy to replace the damn thing myself. I’m just worried of getting another inferior spring again or one that won’t work for my knife. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Can anyone tell me what Brand Bits he’s using. I have just received this knife and want to get some better lube in it and my T6 bit took off all the small screws but won’t take out the pivot. I’m worried it’s going to strip but I’m sure it’s a T6 as well
@@mungo75 I was sooooo into this knife... The carbon/G10 scales, the skeletonized brushed steel liners, the jimping, the blade, the action... I even went so far as to turn the hardware on a drill to get them shiny steel. If you just want to keep it in the pocket and not constantly deploy the blade, it might be okay.
Ok my terminus has been heavily used worked great from new but must have got gunk in it. Hmm looking at this I think it’s beyond my capability I don’t do springs. Think I’ll try soaking it in alcohol they soak in graphite. Taking it apart will be a last resort.
Here in the uk we have a slipjoint version of the Terminus, but it has an unusual ‘lock’ mechanism, that doesn’t use a back spring. Any chance you could review it? I’d send you mine, but it might be easier to get SOG to donate one in the US.

Hi Nick.A quick and hopefully useful observation.I removed the appalling clip and attempted to reinsert the long screw....the screw is effectively only held in place/threaded ,via the clip,so removed it and rethreaded onto loose clip,to avoid loss.If you know of any aftermarket replacement,kindly advise.Tks John

Don't like the "deep pocket clip". Jeans pocket hem rode up and over the clip inside so it "locked" on pants. Not a good thing if you need this knife in a hurry.

Kershaw springs do break, and at least the company is willing to ship them to customers when asked. SOG failed me, but the average user will be in good shape :0)

@@pop4803 Well don't flip it in and out all day long. I now have five Benchmade Axis knives, and have already had to send one back- under a month of use. The Axis springs, and the SOG ones are nearly identical. The point of failure on both brands was the very bottom of the loop in each spring. I also have a feeling that the Benchmade replacement springs from ebay will work for the SOG.

You might want to invest in better bits. I know sometimes small cheap bits can just go to crap on things that are put in well.
Buy Wiha bits, they will outlast the knife.

Sog has had a version of the Axis(Arc-Lock) for at least ten years ....... I have had the Sog Vulcan for at least 10 years

Axis style locks are super strong but after seeing the complexity here, I'm leaning back to Cold Steel Tri Ad locks.

I've had pocket knives for 15 years or more and never took them apart they work just as good as when I bought them
some people like taking things apart and putting them back together

any luck ever getting the screws out? i too and destroying every T6 i have.. very frustrating...
