    Whenever Brian Phillips publishes a video which features a plane which we already have, we watch it with eagle eyes! We know that we are not the only ones... We always learn so much much more about our planes, all the details we were not aware about, we might adjust the settings, the CG of the battery etc. etc. Brian, you are our RC godfather! Thank you for your detailed videos (build, set-up, flight and advice)!!! And yes, we love our Pitts S-1S very much, another cool E-flite plane! Cheers from Switzerland!

    This plane is my daily flyer. Two years after starting the hobby I'm now on 850mm Pitts number four. It's been an interesting journey and I've learned a lot about the repair and replacement end of the hobby and the often ridiculous amount of time involved with such endeavors. My short take on this model is that it likes to be flown aggressively. Inspect the model prior to that aggressive flight so there are no sudden surprises. The servos and landing gear both benefit from upgrades. Replace the clevis(s). Softer tires? Yes! As a beginner the plane is always fun to try to fly and will even leave a nice red splotch on the pavement if you hit it hard enough.

    I maidened my Pitts 850 last night, finally, thanks to these northern Illinois winds taking a brief rest! You are so right on dialing in some expo. I thought 15% would do it but this plane is way responsive. Next time out I will probably end up at 70% with 40% expo for low rates and high rates will probably increase expo to 40% but leave rudder at 0% expo. I fly almoset exclusively from grass and this plane does great with virtually no nose-over that prevents me from enjoying my warbirds. This Pitts is a rocket even on 3S. Tame flying on a 2200 yields 4 minutes flight time. Im going to drop a 3S 2700 in it and should get 6 to 7 minutes. The CG will benefit as well. And just as you said, the batt needs to hang off the back of the tray. The plane has a wide CG range and is virtually the same with and without a batt installed so a heavier batt would be fine as long as you compensate on landing approach with a little hotter throttle and a tad more angle of attack to control rate of decent. For size and durability, this is a great plane with a very good finish. For added "pop" I gave it a few coats of Pledge floor finish. Looking at a few more days of high winds and hopefully will get the red bugger to the strip on Sunday. Thanks for the review. It helped seal the deal for me. By the way, Im not tempted to do flaperons on this plane. Just wouldnt be right, kind of like putting pineapple on a pizza LOL. Happy landings!

    I maidened it today with 8-10 mph gusts and she flies AMAZING! What a blast this plane is! It flies so good does everything I can do with it and more and just looks SO good in the sky! Thrilled with it! I practiced a ton in realflight take offs and landings were so easy with it! Thanks for all your video's Brian so HELPFUL! (Oh and I crashed the F15 Jet today, was flying it SO GOOD wide open got it way too far out and in front of an 8am sun and completely blinded I lost orientation and she dropped like a rock. Fortunately the only thing that got damaged was the fuselage! Wings, servos, gear, canopy all perfect, had an extra nose cone I had ordered. The new Fuselage was $42.00 so I already ordered it, it's worth it.

      AWESOME! Glad you had good luck with the Pitts! Sorry to hear the F-15 got lost in the sun. IF you have this happen again, try to close ONE eye, and sometimes you can open it back up when you get past the sun...might help to avoid the next incident.
      Glad you're getting in some good flights!!!

    I had the smaller E-Flite Pitts and they are not the easiest to land. Even if you do land then smooth the landing gear isn’t enough to keep you straight. If you buy this one look for a wider area to land if you’re a noob like me. Great flying as always…easily my fav RC channel

    Great to see you finally got one. On grass this plane take off and lands great without bouncing bad or being squirrely. Cool you did like flaperons on this plane but in my experience it slows down enough to do nice landings. I think it's almost to easy to fly. I did replace the tires to softer rubber tires and landings are even better.
    I did consider to put in an AR637T and Avian 45A ESC but It doesn't open up in an easy way to pull out the motor and ESC.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому +1

      Totally agree about flapperons. It was not needed, and kinda clunky BUT with a virgin Rx, it would have been good ;)
      As for the Avian, that would be cool, but I love this plane as it. The telemetry would be nice, and this thing would probably fly backward ;)

    Wish I'd found your vid before I put this plane together & maidened. I did not do flaperons, but after the first two landings today with the 4S battery installed, I'm thinking about it...or dropping to 3S. Or both. I had to fly the spuds off of this for 4S; it feels like there's just too much weight for the lift. It'd be nice to be able to calm it down for landing and a more scale performance envelope. I triple checked CG, but it flew nose heavy. Anyway, I had all the same issues during assembly - Yeah, instruction manual was weak. I took the same decisions you made, except for leaving off the top wing. I wish I'd thought of that. I have big hands, and getting that bind plug in was a bit of a challenge. Didn't know I could just push a button! Thanks!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому

      We're glad you found the video helpful! So many details are really glossed over in the manuals, and we try to share all the steps, when possible. The flapperons, in my opinion were NOT super helpful, but If you like the idea of having them, I don't think I gave up a lot to have them...so fair trade off...but also, as for control-ability...if you make her a BIT more tail heavy, she'll get pitch sensitive in a hurry. If you want her to "glide" out of throttle, better get/keep her more on the NOSE heavy side of things.
      Good luck!!!

    • @spud13x13

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the reply, Brian! I flew her on 3S a couple of days ago and results were much more to my liking. Still was a workout given my skill level, but I'll get there! I did move the CG back, but it was still just a bit nose heavy. Based on your feedback, I'm glad I didn't push it too far back. Looking forward to watching through all your videos, and to the ones yet to come...

    Brian - just putting my 850mm together this evening and ran into the same problem on the top/bottom aileron linkage - I too - was about to drill out the top connector. It looks like you've installed the clevis and z-bend for the Aileron linkage upside down (see manual page 7). The Z-bend goes into the top connector and the snap clevis is shown on the bottom. :)

    I put an avian 60 amp esc in this so I would have pack voltage and I works great on 3S but when I put a 4s pack in it the temperature just kept rising, even just cruising around and not pushing it. Makes me wonder how the stock 45 amp esc holds up to 4s. It’s fun on 3s but it really comes alive on 4s, it spins ridiculously fast. I melted a vent hole in the front at the bottom where the vent is molded in the body. Hopefully that gets the airflow over the esc to cool it. Awesome plane though, I really enjoy the way it flies. Keep up the great videos, I watch them all!

      I think you misread that. I melted the hole myself with a small shim heated with a torch so that the esc could breath. Lol
      I’m just wondering why the esc get so hot on 4s when it is rated for 4s. I feel like the Avian 60 may be problematic and need larger heat sink fins. Maybe I’ll just go back to the stock esc and just stick to the timer but man do I hate the EC3 connectors. We’ve really gotten spoiled with the SMART technology from Horizon and Spektrum. Cheers and happy 4th to you and the family!

    Gday Brian how are you? Totally unrelated comment however I do love the pitts.. But I just wanted to thank u once again. I've been flying everyday, I'm very impressed with myself. I've come leaps and bounds. Yeah I'm doing stuff I don't think I should be able to yet. Inverted, rolls, loops... But they way I know something is progressing is because I out of safe more and more often. I'm pretty sure the mode I'm flying in has no assistance from the vtol side of my plane if that makes sense. It just helps with landing cause I live on the side of a hill. Thanks for your influence thanks heaps...

      COOL! Good for you Stewart! It's cool when you can start to see the improvements. It's not an overnight thing for most...for me, it took about 3-4 years to get "comfortable" and even with that, now at 6 years in, I still get NERVOUS with an important, or FAST landing plane... so much to keep in control very quick, with very little room for error.
      Keep at it, and soon you'll be flying anything you want!!!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому +2

      I agree! This size is great, better for storage and transport, but it is a bit harder to get them to fly as good as a 1.2m or 1.3m...but then they're more powerful, and more expensive...
      I'm with you - Love this size, but I too want flaps and retracts and LED's on pretty much ALL planes.

(Smart Design Shelf Liner is available on Amazon and comes in many colors) No velcro required on the pack and it really holds on to the battery wrap, so less likely to slip out from the grip of the straps. :)

    Brian, Marked the CG 86 +/- 3mm like the manual said, with a 3S 2200 I have to hang the battery back more than half way on the tray! Secured it with velcro and a strap but dang, wondering if adding weight to the back end and moving the battery forward to have it more on the tray is a better solution. (wish the tray was LONGER!) Tried checking CG with a 4S and it's not much different. The ESC doesn't sit up there very well either, it's too long to sit straight and is kitty corner in the nose and the double sided tape doesn't hold well at all up there (Not a huge deal). Pulling the battery connector off the battery easily knocks that tape loose leaving the esc unsecured... For the slots the tray goes into take your black sharpie and make two little lines where the tray goes into the slots to make it easier to see.

    Subject: Pitts S-1S 850mm CG
    Robert,
    The new CG is listed as 70+/- 3mm.
    A few other small manual issues that we are in process of correcting:
    The plane has the following

    BL15 motor 880Kv EFL8463
    40 amp ESC EFLA1140W
    SPM A330 Servos SPMSA330
    Prop is 11x7 EFLP11070

    The prop/spinner assembly in the manual does not show the correct prop adapter design nor the included washer. That washer goes between the spinner cone and the prop hub for the correct spacing.

    The landing gear mounting screws are listed in the manual as qty3 2x10mm self-tapping screws.
    They are actually qty3 3x15mm countersunk machine screws.

I have taken flaperon and also as described in the manual with 1 aileron / 1 flap. Always have the same problem at pos 1 and pos 2 . Can you help me how I can set it that both ailerons go down when I set the flaps to pos1 and pos 2. Greetings from Germany

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +1

      1) Did you separate the connections to the "Y" Cable going to the ailerons?
      2) If you have it all right, the Ailerons will both go the same direction, and the flaps will make them go opposite...if so, reverse one of the ailerons channels, and you'll be fixed...then go back into Forward programming and make sure your AS3X and SAFE are correction the right direction.
      Good luck!

    Brian, enjoyed watching your videos . have a few questions. I will be buying the carbon cub 1.2 and would like to know how long will it take to charge the 2200ma 3s batteries with the included usb charger? how would that compare to using the s1100 -100w hobby grade one? Also do you know how long this battery will stay fully charged before it starts to discharge for storage? (factory default settings ) thanks

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому

      About an hour is a safe estimate, but you will charge less if the battery is not fully discharged.
      If and when you get into your second and third planes, you will want to get better chargers ;) The cell count will force you into nicer chargers, eventually, but I want to encourage you...it's like this...
      New Plane = Fun
      Batteries = Not Fun, but you need it!
      Charger = Not Fun, but you need it!
      Transmitter = Not Fun, but you need it!
      You can get the batteries, chargers, and transmitters (good ones) for about price of 2-5 planes, so when you're new, try to keep plane choices to what batteries you have, and make sure you LOVE it enough to justify that relatively large expense, but here's what I suggest. When you DO get a GOOD ONE, get a GOOD ONE, don't get a crappy one that's gonna cause the whole experience to suck. I've played that game, and it's a HUGE PIA...you won't probably believe me until you do it yourself, but I can give you cheap advice that's very valuable to your bottom line. When you're ready to get a good charger, get a good one, and when you're ready for a new plane, get a good battery. It's better to have TWO good batteries than SIX crappy ones. Six is harder to keep up with (it takes time to get six ready) and I can promise you, you will have a better experience with TWO good lipos for the same price as SIX crappy, but cheap ones. You will be in the air probably about the same time, but the TWO good ones will be easier to transport, and easier to charge, and they will last more cycles and longer in storage.
      Hope this advice is helpful to you, but I know that everyone's situation is different.
      Happy flying!

      P.S. It's normal that the AS3X won't work on one of the ailerons if you take a BNF and make flapperons without a full factory reset on the Rx.

    Stupid question. The + expo is less or more sensitive?

    • @belowme70-1
      @belowme70-1 3 роки тому +1

      On a Spektrum Tx adding positive expo makes it increasingly less sensitive (in short).
      The only stupid question is one not asked, hope you don't mind my chiming in btw lol.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому

      Depends on Brand - Spektrum is like this...
      The + Calls out MORE EXPO, which means the center of the sticks will become more and more DEAD with a higher expo....while Futaba is opposite, if I understand correctly.
      Here's a tip. TEST my comment to learn this for yourself. It'll be a simple exercise you can do in 3 minutes...
      1) Power up the radio and a plane of your choosing and throttle cut, so you can do it inside...
      2) Position the plane with the tail TOWARD you so you can see the elevator and rudder clearly.
      3) Jump into expo, and set the expo to 90% on the elevator.
      4) Move the elevator back and forth through the WHOLE range of the stick throw.
      5) Now change 90% to 45% (half the first)...
      6) Move the elevator back and forth through the WHOLE range of the stick throw.
      7) Now change 45% to 20% (half the second)...
      8) Move the elevator back and forth through the WHOLE range of the stick throw.
      9) Now change 90% to 45% (half the first)...
      10) Now see how that CHART corresponds to the output of the control surface ;)
      You learned a new trick today!!!

      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому +1

      You would have ZERO problems with hand launch, and if you can tolerate a nose overs, tall grass would be no problemo for landings.
      The power to weight ratio is so good, you could just hammer-head it right out of your grip.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC thanks Brian. Just about to fix my top wing onto this bird. Really enjoying the build and using your video as my guide. I fitted the prop like you did but I have similar feelings woundering if it will eventually spin loose as there's no mechanical grip on the smooth prop face against the rough face of the spinner or any use of that hexagon cut out inside the prop. Did you ever have any problems with that prop? Any mods I can make?

    Bought an AVIAN ESC to add telemetry to my Pitts 850. The factory fitted AR631 should be able to do this.
    After installing the AVIAN ESC 45 AMP, the servos start to twitch/jitter. It is independent of how many or which servos are plugged in. The engine runs, the servos can also be controlled, but twitch/jitter. Once you have commanded full deflection on all servos, it stops briefly, but then starts again with control commands. Does anybody has an idea what the problem is?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      Try configuring the POWER for the BEC. If that doesn't work, you need to get with Spektrum on this issue. Don't loose your plane over it!!!
      I wonder if you're not running the BEC high enough.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the help. Tried to program the ESC using the sticks and I can get into the menu, but programming is not possible, and the menu has 16 instead of the expected 13 menu items. I'm now reporting to Spectrum...

    • @Pras33333
      @Pras33333 2 роки тому

      After getting a second ESC showing the same problem, I figured out the issue.
      If an Avian Smart ESC is connected to an AR631 (Pitts 850 BNF), the frame rates change from 22 to 11ms (but the Pitts have analog servos installed!)! No idea why this is, but this is causing the servos to twitch. Attention, the servos can be damaged! I had to replace one because it burned out. With the E-Flite (not Smart) ESC the problem does not exist.
      To solve the problem you have to get the programming adapter for the receiver and unlock it with an update. After that you can change the frame rates via forward programming and the problem is solved.
      P.S.: The manual of the Avian ESC does not match the actual menu in the controller. There are actually 16 menu items! But at least you can now configure the ESC via the transmitter.

    Flaps are a waste of time on these light, large wing area planes, try spoilerons ie reverse flaps (ailerons going up) makes the landing and slow flight way way more stable. I was surprised how good they land, just the perfect descent flight.

      If you need to see, there's a link in the video description (like if you were going to buy it...) click that, then scroll down to the manual and you can see it. We almost always cover this at the very end of a build, but once in a blue moon, we will miss it, and I apologize if we did here...in those cases, there's either no way to really adjust it with the battery location, and then our MAIDEN FLIGHT video would help you see what you want to see, if you prefer NOT to follow that link, and check the manual.
