From the Field -- E-Flite 850mm Pitts S-1S Flight Review (The RC Geek)

  • Here's my review on the E-flite 850mm Pitts S-1. This is a really fun little airplane that looks absolutely amazing. It is legitimately the smoothest foam airplane that I've come across to date, it's pretty incredible how smooth it is. My aerobatic game is pretty rusty...or maybe I should say non-existent, but it is fun to do some snap rolls and such and practice some maneuvers I don't get to do with the warbirds and jets. Oh, and this airplane will knife edge for days! Just like the UMX. :) My full article with CG, throws and Dx file at: thercgeek.com/EFPitts

      Bipes are normally tail heavy, not nose heavy. I have 3 different types and every one had issues with tail weight. My Waco by Dynam was a hog. I added a good amount of weight to its front cowl.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  3 роки тому

      It really depends on the airplane and the manufacturer. Dynam typically states a too far aft cg based on my experience, so I’m not surprised by your experience there.

    There is another RC Geek in the UK. They do balsa planes not foam. Not that it matters. My wife ordered this plane from Amazon for me. I have the Larger Waco and the Hyperbipe from Hobby King. I restored that back from an atrocious paint job some dummy blasted it with. I hand cut all new decales for it, it came out well. Thanks for the tips. My biggest question is whether or not it's tail heavy like most biplanes. I need more 2200 batterys now. Three of my planes use that battery now.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  3 роки тому

      I didn’t find it tail heavy at all and in fact had the battery fairly far back in the airplane even.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! If you’re a proficient flyer, you should be fine with it. The hardest part of flying it is landing it. The key is to land it more like a jet and basically three point the touch down. If you try to land it like a traditional tail dragger, you’ll end up hot in the landing.

    What measurement are you using for the cg on this plane I've heard alot of conflicting information saying the recommended is not correct on the instructions. A proper measurement would really set me at ease before my maiden

    • @Thercgeek

      86mm as measured from the wing top LE aft. I have it in the write up on my site: thercgeek.com/2019/12/e-flite-pitts-s-1s-850mm-assembly-flight-review/

      I believe that AS3X can be turned on and off if you set that up in the forward programming menu. Agreed on the wheels, they’re almost always too hard on these models.

    Great flyer... wheelpants that hold axle end shaft is kinda weak and can let axle slip out and cock wheel sideways locking up wheel after hard landings... be a where if this!!!... but love this plane... bought back up after bad crash... my error...I like it so much... and so handsome in the sky... grey or blue sky!!!.... fixed up original and it flys super!!

    Could you ever maybe explain rates and expo and what they mean? A simple breakdown for the Uber beginner?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому

      Aircraft have a rate command system. So, when you provide a control input, you are commanding a rate. For example, if you give a roll command, the speed of the roll is proportional to amount of stick input you provide. Small input = slow roll, large input = fast roll. Where the expo comes in is that it allows you to tune the rate response to your liking. By default, it’s a linear relationship but if you like the max deflection response but want a little more deadband around the small stick inputs, expo is used to tune that. The amount of Expo is a personal preference to get the desired feel from the control system you’re looking for.

      Sounds like you could dig right in and immediately benefit from a rc flight simulator. I know I have put in many hours and have yet pulled off a successful flight. It seems my problem isn’t so much the handling of the bird but more so keeping control over the radio and receiver connection and finishing a flight before she’s to far gone.

    Hi Chris, thank you for all of your reviews. This review is what convinced me I had to pick this baby up and so ready to do the maiden this weekend. I do have a question about the CG on this model. Were you able to get the CG based on the guides measurement of 86mm? I did notice that your batter is a bit off the tray on the back. The other issue I'm having is that i have like 3 3S 3000mah batts and want to use them on the plane. I looked at the optional parts section in the guide and they do recommend using my battery model with the plane. My only concern is I've seen others mention the CG is not correct at 86mm but somewhere closer to 70-73mm. I'm able to balance the plane at the 86mm per the guide but my battery is almost at the end of the tray to get it balanced? I may need to extend the tray so it has something to rest on and secure in place. Any suggestions?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому +1

      If you lift up the airplane with your fingertips on the pins that the cotter pins go through on the upper wing, that’s a pretty good way to check the Cg. I found the cg in the manual felt good to me. On the battery, if the tray is t working, you can always ditch it and Velcro the battery to the floor of the fuselage.

    • @lifeinrc9051
      @lifeinrc9051 4 роки тому

      @@Thercgeek Thanks Chris for the fast reply. I can't take the tray off because the BNF came with the rx glued to the floor. But what i can do is use something to extend the tray length back so i have a way to add a second strap to secure the battery. It's not too far back, it's about 1 inch forward of the servos. Once i figure out what I do I'll share the information with you so that in the future if anyone is using larger batteries they use the setup I come up with. I am very happy to know that that manual CG specs worked for you.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому +1

      @@lifeinrc9051 Ah, that's right. I forgot about the Rx. You could always move it, but yeah those things are glued in like crazy, haha! Extending the tray sounds like a good idea. Could probably even just use some popsicle sticks or something like that. Wouldn't take much. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

    Hi, I wanted to add a comment because I have been dutifully waiting for this plane to be delivered for 8 MONTHS now. It was on backorder when I purchased it in Nov '22, then it changed to "discontinued" a few months ago. Horizon support assured me it is still available and will be delivered, yet since that time, they keep moving the delivery date back each month. They've definitely got my money...no Pitts here. Wondering if anyone else has had this experience?
