No one really pointed out but, if you remember the flashbacks from Season 3, when Karasuno was bad, Daichi was also being a ball boy in the Karasuno practices, which is probably why he's such a good passer now
I sympathize a lot with Kageyama's former teammates. When you got a relationship with someone for 3 years and you can't make it work, but he turns around and begins adapting his behavior and working on their toxic traits, it eats at you. You start wondering "damn, was it me? Could I have done something different? Did I exhaust all options?" It's no surprise they're still carrying that baggage.
Exactly. Kindaichi and Kunimi were Kageyama's spikers, but they couldnt get him to play well with them. It must chaffe so much, to think that he actually could, just not with *them* . I love the way that those emotions were honored, because Kageyama was a jerk, and they were too, and they just didnt work well due to personality, personal history, lack of compromise etc
35:04 Coach, Kageyama is actually smiling because he understands the value of Hinata being a ball boy. While Kageyama is competing with Hinata, he's also a person that wants other people to get better, just like Hinata does. Kageyama would never get happy that Hinata wasted his time. That's why he smiles, he understands that he grew in some way while being a ball boy.
huh? wasnt it because the ball was insanely easy to hit and he was thrilled because he was playing with all these good players? From what i remember, Kageyama has no clue that hinata sneaked into the camp (kageyama isn't in the same camp as tsukishima and hinata btw). So for him its more about the thrill of getting to play with "equals" rather than what he has been playing at the time. (not gonna spoiler but it makes sense with what happens in the next episode during the training match with dateko).
@@stylebydefault8315 Nope, that's an entirely different timing. Here Kageyama smiles after seeing Hinata's serious expression about being a ball boy, because Kageyama knows that it doesn't matter what Hinata is doing, he's gonna find a way to improve somehow.
@@stylebydefault8315 What are you talking about? Hinata skeaking into the camp or not doesn't matter, what Kageyama knows is that he was a ball boy and he understands that this probably made Hinata a little better on his receives, at the very least, on his vision of the court as that is very necessary to being a good ball boy.
28:39 - "Just when Hinata's trying to do the right thing, he gets put down." Hinata wasn't actually getting put down! Kunimi and Kindaichi (onion-top, carrot-top, etc) were _both_ teammates with Kageyama, some of those who refused to hit his sets. Kindaichi was still beating himself up over that, and feeling guilty, and Kunimi recognized this -- so he diffused the tension to try and make Kindaichi feel better. Talking about how Seijoh was going to crush Karasuno the next time they play was more along the lines of competition and respect, almost friendship, not a diss -- and a way of making Kindaichi feel less vulnerable. The "see ya" at the end further cements the respect and blooming friendship between all of them (and the healing of past hurts). 😊
Atsumu is the furthest thing from insecure and wanting to get the position by making Kageyama doubt himself. It's sort of the opposite. It's more he's taking offense at Kageyama not enjoying the position Atsumu loves so much. In his eyes, Kageyama looks like he's having fun on the left, but stressed as a setter, so why is Kageyama a setter if he doesn't enjoy it? Why should he compete with someone who isn't invested? He loves the sport and wants play with people who love it. He just has no filter.
Totally agree. But to be honest, Atsumu doesn't make the best of first impressions. His character development is similar to Oikawa. You just end up liking him as you learn more about him
the goody two shoes comment is related to it oo, kageama changed his "king" style into giving everyone easy passes, while atsumu always works his hardest to bring his best game, like his comment about good setters making hitters better. it kinda makes kageyama look like a lazy talented setter compared to him since all he realy does is making constant easy tosses i know i might have not explained the best, so excuse me, hope you get my point
Because Atsumu thinks Kageyama doesn't enjoy playing as a setter doesn't mean it's the case. Kageyama enjoys being a setter more than everyone else, it's extremely important to him. He just doesn't express his emotions.
@@Nunelii No one is actually saying Kageyama doesn't enjoy being a setter, but that's how it looks to Atsumu. If you saw someone having fun doing one thing, and stressed doing another, it's actually kind of the nice thing to do to say "wouldn't you have more fun over there rather than doing the thing that makes you look stressed?" Atsumu is a jerk in the way he says things, but he's not really malicious or trying to bring people down, he's just saying what he's thinking without considering how it comes across or what Kageyama might/might not be feeling based on what he's seen. And what he sees is Kageyama looks stressed while setting and happy while spiking.
you shouldn't over explain a character from knowledge you got from future episodes even if you're frustrated that they're being "misunderstood", let reactors discover those aspects by themselves like we did
1. Atsumu's "goody-two-shoes" means that Kageyama does his best to adjust to whatever the spikers might want from him but doesn't push them, or confront them, doesn't try to challenge them to make them better. It stems from his junior high experience, where confrontations led to him getting ostracized and benched (cause he wasn't good at communicating what he wants). Oikawa pointed it out too, asking whether he'd even considered what Hinata [his spiker] wants, and Kageyama took it to heart, always adjusting to the spikers and doing his best to make them comfortable. And then there's Atsumu, another youth-level setter, telling him that he's being /too/ accommodating - so Kageyama basically doesn't really understand what he's doing wrong, caught between Oikawa's "you might regress to a dictator" [you're too assertive and bossy] and Atsumu's "goody-two-shoes" [you're too accommodating], caught between their takes on different aspects of a setter's job. 2. Kageyama told Hinata "you can jump even higher", not "fly" - he's really not that great with metaphors x) But words "fly" and "jump" do sound the same in Japanese, hence this interpretation.
Aleczandxr actually made a video on Kageyama, it’s really good and basically my reason for saying this is because he says in the comments that Oikawa never said to be completely accommodating, he is actually known for drawing out his players potential, his advice was meant specifically for Hinata’s new quick. It was Kageyama’s misconception of Oikawa’s advice
well its also Oikawas lack of talent which he is reffering to so much. He has the ability to give the spikers the tosses they want but cant drag out the 120% like kageyama or atsumu for example
I think it's really important with Oikawa's advice that a lot of people miss, to note it was a situation specific piece of advice Kageyama took too far. He was talking about the fact that Kageyama didn't even try to give Hinata what he was asking for, which reinforces what Suga has been saying all along about asking people how they want sets and him compensating for their weaknesses. Oikawa said, don't just ignore what your hitter asks for, you've got to at least try, and Kageyama took that as always give them what they want. BUT, it's shown several times in canon, Oikawa isn't a setter who does whatever his hitters want, most obvious in that scene with Kindaichi where he asks Oikawa to adjust a set for him, and Oikawa says ok, but let's keep trying it this way a bit more first because I believe in you and your ability to hit it, which is what Atsumu does too. Kageyama isn't actually caught between two philosophies, he's caught between his perceptions of two setters.
I love how despite being the way he is, Tsukishima can't help having players from other schools warm up to him and start calling him "Tsukki", when no one in Karasuno calls him that except his childhood friend Yamaguchi.
The eyebrows guy (Komori) and Sakusa come from Itachiyama Academy. The actual characters used are different, but the word "Itachi" can be read to mean weasel. It's not as obvious in Sakusa, but Komori definitely has a sort of mustelid look to him hahaha
All I know about Komori is that his eyebrows remind me the eyebrows of upper class women in Japanese period movies. They just snipped them off and then painted those two blotches super high, together with the black teeth, some historical fashion I just cant get over
3:51 Coach, just a reference you might've missed: when the player said Saito-sensei missed practice because he ate bad oysters, it was a reference to last episode when Saito and the other coach were at the restaurant talking about how another coach missed practice because he ate bad oysters, then Saito himself proceeded to eat bad oysters and miss practice lol
17:45 i think this is very important, kageyama noticed that the player who received the ball gets away fast to let the player who is in the back aproach right away (this Little detail is important for on of the next episodes)
Atsumu is the first egotistical character in haikyuu imo. He knows he's good so he expects everyone to be as good as him thus he's always trying to push his teammates to be better which I really like about him!
Which I think is so good because you can get the feeling that Haikyuu might be glossing over these aspects of sportsmanship (which is entirely not the case of course) so seeing Atsumu really adds new dimension.
I can write it now without spoilers. After this episode I start understand and respect Washijo coach so much. he didn't try mock Hinata, he gave what Hinata need the most just by put him at ball boy position. And Hinata used it so well. But Nekomata is the best for me anyway :D
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Season 4 has 25 episodes. Season 5 release date is still not confirmed but most like it will air on 2022 (we don't know the number of episodes either) And there's a huge chance that the rest of the story (which is already finished in the manga) won't be fully adapted in Season 5 so... considering that they take 1-2 years MINIMUM between seasons, Haikyuu won't die any soon on this channel (as long as you want to continue ofc haha). But there will be no Haikyuu content for a while if it doesn't end on Season 5. 2:43 could be a cool reaction series but keep in mind that is not as good as Haikyuu! It could be a good reaction series but only because you have a background in Volleyball. I personally wouldn't bother watching a reaction of this show if it was from another person. Haikyuu is not only a good Volleyball series (and probably the best we will ever get) but a really good show in general, that's why it's so popular. 2:43 isn't, the general opinion is that it was bland as a show, decent at best.
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial If you make videos for 243, I'd watch it, although I've never watched that anime. You'll probably get better insight from the community via a poll
@@svgftw351 well. There's already been discussions on it and they seem to want to make ch5 cover the rest of the story. Which there's just too much content, meaning they'll be cutting out A LOT. I won't speak on what they claim to cut because it'll be a spoiler.
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial nah it's not good. It's just random bad drama, but they play volleyball. I would advise to watch run with the wind instead. It's not about volley it's about running but it trully summaries why we running. running in the case of the anime but it also mean "why we play volleyball" or "why we do videos on UA-cam" and so on. It explains: why it's worth living and how I should take sometime for yourself instead of focusing only on work and stuff like that
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial it's a "trope" in most anime when the main characters aren't really fighting against anyone but instead train for the next opponent or competition. A good example would be when Goku died in DBZ and trained with King Kai until Vegeta arrived on earth.
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial a series of episodes dedicated to training and character growth. No big bad to defeat, no match to win, etc. Just training. They are mostly used to introduce new abilities or character evolution (in this case Hinata developing skills aside from his obsession with spiking), and are a nice change of pace.
@@reginaphalange8636 are you talking about DragonBall Z that aired like 32 years ago? My bad didn't mean to spoil it for you. *spoiler alert* Goku dies, a lot. He comes back though 🤣
I love Kindaichi's conversation with Hinata. This conversation just gets me so hyped about this show. Normaly you'd have Kageyama's previous teammates be rivals to him now and that would be it. No further development needed. But here you have something else. Kindaichi and Kunimi now have shared a whole experience with Hinata, and got to know him. They also share a bond now. Much like it would be in real life, it is not just about a rivalry between two guys, everyone just gets to know each other and have all sorts of relationships. What I mean is, next time Karasuno and Seijoh meet, it will not be just about Kageyama vs Oikawa, or Kageyama vs his previous teammates- Hinata can also get involved in this, and that changes the whole perspective on the personal grudge of the match.
I think Kindaichi keeps bringing up the stuff with Kageyama because he regrets not being able to be a suitable partner for him like Hinata is now. Kageyama's issues have always been with communication, but Kitagawa-Daichi got discourage by himself because of it and he knows they could have learned and worked with him better and been a better friend.
From what I think, Kindaichi actually wanted to be there for Kageyama but got caught up in the flow of the team's rebellion against Kags. He couldn't muster up the courage to stand by him or maybe it all happened before he could realise. And so to say, Kunimi knew about Kindaichi's feelings and stood up for Kindaichi instead(or so to say). I think Kunimi for Kindaichi is what Iwa-chan is to Tooru.
@@vishrutipandey1746 I always had the feeling that despite being very quiet, Kunimi always knows what he wants, and I would not be surprised if he was the one who had the idea of the mutiny. We never saw him regret it, and i know that people who seems the calmest are often the more assertive and harsh with their words. I think that for Kageyama being called king 100 times by Kindaichi and 1 time by Kunimi doesn't have the same impact at all.
@@Nunelii Well of course, Kunimi calling me dumb would be way more depressing than Kindaichi doing so. But I wanted to say it was Kindaichi who was lost and is regretting it now, Kunimi on the other hand only does what he thinks is necessary so no matter the result he would barely mind it, if he ever even would, if that makes sense.
18:36 we can see Komori playing Wing spiker, while he usually is the Libero for Itachiyama. Sakusa is playing Middle blocker when he is the outside hitter, and Miya Atsumu is playing libero while he is a setter. And ofc Kageyama playing spiker
Atsumu is actually a really complex character, once all of the layers are peeled back. I recommend that after you finish all of season 4, you watch the character analysis of Atsumu by Aleczandxr. He does a really good job at going in depth with character’s emotions.
Really love the fact that they're competing at almost everything - from running, picking up balls, jumping, etc. They're pushing each other for the better.
Gotta say, I'm really loving this editor's style! All the transitions, little effects, clarifications and humorous bits throughout the videos really heightens the experience! The thumbnail for this episode looks fire too!! Amazing work, Team Elevate!
Hinata's "I was a ball boy" moment is one of my favorite Hinata moments (of which I have many!). It's that quiet intensity, and the way he's not embarrassed or backing down in the slightest. It's so good! Gives me chills! I choose to interpret Kageyama's reaction as him somehow getting the meaning of what Hinata is expressing... although I might be reading too much into it... But I definitely don't think Kageyama's laughing at Hinata. Even though the two of them are very different in a lot of ways, they do tend to understand each other when it comes to really important things, like volleyball.
Their progress reminds me of Coach Ukai's question to Takeda Sensei in S1 about them, on whether they went to the same middle school or junior high, and was told they were rivals only just recently.
coach, the guy with the funny eyebrows and cat eyes from the national youth camp is Itachiyama's libero and the best libero in Japan. Itachiyama is the number 1 team from tokyo, they beat Bokuto in the Ovas remember? the germophobe (top 3 spiker) is also from that team.
10:30 recall that Hinata and Tsukki both learned the soft block at the same time from Kuroo back at the training camp arc of season 2, I really appreciate both of them putting it to use
I absolutely love how you discussed in length on how good some of the animations were especially the mundane ones which we take for granted or don't normally notice. Hinata walking backward and Tanaka spinning the keys while walking were probably my favorite scenes purely on how difficult it would be to animate so fluidly and naturally.
Genius-furthest away from perfection. What I think he means with this is like what we have seen from Kageyama being strict with himself . He’s made the most talented setter in the show ,but he didn’t get satisfied with what he already achieved because he sees what he lacks and tries to be better. He sees perfection and knows he’s not there …I think it implies he will never reach perfection because he is always “hungry” for more .( that’s why I think episode is called hunger) very unique way to view geniuses, but I think it is fitting for athletes.
I understood it completely differently. Peole who know how to do things naturally are bad a communicating, because they can't explain their techniques and also don't understand others' struggles well. In team sports, geniuses are a pain. That's why most teams try to adjust to the genius. It's way harder for the genius to get to the team. That's basically dictator-Kageyama: a useless team-player; genius but furthest away from perfection. The part you discribe is basically Kageyama's journey to understand the team and use his genius usefully - and you're right insofar that now kageyama strives "hungrily" probably forever. :)
I knew Coach would've a bad impression of Atsumu 😂😂 but he's actually a good setter coach, but he is pretty childish so I can't blame you hahaha As for what Ushiwaka said to Hinata, I think it's safe to spoil it hasn't been animated yet and we're all waiting for it too coach 😂
I kinda saw it coming since coach took a while to warmaup a little to Oikawa and was instantly on board with Ushijima who to many comes across as too dry. Coach just likes more straightforward characters I guess but of course each and every one of the is great and unique on their own right.
actually, at first, I thought he's a douchebag but yeah, there's no douchebag in this anime. these characters were created for further development of these lead characters just like washijo-sensei
coach Donny i cant wait for you to see the next episodes regardless of the animations you are gonna realize how great the author of haikyuu really is with the rest of the season
7:30 Coach Donny: "that's the key strategy... to beach volleyball... you don't want to serve the stronger hitter... because they will hit the 3rd ball most of the time..." Editor #7: (shows a clip of coach donny's beach volleyball game where the opponent does not want to serve to him) me: nice!
If you'll remember from last weeks episode coach, there was a scene where the Shiratorizawa coach was eating with the Jhonzenji coach, and the latter warned the former not to eat the oysters cause their high school coach got sick from eating bad oysters. The Shiratorizawa coach ignored him and now we are seeing the repercussions in this weeks episode.
I really didn't expect to enjoy the amount of time you put into explaining the animation as much as i did this episode, these reactions are some of the only videos I can watch fully without getting bored and skipping through it. Thanks for another great video
28:06 From what I understand when Hinata said that fighting is normal, Kindaichi's face with that emotion was shown and I read that emotion as his realization that they never really had a fight that would prolly help them before since Kageyama wasn't actually selfish, he just never realized his mistake because no one talked to him about him, no one fought him with it and so it went on until they graduated. Their teammates never actually fought with Kageyama about his mistake, instead, they kinda talked back about it and just complain with each other of how arrogant and selfish Kageyama was. I don't exactly blame Kindaichi and the others, he was affected by it as well, losing his confidence because he doubted himself after the experience with Kageyama. Well, at least, from what I understand Kindaichi's emotion at the time and Hinata's words about the fact that it's normal to fight when both side doesn't want to back down, it's a little detail that shows how fighting could've changed Kageyama in middle school since again, he wasn't exactly selfish, he was just doing his job thinking that everyone could follow through it because nobody made him realize that he needed to change cuz other's can't hit his tosses. I mean, it's not certain that if Kindaichi and the others fought with Kageyama back in middle school about their issue about them, it's going to change the situation, they might even fight hard to the point that it goes out of hand but then again, it will make Kageyama realize their point. As from what was shown, Hinata and Kageyama fought a lot and that's how they became better. That's how they made each other improve.
Coach, I gotta say, your background with animation and the way you go into such detail about what goes into certain scenes has made some of these scenes much more memorable for me. That scene where the Shiratorizawa coach is talking about Hinata and he puts the water down? I haven't thought about that scene since I saw it the first time. After hearing you talk about how much detail they put into that short of an animation it really paints things in a different light. Thanks for giving us such great insights from both a volleyball and an animation perspective. I watch several channels react to this show and it's so interesting seeing how different people bring such different insights to the same show.
I think on the down low coach Washijo understands Hinata and has hopes for him and he actually knew that learning to read, watch, and understand the game is what he needs but rather than just tell him that, I think he also wanted to test his resolve in a sense by making it tough on him. They kind of hinted at it because they said if he really wanted to Washijo could’ve just kicked Hinata out. So he actually knows what he’s doing when he put Hinata as ball boy.
So, I think the issue with last episode's animation on the short kid's spike isn't even in the style or the execution, but the direction. Switching to a very exaggerated style like that works best when the scene has a lot of speed and movement, essentially using that exaggeration as smear frames. But in Episode 4, they slowed the scene down to show his running approach while STILL having him in that different artstyle. It didn't look bad, but it made it stand out more than it was meant to and made the scene feel incongruent with the rest of the show.
What Miya is telling Kageyama by calling him a "Goody two shoes" is that he gives his hitters sets that they can hit the best instead of giving the best set to beat the block. Kageyama is being a goody two shoes because he doesn't want another team to give up on him, hence the flashbacks.
So happy that coach gives this opening song the love it deserves! It's probably my favourite from this series, highly recommend listening to the whole song! (Phoenix by Burnout Syndromes)
Pausing and looking at in-between frames trying to discern patterns in the art style can be tricky, since inbetween frames are the lowest priority in the pipeline and made by the least skilled animators, and sometimes they just need to pages out and cant worry too much about how this frame fits into the general artstyle or if it's anatomically correct And comparing them to important keyframes where there is a lot of detail is going to lead you even more astray if you try to compare
I love all of your animation insights. I now appreciate the difficulty in animation and now I understand why I sometimes like or don’t like animation in shows.
I never really tried to think about it prior, but when the coach says geniuses are the furthest away from perfect (in context, the best version of themselves) they are the individuals with the highest potential so their end point is much further beyond that of other players.
Sakusa, the germaphobe, is the main hitter at Itachiyama (in the Tokyo prefecture). Back in season 2, at the barbecue, Kuuro talks to Bokuto, Leiv, and Hinata about the top 3 spikers in the country. Sakusa is the the top 3 with Ushijima and a hitter called Wakatsu Kiryu from Mujinazaka High in the Oita Prefecture. Sakusa's team Itachiyama beat Bokuto and Fukurodani in the Tokyo Spring Qualifier Finals (The tournament that decides who goes to Nationals in Tokyo). This was mentioned in one of the OVA "Nekoma vs. Nohebi".
Danichi and company are graduated after the spring tournament. Kageyama was spiking as far as I saw, just the last day out of five. Great to see so much analysis on the animations! I learned so many things I did not really notice!
All those training camps was about they learning more about what they were "bad" at. Kageyama learned how to spike better, Hinata learned how to receive better and Tsukishima learned how to set better.
coach, the goody two shoes bit will be showcased very well in the future, you will perfectly understand later what he meant. Also the coach who got sick from the oysters was seen in the last episode eating them and talking bout knowing someone who got sick from oysters.
20:42 The cat eye guy is Komori, and he is considered the #1 High School Libero and plays with Sakusa (The germaphobe) on the Itachiyama Institute team
To add a little more context to anime making, animators are paid based on the number of cuts/frame they draw. A certain amount of budget in terms of money is given from the production side who of course manages the financial part, with providing money, calculating expected revenues, marketing, etc. The director then knows how much money they can put into a single episode and has to come up with how many frames he wants for each scene. Animators are asked to animate certain scenes within a fixed amount of frames. That's why some scenes end up more fluid than other. Since anime are seasonal, they have to release an episode each week, also to keep the interest up. In japan most anime are watched on television so they have to be mindful of schedule and such. That's why some scenes can end up rushed, if the guys doing schedule did a poor job, or if the team is unexperienced some animators can end up having to remake some animation because the quality wasn't up to the directors' standard. Every episode has of course a different episode director, so the animations and directing could end up different between each episode. Sometimes to make up for lack of personnel or time they even end up outsourcing entire episodes to different animation studios, mostly smaller/lower quality ones since bigger/higher quality studios have their hands full with their own animes. Some animation studios even make use of freelance animators, so it can become really difficult to control the quality of the animation when you're walking a tight rope schedule wise. Considering the second part of this season was being made during the pandemic it makes sense a lot of scenes can be rushed and lower quality because it was a race against time to even work on the episode, let alone release it.
This stuff is so important for Coach to know if he's going to keep talking the animation. Every time he talks about the animators doing things in a different style or cutting frames, that's like blaming the cameramen for how a movie looks. Technical stuff if one thing, but if he's going to keep talking the animators style choice and the directing choices made (or that one time he said the animators working obscene hours for pathetic wages were lazy), I really wish he'd do a bit of research into the actual industry and how it works rather than just "this animator isn't as good or that last one".
The jokes are going over his head 😂 When Kageyama said which way is the station or when Hinata said I'm starving. I think that's because he's explaining without pausing.
Based on knowledge of future episodes, I think Miya was being sincere when calling kageyama a goody two shoes. It sets up a nice mental breakthrough for kageyama later this season.
Miya, the other setter, is from Osaka, which is well-known that people from this region speak their mind. This is one FYI to the character personality .
This conversation between Hinata and Kageyama reminds me of the conversation after their first game in S1 when he said only those who are strong would stays on the court longer. How it really changed in a year and both of them are no longer just rivals but rivals and partners. Both of them drives each other to get better at what they are doing and it is interesting how Kageyama would later advices Hinata on how to jump higher based on what he saw in the training centre. I think what the smile Kagayama has when Hinata told him that he was a ball boy (in some video it was translated as receiving) meant was he knew Hinata would not stay idle in those five days but probably learned something new, as he usually does in the past.
in haikyuu the eys represent an animal which represents their personality, Kageyama has some very cold eyes same a Tsuki while Hinata has very hyperactive and constantly hungry eyes. The players in Neko have cat eyes BCS of the playful curious and outright ingenious attitude they have as a team. it's a nice visual queue
I’ve seen this episode 3 times and I just noticed that the lil scene with Hinata and kageyama getting to the gym early, without a key and having tanaka show up to save the day is a call back to the second episode of the series 😭😭😭
23:55 Atsumu's line here really got kageyama thinking... A hitter should follow up the setter(just like Kageyama in middle school mindset about setter).... Meanwhile Oikawa, he make sure that the hitter gets the set easily but in high quality (Sorry for my english)
I think the thing that's throwing people off is when you mention animator by episode and not shot because animators work by shots and not by episodes. And every single cut is probably a different animator.
I think shark teeth have to do with how shapes communicate emotions. I read somewhere that triangles communicates agression, circles communicate softness and square things communicate stability, and that makes sense to me. Idk why.
Hey Coach! Nice reaction as always! I'm seeing that you are getting closer to 500K subscribers! I'm so happy for you! I watched you since 2019, when you were about 200K. Your way to explain things and share your thoughts is what kept me here! And I'm so glad a lot of people is getting to see you now with the Haikyuu reactions. Hope you the best!
I just realised, that moment with the Shiratorizawa training camp coaches talking after its over. Old mate was praising the use of 2v2s. The glasses coach's team (wild team) mainly practiced 2v2. That was said in their match.
Hey coach, Atsumu is not insecure at all, more like very arrogant (not in a bad way), he just hates playing with or against players who suck, it’s not worth his time, kageyama didn’t seem to enjoy setting as much as spiking (according to Atsumu) so he was put off by it. Remember Atsumu is the no.1 high school setter, better than Kageyama at this point.
Yeah Miya is a really aggressive guy, he's like a mix of Ushijima and Oikawa, but with a little ego. Hopefully we'll understand more of why he is that way.
God i can't wait til you get further in the season and get to see Atsumu's volleyball philosophy explained a bit. Unfortunately it'll be til later seasons that it get's fully elaborated on, but he has a mentality around volleyball i've always resonated with. He comes across as snarky and back handed at times but it's never that complicated; he's an absolutely amazing setter, and he knows it, so he feels confident asking for more from his hitters. He's the perfect example of being able take what he dishes out; if he plays badly he wants to be told and treat as such, hence why he feels so comfortable critiquing and commenting on other players, knowing that he's already doing his absolute best to ensure he keeps to that same standard.
I'm sure people have said it already but I really appreciate how you respond to comments at the beginning of every video. I think it's such a great way to make us feel like we are together in this haikyuu journey!!
As for the beginning of the opening, it's not only great visually, first line gives me goosebumps almost every time I hear it. It says "I clench my fists so hard that it leaves fingernail marks on my hands" and I think it conveys the frustration of that moment very well
Just a note for you coach, I've noticed how everytime you talk about the animation you mention an "Animator", and you wish the good one to keep working on the show, but that's not how the production of Anime works, they require a whole team from 8 to 15 animators to work on an episode, so the difference in quality is not because one animator is better than the other. But because of time and budget and some other factors
Loved the additional details about the animations. As someone that doesn't know much about animation, it is always fun to learn more about it from Coach's perspective!
I love the commentary on the animation coach. When we get to "stickman quality" will actually be able to learn something, instead of simply complaining about. You just keep raising the bar of what an anime reaction can be. ❤️
yeah. when he talked about how the shiratorizawa members were drawn and such, it really made me astounded on how much detail is taken into animation i really have respected animes and animation more from coach donny
By the time we get to know what Ushijima told Hinata what he’s thinking when he’ receiving, it would be a long long time later and also a very meaningful moment
Coach is so happy with this episode he is getting off his chest all the animation details the other episodes missed xD the episode and reaction were so refreshing
Don't forget that it isn't the animators making these stylistic decisions, its the mangaka (the illustrator of the manga), and the animators are translating that into a TV show.
I am really enjoying not just all the volleyball insights, but all the reactions on the animations also. Can't forget all the inspiring messages coach give us that apply not just on volleyball but on life as well! We appreciate it coach 💚
Yeah, me too, still there is some random guy in the comments spamming and telling coach to stop talking and shitting about the animation, even though he praised it so much this time lol.
Miya (second setter) goody 2 shoe comment to Kageyama was a reference to his character in season 1, where Kageyama was more of a dictator, king, on the court but now he's communicating more
The drawings are detailed because they're still shots. Once they need to move and have money shots. You're gonna see more animations like last episode in special moments from different animators. The character in the last episode especially.
idk why but i always satisfies me having lunch while watching coach donny's haikyuu reaction vids. i also sometimes force myself to wait for lunch before watching. really enjoy the food and anime with a hint of coach's educational point of view
The block that Tsuki did to Hyakuzawa is also what we call as the "Plate". That's what Hinata did when he tried to "block" Ushijima. The germophobe guy is Sakusa. 1 of the top 3 middle school spikers together with Ushijima. He was intorduce in the barbecue scene of season 2 by Kuroo.
No need to apologize about animation analysis, coach! A reason I stuck with you vs other “pro/olympic players watches Haikyuu!” vids is because you also had an artistic perspective, too. I play soccer but professional work is in art/design, so it’s nice to see another artist-athlete 😆
Coach.. That insight about Washijou sensei at the end was spot on... eventhough he admires Hinata for never giving up unlike him, he always pushes hinata down whenever he gets a chance, is because he wants to see hinata get back up and prove him wrong again and again.. Maybe he just wants to see someone from the same category as him (not tall enough) to keep performing and never give up, unlike him..
No one really pointed out but, if you remember the flashbacks from Season 3, when Karasuno was bad, Daichi was also being a ball boy in the Karasuno practices, which is probably why he's such a good passer now
Up for this!

I love that detail, too!

Yeah, and that's why Hinata saying that the way he felt about Kageyama is normal was such a relief for him. That scene was so good.
Exactly, that's also the way Kageyama felt seeing Kunimi work well with Oikawa.
Oh, I've never seen it like that, he's probably thinking "What if the problem was me?". That's a really tough question...
Yeah it’s why that shot of Kindaichi when he hears that Kageyama is adapting to Hinata back in season 1 is so heartbreaking to see.
That's why he smiles, he understands that he grew in some way while being a ball boy.
yeah, right on the first episode, Kageyama was so pissed off that Hinata could be so much better but instead "wasted" his three years in juniour high.
huh? wasnt it because the ball was insanely easy to hit and he was thrilled because he was playing with all these good players?
@@stylebydefault8315 I'm pretty sure you're not even talking about the same thing as everybody else. You high?

Well put! I think coach sometimes forgets Kunimi was also Kageyama's old teammate lol
@@아뤼-g3c pfft even I forget and I've seen this anime twice, so I don't blame Coach Donny
You just end up liking him as you learn more about him
the goody two shoes comment is related to it oo, kageama changed his "king" style into giving everyone easy passes, while atsumu always works his hardest to bring his best game, like his comment about good setters making hitters better. it kinda makes kageyama look like a lazy talented setter compared to him since all he realy does is making constant easy tosses
i know i might have not explained the best, so excuse me, hope you get my point
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial I just wanna say the edits are really good, you have a good eye for people coach
well its also Oikawas lack of talent which he is reffering to so much. He has the ability to give the spikers the tosses they want but cant drag out the 120% like kageyama or atsumu for example
All this was gonna be explained in future episodes…
Doesn't Nishinoya call him Tsukki?
@@bbittercoffee I don't know about Noya but I'm pretty sure that Hinata calls him Tsukki sometimes

The eyebrows guy (Komori) and Sakusa come from Itachiyama Academy. The actual characters used are different, but the word "Itachi" can be read to mean weasel. It's not as obvious in Sakusa, but Komori definitely has a sort of mustelid look to him hahaha

Atsumu is the first egotistical character in haikyuu imo. He knows he's good so he expects everyone to be as good as him thus he's always trying to push his teammates to be better which I really like about him!
Ip
He a volleyball nerd
Which I think is so good because you can get the feeling that Haikyuu might be glossing over these aspects of sportsmanship (which is entirely not the case of course) so seeing Atsumu really adds new dimension.
I can write it now without spoilers. After this episode I start understand and respect Washijo coach so much. he didn't try mock Hinata, he gave what Hinata need the most just by put him at ball boy position. And Hinata used it so well. But Nekomata is the best for me anyway :D

coach nekomata is just a different kind of chill

@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Season 4 has 25 episodes. Season 5 release date is still not confirmed but most like it will air on 2022 (we don't know the number of episodes either)
And there's a huge chance that the rest of the story (which is already finished in the manga) won't be fully adapted in Season 5 so... considering that they take 1-2 years MINIMUM between seasons, Haikyuu won't die any soon on this channel (as long as you want to continue ofc haha).

Yeah I think so too
Up for this!!!
I totally agree!! Loving the new editor's work!
Me: "This has to be one of my favorite scenes."
Coach Donny: "Let's appreciate these drawings." 😂
I love that no one can guess Atsumu's personality right the first time they see him lmao
I still can't understand his actions much after watching whole seasons
Yeah, but I think that's understandable considering how he's first presented and everything.
I have always loved the part where Kageyama says to Hinata, “you can fly even higher” 🥺
coach, the guy with the funny eyebrows and cat eyes from the national youth camp is Itachiyama's libero and the best libero in Japan. Itachiyama is the number 1 team from tokyo, they beat Bokuto in the Ovas remember? the germophobe (top 3 spiker) is also from that team.
actually, the soft block technique was introduced in season 2 - in the match against hyakuzawa! they called it "a plate" if I remember correctly
10:30 recall that Hinata and Tsukki both learned the soft block at the same time from Kuroo back at the training camp arc of season 2, I really appreciate both of them putting it to use
Watching Haikyuu again with coach Donny is a totally new experience, with all detail about the animations that i havent noticed until now
I absolutely love how you discussed in length on how good some of the animations were especially the mundane ones which we take for granted or don't normally notice.
I knew Coach would've a bad impression of Atsumu 😂😂 but he's actually a good setter coach, but he is pretty childish so I can't blame you hahaha
As for what Ushiwaka said to Hinata, I think it's safe to spoil it hasn't been animated yet and we're all waiting for it too coach 😂
I kinda saw it coming since coach took a while to warmaup a little to Oikawa and was instantly on board with Ushijima who to many comes across as too dry. Coach just likes more straightforward characters I guess but of course each and every one of the is great and unique on their own right.

"he's got the same personality as hinata, just meaner" im cryiiiiing i never thought of it that way loool
This needs to go waay upp

"The short kid" The absolute disrespect towards Hoshiumi 😔
The guy that ate with Kageyama and talked with him after camp ended is a first year from one of the schools from the Tokyo training camp teams
What Miya is telling Kageyama by calling him a "Goody two shoes" is that he gives his hitters sets that they can hit the best instead of giving the best set to beat the block. Kageyama is being a goody two shoes because he doesn't want another team to give up on him, hence the flashbacks.

Same here. It's not as upbeat as the other Haikyuu OPs but still, my fave song. Very inspirational and quite relaxing to hear, in my opinion.
my fav WAS hikari are season3 op, then phoenix blew my mind and then Orange light was just as dope
love all these 3 openings
Pausing and looking at in-between frames trying to discern patterns in the art style can be tricky, since inbetween frames are the lowest priority in the pipeline and made by the least skilled animators, and sometimes they just need to pages out and cant worry too much about how this frame fits into the general artstyle or if it's anatomically correct
And comparing them to important keyframes where there is a lot of detail is going to lead you even more astray if you try to compare
Instantly clicked as soon as I saw, I’m so excited
coach, the goody two shoes bit will be showcased very well in the future, you will perfectly understand later what he meant.
16:59 Unfortunately, you won't know what Ushijima told Hinata for a very long time, haha.
The jokes are going over his head 😂
When Kageyama said which way is the station or when Hinata said I'm starving.
Editor-san really did great job 😁
cool effects and transitions, especially the elevate-yourself into haikyuu at the beginning
hahhaa i really like the sudden pauses and coach explaining some art illustrations lol. i like your video editor too, he's funny and good
in haikyuu the eys represent an animal which represents their personality, Kageyama has some very cold eyes same a Tsuki while Hinata has very hyperactive and constantly hungry eyes.
Meanwhile Oikawa, he make sure that the hitter gets the set easily but in high quality
(Sorry for my english)
I think the thing that's throwing people off is when you mention animator by episode and not shot because animators work by shots and not by episodes. And every single cut is probably a different animator.
I think shark teeth have to do with how shapes communicate emotions. I read somewhere that triangles communicates agression, circles communicate softness and square things communicate stability, and that makes sense to me. Idk why.
Funnily enough, structurally, triangles are considered the most stable
Coach calling atsumu a douchebag clears my skin and raises my grades. I needed that.
Hopefully we'll understand more of why he is that way.
i love when theres not much volleyball match in the episode, this straight up turns into an animation review. keep up the great content coach!
yeah. when he talked about how the shiratorizawa members were drawn and such, it really made me astounded on how much detail is taken into animation
i really have respected animes and animation more from coach donny
I feel you Coach. Hinata becoming a senior on the team and lead his juniors is what we all wanted to see and couldn't!!
By the time we get to know what Ushijima told Hinata what he’s thinking when he’ receiving, it would be a long long time later and also a very meaningful moment
Coach is so happy with this episode he is getting off his chest all the animation details the other episodes missed xD the episode and reaction were so refreshing
I really like the thumbnail, the editor is doing great.
The character in the last episode especially.
idk why but i always satisfies me having lunch while watching coach donny's haikyuu reaction vids. i also sometimes force myself to wait for lunch before watching. really enjoy the food and anime with a hint of coach's educational point of view
hearing coach talk about beach volleyball just makes me so excited especially for the future hehe
The block that Tsuki did to Hyakuzawa is also what we call as the "Plate". That's what Hinata did when he tried to "block" Ushijima.
The germophobe guy is Sakusa. 1 of the top 3 middle school spikers together with Ushijima. He was intorduce in the barbecue scene of season 2 by Kuroo.
whenever the sakuga for hoshiumi goes crazy i love it, coach is the first person ive seen who hasnt, thats interesting
No need to apologize about animation analysis, coach! A reason I stuck with you vs other “pro/olympic players watches Haikyuu!” vids is because you also had an artistic perspective, too. I play soccer but professional work is in art/design, so it’s nice to see another artist-athlete 😆
15:40 No, the third years are still in school. It is now December and they won't graduate until mid March.
