The coach immediately going "omg Kageyama said 'nice receive' to Hinata, we gotta hear that again!1" had me in stitches :"D One of us!!!
I also really loved how they had this seemingly anticlimactic development of Karasuno losing such an important point over a lucky net-in from Inarizaki, but then turned it around in the best way possible with Hinata cheering everyone up, especially with Suga thinking all the way back to the first time he witnessed Hinata nailing his first important dig - the one that finally made Kageyama toss to him.

Your interpretation of Inarizaki's banner is absolutely right, coach. But another one that I get is that is very common in Japan for students to join a club during highschool just because it's part of their culture and student life, so when they grow up they have the memories of when they were young. So the banner "we don't need the memories" means that they are not playing volleyball for the memories when they grow old, but because they love it and wanna be the best.

You are absolutely correct about this. All japan students have memories of high school club activities and what they are saying is that they don’t wanna end that there. It’s a shame that the japanese word for memories doesnt really have the same exact meaning as the memories by English. It’s hard to explain when it comes to words that only exists in Japanese… hope Coach Donny understands 🥲

Just a heads up, the coach shown in the faculty room is actually Anabara, the coach for Johzenji (the wild, unpredictable yellow team from season 2). He was one of the coaches that helped organize the first year training camp for Miyagi Prefecture, so that’s why he is so shocked at Hinata’s receive after watching him as a ball boy.
Also you are correct, the reason for the reaction to the twin quick this time was that they did the ‘reverse’ version, where instead of Atsumu quick setting and Osamu hitting, they switched and Osamu quick set and Atsumu hit.
Also, that was Tanaka who said he was gonna swallow his pride and ask Kageyama to do something (which they’ll address next episode :D)

The play where Osamu fakes into a set, the reaction shot we get from Atsumu(where he laughs) is the reason he is one of my favourite characters. It's rare in this show that we get to see the characters have that much fun in a game. They're always so concentrated on getting better or winning that they miss moments like that where something cool happens and you can't help but laugh at it. Not to say they aren't having fun in their own way. I know they are but I enjoy that Atsumu is so good that he can just enjoy the game as a game in those moments.

Our lil' ball of sunshine: "OKAY BUT... DID YOU GUYS SEE MY SUPER-DUPER-AWESOME RECEIVE????!!!!"
Seriously though, I remember literally getting misty-eyed with this moment, even before the Olympic coach had that internal monologue, because I instantly realized that this was the result of all the hard work, and even embarrassment, that Hinata had to go through in the beginning of season 4. Funny how I was so upset when Shoyo didn't get chosen for the training camp, and I felt so sorry for him, but it turns out that being a ball boy was one of the best things that ever happened to him. This proves that you can take a situation that might seem adverse at first, and you can turn it in your favor through pure hard work and determination. I'm so proud of our little libero!

Noya encouraged him every time and complimented his positioning when he got too close to the ball and when everyone else was laughing at him. I love Kenma's reaction because he's just so fond of Hinata. Kenma sees Hinata as someone who is an infinite source of possibilities. Honestly, that's kind of just Hinata's entire philosophy for playing volleyball, summed up by Osamu. He's always chasing that next meal, i.e. continuing to play volleyball for as long as he possibly can. Improving as a player feels sort of somehow secondary in his mind, as he hears from Kageyama early on (to paraphrase) "The stronger you are; the longer you get to play". Alot of the players in the show, especially competitive ones focus on getting better because that's the most natural to them, but Hinata's actions always seem to be in service to his first desire which is to just play more volleyball because he loves it so much.

This is basically is more nuanced version of Bokutos quote of getting that moment where you sink further in love with volleyball. Hinata has been deprived of the feeling of getting a good dig in, so when he finally is able to get it, it only makes him more hungry to experience that feeling again. I can relate to this quote so much its ridiculous. I play football (soccer) and it would be like the feeling of scoring a really nice goal or freekick. You can never get enough of it.

"We don't need the memories" also has a more pragmatic meaning, especially for athletes. Right before the twins' reverse minus quick, there was a line that said (not verbatim) that they had many yesterdays that have been converted into muscle. For sports people, hours and hours of practice over days, weeks, years solidify into intuition, which is a critical tool for athletes. There is no one practice or any one day where a skill suddenly manifests perfectly. Even the freak quick from season one didn't come together consistently in a day. Neither did Karasuno's synchro attack, Nishinoya's overhands and his setting, Tanaks's sharp angle shots, Asahi's serves, even Daichi's steady receiving. By the end of this episode, the Inarizaki motto really enhances Hinata's moment - who needs memories when the numerous practices and long days of hard work have all been ingrained into your physical muscles, into your brain and your mind? It culminates in a moment where all that work pays off to achieve that one thing you've been going towards.
Thank you for the great video, Coach!

I love how your first reaction after seeing Hinata was that he was going to get hit in the face.
Drawing back to previous episodes, I think that this is a much better example of exaggerated proportions (compared to Korai Hoshiumi, the other little giant) because it really drives home the fact that Hinata had full intention behind the receive, which is also shown by Noya's proud mother look compared to everybody else's pure shock.
I also love how you got absolutely wrapped up in that rally.
There are two national tournaments each academic year, the team that won nationals, in the interhigh (the nationals tournament that happened after Karasuno lost to Seijoh in the qualifiers - season 1) was Itachiyama, the team with the germaphobe (one of the top 3 aces in Japan) and the cockroach eyebrowed libero (the best libero in Japan) from the nationals training camp - I don't know if you remember but during the second set of this match the audience was talking about how Inarizaki had a six point lead in their last set and they still lost to Itachiyama (3:1), which I personally think then inspired the coach to start putting Kita in since he prolongs the flow that the ace creates; in other words this version of inarizaki is stronger than the version of Inarizaki that had a six point lead on the best team in Japan. This is also why they are said to be the favourites to win this tournament. I think it's amazing how stacked these teams are like with Inarizaki having the best setter who basically has a neural link with his twin brother (one of the most well rounded players in the show - who can also set a minus tempo, although it is not as accurate as Atsumu, they can use minus tempo for every single rally since there will always be at least one person who can set it), a middle blocker that can manipulate other middles and score points as if the block wasn't even there - he was also giving Tanaka a really hard time during the first set so he's a really good blocker too, a middle who is so experienced that he can compare other players to some of the best in the country (implying that he's played against said players) while shutting them down, a top five ace who coach Ukai said can compete with Ushiwaka on a good day, etc. and they're going blow for blow against a team who no one has heard of. This really goes to show just how good Karasuno really has become, they are literally a worthy challenge for the ultimate challengers!
There are plenty of other stacked teams in this show and I can't wait to see them too :D
    Great reaction.

A detail i missed the first couple of times i watched this episode was the juxtaposition of the lucky breaks karasuno had been getting and hinata’s recieve.
The lucky breaks were, well, strokes of luck. The anime did a good job bombarding it in our face. They kept mentioning how lucky karasuno was for hanging on in this game. Meanwhile, hinata’s receive was deliberate, planned. A feat we dont usually see from him, but it’s the opposite of luck. The slow progression of his character from the beginning of the season finally adds up. Wow, it’s amazing

I actually just had my piton moment the other day. I tore my ACL 2 years ago. After the surgery and during recovery I thought it was over for my athletic ambitions.
During the height of the Pandemic, I got really into Kettlebell Training & Running. So much that my girlfriend actually bought me a Kettlebell Cert Test for my birthday. I trained as hard as I could for it, and became a coach.
Almost a year after getting that cert, and around 7 months back in a gym, I went for a true 1 rep max on my deadlift the other day. Right before I pulled the bar I reflected back on all of the memories that brought me to that moment. How bad my knee hurt during rehab. Relearning how to walk. Rebuilding my squat. I remembered my girlfriend and how she supported me, and after a bit of a yell and a grind, I stood up with 605 pounds in my hands.
I get chills when I think about it. Thanks for sharing your experience with Tall Ones coach. As a recently hired coach myself, it really struck a chord with me.

Then remember that one time when Washijo Sensei said that they (short people) may not have superior physical height but they were given this insatiable hunger instead (Maybe to achieve more or to be better in spite of being short). Then there was Hinata going home from the Shiratorizawa training camp, riding a bicycle and yelling "I'm hungry!". It's hard to keep all of the metaphor and symbolism together when so much of the reader's attention should be directed to the sport, but there's a strong emphasis on food being absolutely critical in an athlete's journey throughout Haikyuu. This match with Inarizaki is the culmination of the arc set in motion when Karasuno lost to Aoba Johsai in season 2 where coach Ukai reminds the Karasuno team to "eat, and grow stronger".
In much the same way as Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa was a battle of the concept of what defines "strength" in a competition, Karasuno vs Inarizaki is a battle of determining where that strength comes from. You can see Inarizaki's powerful motto in "We Don't Need the Memories", but it's tremendously important to remember that there's so much to learn from your past failures as well. The food we eat becomes the energy and the muscle to take on the next challenge, the memories of past games become the reaction speed to use those resources to face the next challenge.
And then to come full circle to Hinata, the food metaphor is completed with the realization that the greatest and most important "hunger" is the love of the sport itself. That unambiguous pure drive and passion for the game is what makes Hinata stand out, and what makes Atsumu different from his twin brother Osamu.

The Inarizaki banner really is my favorite because it has so many layers to what it means as the series gets deeper. At the start, it was meant to make the team seem cocky and overconfident, that they were playing for accolades, rather than the memories to look fondly back on, referencing how many lower level Japanese school teams participate in sports to create "childhood memories". Then it turns into a motto about playing and challenging themselves in the present to get better, referring to how Inarizaki is a team that hasn't finished growing either.

Rewatching this scene now, it was even more special, mainly because, recently, I've also had a "foothold" in volleyball, I was able to simple block a taller and older player on one of my first succesabel attempts to block. A week ago of this, I had hurted my finger trying to block him, but them, even scaried and inexperienced, I stopped him, I couldn't believe that, but it was my hard work that bringed me there. This moment was, and still is, very precious for me. That's why this show is so special and inspire so many people, I have to thank Furudate (manga's author) for creating Haikyuu. I interpreted Inarizaki's banner as "we don't need the memories because we're still here, winning." A trope sometimes in highschool anime happens where side characters that don't have a lot of ambition or drive say "let's just make some good memories" when faced with a daunting challenge. That typically drives the main characters to not give up and give it their all. That's why Inarizaki's banner is basically calling out those who don't have ambition and announcing that they're good enough to stay on the court. They don't need "memories" of the court because they're still on the court.

Nothing makes me happier than getting a dig that leaves even me shocked- because my body reacted, even if my mind didn't process it until the ball was already going to position 3 **clenches fist** the feeling is indescribable.
Because of this, Osamu's "If you have a bite when your starving, you just get hungrier" has never felt so spot on. It's the perfect way to put it. That's exactly the message your mind throws at you afterwards: "I have to make this happen again, and again, and again, and again".

In order to have luck you have to try to have luck. If you don't go for it you're never going to be lucky.

"If we keep holding onto yesterday, what are we going to be tomorrow?" makes me think of the quote "never sacrifice what you could be for what you are"! No matter how great we were there are always new heights to push ourselves to!
Season 4 was a bit of a hit-and-miss for me but this episode was one of my all time favorites from Haikyuu! When this originally came out was when I was going through a rough patch in my job, after years of hard work put in I still wasn't getting the results I wanted so Hinata's moment hit very close to home emotionaly. I kept going and things have been amazing for the past 10 months. Just gotta keep improving one bit at a time!
Been looking forward to this reaction for a while coach, love the series! Cheers from Brazil!

A quick note: Kageyama and Atsumu are not nessicarily on the youth national team yet. That camp was meant to scout players FOR that team, but there was no confirmation that they made the team at any point.

i dont think its a case of Hinata making the team hungrier for victory, you can tell by what they were saying at the start of the time out that they all want to win. but Hinata's positive reaction i think reminded them part of why they play/want to win, that good laugh reset everyone and now they can push with a clear head again

I love the subverting of expectations and shounen trope, that when your main character flexes his hidden super move perfectly for the 1st time, he's gonna insta win and pummel the enemy. Here, the fair flip of luck showed that a skill that Hinata worked so hard for, and a point that Karasuno tried so hard to get doesn't get insta rewarded. Love the storytelling.
    Spoiler:
and just like what coach said, Hinata/Karasuno may not have been insta rewarded in this receive, but the manga showed that Hinata's persistence in learning how to be a great receiver gets rewarded in the next match and in the far, far future.
Thinking how this is the origin story/arc of how Hinata becomes a great receiver gives me chills. Future Hinata digging Kageyama's serves that decimated opponents in the Olympics. Future Hinata digging an improved version of Ushiwaka's serves & spikes.
Baby bird growing up so brilliantly.

I can't believe you're only two episodes away in finishing S4, Coach! It's been a journey rewatching (for me) all of Haikyuu with you. Can't wait to see your reaction to the last 2 episodes :))

one thing i wish they kept in the anime was the original translation for Osamu's food monologue. originally Osamu compared Hinata's love for volleyball to the asian love for rice. Despite how many times you eat hot rice throughout your life you never get sick of it. that analogy, as a korean person was a cultural aspect that resonated with me so well, so I was a bit sad when it was localized to "grub" or "barbaque" in other versions

that made perfect sense, don't hold onto the memories that can keep you from evolving and being better.. hence 'we don't need the memories'

I always wanted to explain the inarizaki banner and was waiting for this episode and i am glad that coach got the meaning spot on " we dont care if we were the called best team in the entire world , we dont care that what we did yesterday worked or not, we are do our very best at that moment and give our all without any excuses and win. we dont need the memories of yesterday, we only care about whats in front us!" THATS WHY THEY ARE CALLED THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGERS.

What I love most about the whole season is Hinata's mood; no nerves, no anger, he's simply so incredibly happy to just play volleyball.

24:40 Never ceases to give me goosebumps. I've seen this scene a million times and it gets better every time. It's just such a relatable scene. It's not the crazy flashy hit, but the simple perfect pass. That moment you get a perfect pass resonates with all volleyball players.
