I can't believe none of the comments are about the fact he's getting the arse out on a 90k car on an icy Welsh backroad! He is an awesome driver.

After being tired of takimg my BMW to a mechanic almost every month I bought a GS350. Solid 100k miles not a single issue. Then upgraded to an ISF and now own a RCF. Not a single issue. Run like a sewing machine. No worries no weird sounds no rattles.
How’s the rcf compared to the isf?
@@gerardobecerra1242 well sounds much better, transmission is more aggressive, more reliable as they improved on isf powertrain. Better interior. Looks great too. I feel its faster than my isf.
Same, gs350 fsport all wheel drive. Got rid of a 535i. Still own a q7 and goodness its a big baby just like that bmw was. Lexus... it feels bran new... like 4 years old... and it feels untouched... how is that possible?! I think the other brands are just fleecin us folx...
Yeah, I own an RCF. Not M4 or C63 fast, but it's so nice to own. The build quality is just another level.
@s l u always remember things that left a good or bad impression on you in the past. I had the bad one. Not only I lost a ton of money in resale value during my ownership, my BMW was in the shop once a month. Bmws drive nice but build quality is trash. Way to much plastic use. Things get brittle due to heat cycles and it is nothing but issues after that. Good luck with your german cars. I am not going to throw back the hate at you🙏. I do like 5.5 ltr AMGs they are most reliable of the bunch.
" the Lfa is still one of the most desirable cars ive driven" Chris harris "If i had to choose 1 car I would take a dark blue Lfa" Jeremey clarkson. What a car
What's plaguing these new Lexus reviews (GS-F, RC-F, LC500) is the fact that Lexus isn't trying to build rivals. It's a LEXUS FIRST, THEN a sport sedan. Meaning traditional Lexus values trump performance for a better package/experience. It does everything very well but few things exceptionally.
Cole Adcock well said mate 👏💯 a lot of people miss the point with Lexus
great reply. I agree.
This is actually a smart comment. I respect this.
That makes sense. But as an "F-Sport" model, they should really be trying to build a car that can do things exceptionally, mainly because this is their performance line (not an average Lexus).
ssjMaximum22Goku
Actually the f sport line isnt the high performance line... the F line is.
LFA, GSF, RCF (ok RCF is not great) the LC500 and the ISF
Do not mistake f sport for the F performance line
F sport just has the sport trim and some improved suspension and optional rear steering
Example :The GS is a performance sedan while the GSF is high performance
Oh lexus did make an exceptional supercar... THE LFA

You can’t beat the GS F’s V8 engine. It’s awesome and it’s honest.
Lexus was the first luxury car I ever owned, I bought a 2011 ES 350 in 2015 with 29,000 miles. I only took it in for regular maintenance. I traded in for a 2015 GS 350 F-Sport with 48,000 miles last December. Granted I don't drive this car that often (I drive a VW Passat as my everyday car) but man when I do drive it, I fall in love with Lexus all over again!
The BMW gonna last 5 years while the Lexus gonna last 15 years lmao
I dont even think the bmw will last 5 years LOL
Want the BMW to last longer? Change out the motor oil at correct intervals. Extended life motor oil lasts 10k miles. Lexus recommends changing every 10k miles. BMW recommends every 15k miles. Wonder why BMW's break more often? You're driving unprotected.
@@DrTommyDDS even then a BMW will never last as long
@@rorodollars I have a 2013 and 2018. Both are going strong. Oil changes at 7.5k
@@DrTommyDDS well of course you do you wouldnt be taking up for them otherwise lol, but really BMWs are known to break down.
I think this review outlines something that people who aren't real car people fail to grasp. It's not JUST about the numbers. Sometimes a car that is easy to drive is more FUN than a car that is hard to drive. There is nothing fun about driving a car that is constantly trying to kill you.
You are 100% correct. But sometimes cars that are hairy are fun too
@Michael Shabo
Yeah. "Hairy" cars are "fun", when you already have other safer cars to drive and work your way up to. However, if it's your only sports car, sports sedan; maybe not so much!? Lol
Yes, there is.
It's one of the many things that made me pick the M5 over the GS.
Another big factor, for someone that hates flappy paddles (and the M's are way better, both in looks and feel, than the GS'), it's that the shifter is right: pull to upshift, push to downshift.
Tandem Automotive it’s about balance
@@Shabnation I think Mercedes are the kings of creating cars that are " constantly trying to kill you".
Chris Harris recognising the virtues of the Lexus confirms everything about the great man. Quality, durability, character of its own
Now this is the review we all want. Everyone is out here talking crap about the RC-F and GS-F, some even the LC500, but they all don't matter. Chris Harris has the most unbiased reviews, and even when they are biased, he realizes the true potential of cars and starts to love the underdog for its true colors

FACTS
and that ain't cheap!
For the Looks LEXUS from quality my vote is still LEXUS.. 😎😍
There is no doubt that the Germans make spectacular luxury and luxury performance cars. Great technology and performance is guaranteed with German cars, however there is something else that is guaranteed, electronic issues and quality issues coupled with reliability issues. Sure, some people won't care, they lease these cars and give the shitty end of the stick to the next owner.
Lexus on the other hand, well different story. You get reliability, quality build and sportiness. Sure they don't have an output compared to their counterparts, but the benefit of the quality and reliability exceed the cost of power. If you want to push your car on a consistent basis and not sweat over all of the color warning lights that will populate your instrument cluster withing a year or two, buy a Lexus performance vehicle (Or Japanese performance vehicle in general).
are speaking from experience ?
tbh this is only about reliability but if u can afford a brand new lexus u can afford the maintanence for a german luxury car. thats why lexus isnt a big car brand compared to german brands.
the germans blow the Japanese out of the water in terms of sportiness and they don't lack on build quality, however the germans do lack reliability.
@@adelclay5283 any car you drive hard will break, my 2006 BMW 530xi never broke or needed a repair expect a water pump Wich was very cheap and common still driving strong at 160000 miles just depends on how you drive.
Maybe in America. But the rest of the world prefers German luxury cars. In fact I think America is the only country where lexus sells a lot.
I live in South Africa and you hardly see a lexus because nobody wants to buy them. We don't have reliability issues with the German cars. To us lexus is just a camry with a different badge.

@@JTM610 styling is subjective but the Lexus is a tad masonry.
The Lexus is a real-world car. Every Lexus is built exactly like that, for the real world, yet done in a way that looks, feels, sounds and goes well. My 2000 LS430 is well clear of the 2 ton mark yet its a hoot to drive, and even on 20s and lowered suspension, it still drives like a magic carpet. Plus you know you're getting Toyota reliability when you buy a Lexus, and in 10 years, a GSF will still be ticking along quite happily while an F10 M5 will be having hernias left right and centre when a sensor decides to take a dump
The whole purpose of the M5 is to have a real world every day use car that also performs well. I don't see how it's not a very nice sedan besides having that much power.
Not saying the Lexus isn't of course.

@Reflex Photography NZ Haha So true man! I am coming from a 450hp 535xi, and just bought a '16 Lexus GSF. Needless to say, I'm VERY happy with the GSF over the BMW. It is important to note that for 2017 Lexus added adaptive dampers because there were some complaints the ride is too stiff during normal driving. The GS F doesn't really compare with other cars, it is an anomaly.
That's what I said. The market for each of these cars is very different. Let's get real, BMW does not build practical cars for people who live in the real world.

M5 is probably a better daily tho: dont get me wrong the GS F is a great car, and probably more reliable than the bummer, but the interior quality, fuel consumption and ride quality is all better on the m5.
@@aadi8568 That’s a good point. People who buy an M5 don’t care about reliability anyways. I was in the market for a compact luxury daily back then and I chose a BMW 335i over a Lexus, it felt more enthusiastic to drive. Reliability wasn’t that bad either. Jeremy Clarkson also praised GSF over BMW M5 and M3. GSF seems to be truly great car, Chris is not only the one who took GSF.
Lexus has the happiest customers around the world because of their build quality an the excellence of their service. If I had the money and should buy a car for every day use it would surely be the lexus. And the looks have actually grown on me a little bit so it doesn't look that bad anymore
Had an 01 IS300 for several years that I loved. It wasn't the fastest car ever, but I have never owned a more reliable vehicle. I never once worried about getting where I was going, and when I sold it on at 180k miles it had zero interior rattles, no loose exterior pieces and the engine and transmission performed like new. The two times it had to go in for a major service (ball joints and timing belt) I actually genuinely enjoyed my time at the dealer. No one does a dealer experience better. Lexus vehicles arent the most exciting on the road, but they are legitimately great to live with. You wouldnt regret saving up to buy one.
Random12231 To be honest lexus has never made the fastest cars when you compare them to rivals. But the quality of their products are amazing and usually their cars are still great to drive. And like you said when you took it for repairs the dealers are actually intrested on servicing you. It's an experience you can't get with any other brand and that's something great.
Random12231 haha my experience exactly. 02 IS300 for six years now. Ball joints and timing belt (which I did myself.)
Tried to do the timing belt myself. Had all the parts, but for the life of me could not break the crank pulley nut loose. Even tried the starter bump trick (big ass cheater bar attached to the crank pulley nut, other end of the cheater on the ground). Worked like a charm on my old Subaru, but on the IS it was actually pushing the car up off the ground with the cheater. That SOB was stuck. Had to admit defeat, put it back together and take it to the dealer. No damn clue how they got that thing loose.
nobody buys lexus in the world except for americans...
Top Gear has actually become a car-show again. I'm digging it.
SwapBlogRU i still miss the old top gear
Why, it's still there, just called 'the Grand Tour'. Same boring overly-scripted stuff. I actually don't like the scripted stuff in Top Gear either, but at least it's not as terrible as it is in The Gran Tour (and indeed the old Top Gear).
SwapBlogRU it is car show.
The fact that they need to put Chris Harris' name onto the title of the video (to get people to watch) shows that this isn't Top Gear, this is Chris Harris on cars.
J C The best bamboozle.
These people always wanting speed speed speed...And when it breaks down, it lives longer in the car repair shop. Lexus is quality, reliability and longevity.
... and bland and boring :(
Everyone makes a choice every now and then.
You and I walk into a bar, you choose a Heineken and I get a Martini. People who buy a BMW, choose it because it's fun to drive. And they have become more reliable now despite being more sophisticated. Both companies have different philosophy. One pushes the boundaries of engineering the other has a more conservative approach.
The modern German cars are notorious for being bland and boring. They may be fast, but they are not fun cars. They have removed everything from the driving experience.

How many M5 owners will take their precious in a racetrack? How many of them can actually drive it at its full potential? The "less is more" approach of Lexus is better suited for enthusiasts who don't have the expertise to chris-harris the shit out of every car on any environment.
carlmanu you've been to race track? I brought mine there, also I see other m5 there. The Lexus really is ugly and slow. I raced one back there, dude scared to shit after a corner trying to catch up. lol
Han Li I've done some track days myself but I don't own either one of these cars and I haven't seen too many BMW nor Lexus being tracked here in the states but perhaps your experience has been different. My point is that Lexus has the more viable approach as a daily driver for the average enthusiast. The M5 is without a doubt the faster car out of the two, if you know what you're doing.
One thing i can say Carmanu is that i don't think Han Li is speaking the truth in regards to owning A 2017 M5. Apparently it is factual that you don't know anything about prudently evaluating an automobile. Here are the key information stated by the Top Gear representative in regards to the Lexus: (1) The driving position is absolutely spot on(6:18 to 6:23). (2) It also has the best seats that i has driven in the last five years (6:24 to 6:35). (3) The normally aspirated engine is excellent (6:40 to 7:16) and (8:53 to 9:13). (4) The suspension in regards to ride and handling is much better than the BMW (8:11 to 8:29). (5) The steering is much better, he also feel much more confident when turning into a corner (8:29 to 8:44) . (7) Visibility is much better (8:45 to 8:52). (8) It drives better than the BMW even when the traction control is off which means the balance of the vehicle is spot on (9:27 to 10:01). (9) Braking is excellent (9:53 to 9:56). Only thing this BMW has against this vehicle is just the power which is a disadvantage to the car itself.
I would argue that most of them probably do use the power for going fast regularly. But you are right, most of them probably don't really drive sporty anywhere outside of motorways.
carlmanu to be honest I've never see Lexus on track too..
I liked the review, and especially the point between "great race track" cars and "everyday performance" cars.
A lot of people look only at race track performance without realizing open roads aren't ideal tracks.

You probably wont read this Chris - I bought a ‘16 GSF and had the exact reaction you did. First impressions, “a bit shit”, but after 4 months of ownership, I adore it. Too right about VTEC boys loving the engine - I have an AP1 S2000 for the weekend and it’s the dream duo as far as I’m concerned!

Tirah5 I appreciate this response, you are probably right. Without Top Gear we might not have seen /Drive and then we might not have the Chris Harris we know today. But I do stand by my point, it's just a shame how childish the internet is.
Old Top gear in my opinion was just entertainment for non car guys. I remember being around guys who really weren't into cars loving top gear and this is what was great about it. But I felt like I was watching car a kids show. People used to ask me how come you don't watch it your a car guy. I can't say much about this guy except from this video and I like his review.

The biggest thing that caught my eye with the gs f is that it has a character, and the biggest detail which is so small which, imo, is the thing i love, is thay it has an analog clock in the middle, what class that car has dead set

I had an F10 M5 for about a year. It is a lovely car and is ridiculously fast. But it was just boring. just a reminder that this m5 is at the end of its run and a new gen m5 is coming late this year or next year :D
Elmojito1000 planting 600hp on rwd cars on roads like these are indeed tricky, you need some very clever engineering to get past that
also, driving on ice, and then complaining about a sports car having too much power seems weird.
valgehiir tbf, in this case its true, the m5 does have too much power, even in perfect conditions
I have never driven a 600 hp car, but I drive a 500 hp, rear wheel car every day, and I could use some more power. But agreed, 4 wheel drive may be needed to put down 600 hp, I have no idea of knowing this for sure tho. M5 and my SL55 cars are built for autobahn, English country roads are best left to MX5 and maybe Morgans, there is nothing to do there with 500 or 600 hp. But in ice and slush? lol. Even in the rain, I don't go faster than 130 kmh on straight road, because the wider the rear tires, the worse the my 500 bhp rear wheel drive gets in slippery conditions. But this road in Harris' video, in snow and ice? What next, take F1 car there, and then complain the car has too much power? Cars have their place, F1 belongs to perfect surface race track because it has 800 hp. The review is so useless. Take the cars to Berlin, and drive to Munchen, and then drive it to Rome, then tell which is better. English LOVE their country roads, I get that, but to bitch that M5 isn't all that great for these roads is idiotic. Again, take these cars to bahn, where they belong!
Ah, so I can get it for cheaper at the BMW dealer then?
Btw, his expectations for the new M5 are in the same line: 9:30

Fantastic review! Love it!
the noise at 3,500 is the additional air intake opening allowing more air into the engine - same as on my ISF
BMW undoubtedly is probably the better drive, by a huge amount I don't think so. Lexus wouldn't feel that much off. However my personal experience with some friends with BMW's and one friend in particular has bought a few BMW's over time diesel and petrol. Both had issues. You could argue lack of maintenance. However, if he took my Lexus is250 and just changed the oil once and didn't bother servicing for a couple of years it will start and act faultless.
If I was rich I'd buy the BMW. If I had my own garage and could service my own cars I'd take a BMW maybe. Lexus cars are fantastic though. The V6 engine, smooth and reliable. If I'm not gonna be rich anytime soon and I want safety I'm sticking with Lexus. I'll try the RX one day
Yup, I've got a 12 year old GS460 - it still looks and feels as good as when it was new - no drop in performance, no oil leaks, no mysterious clouds emerging from the tailpipes - every single thing on it still works, everything looks and feels amazing still. Equivalent BMW would be a 550i - which after 12 years is a ticking time bomb if it hasn't already had serious engine and electrical issues that would write the car off mechanically. BMW don't build anything to last anymore - for Lexus, it's part of the DNA of the brand.
Nice to see Top Gear coming back! With regards to Lexus's gear box. Yes it's weaker but it is more reliable than BMW's and cheaper to maintain.
14:32 I wish the running lights lined up with the head light shape.. they look like an after thought in that spot.
Really really enjoyed this
The Lexus definitely sounds better.
Everywhere I look in the UK are bmws on the Road. I don't see many Lexus on the road. But Lexus are much more reliable I'm a BMW owner and my next car will probably be a Lexus
I live in the UK, I own a jaguar xf 2011 v8 and a BMW 525i 2010 v6, and Nissan 350z 2003 v8 modified. I'm 21 years old and I would much prefer my 3rd car to be a volvo than a lexus if I'm seeking a reliable mid range luxury car
@@undisturbed809 good luck
@@kojoakpabey8825 no luck needed, volvos are replaible too
@beonline1 well, every cars has problems no such thing as a trouble free car but yes British, German, Italian, and Swedish cars are not known for there reliablity but instead. I personal buy luxury car for luxury not reliability which means I'll never concider anything less than a mercedes c class.
@beonline1 I believe the lexus Ls500 is definitely a true luxury car my stands, anything less than the Ls500, Definitely a car Ill like to get my hands on in the future.
Fantastic review!
Brilliant video Chris, just like your own channel vids this is.
Chris is so much more natural in these videos compared to the TV program.
Have a GSF and I absolutely love it!
infinblck my condolences to owning such an ugly, bloated vehicle.
J0J0McM0M0 hahaha typical response of another peasant hating on yt, you win!
Love the way Chris talk about cars! So much better than the other journalist.
A brilliant video. Thanks.
It’s a mad cabin for a completely mad car.
Chris Harris said it best.
Lexus is a more pure car, it's more of a traditional V8 sports sedan. In Australia at least a lot cheaper too it's more the price of a of a 540i M Sport than an M5. The other thing is if you want to pick up a 5-10 year old GS F down the track, it's probably a viable option. A used M5 with it's ultra sophisticated electronics, twin turbo and DCT, means it's probably going to be off limits for most used car buyers who don't want to (or a able to) remortgage their homes for servicing and repairs.
traditional V8 sports sedan? BMW INVENTED SPORT SEDANs and they made 540 manual or 740 manual back in 90s....
@@147NITRO yes they did back in the 90s. This isn't the 90s.
@@shadmansudipto7287 i wanted to say that they perfected making ''traditional V8 sports sedans'' Way before LEXUS, and lexus stole so much from BMW even the design ffs... L shaped tail lights seriously ? and LED light contours on modern cars.... thanks to E39
@@147NITRO yes that is true and Lexus today is what BMW was 15/20 years ago Mercedes to but BMW always been sporty BMW lost his Focus when all the people who made BMW what they were died or retired they're not the ultimate driving machine so much anymore now it's the ultimate video game
That was excellent, thanks.
Chris
we yanks love to hear you talk...also good production!
Lexus all the way Harris Love that car.
Stupid fanboy.
Compulsory Speech STFU
The engine in that Lexus 🤤
Yamaha V8. Need I say more?
Indeed Lexus is the type of cars with reliability and worryfree but BMWs are nice but constant service is a headache
Toyota all the way! ;)
I would take a Toyota over a BMW any day. Toyota have almost no bad cars to their name. BMW have many.
Wonderful build quality. That’s what matters most
Mark Rossi - my 1985 Toyota Supra still drove like dreams after 275k miles in 2008.
My BMW 525i although a sedan but has similar engine configuration inline 6.
The Supra 2.8L DOHC engine was far more smoother, stronger and flexible than my BMW 2.5L SOHC.
More importantly, Toyota engine, transmission, suspension and electrical systems hold up so well over the years even after 1/4 million miles on the odometer. The BMW on the other hand was falling apart after only 155K miles. Parts and service way to expensive to restore the BMW to good condition.
Toyota Spare parts logistics is unparalleled by any standard, from the point I ordered a rare part not in dealer stock, I ordered by 4pm, parts arrived by 6am next morning. BMW takes 1 to 2 weeks and cost is usually 100% more.
We r’ talking about BMW and Lexus now.
Mahdi Azimi Lexus company owned by Toyota
great video, I rarely comment but this is well produced and thought out
I’m goona watch this at least once a year I love Chris and Lexus so much lol
“The VTEC bois will love that” lol he says I want to see and hear this Lexus for myself haha
lexus is real shit in case of look and performance .... germans are better
Many people only buy it for looks. Lexus more affordable. Why would i every need to go that fast in a bmw?
😎🔥GSF🇯🇵😍
this was beautifully shot
What a wonderful review !
