Victims of narcissists usually have a terrible behavior against their kids because of the manipulation of their abuser. Does that mean the mother should be excused ? Does that mean that she's not an abuser. Absolutely not. But you absolutely can't say that she is "just as bad as him" because he absolutely is the main abuser and manipulator here.
The mother isn't a narcissist, the father is. She still had a terrible behavior.

She chose to protect herself than her kids ...it's not the kids' place to protect their parent by sacrificing themselves. This hits so close to home that it angers me.

I think it's important to keep in mind that she might be afraid of what will happen to her if she leaves him. Maybe she feels obligated to stay with him because they have children. There could be many reasons why she chooses to stay with him. It's not a good situation for the children at all though and it certainly is not a good situation for either of them.
I think the husband is a little bit more to blame here. Like phil said, he "set the house on fire" and then rescued everyone. We can imagine the mother getting out of the situation without the children, but the husband originally created the problem.

He's a narcissist hoping to have his choices validated by Dr. Phil and the audience. That's all narcs care about- public opinion and exerting control over their families.
It's about control, if he loses his family those are the last people that he can easily manipulate and abuse without consequence. It takes abusers decades to set up a situation like this where they're the only one with real power and losing it means having to find another victim (mostly women with low self esteem and a history of being abused) and going through the 2-3 years of acting nice and setting up the framework for this kind of situation.

It's usually about denial. When a chronic abuse victim doesn't want to believe what's happening to them, they stick around. But in this case, it sounds like she's dealing with her abuse by turning narcissistic. "If I say I do no wrong and I convince others that I have no fault, then I am innocent."
My own mother only cared about protecting herself and still denies what happened to me to this day. She can't accept that she married a monster.

To me there’s a lot more to the story, and I think that both parents are vindictive to each other. Both have been pushed past breaking point by each other, that they both are hurting a lot also they are getting hassled by their kids I think(no excuses for violence or threatening behaviour against any of them),I think too much has been said/done by all they need to go separate ways so everyone can get better. Go through a 3rd party when it comes to the kids and stay out of each other way. It’s sad when relationships get this far out of love. Hope everyone involved gets better/happier soon
