This is SO fascinating and sad at the same time.
I was fortunate to never have experienced this type of interaction growing up (I was the oldest, male and had two sister's, one 2 years younger and one 12yrs younger).
Our first is a daughter, now 24, college graduate and a son, 21 and a college senior.
We never have had any issues, profane language, yelling or even spanking etc.
My daughter is on her own and my son is so organized and responsible, I feel inadequate.
I don't know how it all happened.
We did a "ton" of family activities. They were home schooled through 6th grade with public schools the rest of the way.
We did family tent camping starting at 8 WEEKS, I don't know what possessed us! My daughter "aged out" at fifteen (her eyes "rolled back" in her head........nothing MORE embarrassing than to be seen in public with one's parents and younger brother).
We did a lot of hiking, picnicking, bicycling, Cub and Boy Scouts, downhill skiing, local state day trips, little league baseball, our daughter was a "swim-aholic" doing the whole cub swimming racing thing (HER idea! "legalized child abuse"). Not our son, hated swimming, too cold.
Our son ran high-school varsity x-country and downhill ski racing, tennis team (both my wife played tennis) and was in most of the theater productions and made it to state drama competitions (Wis.)
My daughter started organized choral singing at age six through a local university, eventually singing with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus as jr. in high-school (the only one in the chorus of 120).
She sang through college and still is.
Both started on band instruments through home school groups in 4th grade. Continuing through public middle and high-school (State Division AAAA band marching champions). Learning clarinet was not their idea, I had a clarinet/sax studio for years, they had no choice).
Both attended one week summer music clinics run by the UW-MADISON music dept. (for the last 90yrs) through high-school).
My son entered college as an applied physics major, played in the 475 member university marching band, the largest Division Three marching band in the country.
He went to the "DARK-SIDE" last year, his idea, and is a music ed. major.
That's our "story", so it's difficult to comprehend being in a family dynamic that results in such dire situations. I guess we "lucked out".
