      The Steadfast Duelist heya, pro tour Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic TCG player here, rarely do any of us handle cards, sleeved or otherwise, with gloves, most cards are really not worth enough to warrant it, the oils on your hands won’t damage the cards, certainly not in the probably 10 or fewer minutes the vendor handled them. I am very good friends with all the people at many LGSs in my area, and personally help at two of them, and have never seen anyone well acquainted with TCGs wear gloves in order to handle a card besides some very highly valued and rare cards. In MTG circles I know Vintage players who occasionally wear disposable kitchen gloves to handle their 20000 USD Alpha Black Lotus and similar immensely valued cards (and one guy who wears fingerless biker gloves while playing because he thinks it looks cool) but besides those very rare cases it’s simply unnecessary. I regularly sleeve, unsleeve, and double sleeve cards without gloves, including my 3100 USD legacy deck.

      Basically if that value is that low in good conditions then it was never worth what you payed for to begin with and companies are ripping you off. In games, well considering the time money and rescources it is to make one, and prices to buy one, i disagree. Never sell games to gamestop would i. so far ive only traded in my friends old ds games they didnt care about or want cuz they were mostly junk. they gave us 8 bucks to get another game. ...that is not how i expected it to go. I was led to believe they take the value of each indivual game and you can get 1 game per game that has the same or less value of that 1 game. (so 4 games to TRADE should have been 4 games of same or less value.) Nope. it was 2 games out of 4. and had to use some of my own money to get.

      @@singami465 Not sure where you heard that. Any card so long as it's not a proxy is legal in any event, this goes for MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh as well. However Pokemon cards printed in Japan had a longer printing than English cards did. They're still worth something just not quite as much as English cards. Newer cards aren't really affected by this because these card games are quite established and most will know what the card does without having to read it.

      Many people collect only Pokémon cards that are good for playing. So they don't care if the Charizard card is not in a mint condition - they only care if it is a genuine Pokémon card so they can use it also in the official tournaments (if there are games where the old card sets are used). If the card is rare or pretty it does not matter to those people if the card is awful when used in a game. There are plenty of other trading card game cards that are not rare but the players still pay ridiculously high prices to get them for their playing deck.

    There are two types of Pokemon TCG consumers: players and collectors. Generally, players won't buy old cards because they can't play them and collectors generally only buy cards that are in MINT condition. So yeah, this store owner is absolutely right: most of these cards are near worthless. Just because something is old doesn't mean it's rare or valuable.

      Jeremy Niewinski My family were players and generally we didn't go out of our way to play with old cards. Most of the time with the old cards the only use we'd get out of them was to use them if they were cards that came into rotation again such as potions or copy cats, basically old versions of cards that have a new version that plays the same exact way as the old card. Or energy cards since those always remain the same. Even then, we wouldn't buy them if they were for sale more than the new version of the card was. Besides, we never really bought cards, we mostly just bought two boxes every set and usually that gave us enough to set up whatever broken deck was popular at that point.

    Going through the comments I see some common gripes thrown around and I’d just like to clear some up to defend this poor LGS manager.
    Most common issue is the “oh no these cards are worth thousands in the right condition, this liar!” Which just are wrong. In gem mint, the Charizards shown would sell for about 70£, they aren’t graded, AND they aren’t the originals. The 3000 USD Charizard is from what is essentially the trial run of this set of cards, a printing that had no black “shadow” on its art boarder (the yellow box surrounding the photo of charizard, not the yellow around the whole card). This is what people mean by shadowless, not a charizard with no shadow, but a card frame without one.
    Next, his grading of the cards. The most basic explanation is that no camera is good at picking up the tiny scratches and knicks that add up to devalue a card, it’s just much easier to see in person and his appraisal is almost certainly based on shit we can’t see. Beckett graded cards are worth slightly more with good grades, or much more with exceptional grades, but these loose cards MUST be valued at a percentage of their accepted resale value, you can’t treat a card you think is perfect as a Becket Pristine Mint, they’re scale is based on not only the damage, but even the factory’s printing of the card, a card a few millimetres off centre loses .5 of a grade instantly, you can’t possibly appraise that on your own in a few seconds, certainly not through a video.
    Last thing I’ll defend is his offer of 25£ for a valued 45£ card. Tl;dr his store needs to make a profit. The cards will most likely sit around Sneak Attack for a few months before a collector who would buy them will show up. They’re beat up, ungraded, unsleeved, and not very rare. Collectors do like these kind of cards, but only in very good condition, a collector who will buy even a lightly played card is hard to find, because the cards are too easy to find. What real collectors want are either high quality versions of the original shadowless cards, or Near-Mint or higher versions of the cards in the video.

At my LGS new players are often given free cardboard or starter collection deck boxes for their cards, it’s safer. In all probability, he gets one maybe two ex-collectors in his store a week, a quarter of which bring their stuff into the store wrapped in elastics, and he probably hands them back the pile and the elastic so they can wrap their cards back up themselves.

    • @AlphaTengua
      @AlphaTengua 6 років тому

      * And what you originally payed for it, and what it is to you. If you payed 40+ $ for something brand new when it was loaded like nuts on the shelves.. (or at least a fair amount -LE's/specials/rares) then wait 20+ yrs, take damned good care of it and its NO LONGER in print, and people want it because of such rarity value. you could sell logically from 15-50+$ imho. Value drops from original price if its used and worn. But Rarity / No longer in the makes boosts it back up, like gamecubes. etc. - Another value booster is if you got it rated and "Proof" its a real card or official or a "misprint". People be selling money for money cuz of misprint lol

    American here; I collected the entire base set when it was in original circulation in the late 90's. I put EVERY card in its own clear sleeve, and then put every card into 3x3 sheets like in this video. I haven't touched them, they are mint. It is NOT the 1st edition set, but the "unlimited" or whatever base set right after. What would the entire set be worth???

      Menachem Sacho simply not true. The most expensive version of that card is the shadowless, base set first printing, first print run charizard, which is worth about 3500 USD in Gem-Mint condition. The cards in the video are both probably damaged to medium played, and both have the shadow (the darkened boarder around the yellow card art boarder) making them nowhere near the price people associate with the card

    2:18 that charzard it’s not first edition, it doesn’t have a stamp on it and it’s shadowed( for people who don’t know their were three first sets printed, first edition with a stamp the shadowless without the shadow on the side but also without the stamp and then the shadow the lowest set) so it’s on,y worth what he said but first edition charzards can actually be yes $600 pounds and whatever

    The last zard you show (Base Set) Is in decent condition, 20-25 pounds is not enough for it to be honest. I have 33 base set charizards in nm/m condition. I've sold and bought cards for years. 2-3 years ago 20-25 sure, today. You'll get atleast 40 for it. No doubt. Where I live you could get 70-90 pounds for that zard, not even joking (Sweden) I've sold plenty. At the moment im just stacking up all I can find for under 40 pounds, to get em graded for future investments.

    Back in 2005 when i was 6 years old i got my first card as a gift from a friend i was so happy i had to win more because my Parents thought it was stupid amount of money and they didn't buy a pack for me so what i did was play a match at school who ever throws furthest would take both of the cards so after 2 weeks of playing i had 15 cards it made me proud but most of the people had 150 to 200 carda even girls had 50 cards their elders had money to buy them big packs while i had bad cards and had to win them. so this keept going on and in 2007 after 1.5 years i had around 180 Cards each of them were earned and my parents still didn't had the money to buy a card after 3 years of playing inn 2008 when i was 9 i had won a total of 350 cards including multiple same cards. i was known to be the best Pokémon card thrower of the whole school and streets. in those 3 years i had played to older kids who were 4 years older then me or even more what they did was almost never give the card i won they just scammed and trade bad cards to me. back in these days the highest HP card was the best. but in 2009 when i was just 10 the hype was gone nobody played anymore so i thought of selling my cards i didn't know how money worked back then and sold 400 well earned nostalgic cards for just € 10 to a guy that was 15 years old i was happy when i bought something with that money i guess bought candy for all of it but after 1 Month till this day i regret Selling your Childhood i could have sold my cards for€ 350 now a days but i highly regret its just selling a part of your childhood it is something you can never buy back. i am so mad to my self i am 19 now and have nothing left over to look at and remember my child hood. BTW my win ratio was around 75% so i kept getting more and more cards i even had tactical throws when it was windy i could throw a card up to 30 meters away. R.i.p. Pokémon Cards :(

    Certain Pokemon cards can be worth a lot of money, especially if they are PSA 10 graded which means they are absolutely perfect, from the condition and the printing alignment. If you look on Ebay a shiny PSA 10 graded Charizard would be into the £1000s. It is a professional level of grading which far exceeds a shop owner giving a quick glance saying it is in x condition. These PSA graded cards are extremely rare as from the second the perfectly printed ones were opened in the 90s, they've barely been touched and sealed for so many years.
