I read in an interview with Eiji Aonuma that his main inspiration for TOTK was the wacky glitch machines players would make in BOTW, such as the 2 minecarts together turning into a flying machine with magnesis.
Legit? I feel like a lot of us said that as a joke, it would low key be pretty cool if there was actual truth to that

The sequence of events that lead up to getting the Master Sword back are some of my favorite moments in any Zelda game ever.
Just got it last night with my daughter watching the related memories. She was in awe of the pull and following cutscene.

Really is great. Most single player games, I'll do the main story and maybe a bit of side content. This game, I'm deff going to 100%
Dude the dragon tear memories basically ARE the story, you've gotta finish that, the final scene is insane, especially in context if you kind of do things "in order". Totally agree that the end cutscenes for each of the temples was weird though, the same dialogue each time really broke the immersion.
The memories are the story, true, but tbh it's still pretty run of the mill jrpg shit. Nothing about it is really attention grabbing or original, but also I definitely wasn't attracted to botw or totk for the story, so it's not really anything I care about
@@tccfan1I agree ur sentiment but this story isn’t jrpg 😭😭 it’s more akin to western high-fantasy story telling if anything. Like if it was jrpg it would have a ton of absolutely bonkers concepts and mind bending villains and shit (this is a generification but it gets the point across, jrpgs usually have much more complex stories) so calling it “usual jrpg story” is a bit disingenuous
(Well complex in what they are, the concepts in them get so over used and thrown around that it devolves into being generic and predictable)

Tears of the kingdom has one of the best endings for a game I’ve seen since god of war, Ragnarok. I was completely prepared to never see Zelda again after I found out about the whole dragon transformation.

i know its a small detail but when zelda went to pick up the stone in the beginning, she felt it before actually picking it up to check if it was dangerous, that sort of small attention to detail just really made me like the game more. they didnt have to add it in but they did. what a great game, this is what we get when we let developers take their time making games and not rush them.
yeah it was a good detail since it fell from a creepy mummy with gloom spewing out of it
That exact thing stood out to me when I first watched that scene.

Charlie is right about the puzzles. There's times were I solve a shrine and then I have to sit back for a moment and think, "Is that REALLY what was intended?" But unironically that makes it way more fun
I can’t even count how many times I’ve broken shrines through a bomb jump or the ol “master hand+recall” trick.
The game devs intend for you to break it because they know thats more satisfying
I always love finding the sketchiest, most overcomplicated way of solving a shrine and thinking wow i have 0 clue how this was supposed to be solved. Really makes me feel like an idiot savant.

I have definitely gone online to see how other people solved things just because I know building a giant bridge or gliding off a master hand/recall platform was not the intended solution, haha.

@@TimelessSnake that first question is insane. yes, 90% of 100 is 9/10. wtf lol
I think the tears story line is actually incredible. The demon king boss end fight was super powerful if you knew what was going on. A+ no notes.
I agree with u, the plot was very good but I wish they connected it more with the timeline better and explained it in a different way rather than the memories again and the old sages saying the same thing, only complaints I have with it tho
i agree and i think it definitely benefitted from being a sequel so i felt a lot more connected and emotionally attatched to the characters and the world right away as opposed to being introduced to another brand new story like in basically every other zelda game.
well one thing is that this takes place right before skyward sword on the timeline, and its a sequel to botw, all zelda games on the timeline converge to botw and in skyward sword, demise cures everyone to an endless cycle of reincarnation so its all one giant loop
Eh I would have to disagree. The thing that made me not love it was HOW is this connected to Breath of The Wild? Oh my god it drives me crazy - no explanation whatsoever of what happened to the guardians and the divine beasts and it's just so frustrating. How did they not touch on that stuff at all? Unless they're making a third installment and waiting til that game to explain it or something, I don't know. Zelda's story in this was pretty cool, but the whole "there once was an imprisoning war and now Ganon is imprisoned" thing over and over everywhere you go just got so annoying.

I think the fusing system majorly helps a little further into the game in terms of durability. When you get to a point where you have a bunch of really good treasures for fusing, you can make a good weapon out of literal sticks without worrying about it breaking and losing your loot. It takes away major amounts of stress for finding powerful weapons in some small corner of the map.
Still a lot of time fumbling through menus when I'm trying to fight a mob, though.

yep, but the console, YIKES
And Its true
The opening music where you’re exploring the tunnel is some of the best PG horror music I’ve ever experienced.
Also there are THREE maps instead of one. 30/10.
The backwards vocals used in some of the game's music is spine tingling they nailed the eerie feel.
@@MrStatement I love that they’re still using the Guardian piano motif as a reminder of the danger you’re placing yourself in, but it’s a slightly different melody. Such great music. I remember people were a little put off by the modest music in BotW, but it became more iconic because of how seamless it blended with the environment.
@@MrStatement wow i didnt even realize. This game is amazing
I love the durability system. It encourages you to use different weapons and actively change how you play on the fly.
the reason i disagree is because, you arent really using diferent weapons, what you are doing is ignoring them and treating them as stat sticks. they lose all personality.
compare it with dark souls, where people will fight to the death to defend their favorite weapon, because, while the diference is slight, its still enough to be unique. even for stuff that is underused like bows or spears.
you wont get that with this durability system because weapons stop being worth caring for. you just use what you have and move on.
the worst part is how it feels like it punish the player for trying to fight stuff. as you will lose resources for stuff that, most often than not will just be used in the same way.
so while i understand it has people who like it, i just vehemently disagree its a good implementation of the system.
I don't love or hate it. I just never saw it as a thing to complain about, especially in TOTK. It is so incredibly forgivable. You are picking up material CONSTANTLY that makes incredible weapons.
@@smitty7326 Agreed. TOTK is definitely better about this for that reason than BOTW
@@marcosdheleno while i also am not a fan of the durability system, and i dont like how it trivialise every weapons as just tools to an end (especially when like, weapon like the master sword sitll ''Breaks''..), TOTK helps a lot with the issue of punishing for fighting stuff. I farmed Lynels to upgrade my gear and i got more weapons back than i could hold, i had to throw stuff out to carry them. since you get a weapon + their shield + their bow + their mat loot + a new horn loot, which can all be used as weapon upgrades. instead of just getting one weapon and a bow and shield.
@@marcosdheleno The problem with having no durability system means that the rewards of new weapons become meaningless, as you'll always revert to your OP weapon.
I say they should have had special inventory slots that you could bound a weapon to the slot and that would keep it from disappearing once it breaks.
-Once enough time has elapsed, the weapon comes back, similar to the Master Sword.
-The more attack power it does, the longer it takes to come back (up to a point).
-You could probably have up to 3 slots per item type, and they would always be the last 3 slots before you max a specific item category out.
-Also, these items come back once if they're out of your inventory for a set period of time (ex. if you've thrown the item or dropped it from taking electrical damage), but will immediately be broken.
-Any Zonai devices are not retained and, for all intents and purposes, cannot be bound.
Just my idea that I immediately pulled out of my ass, but I'm not a game designer so what do I know.
I am still playing Tears of the kingdom right now, and everything in this game is amazing! It's is without a doubt the single greatest game of this decade, and absolutely deserved GOTY in 2023.

It's the same topography, not the same map, and even then they tweak it a fair bit. The way they pulled this off was incredible.
The depths and gloom mechanic make the game so much better combat wise. The new temples also VASTLY outpace the old divine beasts. Amazing game
Yeah my only complaint was that the temples were a bit easy, but they’re definitely better than the divine beasts
@@zanemeyer6006 I've only played 1 temple so far. The intro was easy but there was one harder puzzle. At this point I'm not expecting anything to resemble Stone tower temple or the Spirit temple. Only done goron and rito so far, but I'm a bit upset that the general building material for both temples are the same generic zonai stone. They're definitely more themed than divine beasts but it still feels kiiinda generic. So far they've been pretty easy too which is a little disappointing
@@zanemeyer6006 fire temple was kinda hard, I had to climb a lot to navigate the floors because the minecart system is a little convoluted. but yeah the temples aren't that hard but definitely massive improvement over divine beasts. bosses are also SO much better

6:15 what Charlie mentioned here is legitimately the best vehicle in the game. depending on how hard you pull back on the joystick, it's an air, land, or sea vehicle. it's only 2 moving parts so it's incredibly fuel efficient. it's only 3 pieces so it's very material-light. and it's made of such common components that if you want to autobuild it but don't have the parts, it costs barely anything. it's two fans angled slightly, attached to a joystick. experiment with the angle and you'll get it. attatch a Giant Brightbloom to the front for easy Depths exploration. it's an Omni-Vehicle, all-purpose. if you're not using it, start.

I just love when something as dumb as that works
i think the amount of things you can do in the game is so cool and you’re so right about it being completely up to the player on how to solve puzzles.
There's something I really like about this game over the first one that I don't see many people point out. Now most kinds of weapon have a special property (Royal weapons become more powerful when you flurry rush, Rito weapons produce wind, Zora weapons gain an attack boost when wet). This gives you an actual reason to have more variety of weapons for each situation. Instead, in Botw the Royal weapons were basically the best, only being beaten by Royal Guard weapons in exchange for durability.
Dude the soundtrack blew me the fuck out of the water. I honestly thought I'd never feel this moved in a new way by a soundtrack ever again, this game definitely has its epic sections. I had high expectations and it exceeded pretty much every single one of them.

I totally agree. The story I think was still incredibly charming even if not as well written as I'd have hoped. Everything involving the demon king had me on the edge of my seat, not because of incredible dialogue or anything but just the presentation of it is so perfectly executed.

Princess Zelda ‘wakes up’ from her draconic slumber and falls through the sky. I loved how the pond that you catch Zelda in is the same pool you dived in after the Great Sky Island. @@trombonist-bo6yi I 100% agree with you, and on top of that it felt like something straight from like Studio Ghibli. The ending is on par with the ending of Skyward Sword to me, just from emotional value alone
Yeah the portrayal of Ganondorf in TOTK was probably the best in the franchise, they went the extra mile to make him seem like the biggest threat we've ever faced. I mean shit the opening cutscene is him destroying the Master Sword, it sets the tone for the whole thing right there.
Its the best game I played in years. Jumping from breath of the wild to this has just been a joy.
The Ultrahand system feels like the pinnacle of open world crafting. It absolutely will be used as an entirely new base floor for years to come, exactly like how minecraft was.
I am genuinely amazed that the Zelda team was able to stick the landing this well after the litany of developmental difficulties. Breath of the Wild felt like the best video game ever made and this is just better in *almost* every way.
Charlie should definitely get the memories. Watching the cutscenes for them has been one of my favorite parts of the game. I feel like anyone who doesn't watch them is missing out on so much

It should be noted that the overworld has the same overall structure but every single location has changed in at least some way, whenever I go to a familiar area it feels completely new because of all the little changes
One of the best parts in my opinion about the video is not only that he explains things incredibly but also that he only shows clips of him on the great sky island (the tutorial area) so not to spoil too much of the game
I feel like durability is necessary in this game. It encourages experimentation with the fuse mechanic. In the first game it was mostly just a way to have Link find new weapons instead of using the same ones the entire game, but in this game it actually makes sense.
I do agree that is annoying how the switch holds back the game graphically and with the performance, but you can't deny that diving from a sky island with beautiful soundtrack while taking a poop has to be one of the most magical experiences.

I saw some videos of Botw that was modded into 8K 60 FPS and realized how much of an L Nintendo was taking
@@lecorvoxD
@@likasomeboooDEEI don't think it's that much of an L when they sold over 25 million copies of that game lol
I think the fuse mechanic is the perfect answer to weapon durability. In BotW, it sucked because if there was a sword you like and it breaks, you’re SOL and have to find another one. But in TotK, as long as you pick up sticks you will always have a good weapon available. Your stone axe broke? Fuse a soldier construct horn to a stick, bam you’ve got a damn good weapon. And of course the stronger the enemy type your monster part comes from, the more damage it does. So you have more incentive to go after higher level monsters instead of avoiding them, knowing that defeating them will give you materials for a damn good weapon.
As far as fusing like a rake to your sword or whatever, yeah that stuff can be kind of dumb. But that’s just not where Fuse shines, in terms of practicality.
I just love that ability.
Another great thing about this game is how interesting the open world feels. I can’t walk to one point of interest without seeing 2 or 3 others that I want to visit along the way. It’s exponential and at times I feel overwhelmed. But it just means I have way more stuff to get to later. I absolutely love this game.
Downside is this reduces the available chest rewards even more because all the best stuff is an enemy drop. So I find there's not much to open chests for... besides arrows lol
I feel the opposite about durability
@@theclownofclowns chests occasionally contain very useful items like sage wills or crystallized charges so I still go after them
It’s an interesting fix to an unnecessary problem. I like that they decided to do something interesting with weapons though, even if most of the unique weapons have been removed as a result.
But it still feels like they’re just papering over the fundamental problems with the simplistic combat system with a gimmick. I already didn’t get excited getting fragile weapons from chests so the exploration rewards getting worse don’t affect me personally that much. Exploration was kind of just its own reward in BotW too.
@@theclownofclowns Sage Wills are the answer to your issue about chests
I am so thankful my buddy grabbed me a collector's edition at the last moment. I remember one of my first Halloween costumes was the original Link (My uncle built a real shield out of plywood and leather) and it was sickkkk!
I found at towards the mid-game to late game the durability systems not that bad because with the fusion system you can make any weapon a really good weapon with fuse.

A vast majority of the side quests in this game are either really well written or just fun to complete. Usually it’s both
Let's also give props to the fact that they crammed it into 16GB
True, if it was made by Ubisoft it would've been definitely 60 GB or some shit
After learning they had oil in this game (not in BotW) and thinking nothing of the chicken legs as they were being counted as beef for most meals, I experimented and put them together, along with a spicy pepper. No joke my mouth flew agape when I made spicy chicken wings. Like idk why that made me so amazed but it was kind of a moment for me. Love this game
They probably added oil to atract the american marked
Dude I get the feeling. The whole time in botw I was always thinking "man I really wish they had garlic and tomatoes in this game". When I found oil, the first thing I did was fry chicken lmao.

I think the thing that makes me believe TotK is pretty much perfect is that if you aren't big on creative problem-solving and having too much to do, there are still linear ways of beating every challenge the game throws at you, which truly allows ultimate player freedom.
You can do the simple, intended thing and have a blast. You can make the stupidest contraption ever that only half-works and forces you to improvise partway through, and it's a blast. No matter what kind of player you are, the game is designed with you in mind. The only real issue I can see people having with the gameplay is its vastness being overwhelming and/or sometimes annoying to traverse. I may be biased, but I genuinely having a hard time seeing people's preferred playstyle clashing with the game in any other way, and that's an incredible feat.
Of course, this is coming from someone who's happy with any quality above 360p at 15FPS, so my input may not be the best on that front, haha
So far I have noticed that if you fuse a common weapon to an epic weapon the common weapon will take the durability damage for the base weapon so you can use those epic weapons as much as you like
The Legend of Zelda games (specifically BotW and TotK) are some of the only games that can be 75% random filler content and still make it way better than the vast majority of other games and leave fans wanting more of it lol. The Switch hardware lets them down, definitely, but they're so amazingly and artistically crafted that 99% of the time it's hard to care; you just want to keep playing anyway
Weapons breaking in this game is alot less annoying than in BOTW, it feels like it takes longer, and you can increase durability by fusing. You still gotta be mindful of what weapons you're using to like break hard objects, that'll wear them down faster, but like a stone hammer will go through many crates and hard rock but you'll lose your spear in short order trying to do the same.
I think the durability system is close to perfection, much better balanced than in BotW, which is awesome
I ended up using Younobo for breaking large rock walls. They also drop enough broadswords and rocks to make more hammers when yours eventually breaks.
@@bug2744 It fixes itself in 10 minutes, and unless you're going straight from camp to camp, you can get alot of use off of it. I use it largely for the little guys and save the really strong breakable weapons for silvers and bosses, and try to repair them after a blood moon.
@@TheJadeFist It's still the god damn master sword though man. It should perform a LOT better than how it currently does. I'm hoping there's a dlc like in BoTW that increases it's durability or something.
Plus aesthetic reasons. I would really like to use the sword with a hylian shield more often after going through the quests for it
I completely disagree with all the negatives about how this runs or how it’s technically behind. The fact this game runs like this is an engineering miracle. Name any game that has this much going on has a world half this size and runs better. You can’t. I mean you can go the highest point in the game, jump fall down to earth, keep going through a hole to the depths, go all the way to the ground there and never load, never chug, nothing and the whole time it will look drop dead gorgeous and have a draw distance that other games would die for.
And that whole time it does it on the fucking switch!?!?! I keep hearing people say it runs like BOTW but I disagree. When BOTW launched it ran way worse than this. This game runs like BOTW does today after tons of patches. Nintendo did some god damn black wizardry to make this game go. They are still the masters of their craft.
" The fact this game runs like this is an engineering miracle." you do realize that you are basically agreeing with him there right? you are basically "doesnt matter if it runs like shit, to me it just working feels like magic!"
wanna know something? you can run the original doom in a calculator, smart refrigerator or even a freaking pregnance test. that doesnt mean its the best way to play it.
its the same thing here, so what if it CAN run on the switch? how does that negates all the frame drops and mediocre frame rate? specially since if it were to run on an emulator it would get double to 4x that fps. maybe even while scaled to 4k as well.
and before you argument about the switch being basically a mobile console, lets not forget the steam deck, which, while not as powerful as a OCd pc, will still be able to play it better in a couple of months, maybe a year at most.
I mean that’s exactly his point.
@@marcosdheleno he spent the entire video saying it runs bad and the graphics are bad. I mean he kind of hit on these points but not really. He said over and over again how behind Nintendo is on technology and it’s completely silly when clearly they have some of the best engineers in the industry
Also love all the people who clearly know nothing of emulation talking about how much better it runs. Yes with 15 mods, hours to compile shaders, and a very powerful gaming rig, yes you can run the game better. 4x and 4k is only going to accessible to an extremely tiny minority. Most people will run it the same or worse than switch after hours of configuration. Or it can pretty damn smooth on the switch with just frame drops during tons of physic stuff, which happens on emulators too and happens on all physic based games.
I have a steam deck. The deck can’t run most switch games very well. It runs BOTW way worse than a switch. This game will never run better on the steam deck. All the people who say the steam deck is better switch because of emulation don’t know wtf they are talking about. There are a handful of games you can play better but the majority of games you would want to play you cannot.
@Ayu Akua 1. dude I played link to the past when it came out and had already played the original on the nes though I was too young to have that the year it came out. The original sure as hell wasn’t on the 64…. I was like 13 when ocarina came out. But yes Nintendo was around before anyone was born. They are over a hundred years old so unless you are secretly 200 hundred years old they are older than you too …
2. Wow Nintendo is a big company???? Who knew???? This might seem like big news that thinks the original Zelda came out on n64 and think they are old for having played it but to others this is well known. Not even sure what your point is

I am currently 30 hrs in and having a blast
The fact that this game maintains a mostly solid 30 FPS on the switch, is a technological miracle and the devs of this game are actual wizards. The amount of computational complexity going on especially due to the way the different systems interact with each other naturally - and yet the game doesn’t crash or glitch out of control is amazing. Haven’t seen any bugs in my play through so far.

I like that they focused more on giving players freedom to just have fun however they want to have fun. There is so much to do in this game, but you don't even need to do any of it. Just the base mechanics alone are fun enough that you can just use those and go have fun doing whatever the hell you want to without even aknoledging the story. I also really appreciate, that, while it's no masterpiece, they did add a pretty good story with some genuine twists if you go through and collect all the memories to piece it together. I feel like so many games try to restict the player as much as possible these days, but I'm so incredibly relieved to see they did just the opposite, giving us as much freedom as possible while still having real puzzles that take effort and thought and have so many possible solutions. Overall an amazing game.

I think the story was pretty fantastic, but I do agree about the repetitive parts it shows after the boss fights. I understand why, because it’s the ancient explaining their side of the same story the other ancients shared, but to their specific present day champion. Pretty sure they did that so that it would be the same regardless of which boss you went to first. However, they could have made it to where it triggers more informative scenes as you progress through each one. Example would be you get the same first cutscene triggered by the first dungeon just whatever spin that region is. Following that you’d get a different 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, each giving new info with their specific regional spin.
I think the champion dialogue being the same is due to being able to do them in any order. It's not a good thing, mind you, but I believe that is the core reason. I wish you learned more about them as people and characters in the curscenes. That would have made it better.
