It was legitimately so weird how all marketing around TOTK revolved around the sky islands, when they just ended up being a handful of small optional shrines
@@lilaclunablossom it’s not a lie, have you seen the map of the sky islands? That and building a car was the only thing they could show in the trailers. Why are you simping so hard for a first party Nintendo game
I was worried about that too. Seeing how Skyward sword didn't quite get the mark with that, I was skeptical on how they would handle sky islands with a bigger map. And turns out they still struggled in that area. Nintendo at times has the right idea for things but has poor execution
The number one thing that threw me off in Tears of The Kingdom is how all of the sheikah technology was just completely missing with no explanation as to why. It just made it seem so disconnected from BOTW
Well, not completely missing. You can see a number of spots where it's been repurposed or scavenged for parts, but yeah, they didn't explain a lot of it
To be fair, the 5th sage actually showed us what actually happened and gave one of the most badass scenes involving royalty characters not named Zelda. But yes i agree it was way too repetitive.
I mean in totk's defense, imagine if you're getting sent out on a battle/ war with NO context of whats happening so your world doesn't succumb to destruction and only your silent friend knows what's going on. Sounds kinda like being drafted
@@ContraG right exactly. When a character is that underbaked and pointless, yet presented as important and tragic, it leaves a really terrible taste in your mouth.
Honestly I feel the biggest thing by far that holds TOTK back is how much it wants to copy BOTW in terms of gameplay but wants to disconnect with BOTW in terms of story. Copying the shrines, temple order, story structure, combat, enemies, UI, items, and unlockables to be nearly identical from BOTW makes the game feel way less unique and fresh. But at the same time, the game weirdly never wants to reference BOTW in the story at any cost.
Seriously, it is also trying to have its cake and eat it too. It's trying to be a game for people who never played BoTW, but also trying to be a game for people who played BoTW. As a result its just comes off as a poorly thought out mess that is neither here nor there. It is kind of embarrassing that this is all we got after 6 years and them having the head start of reusing the map...
The story is awful and I hate the Zonai design so much. "Ancient warrior tribe" in Botw Somehow turned into weird Furry foxkin human hybrids. They don't even feel like a Zelda creature, it feels like some weird DeviantArt crap
The fact Scott told his followers on Twitter to upload a voice sample for him to use for a skit shows that this is already a brilliant video, but it’s wholesome for him to do that.
The fact that he asked his entire audience on Twitter to send in voice samples to use in this skit is awesome. It’s great to see he enjoys fan interaction. I think I heard the sample I sent in very briefly during the jumble of dialogue at the end. If so, thanks for including me, Scott!
Scott's summary of TotK's plot is spot on. Also, I like how Ganondorf, for some reason, just chills underground waiting for you to get to him until the end of Link's journey. At least Ocarina of Time Ganondorf had an excuse in the second half, because he essentially won.
@@willbland981most of the time items will tell you what they do when you cook them if you read their description, this sounds like your reading comprehension skills r Dawg shit
Agreed. Gloom resistance is new to me, but I haven't even finished the game yet (doing side quests whenever I get around to playing TOTK). Gloom healing on the other hand is explained/hinted at early on and is kind of a must to explore the depths.
the reason why the depths feel autogenerated is because it's literally the inverted topography of the main map. The heights are lows and lows are heights. But it's still cool to explore it every once in a while
that's the reason indeed - but not an excuse. lierally only like 10% Depths max is truly worth exploring, 90% is boring, repetitive, one-note grindfest. they should have trimmed SO much fat in this game and Depths are a prime example.
The depths were a cool idea but I wish they did flush it out with more cool ideas like more insects down there or different fuse items. Hell theres a ton of spirits down there as well, could easily make side quests or whatnot to let them rest in piece
Problem is, I feel like people look to the Depths as if it’s supposed to be seen as an entirely secondary map equivalent to Hyrule. It’s not. It’s like cave systems in a game like Terraria or Sundew Valley, used to collect resources and the like that you use top side. It also incentivizes you to use Zonai vehicles and inventions more to navigate than is necessary topside.
I love how the final Ganondorf boss fight just freaks you the fuck out. The extra-long hp bar, dodging flurry rushes, and permanent health removal is good at getting you to fix your posture.
That fight was the perfect example of that meme of that guy sitting straight up on his chair, it's exactly what I did once I saw that my HP loss was essentially permanent in the fight.
On top of that stuff, another bit that hit me was when fucking up like 3 parries was enough to get the "Hylian Shield is heavily damaged" notice. That is one hell of a way to give a Zelda veteran an "oh shit" face.
I wish the sky had more weight in the story. Prologue and two temples was the entire content. After that, we only have grinding points or shortcuts. The cover sell us a story about the sky but the most important part of the game is underground
@@Danielgil28893-x Agreed, I did partake in all shrines, and lightroots, and while the Underground was the best place to mass collect pristine weapons, Amiibo items (assuming players don't own Zelda franchise Amiibo), and a ton of Zonaite for crystallized charges leading to more batteries, there's so much emptiness that you could almost write an elegy joking aside, the Depths being an inverted layout of the surface is really cool, its flora is really creative, and it leaves to imagination how much the Zonai used to thrive down there... although they could have done a tiny bit of a Skyward Sword moment by showing us how lively the depths were and gathering exclusive items that way
Fun fact. If you don't do any of the dungeons prior to fighting Gannon, you have to fight harder versions of every boss in the game before you can fight Gannon. That includes the horde of enemies which you now have to deal with yourself.
20:31 something that I just realized that I really miss from breath of the wild is the little scenes that we got of the champions and their Divine beasts after you beat the dungeon. Revalis honestly made me tear up when I first saw it. Breath of the wilds story just felt so much more personal
I adore Breath of The Wild because it’s oh so obvious that you are playing in a world where the good guys lost. The world is overrun with monsters and the NPCs are coping with this destruction and fear in their own ways. Breath of The Wild felt more personal because you were there experiencing that horror underneath the beauty of a post-apocalyptic world. Most games, after the end of the world, aren’t this beautiful. But you get to slowly uncover the deaths and stories of your friends, you get to help NPCs grow and change, you can watch as slowly but surely your actions create a more peaceful world. Link is the embodiment of hope after tragedy, and that really isn’t the case with Tears of the Kingdom, a world that has already been saved.
31:50 to be fair about the meal prepping for the final fight, you can use the portable zonai cooking pots to get meals to prepare right before you fight ganondorf
I think the bigger issue is having played 100+ hours and not being aware of gloom resistant meals or armor or other buffs by that point. Like he said he learned about them after trying Ganondorf. Like the game throws this info in your face constantly, lines your pockets with sundelions, characters constantly talk about sundelions curing gloom, there are quests for it, random people in the world that give you rewards for helping cure them, people at lookout landing won’t stop talking about it, that one really rewarding side quest in kakariko. Enormous skill issue on that complaint.
@@TheLronGiantAgreed. Also, even the Sundelion description itself tells you about the gloom resistance! And that text box is going to be directly in your face the first time you find the material! It begs the question if Scott read even half of the stuff in the game or if he just has a terrible memory despite the constant reminders. 😅
I thought Ganondorf entirely removing your hearts instead of cracking them was awesome, i was so terrified thinking it might somehow be permanent and i'd have to recollect them
Yeah, by the time you're ready for the final boss, gloom damage means very little because you can cook stuff to replenish it. Removing hearts entirely brings back that sense of dread right in the face of the BBEG.
And it's during the phase which is introduced with Ganondorf demonstrating his power by EXTENDING HIS HEALTH BAR TO A HILARIOUS DEGREE. It was a blast watching some of my favorite UA-camrs have a double-take and realize that they're Ralph Wiggum "haha, i'm in danger" when you fight Matt Mercer, the Demon King of Darkness.
THE TENSION IT ADDED GOD IT REALLY ADDED SO MUCH FEAR AND MAKES YOU NOT WANT TO EITHER STAY OUT AND LEARN HIS MOVESET NOR GET TOO GREEDY AND LOOSE HEARTS
I was so excited when Zonai were confirmed in the game. I remember how much speculation was around the Zonai, spawning dozens of theories. And when we finally get a chance to have the Zonai fleshed out… they aren’t. There are Rauru and Mineru and we learn very little about what the Zonai were like from them. And now Nintendo said they don’t plan on making DLC so I guess the Zonai will go down as a forgotten species in the Zelda games, unless they’re brought back in future titles.
Yea, I mean that was my only other criticism of Tears. But sort of that's a back-handed compliment to how interesting the Lore is and the game's potential. No DLC was painful news. The only other I have is that it constantly overheats my Switch and chugs at 20fps!
@@yonkadingo3683 Have you properly played the game or just watching influencer videos? They literally play out scenes from Rauru's time and he gives Us some insight into how the Zonai set up their 'sources of light'. But of course, I already admitted We could have gotten much more and really should have time-travelled back into their world. Though, that would complicate and confuddle things a whole lot. Anyhow, I'm more of a 'Dungeons person' but still they could have done more here too.
@@yonkadingo3683 Watching (nearly) all of them gives Us a little (though I wouldn't say 'hardly any'.) But of course, We could and really should have gotten a lot more. The game could have also built a lot more on top of it, so yea I didn't deny that aspect.
The fact that they are called “secret stones” is one of my biggest annoyances with this game. What a stupid and generic name for something so powerful I love TOTK but I’m glad Scott put the story on blast. I heard so many people saying it was an improvement on BOTW’s story which baffles me. BOTW’s story was shallow and slightly “been there done that” but at least had some cool lore reveals and felt cohesive. TOTK’s story felt like a bad anime
Not excusing the bad name, but apparently it’s a direct translation from the japanese version. I do think a cooler-sounding localized name would have done wonders.
They really should have had the sages have prompts like the bird guy when you’re gliding e.g. shield up you can press the button to trigger the water shield, aiming with bow you can press a button for the lightning girls ability
20:59 This was one of my biggest gripes in the game and I’m so glad someone is finally bringing it up! Link is the main character, but he doesn’t have any character this time and just sits back as everyone else has the spotlight and I really don’t like it. The fact that this is the only game where he’s meant to explicitly be his own character to the point you can’t even name him this time, but then has less personality than almost all the other 3D Links that came before is mind-boggling! I was hoping we’d get to see more about him in this game since BotW didn’t deliver, but I guess not.
He has plenty of character but they're in the dialogue options with the NPCs who also treat him differently when he speaks to them naked or on an elevated surface like a table indoors. Cutscene wise no, I think he's meant to be as much of a self insert as possible
Reminds me of how I obtained all of the memories before fighting the phantom ganon in Hyrule Castle specifically because it's set up like it's the end of the game. So I knew Zelda was fake, had to deal with the fact that I was following a fake zelda, and watching the characters realize it when link doesn't say a damn thing about how zelda can "time travel."
It felt like the sky islands needed more connections to one another. Maybe have a system of rails that go between most of them. Anything to keep us in the air for longer than it takes to boil relish.
yeah, they're "islands" in the "sky" they're supposed to be isolated. it's an abandoned kingdom, that's why it's empty. They're all design choices. The very zonai devices u find littering the sky are used to traverse it.
My biggest criticism of the story comes from me finding all the tears before completing a single dungeon. That one action completely and entire killed the stakes for me. Your telling me that im supposed to go off to find Zelda? I already know where she is. Why does nobody acknowledge that link knows EXACTLY what happened to zelda. Even if they had it so if you completed the memories the focus shifted to gathering the difrent tribes to tey and save zeld, but no. Where is Zelda? Shes not herself anymore
you don't even have to find all the tears. just happening to get a few of the right ones early spoils all the plot twists, but you still have to sit through all the nonsense because link just refuses to tell anyone anything. getting the one that shows the fake zelda as my second tear and still having to listen to every npc go "why is zelda evil now!?!?!?" was absolutely madenning.
True dat, I guess that's what comes with the cost of freedom in deciding where to explore and what you want to do in a non-linear manner. Still, writing some alternative texts to at least acknowledge some events would keep some immersion to the story.
The thing is though, is even though you have those memories, there still is another 'Zelda' that you physically see wandering modern hyrule. Maybe Link is just as confused and trying to figure out what is going on, and finding this 'modern' Zelda is the key. Telling everyone else she died to become a giant dragon would just cause chaos in the kingdom.
Wait ,waittt hang on: this guy has 2MN _(2 million)_ Subscribers ,, is doing a video (a critique video no less) on a Zelda game - but as of 0:38 , he has _not_ even completed Ocarina of Time???? I genuinely hate how little there is to do in the sky islands. When the name "sky archipelago" was revealed my mouth hit the floor thinking theres gonna be so much up there its gonna be little pockets of world in the sky! Theyre just shrines but elevated 2000 feet. Same with the depths. We had absolutely no idea the depths were even a thing before release, so an entirely new map to explore? Yes please! All the easter eggs with the past weapons and armors? Good resources to stock up on? I wouldn’t necessarily call it shallow to be honest, but I can see where you’re coming from
I think my biggest problem with the story in TOTK is how the story already happened, and there's very little that Link himself actually does in it despite Zelda saying he is the one who will save everyone. All Link does in Totk is talk to people, kill a few monsters, and then take out Ganon, and it doesn't feel like he actually had an impact on the world. In Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker, Link has more responsibility and actually affects the course of the story and the lives of the people in the world. I think MM and TP did that part the best. In Botw, the fact that the story happened in the past was actually pretty cool because you could see the results of the Calamity on Hyrule. Many places are decimated, and you see the people slowly picking up the pieces and moving on, which helped drive home one of Botw's main themes: Moving forward and creating something new. The world in Totk doesn't have that same satisfying demonstration of cause-and-effect. Outside of the 4 major quests, the world feels more or less indifferent about what has happened, if they are even aware in the first place.
This, but for ganondorf. Quite possibly his coolest design is wasted as he does literally nothing until the final battle. You get to see him in visions doing extremely devastating shit to the world with the tear that he still possesses as he sits underground, but open story and non linearity has been prioritized once again in a story where it didn’t even really belong this time.
@@Thequotequotequoteq Imagine if what Ganondorf does in the memories instead happened in the present, when going up against Link? How amazing would the story of Totk be if there was zero time travel, if some variation of it all happened as you progressed through the game? What we got was: Ganondorf fucks off at the beginning of the game and you don't see him again until the end of the game. The meat of the story happens in the past, with no influence on the world except "exposition dump"
I’m sorry but the world being indifferent to the upheaval and Link’s actions is entirely wrong and you must simply be misremembering the game. Ofc there are the obvious main 4 quests but outside of that the great fairies are disturbed and you have to rebuild a musical troupe in order to bring them back out. The korok forest is entirely zombified all the way down into the depths which you help heal. Pirates have taken over eventide and lurelin, the latter which you help physically rebuild which is rewarded with the villagers gratitude and special treatment. You help a group of warriors led by Hoz to take out large monster camps to bring peace to hyrule. All of the stable quests involve helping the locals and finding clues about Zelda’s whereabouts and actions, and it’s a nice mix up of the misdoings of puppet Zelda and the kind acts of the real Zelda aiding the people. You help with local town politics, the school, and the garden in Hateno village. You help Mattison and her parents during the buildup to her departure to Gerudo town which leads to one of the most heartfelt moments in the series. This is all off the top of my head there were plenty more like it throughout the game. Plenty of things to dislike ToTK for but I don’t think the world being indifferent is one of those reasons, it’s arguably one of the game’s best aspects.
My major complaint about Tears of the Kingdom is how 99% of all NPCs you've encountered in Breath of the Wild don't even remember Link, or Link doesn't even remember details that he already learned.
@@Lion-dg5zn And many NPCs do. You're forgetting, the people of Hyrule don't have internet or cameras to remember faces. If you were given a $300 tip by a customer as a waiter in a restaurant, would you remember their face after 5-7 years?
It is always wild to me how creative your jokes are all for what is often a 1 second payoff. Having the guy say he's going to come to Ohio and then cut to you erasing Ohio from the map is just too clever/funny.
Although the depths are not Auto-Generated, they weren't uniquely designed, all the terrain is just an inverse version of the surface. All the hills on the surface are valleys in the depths and vice versa, Even the lightroots are in the same places as the shrines from the surface. This is what gives the feeling of them being 'auto-generated'. Because the surface map was not designed with being flipped in mind, the depths feel weird to traverse and do not follow many game design principles. I personally find this harshness to fit the theming of the depths well, but I understand why they feel auto-generated.
I like how this reversal of the surface is sort of how the depths works thematically. Even the Lightroot names are the reverse of their respective Shrine names
I'm not sure if it actually saves them any space for storing the world mesh because there's enough differences with weird roots going places and different structures and stuff
FYI, you don't need to open the main menu to fuse items, you can do it from quick menus just like with arrows. It doesn't fix your item rolling away issue though, since it still drops the item on the ground.
They really should have made the geoglyph memories unlock after you get all the allies. It was literally the first thing I did after the tutorial island and the story suffered.
Me 2 I did all memories just by chance easy to find story fell apart its better but been way better if link didn't know everything but everyone is still duh what is zelda doing that whole castle part would been perfect if I didn't know 😅
Or they should have done what they were close to doing, making the story play out in real time. The parts of the story I enjoyed the most were when I was helping save people and have actual plot happen, not memories.
@Sir_Adam yeah that be great I was kind of hoping it be like major mask story all them side quest events stuff just happing I wanna go Here see a story events plot even if it isn't connected to save zelds would made the 4 temples better instead of what is zelda doing or at least change it if you know or something
Whenever people mention how great Raruu and Sonia are I just have to give ‘em a funky stare because I too did the same as you alongside doing the main sidequest of every town AND getting all towers before main plot. And after all that, yeah the story felt VERY bland! Everything after the Dragon Tears just felt like afterthoughts or a retelling which sucked.
in both botw and totk the first thing I did was collect the memories because I'm a sucker for narrative... issue with doing this in totk though... you spend the rest of the game being constantly asked what happened to Zelda.. when you know exactly what happened and you were even just with her, but nothing is ever said and that quest doesn't complete till the end of the game. drove me absolutely nuts....
What I found annoying is that the tear number doesn’t coincide with the cutscene number. So tear #2 could be cutscene #6. And even when you _do_ follow the path the game pushes you towards (I think Wind > Fire > Lightning > Water dungeons), the tears along that trek still are random. You’d have to find a guide that actually tells you which tear is which cutscene to figure out what order it is to unlock them chronologically. But you’re not gonna do that on your first time and risk spoiling the story or other aspects, so you just experience a mess. I didn’t find cutscene #1 until over 200 hours in. I thought it was done that way because it was some huge revelation to the story. Not really. You’re told you can both repair the Master Sword and strengthen it further. But given Ganon broke it already, something obviously had to give to win. And it’s not like knowing this beforehand would’ve ruined the surprise of Zelda becoming a dragon. That was already foreshadowed multiple times. I mean, when it was first mentioned to Zelda she didn’t even reject it as an option, and then turn around later. She never dismissed it as an option, just other people. So in the same scene it was mentioned it her lack of negative reaction basically foreshadowed “she’s obviously going to do it later”.
Yes from Link’s perspective you saw what happened to Zelda. But again from Link’s perspective it is kinda unbelievable. You saw Zelda turning a Dragon but is it really truth. Maybe Zelda he was seeing in Hyrule were real one but memories were fake?
The problem too is that even if you are very story driven and go memory hunting immediately in botw, the game forces you to space it out with gameplay as you need to explore in order to find any of the landmarks in the pictures. And as exploration is the core of the game, you get a seamless and well-paced blend of story progression and game progression-explore a new area, find a new memory; it works. But with totk, instead you get these massive geoglyphs that are just impossible to ignore, you can EASILY find most of them within the first few hours. And because people are like “oh look a shiny interesting thing that stands out golly” they’ll speed through the story in the first 10% of their total playtime which just feels…clunky from a pacing perspective alone. From a story perspective, it’s just…terrible for all the reasons y’all already said.
It hits exactly the same bullet points as BotW but fucks up every step of the way. - The cutscenes related to the old Champions were replaced with the same cutscene 5 times. This leads to not a single character having any significant screentime, except maybe Sidon. - The memories don't nearly work as well fragmented as the memories in BotW - Spoiling elements of the story by finding and doing stuff in specific unintended orders is a much bigger problem than in BotW
@@nhbons783 He uses it when he throws up text on the screen saying something like "3 minutes later" as a transition. Like, you know how Spongebob does that and the French narrator reads it? Scott does it with the Thomas the Tank Engine theme instead.
Biggest gripe is 100% the spirit companions. Like why is it all the same button? They were the jankiest thing in the game imo. A lot of the other complaints were fine for me because I found ways around them, but the spirits were so sad in practice.
I'm glad the honeymoon phase for ToTK was a lot shorter than BotW was. I see a lot more people being openly critical now of this game's flaws, which is nice to see. My personal hope for this game was having more varied interiors and traditional dungeons to just find when exploring the overworld instead of shrines, and my wish was sort of half granted with the inclusion of caves and actual temples, but I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I got to Akkala Citadel and all I saw to explore was a piddly little cave.
This just in: "Scott is publicly crucified by rabid Zelda fans, moderate and reasonable Zelda fans saw it coming from a mile away anyways but simply stood to admire the show"
One of my biggest disappointments is that the entire world is full of nothing but ruins and shanty towns still despite nearly 10 years having passed since BoTW. Reminded me of Fallout 3 again and people living with skeletons and 200 year old trash.
Thing that bothered me with the story is they emphasized turning into a dragon is irreversible. So I thought there would be some actual consequences this time. But suddenly that didn't apply to Zelda. The only half assed explanation was the light and time power channeled through Link or some sh!t, and Zelda just accepts it without any follow up question.
@@jamesmccloud1002 I wouldn't mind if there was some good story reason why she was able to change back. But the reason here was basically, "magic, I think".
Right! Like, it would have been fine if they explained that turning her back was possible or there was a way to revert the process during cutscenes - since the story's theme is about "sacrifice" I guess, hell Link could have even sacrificed his life to bring Zelda back. Give us something Nintendo. Not this deus ex machina "friendship is magic" tomfoolery. Why would you build it up as to turning into a dragon is permanent, that's why it's forbidden, and then just have it fall flat to "oh okay the stones magic did it" what? Y'all couldn't fend off Ganondorf but you can turn dragons back into people? This story was so bad😭😭😭😭😫😫😫😫 thanks, I hate it Nintendo
@@ValorDuckyIf this was an older Zelda game, you'd go around helping each tribe. You'd get the Master Sword at the midway point. Once you learn the secret, the 2nd story arc would've been to research how the heck to reverse the process (you know, this is modern day, we have access to new info that the Zonai didn't. We're willing to try stuff). Then it would've worked. But the stucture ruins any semblance of the story they have. Link doesn't even get to meet Sonia.
This is probably the closest to "full agreement" I can get with my own opinions of this game. I was also happy to see Scott appreciates the functionality and overall effectiveness of BotW's story, as I often find myself explaining why I think it's so good for what it is to others. It feels good to know I'm not completely alone! Though I have to say, the death threats Scott gets are way funnier than the ones I get. That dental records one? Golden.
Same for me except the part at the end, this is nowhere near greatest game of all time. Botw was amazing, probably my 2nd favorite game I've ever played, but tears was just meh. It feels like the same map, same enemies, same characters, same story structure (but done worse), with some "big" additions like the sky islands and depths that are really just empty. The abilities are one of the only redeeming factors of the game but don't make up for all the other bad stuff. I still play it for the same reason I kept playing botw, to explore the world, discover places I haven't seen before, do random quests, and this is the only time besides the beginning I've rally enjoyed it, even though I could basically do the same things in botw. This game should have been better.
@@IceYetiWins I enjoyed BotW more too. To be clear, I do think TotK is amazing in its scope, and there's a lot to like about it. But I think the thing I agree with the most with Scott's video is the "clunk" part. In BotW, the exploration felt a lot smoother and more natural, to me at least. In TotK, the main thing is that I honestly get tired of piecing things together constantly. I get that Ultrahand is amazing, but it really feels like it slows the game down in some ways. It just isn't for me, even though it's an amazing feature.

You really hit the nail on the head on how similarly structured this game is to BOTW. It’s especially crazy to me that no one else critiques how the 4 sage story cutscenes are the exact same, why did it need to be this way?? People only accept it bc it’s Zelda
@@amandaslough125 The idea that people accepted it because it was Zelda is still wrong though. It was dumb and they thought it was dumb. I don’t see enough people talking about the problems with the Great Sky Island. As a tutorial it’s pretty good, but it really suffers when you try and do stuff it doesn’t expect you to do. On my first play through, I was constantly walking off the beaten path. The problem was, often there was no way to get back, the island is one way for some reason. I must have looped around the whole island at least three or four times before I finally escaped it.
Same. I picked up the game a bit later than day one, so I only have about 5 or 6 hours. And I'm still stuck on the Great Sky Island just dying to escape it and never come back, lol.
I don't see it as much as a problem because the new powers are INCREDIBLY dense. Like they really want you to make sure you got a grasp on them before they open the entire game up to you so I get it. I never saw it as a problem especially since I definitely didn't traverse the Great Sky Island as intended
Yeah, I’ve seen some people call it a great tutorial, but I’m not sure why. It totally ditched everything that made BotW’s tutorial great, and it’s length made me want to stop playing.
They also inadvertently teach you when in doubt build a plane. Oh I have to get this crystal across a large gap and there's a bunch of springs nearby. I could do what the game intends and catapult it, or I could pull out a glider 2 fans a steering stick and a cart and just fly it over.
Tbf the new abilities are far more complex and deep, making an insanely open area wouldn’t make you learn the abilities which will affect your whole experience
Unironically, I fully agree they're the best food in the game with how easy you get them, and how many hearts they heal in dishes compared to apples/other easy fruits.
I actually didnt know you could get the memories out of order because it never occured to me to try that. I saw the order of memoreis on the walls of the temple and if i walked passed a hyrogliph and wasnt the next one up, I'd ignore it. That is stupid. I imagine watching them out of order and it would kinda ruin the whole thing.
This is because the game is offering a lot of linearity in the beginning quest sections. The game can still be done in a myriad of ways and you can take whatever path you want, but if you want story in particular then the game gives advice and pin points you towards certain areas to do first. This is also why the game suggests you do Rito village first a lot as on your way to Rito village is the quest that "officially" starts your hunt for the dragon tears which would then lead you to the chamber that had all of those tears in order.
The tears actually let you spoil the story for yourself for hours, for some reason. You learn what happened to Zelda and then proceed to watch everyone else not get it.
It doesn't ruin the whole thing. It's about piecing it together after having seen all of it. That's a whole theme of these games. To put it in perspective, I got the one you're supposed to get second, last. The one where Zelda is reminiscing about how much she fancies Link. It was just as impactful and made me cry.
@@lukeshioshio nah man if I got Sonia's death first, I wouldn't give a shit. The story worked for me but I think only because I got it in chronological order. They need to stop being so stubborn about this new way of telling a story that they like so much and just make it linear next time. I get options are good but I don't understand the point of giving the option to make the story worse.
I think the reason I like TOTK's story more than BOTW is that the threat you're up against this time feels more....well, threatening. Calamity Ganon in the first game is certainly intended to be a huge world-ending threat, but the regional problems it caused felt more like mere nuisances half the time. In TOTK, all of the regions are really struggling with all the shit caused by the upheaval, and because of that I felt more invested in what was going on despite some of the story's quirks (like explaining the Imprisoning War in the same way 4 times, which I will agree is pretty silly). I even enjoyed the memories more in TOTK because, as silly of a reason as this might sound, Zelda's actually holding conversations with others most of the time. She technically is talking to Link in BOTW's memories, but Link barely ever reacts to anything she says in a noticeable way, so it felt like she was effectively monologuing to herself. In short, I don't believe that the ideas brought forth in TOTK's story are any more interesting than BOTW's, I just think that the stakes here feel as high as they were meant to be this time around.
You summed up my thoughts on the story too my favorite parts are when ruaru imprisoned ganondorf and when you know who turned into a you know what also the part where ruara says link is tye last li e of defense is peak
To me the best thing about Tears of the Kingdom's story (aside from the big twist and the events surrounding it) is how it has you interact with the communities of Hyrule so much more than any other game could dream of. It no longer feels like Link fighting for Hyrule with some help from its people; it feels like Link fighting alongside Hyrule's people. Breath of the Wild felt like it was trying to do something like this by having someone help you enter every Divine Beast, but now they just go all the way and have them not only join you in the Temples, but fight Ganondorf alongside you. I also love how in Lookout Landing and various camps, they make a point to show that everyone there has their own role and they're contributing to the conflict in any way they can.
@@speedude0164 That's a good point. I just played Twilight Princess for the first time recently (which I liked a lot overall), and that game has a group of mercenaries that were trying to restore Hyrule alongside you, but their effect on the story is rather superfluous and mostly limited to pointing you in the direction of the next dungeon. In stark contrast to that, I really got the vibe that all of Hyrule's people were pitching in to help in Tears of the Kingdom, even if they weren't directly helping the player in any way. In Breath of the Wild, the various regions and their people felt rather separate from each other for the most part - likely because the kingdom had been in disarray for so long - so it was nice to see everyone banding together against the Demon King's forces to show that they've gotten past the wounds of the Great Calamity.
When I first played TotK, I was very overwhelmed with the size of the game. The first time I went into the depths and saw the map after getting the first lightroot, I was actually mad that there was an entire new map the size of the Hyrule that was completely covered in darkness. I think this was because it took me way too long to realize that you could upgrade your energy cells with zonite so I thought there was no actual point to going into the depths other than just to explore a new area.
I don’t even know how to upgrade my Energy cells since it has been so long past the point of when they did tell me(if they did)or didn’t tell me. I got like 167 Zonite just sitting there.
For fusing items to weapons: you can press x on the quick item select screen (dpad up) to drop anything you want. It is much easier than selecting it from the menu.
I genuinely expected Ganondorf to proactively _do something_ after gathering all the sages, because after playing BotW several times I'd gotten quite good at the game and cleared out the four temples rather quickly. I expected the second half of the game to open up and for the depths and sky to become significant, since they each had one major point of interest. Instead, much like this post, it was just suddenly over.
12:01 fun fact, they had the solution to this in BOTW with the abilities you got from completing divine beasts. Last time I played BOTW I used Ravioli's power a LOT
@RandomDude647 It incentives you to use other things, like a spring, rocket, cooking potions, ascend, etc. As Ratotsker said, "If I ever have to climb for a longer period of time in TotK, I have failed at the game."
The fuse UI is actually insane, I don’t know how it met Nintendo’s standards when they were doing play testing for game feel. I like that you have to craft things in real-time, but a real-time crafting menu that you had to navigate during gameplay would have accomplished the same goals, and would have made it infinitely quicker and more efficient to make weapons and shields. And arrows, my god, this was the dumbest implementation they could have thought of. Why can’t I just craft arrows in anticipation of a fight like I do with my weapons and shields? Maybe then you could have a limited number of different fused-arrow slots that you could upgrade using Korok seeds. Or hell, just the ability to pin five or six materials instead of having to have it be sorted by “Most Used” would have made me feel way more in control of my experience. I love the idea of the fuse mechanic, but it’s implementation is just needlessly cumbersome.
Even if it doesn't seem like my audition got in, I'm glad I could contribute to the "Scott the Woz shouldn't have opinions" community. I'm so glad to have been apart of it.
Totally agree with Scott's take on the story of Tears of the Kingdom. There's a painfully apparent drop in the writing quality between 2017 and 2023. When people say that the story in Tears of the Kingdom is better than in Breath of the Wild, it makes me skeptical of everything else they say about the game because I begin to assume recency bias is swaying their opinion.
Tears of the Kingdom was marketed as if it was gonna fold the old Zelda timeline into the switch era games. It actually decanonized most of them and even contradicted botw.
I was really hoping that the story would keep me coming back for more in TotK but honestly it was just as frustrating as the rest of the game was for me. Not only does it seem shallow and has a lackadaisical plot but Zelda kinda just let everything happen. She went down deep in the chasms of Hyrule castle, saw murals of the past, took pictures, physically saw the mummified corpse who even mentioned Rauru's name, and when she gets transported back to the past and she doesn't say anything to the people who hold a resemblance to said murals? She can't put two and two together that Ganondorf is responsible for the Calamity? Especially when she sealed Calamity GANON for 100 years! I was so mad that when Sonia got killed then she wanted to warn Rauru? Umm too late for that pointdexter. I just... it blows my mind and I'm even more astonished that people are like not even aware of this and still claim the story is better in TotK. I'm not a huge fan of BotW's story but, at least it tried to make sense of what happened and the theme of moving forward and be open to change, accepting your failures yada yada. I don't know what TotK was trying to do...
I like totks story better and zelda is kinda dumb but even if she warned them what was gonna happen things could've gone different Example ganodorf fials to kill soina then finds out about the other 4 stones could you imagine Ganondorf with 4 stones there's no stopping him Also sage abilities are hard to use but the are pretty funny when you and the sages are beating the rap out of 1 enemy Also zelda kind of made up for stripey by essentially committing suicide by doing dragconifaction BTW botw and totk are my top two games Botw 2 And Totk 1 I like totks mechanics better than breath of the wild s and the armor sets are cooler in my opinion oh and the Cillian is cool as heck but to be fair the game does not have a motorcycle so botw will always have that over totk oh forgot to mention cogara may be a easy boss but the muiscic fire and I think that's a universally agreed opinion I just can't stop finding things in totk to do hell I didn't even start to upgrade my armor until 430ish hours in Also I kinda agree about the great Plato being a better starting area especially in master mode where there's a lynel botw does do alot better but in .y opinion totk is better overall and your completely allowed to disagree
Typically from what I've seen, it's a good amount of Zelink lshippers who are very overtly emotional at the sight of Zelda and Link actually interacting so much. I've not seen a single person who doesn't ship them that thinks this story was great and "emotional"
I describe this feeling to my friends thusly: If you told me I had to play Tears of the Kingdom I'm sure I would enjoy the game again. If you told me I had to play Breath of the Wild I would be excited.
Absolutely. BotW just tied everything together way better while also keeping pretty much everything optional. TotK makes a big deal out of everything but barely makes these things satisfying as there is most of the time an underwhelming or annoying element to it.
The menu's are DEFINITELY the issue I agree with you on. Sure, over time you learned to sort by "most used" but even then that feels like a boring solution when the games charm is making you EXPERIMENT.
...I didn't know you couldn't leave the approach to Ganondorf, but I should have realized this. I noticed that I wasn't able to put down a travel medallion. Luckily I was over-prepared, but still. My main complaint about TOTK honestly is how useless the sages are in both gameplay and story. They were great in their respective temples, but outside of that? Maybe if their abilities were on the rune wheel, but it just wasn't worth it for me to walk to up most of them to do a small attack. Tulin is the main exception as he's a fantastic mobility tool. Sidon is a special case in that he's useful for the Zora spear, and...that's it. If I want explosions, I have bomb flowers. If I want a lightning blast, I have shock fruit and yellow chu chu jelly. If I want to slowly walk around and use Zonai devices? I don't, but I could fuse them to my shield. And then the sages' powers are just...unavailable during the finale at all. Their avatars disappear, and while they do show up to help take out some trash mobs and distract the temple bosses...that's basically it? First phase Ganondorf they're not there, second phase they're only there for part of it and then they get knocked the fuck out for the rest of the finale. So....what did they do? Why did Link need their help?
34:44 An uncensored "fuck" to compliment the video. Makes this video even more special. Oh and I guess the video was just legitimately good too but who cares about that when we can hear fuck
I hate how nobody is talking about where the actual hell the divine beasts went, this game doesnt recall them once besides the exclusive amiibo helms but besides that this game feels like the last games story never existed besides defeating ganon
You can use the up arrow menu to fuse things for melee weapons btw, just press x to drop it from that menu Still kinda clunky but better than what was described
I always found it to be faster to just go in the menu and drop it from there, since you I had more of a feel where everything is, AND could view more objects at the same time. It's just two or three button presses more, but it saved me a lot of time in the long run. The quick slot menu is atrocious, particularly because it has a slight but meaningful input delay that's not present in the actual menu.
I unironically adore comments like this as sources of situational comedy, when you start scrolling and realize everyone is in agreement with Scott. Like those tumblr posts that start with "nobody cares about this but..." and have tens of thousands of notes. Or those reddit posts like "everyone will downvote me but..." and get thousands of upvotes
22:01 I think Link's characterization works best when he has the same mindset as the player at the time. As seen in Scett's example, when Link about to storm the Forsaken Fortress for the first time and is waiting for Tetra's countdown to finish, the expressions on his face reflect the inner emotions of the player at the time as both mentally prepare for the fight ahead. Link in Wind Waker outwardly expresses what he's thinking in a way that not only makes him more of a character, but is more relatable to human emotion. On the other hand, BoTW and ToTK don't have this same connection (imo). Also mentioned by Scart, Link is stone-faced 99% of the time - in the games where he could (and should) be expressing the most emotion he ever has in the series so far. I will say there are moments of personality that shine through like whenever Link cooks or when doing selfie poses, but the cooking cutscene gets boring very quickly and the selfie poses aren't very natural. My issue is in the two games where he's supposed to be more than a glorified stand-in character, Link makes for the perfect stand-in for the player. We have more control than ever before as pick out our favorite gear and choose what dialogue to respond with as we make our own journey across Hyrule, and while it makes for rewarding gameplay, I find it hard to justify my mindset of exploring everything when Link is supposed to be saving Zelda - which breaks the immersion just enough to make the tedious parts of ToTK feel much more laborious than before. That or I'm sick of looking for these stupid Acorn guys all over the place.
20:57 THANK YOU. FINALLY someone mentions how Link feels like a blank slate of a character in this game. ToTK felt like it didn’t do much with his character compared to Botw, which feels weird cuz he feels even more expressionless in this game
@@jameslawrenson1208 How? In botw he wakes up, does a bunch of shit and saves the world in what, maybe a month or few months. Then after that he spends at least the next 5 years living with Zelda, traveling the world, rebuilding hyrule, all in total peace. And yet all they can do with his character is steel his resolve more?
This game lives off Ocarina of Time nostalgia. But at the end of the day, if they remastered Ocarina of Time with new gameplay and expanded environments, it would blow this game away
I still remember in that early game phase of discovering and exploring the depths its generic nature reminded me a lot of mineraft's nether with the stronger (as in gloom) enemies, better loot, reoccuring but rare structures and sense of mystery. Emotionally accepting that the depths were quite shallow thus made stuff like the Kohga questline or discovering the construct factory and spirit temple before the story made you go there more enjoyable.
Yup, this pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly. A lot people got real huffy whenever anyone would call TotK "an expansion" but from my perspective that's exactly what it is. It doesn't mean its bad, but its not its own thing. Its intrinsicly tied to BotW which is just not the case for pretty much any other Zelda. Even Majora's Mask which is also a direct sequel

Otherwise no one would buy it for… $70!
That's just straight-up a lie but ok
@@lilaclunablossom it’s not a lie, have you seen the map of the sky islands? That and building a car was the only thing they could show in the trailers. Why are you simping so hard for a first party Nintendo game
I was worried about that too. Seeing how Skyward sword didn't quite get the mark with that, I was skeptical on how they would handle sky islands with a bigger map. And turns out they still struggled in that area. Nintendo at times has the right idea for things but has poor execution
That is genuinely unfactual but alright lol.
The number one thing that threw me off in Tears of The Kingdom is how all of the sheikah technology was just completely missing with no explanation as to why. It just made it seem so disconnected from BOTW

@@charliez077 fair. As someone who lit the entire depths I relate
It's pretty useful for stocking up on bombs.
Completely agree! It's such a great fake out
"getting you to fix your posture" is such a good way to put it, and I can't believe I've never heard that phrase before
That fight was the perfect example of that meme of that guy sitting straight up on his chair, it's exactly what I did once I saw that my HP loss was essentially permanent in the fight.
too bad its still easy
On top of that stuff, another bit that hit me was when fucking up like 3 parries was enough to get the "Hylian Shield is heavily damaged" notice. That is one hell of a way to give a Zelda veteran an "oh shit" face.
Would have loved a town in the sky where the robots sell and have some more side quests.
I wish the sky had more content in general
I wish the sky had more weight in the story. Prologue and two temples was the entire content. After that, we only have grinding points or shortcuts.
The cover sell us a story about the sky but the most important part of the game is underground
@@Danielgil28893-x Agreed, I did partake in all shrines, and lightroots, and while the Underground was the best place to mass collect pristine weapons, Amiibo items (assuming players don't own Zelda franchise Amiibo), and a ton of Zonaite for crystallized charges leading to more batteries, there's so much emptiness that you could almost write an elegy
joking aside, the Depths being an inverted layout of the surface is really cool, its flora is really creative, and it leaves to imagination how much the Zonai used to thrive down there... although they could have done a tiny bit of a Skyward Sword moment by showing us how lively the depths were and gathering exclusive items that way

Fun fact. If you don't do any of the dungeons prior to fighting Gannon, you have to fight harder versions of every boss in the game before you can fight Gannon. That includes the horde of enemies which you now have to deal with yourself.
This happened in the first game as well, but I think it's more overt there because of the fact they also flat-out took chunks out of Ganons health bar
Banned.

Yeah, by the time you're ready for the final boss, gloom damage means very little because you can cook stuff to replenish it. Removing hearts entirely brings back that sense of dread right in the face of the BBEG.

@@netweed09 Its not a backhanded compliment. There’s is no lore behind the Zonai because we are hardly given any.
@@yonkadingo3683 Have you properly played the game or just watching influencer videos? I love TOTK but I’m glad Scott put the story on blast. I heard so many people saying it was an improvement on BOTW’s story which baffles me. BOTW’s story was shallow and slightly “been there done that” but at least had some cool lore reveals and felt cohesive.

It’s so strange since AoC *did* give him a lot of character.
He has plenty of character but they're in the dialogue options with the NPCs who also treat him differently when he speaks to them naked or on an elevated surface like a table indoors.

I did the same thing
Extremely poor bit of writing, can't believe they didn't consider how jarring it would be
you don't even have to find all the tears. just happening to get a few of the right ones early spoils all the plot twists, but you still have to sit through all the nonsense because link just refuses to tell anyone anything. getting the one that shows the fake zelda as my second tear and still having to listen to every npc go "why is zelda evil now!?!?!?" was absolutely madenning.

Have you...played BOTW? The story is literally 90% done by the time you get to play
@@lucalamanna-vg2bz Did you... finish reading my comment? I addressed why I think it works in Botw and not Totk.
@@Thequotequotequoteq
Imagine if what Ganondorf does in the memories instead happened in the present, when going up against Link?
Majora's Mask is an example what a sequel should do. The structure is completely different than Oot.

Even the Lightroot names are the reverse of their respective Shrine names

in both botw and totk the first thing I did was collect the memories because I'm a sucker for narrative... issue with doing this in totk though... you spend the rest of the game being constantly asked what happened to Zelda.. when you know exactly what happened and you were even just with her, but nothing is ever said and that quest doesn't complete till the end of the game. drove me absolutely nuts....
- The memories don't nearly work as well fragmented as the memories in BotW
- Spoiling elements of the story by finding and doing stuff in specific unintended orders is a much bigger problem than in BotW

I'm glad the honeymoon phase for ToTK was a lot shorter than BotW was. I see a lot more people being openly critical now of this game's flaws, which is nice to see. Right! Same for me except the part at the end, this is nowhere near greatest game of all time. Botw was amazing, probably my 2nd favorite game I've ever played, but tears was just meh. @@IceYetiWins I enjoyed BotW more too. To be clear, I do think TotK is amazing in its scope, and there's a lot to like about it.

I actually agree with the slow intro, I was so grateful when I was able to leave the place. I also agree with the clunkiness of the new abilities.
10:33 I genuinely wonder how many takes this took without ANYONE in the room laughing
Bruh
I don’t even know how to upgrade my Energy cells since it has been so long past the point of when they did tell me(if they did)or didn’t tell me.
I got like 167 Zonite just sitting there.

For fusing items to weapons: you can press x on the quick item select screen (dpad up) to drop anything you want. It is much easier than selecting it from the menu.
Thanks, I was about to say this
Plus when you can sort the quick menu materials by attack power meaning you can make the strongest weapons on the fly in seconds.
It takes the same amount of time
24:07 IS THAT SHAFFIRILAS?!?!
That opening gag about Scott's halloween costume was--*chef's kiss--perfect.
You need higher standards
12:01 fun fact, they had the solution to this in BOTW with the abilities you got from completing divine beasts. Last time I played BOTW I used Ravioli's power a LOT

If you get the full froggy outfit and upgrade it you become "slip proof." You can literally walk up walls without climbing it's fucking insane
Poppycock!
It shouldn't take that long to get rid of slipping. In fact, why is slipping even a mechanic? How does it, in any way, make the game more enjoyable?
@RandomDude647 It incentives you to use other things, like a spring, rocket, cooking potions, ascend, etc. As Ratotsker said, "If I ever have to climb for a longer period of time in TotK, I have failed at the game."
Wait. Walk?
Ah yes, the armor that you only will get after doing basically everything in the game, how useful
I like fuse but honestly yeah, a simple crafting system would have gone a lot further.
and they did it again in Echoes of Wisdom!!
Even if it doesn't seem like my audition got in, I'm glad I could contribute to the "Scott the Woz shouldn't have opinions" community. I'm so glad to have been apart of it.

I can't believe Scott hates Breath of the Wild came back! Such a classic! ❤
Hhhmmm!! I wonder why 🤔
You criticism.
"Oh my god a frog!"

Totally my favorite part of this video
I think the side quest chains make the world feel more lived in
I like totks story better and zelda is kinda dumb but even if she warned them what was gonna happen things could've gone different
Example ganodorf fials to kill soina then finds out about the other 4 stones could you imagine
Ganondorf with 4 stones there's no stopping him
Also sage abilities are hard to use but the are pretty funny when you and the sages are beating the rap out of 1 enemy
Also zelda kind of made up for stripey by essentially committing suicide by doing dragconifaction
BTW botw and totk are my top two games
Botw 2
And
Totk 1
I like totks mechanics better than breath of the wild s and the armor sets are cooler in my opinion oh and the Cillian is cool as heck but to be fair the game does not have a motorcycle so botw will always have that over totk oh forgot to mention cogara may be a easy boss but the muiscic fire and I think that's a universally agreed opinion I just can't stop finding things in totk to do hell I didn't even start to upgrade my armor until 430ish hours in Also I kinda agree about the great Plato being a better starting area especially in master mode where there's a lynel botw does do alot better but in .y opinion totk is better overall and your completely allowed to disagree
@@stammesbruderWhere were you guys when TOTK fans attacked anyone that dare say anything negative about it? That dare say it isn't 10/10
The menu's are DEFINITELY the issue I agree with you on. Sure, over time you learned to sort by "most used" but even then that feels like a boring solution when the games charm is making you EXPERIMENT.
Pro tip: you can move items up on the "most used" scale by dropping it and picking it up a bunch of times.
23:39 SCHAFF MADE A CAMEO
...I didn't know you couldn't leave the approach to Ganondorf, but I should have realized this.
@@jNabe OK, not useless. Niche, then.

If I had a dime every time I heard a reviewer say “it’s not perfect” and or “Is it perfect? No”
I’d be on the run by the government
Same for when reviews say "It's a step in the right direction.",
typically for multiple games in a row.
if we can't critique the things we love than we don't really love them
You can use the up arrow menu to fuse things for melee weapons btw, just press x to drop it from that menu
Still kinda clunky but better than what was described
I always found it to be faster to just go in the menu and drop it from there, since you I had more of a feel where everything is, AND could view more objects at the same time. It's just two or three button presses more, but it saved me a lot of time in the long run. The quick slot menu is atrocious, particularly because it has a slight but meaningful input delay that's not present in the actual menu.
It is wild how angry people choose to get when you criticize something they love uncritically
It's even more wild how people bitch about things and label it "criticism"

I would have liked to have almost the whole game take place on sky islands, like a windwaker/skyward sword combo
This made my blood pressure rise so much I went into cardiac arrest. Another banger, can't wait until the next video.
20:57 THANK YOU. FINALLY someone mentions how Link feels like a blank slate of a character in this game. ToTK felt like it didn’t do much with his character compared to Botw, which feels weird cuz he feels even more expressionless in this game
To be fair. After what he goes through in Breath of the Wild, there's not much they can do with his character other than steel his resolve even more.

I love that Scott's videos always get better and better.
I love ToTK but I felt a lot more overwhelmed exploring and using the mechanics than I ever did in Breath of the Wild

True
For me, the problem was that botw was so enjoyable because it felt so new and fresh. Totk reused too much of botw to get close to that feeling
And for Nintendo to have taken 5+ years to develop it, plus slapping a $70 price tag on it, frankly the amount of "new" content was underwhelming.
Thank you!
