Hi Shawn, I'm a long time follower and want to thank you for your insights on the grip. After watching your instruction videos I made some adjustments and have seen a significant improvement in my ball striking. This is very surprising, the impact in changing the grip so it emulates using a hammer to drive a nail made all the sense in-the-world to me. I adjusted my grip to a stronger (but not super strong) setting and WOW, what a difference. Not only am I striking the ball with more power but it's with at more relaxed swing (slower) and is going straighter more often. Thank you for your wisdom!
Great video. Gripped down an inch on my driver the other day on the range and it made a world of difference... just felt more like a balanced extension of my arm.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! This is great information! I always thought that gripping down on a club would give me better accuracy but less yardage. This does raise the question of why manufacturers have a stock length on the driver longer than the pros. Gripping down on the club reduces the spin! This is great to know!
Today, at the age of 79, I went to the driving range and started re-learning how to play golf. I was always a long ball hitter, but not that accurate, and over time, I've gotten worst. Today, by using 3 of your golf instructions, I am now hitting the ball consistently, straighter, further and with less effort. Your instruction video on the swing using a grass cutter and the ball on a string, helped me to swing through the ball and not at the ball, thereby creating the maximum speed after the ball contact. I've always had the distance, but my slice was atrocious leading to many of lost balls. Your instruction video on "why you slice the driver" showed me that when I thought my club face was square to the ball, it was no longer square, when I was hitting up on the ball. You showed me how to close the face, which then put the club face square on contact with the ball, and straightened my ball flight. Now this video just confirmed another change that I made, on my own. I gripped down an inch a half from my normal grip, which made me feel more comfortable and more in control of the club. As I am hitting my driver over 250 yards, I'll wait awhile before I try adding more swing speed. Thank you! I now enjoy the game of golf, more than I ever have.
Fantastic post here; thank you so much for taking the time to write it out! This is exactly my intentions for how students learn on the way and get precious AHA moments that lead to finding a consistent feel into a consistent direction of flight. Be proud of this accomplishment sir, you rock!! 👍👌💪🫶👊😀
Yes! Let's go man! I am 57 and can see the potential of getting back into 300 yard carry drives with 170 MPH ball speed and 115-120 Club speed with Driver!
@@golflessons I see more potential in getting the ball on the fairway, having a longer approach in, and not fucking up my back, so I can play into my 80s 😅
I started experimenting with moving my hands up and down on the grip and experienced a sensation with how the mass of the club was moving around my center. Of course I had to search this and lucky for me you created a video on this! Normally I would grip the club closer to the butt section (for max speed) and for that reason I could never really feel the mass moving around my center. Once I gripped down (what was maybe an inch) I could feel the club moving around me much more. I guess how I can relate with what you said is perhaps I was creating more leverage or counter weighting the club swing? Like swinging a hammer from the end of a hammer vs choking up on the handle a tad to create leverage? Thanks Shawn!
I had a Taylor M2 driver with a 3 wood shaft. I could hit 250 yards and find the fairway most of the time (our fairways are narrow where I play). Golf instructor told me that it was a mistake to use that club that I would get much better distance with a standard shaft, so I changed to a standard driver shaft. Not much difference in distance and I find the trees more often. After watching this I think I’ll resurrect that Taylor.
Shawn - I guess when you’re swinging at your speed, you can afford to lose some distance for accuracy. At my 85-90 speed probably will see a bigger difference.
I remember Anthony Kim used to grip down on all his clubs. I've tried it off and on over the years. I'm currently not doing it, I might have to give it another go. I did like how the back inch or so creates kind of a counter balance believe it or not.
I'm always way more consistent when I grip down, but I always fight this bone headed tendency to grip at the very end of the grip, partially because I'm 6'7" and it feels more natural and because in the back of my head I'm thinking longer club equals more speed despite the fact I disprove it virtually every time I choke down.
Same happened to me. When the drivers shafts went from 43.5 to 45.5 I lost around 20 yards. So I lower my grip on the driver and on the fairway woods too.
Well, my daughter is that height and has a 47 inch driver for her long drive competitions and has been in the top 10 in world rankings for the last 2 years going as low as 7th! When she plays, she goes full 46 inches and carries the ball like me at 280 to 295 carry! Golf is a blast!
I’ve been using a 43.5” driver and feel I have control. I use a 41.5” 4 wood for the same reason. I also one length irons and hybrids. My hybrids are the length of a 7 iron and irons are the the length of a eight iron. I feel I’m more consistent with that set up. Thanks for the video.
What a coincidence … so this past weekend I was playing with a good friend and he mentioned his driver was cut down to 44 1/4 inches. My driver is on the longer side at 46 inches. On the 17th and 18th holes (a par 5 and 4 respectively) I used his driver which 1) felt very short yet controllable 2) much lighter and easier to whip “effortlessly” through the ball. The result were 2 dead straight 285 yrd+ carry drives that rolled out to well over 300 yards on the fairway. This only verified with QC quad level accuracy the numbers.
Right on Tyler! This will be a great feedback to Callaway of which I am on the fitting board here in Canada! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! 😀👍
@@golflessons another interesting tidbit is I’m a pretty big guy .. 6’4 285 lbs and whenever I’ve been measured for grips it’s recommended I get midsize. While I do have large hands not denying that I don’t have particularly long fingers but more a large palm with shorter paw like fingers. With the midsize grips on my clubs it feels hard to hold in the fingers and always rubs a hole in the heel pad of my glove. believe it or not a woman’s grip feels perfect for me when I watch your videos on how the club should be gripped properly. The base of palm to tip of middle finger measurement might work for 95% of people. I just know for me having an unusual hand structure it doesn’t apply to me.
If have a tight shot or the wind is a bit swirly I grip down on the club and it's way easier to hit into the teeth of the wind and I actually find if I choke down I nearly get the same distance out of it.
The last time I was on the course I left the driver in the trunk.. started with the first 3 wood off the tees. Ended with my partner begging me to stick with my hybrid off the tee. The only club I was making descent contact with.
I love your content and have been following you off and on for a few years! I wanted to ask about your swing and set up....it is definitely unique to you and how you are built. You bend your knees more than most and you have a steep backswing. At the end of the day, you totally stripe your shots! I was wondering if you have done videos on set up and club plane for us mere mortals who are not tall and built like you! Lol! Just curious if beyond your basic premise of "cutting grass", do you recommend a basic set up that may help. I also notice you "whip" your arms more than others recommend....in other words, seems like you throw the club more than use the ground and rotate. Just my perception!
Have you seen our “grass whip training shawn clement” video? What you don’t realize is that YOUR ANATOMY will find it’s way to IT’S PROPER SWING PLANE when you are able to cut grass in both directions with a nice whipping action. A baseball hitter gets the bat on the proper plane depending on where he wants to hit the ball and at what hight he delivers to that spot from! The darn thing shallows like nothing else! So you need to get your butt on our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and see our “uphill-downhill-ball above and ball below” shots, our “throwing series” where I teach you how to throw clubs of all lengths from wedge to driver and then the all mighty “goldie locks series” which trains you how to predict contact based on where you want to throw the club and basic fundamental videos such as “match backswing to ball direction” and “blur of club” and the arc-blur unstoppable momentum” series; just to name a few gems!

Shawn, What model LA shaft are you using ? Are you leaning towards having the driver at 45.5 and grip down on it ? With a 44" driver do you add weight to the head ? Swing Weight Matter ? Obviously the 45.5 would have a much higher swing weight . Is there a limit to how low a swing weight should not get to, to not loose feel ?
If I went longer and gripped down, I would get 65 grams; I went 44 inches with 75 grams and the model is the Bryson shaft at level 4 which is stiff. Weight feels great at that length and I am killing it!
Maybe I missed something here but... if you consistently grip down on the driver for accuracy, shouldn't you just cut it off by an inch and rebalance? The grip would be a smaller circumference if you grip down every time. Wouldn't that effect your grip? Wouldn't you want to grip every club at that same point of the grip and have them the same feel for your grip? (I get that there are times when you want to grip down for accuracy and feel but these don't necessarily address driver and 3-wood)
It is all about the feel for many; either one will work and be beneficial; look at what Brook Henderson does; some like that feel from childhood gripping down on their parents clubs!
great video!! what's your opinion in terms of chopping short vs gripping down the driver? the reason i ask is because most of PGA tour player cut the length instead of gripping down...

@shawn - I know this should probably go to you for the subscription site, and I hope that I can sign up for that soon, but my ball striking with irons and my wedge play have been phenomenal lately and so have my 3 wood and hybrids. However, I CANNOT for the life of me hit a draw with my driver. I cannot get the ball to turn over. I do not understand how I can work EVERY club in my bag the way I want, but the driver is ALWAYS right going right, or a pull hook when I am setup for a fade. Any tips would greatly be appreciated. I have checked ball position, action to target, spine angle, tilt, and everything else but I just cant seem to get my Driver to do what the other 99% of my bag can.
See “Driver for accuracy shawn clement” and if that does not work, it is your equipment: if you have driver with an adjustable tip, turn it a quarter turn one way or the other and see how the shaft kicks. If that helps, but affects the loft, get the shaft tip changed but removing and re-gluing it in a different spot; if it does not help, get fit for another driver.
Hi love the videos I wish I was striking the ball good but I have fallen into a dark place of just going blank in my mind about the target so I am all over the place and am swinging with way to much effort and short on results
Just an aside. They weren't quite as long as a regular driver, but close enough for what we gained in accuracy.
I cut my driver as well 1/2 inch and copied your „Stripes“ on top of the Driver. Result positiv as of now I am - the first time- able to aim with my driver properly. You hit 3 driver set ups. The title of the post was about driver. You read out all sort of numbers for & minutes as if I was taking notes. Then without summarizing any of it you digressed into taking about wedges.
Fabulous lesson. Well thought out and useful lesson for all levels of golfers. Liked the idea of shortening the grip in windy conditions.
People always questioned why Brookes Henderson gripped down as opposed to using shorter shafts. I believe you answered that question. Thanks Shawn.

You just need a simple task; see “grass whip training shawn clement” and get good at that first.
Should i be concerned about the reduction in swing weight when i grip down, if i go down 1.5 inch that would be about 6 swing weights?
You would do this only if it suits you! Some swing faster when gripping down; I don’t; I swing better at full length of club at the correct length.
Interesting, why does gripping down reduce spin?
So club head speed isn't changing drastically but how is the shorter club changing your club path, attack angle, ECT vs the original length?
None; it is still the longest club in the bag and you can tee it high and let it fly or tee it low and hit the low running power fade knuckle ball!
if I am gripping down 1 1/2" on my driver do I need to add weight to the head?
Not necessarily! It did mot take me long to get used to my 1.5 inches shorter driver! Now all the standard ones feel way too long!
Brooke Henderson grips down on her clubs and look how well she has performed. Can you give us a video on how to hit a power fade?
yes! See “power fade shawn clement”
If you have long arms for your height -grip down the shaft as far as needed
Would someone with a lower swing speed, 85-90 mph, get the same results?
You may get more speed! Because your ability to whip the club could be easier and therefore faster!!💪👍😀
