So glad you did this. I just shaved 1 inch off of my Callaway Driver shaft as advised by a low handicap friend of mine, and Lord what a difference....my son said that he never saw me swing it so well...the control is so much better and I'm not taking the club too far inside anymore and creating those ugly hooks, and I'm actually gaining speed & distance - I wish I had thought of this sooner! Just referred a bunch of golfers to your channel....cheers!
@@murdochmcewangolf Thank u. I fixed my left wrist "cupping" issue. I just had to take the time to work on my backswing with a mirror down the line, and it helped a lot. I just don't have the forearm flexibility to do it all the time, but it's much better. Cheers!
@@murdochmcewangolf My "swing" is a horror show...my 14 yr. old son is kicking ass, just had a swing lesson last week; our PGA swing coach is pretty much on line with your teachings. His posture and club spacing was incorrect. Can't thank him and you enough...cheers...!
@nightwolf2666 Did you do anything to your driver other than cut one inch off? Did you cut down the grip end or the end that connects to the head? Just curious as I know cutting down a club impacts swing weight and flex and I have been considering cutting mine down an inch as well...
Agree with you, hold the driver long generate more head speed but hitting in the sweet spot with square face give better result, accuracy and distance. Great video!!
I'm 54 and I've got a couple of bad disc's in my lower back, I've struggled for consistency in my driving, the rest of my game is fine. I went to my local driving range last week and for some reason as an experiment I put my hands further down the shaft and bingo! My drives are actually going down the niddle of the fairway now, just such a simple change and I'm playing so much better.
@@garyp1803 well done! (It’s happened because you’ve now got the driver a suitable length to your swing (which without looking seeing you I don’t know for sure) which is probably 3/4 length because of your back. Well done! Thank you for your comment and enjoying my video
choking down worked for me, just two days ago. choking down on the club was my prime goal for the day's round, for every club, driver to wedge, except the putter. So I hit 14 of 18 greens, a first for me. And 12 of 14 fairways. I shot a 75 from the white tees. I'm stoked now. Can't wait to get back on the course, except next time I'll choke down on my putter as well. I had 6 bogies, all missed 4 to 5 foot putts. I should've looked at your video a long time ago.

great advice, well explained - medium handicappers or slightly smaller players just aren't properly advised on things like this - it also improves grip for those with smaller hands - even McIlroy plays with driver 2" shorter
@@cjgaeilge4350 the driver is the club that has been dramatically lengthened (so will be very noticeable if you grip down). 5,7 woods and hybrids not so much shortening needed especially if 10 plus years old 👍🏼
First timer here. My experience with choking down on the grip of my driver, came when I lit, under a tree, low branches, no back swing, no follow thru. So, I choked down on the grip, to a short but firm putting stroke and sent the ball out over a hundred yards. He's full of it you say, I say, nay. Next time at the driving range, or next time your under a tree, take out your driver, grip it almost down past the end of the grip, with a putting stroke, send the ball down the fairway. Works well for keeping your ball down out of the limbs. Practice this shot and amaze your friends. Bonus: Open your stance and slap at the ball and watch it fade. This is good when you can't move the ball straight at the hole, you don't want to punch out sideways, or behind you. Practice. Now, excuse me, I have to go and shorten me five hundred dollar Calloway. 😁
Got a 42.5 inch long senior flex shaft fitted to my Ping driver, results, straighter longer, lower more penetrating flight, and far more consistent, from a 70 years old single figure handicap player
True story - our hcap 1 hole in my home course is a dogleg right. OB left. Water right. I need to hit a driver there just to have a decent look at my second shot to an elevated green. Because of the trouble, my last 4 rounds - I gripped down about 1.5inches (i'm playing with a 46in ventus shaft) and all 4 shots were 15-20 yards longer than where my normal drives end up and dispersion was a lot tighter. I noticed: 1) Contact was really good. 2) More stable through the swing. 3) Swing felt more compact.
Thank you so much for this lovely comment! I apologise for my late response I’m normally more on the ball with getting back to my golfers! I’m sorry. Well done! I used to choke down on my driver and really preferred how that felt. Then a couple years ago I got away from it trying to get more distance. However, no more distance consistently came but I'm still using all the club. In today's round, I'm going back to a choke up driver again. One thing I've been wondering with this is whether it would be better to choke down on the driver or just get a shorter length driver?
@@Nick-kq2sw thank you for the message. I’d definitely choke down and maybe put reminder tape at the top of the grip so you’re not tempted to go full length again. Cutting down can sometimes affect the shaft flex and swing weight to where the club won’t feel the the same
