found ROOT ROT on my monstera albo | huge chop to individual nodes + repot to try and save

  • This is what I wish/should have done differently when I chopped + repotted my monstera albo a few weeks ago:
-I would have started with a newly hydrated plant
-either chop first and acclimate the cutting to its own pot and then pot together later OR
-repot and once acclimated to its new pot, chop
In hindsight I did too much to the plant all at once causing it to go into major shock that led to root rot.
I am happy to report that only 3 days later, the cuttings look fully hydrated with flat leaves so I’m hopeful I will be able to save my monstera albo even if it means starting all over again.

Root rot it always a bummer but I’ve learned starting them over is sometimes a blessing in disguise! It will obviously take a lot longer but a lot of my plants have bounced back quick and look even better than what they once were

I saw a video today where the person said to dip your cut ends into charcoal. I have never heard of that before, but I am going to do it. I used Great White on my chopped end after soaking in peroxide and water, so I will see what happens. So sorry to see this didn't work for you. I would do Fluval, not that you asked.

This happened to me, too. In addition, your container is too big. Use a smaller container and repot separately for now.

The myth of a small pots and root bound roots is just that a myth...Root bound roots are dried out and not absorbing the correct amount of water and nutrients to sustain a plant the size that Monstera's grow. Please read my above comment for more information...I transition from 8 inch pots I bought my Monstera's in to 12 inch pots after 1 month of transitioning/acclimating my Monstera's into my grow room. They are growing HUGE and shooting multiply new leaves!!!

@@petedetraglia4776 Ive seen people who do the exact opposite and have big ones. Depends on your plant and conditions

This just happened with a peru I repotted and put on a moss pole. I just watched it lose leaves everyday. Finally , just like you, I took it all apart and am rotting what I could salvage in stratum. I felt the same way. I felt so bad because it "was" a beatiful plant. My hope is it will be beatiful again. Your albo will be beautiful, patience and time😂. My heart goes out to you!!!

Oh noooo, I'm so sorry this happened to your beautiful plant. This just happened to my biggest Thai Constellation a couple weeks ago and I had to chop up the whole thing. It was so upsetting, so I definitely felt your pain watching this video. On the bright side you now have a bunch of beautiful Albo's. I hope they all thrive for you. 😊

Really appreciate this video, it may be bad now but I’m pretty sure this will turn out to be a blessing. Looking forward to seeing the beautiful plants that will grow from this. Can’t wait to see the update!

Root rot is not caused by over watering, it's caused by too compact of a soil not draining out. I'm using a mixture of coco pete, perlite, orchard bark, cultural charcoal, worm castings, and only 30% potting soil. I line the bottom on my pot with mainly perlite and orchard bark for drainage. My Monstera Deliciouso, Monstera Thai constellation, and Monstera andersonii are growing incredibly fast with huge leaves after using this potting mix. Using a moisture meter is crucial for monitoring when to water also. I also run a humidifier, small fan, and Sensi 24 watt growing bulbs in my plant room that also has large windows in it. You not going to fry the leaves on these plants in a indirect sun lite room as the window already knocks down the intensity of the suns rays. If you are worried about that you can put up a sheer curtain. These plant need lots of light to grow when they get large and low light conditions makes respiration of the plant way too slow...For those worried about overwatering, bottom water your plant and use a clay pot for wicking off more moisture from the soil...and for the non sense that people say these plant like to be root bound in a small pot is B.S. Root bound roots DO NOT absord water correctly as they are dried out and hard. I've bought my monstera thai and monstea Deliciouso is 8 inch pots and after about a month of transition to the conditions of my grow room I repotted them into 12 inch clay pots and they are shooting huge leaves like crazy and thrivin... The Right soil mixture, watering only when needed, and fertilizer regiment is WAY more important than pot size. Also please do not use balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10....Nitrogen runs the bus and is the key element. A fertilizer ratio should be 3-1-2 ratio. Your plant's nitrogen intake should never be competing with other elements. You can also use micro nutrients suppliments in small amounts and sea kelp is a great plant regulator. Also soil PH for these plants should be between 6 and 7 so the nutrients in your soil can be easily absorbed by the roots. Sorry about your plant. Hope is recovers quickly.

I never like to coat the fresh cut with wax ,I think the warmth of that stresses the plant

I had the same problem with my monstera. I used a plastic pot with holes in the bottom like the one you used and it didn’t allow the soil to dry quick enough. I switched to orchid pots with holes on the sides of the pot and bottom. Since doing so, the monsteras have been great.

I keep all my variegated monstera in water full time if not in cactus soil. I don’t mess with airy mixes anymore. They stay wet for way too long in my personal opinion. I’m sure it will bounce back though! Still gorgeous plant 🌱 🖤

Oh no! I hate coco husk, it holds too much water in my environment and always rots the roots.😢

Did you let the top cut callous over for enough time? I lost my big monstera by cutting /separating the stems under the soil line and not giving it like overnight to callous

Looks like pot was way too big and held moisture too long you’ll reroot and they will grow, much smaller pots!
