Literally cringing because I've just "treated" a plant with root rot and I've done it all wrong. Thank you Kaylee for such a helpful video. Now I'm off to treat my plant again--the right way!
Same here! I carefully repotted my root rot damaged snake plant a couple of weeks ago -seemed to be fine afterward- but just noticed yesterday that another large leaf is going. I see now that I missed a couple of vital steps.
Oh my god the amount of time you must have spent on research and especially editing... I really love your videos, they are super informative and always look amazing:)
So far, this is the best and most straightforward easy to understand breakdown of anything plant related that I have seen on UA-cam in over a year! Thank you so much for this because I recently moved and I suspected all of my plants got root rot. After watching this video, I am sure of it! my silver sword, my bird of paradise, my fig tree, and my Monstera… Actually, even my snake plant all seem to be suffering, and now I know what to do because of you!
I watched this video last night bc I was researching why my leaves where turning yellow. I know it wasn’t a watering or humidity issue as I have a moisture meter and a humidifier. I checked the roots this morning and low and behold, root rot!! I cleaned off all the soil and gave it a little hydrogen peroxide bath and repotted her. Hoping this saves her. Wish me luck
Spend all afternoon treating two plants with root rot yesterday only to find out now I didn’t do it right so I’ll need to do it again 😂😅. Thanks for the detailed information.
Worth mentioning, not all Cinnamon will work. Most Cinnamon is not even Cinnamon but made of other plants or chemical flavorings, its Ceylon Cinnamon that is the true anti fungal / pest deterrent
This will be why the shop bought cinnamon powder never worked for me. I used to use it on the ends of cuttings where I'd removed rot and it just made things worse
Most commercially sold cinnamon is from the tree Cinnamomum cassia. Ceylon cinnamon is from Cinnamomum verum (formerly called Cinnamomum zeylanicum). Meaning, both products are from very closely related trees. Both products contain similar chemicals, such as cinnamaldehyde, but the proportions vary between the two. I think it's likely that either one should work against fungus and other pathogens.
Air is really good for root rot also. My Thai got root rot when I first got it an I took it out of the water an laid it out in the air for couple of hours. Then trimmed off rotted part an left it out in air another couple hours. No problems since. Good luck 😀
Please talk about how you root plants in Leca and how you transition plants successfully to Leca. I know there are lots of videos out there, but I trust you more. Pleaseeeeee
Wow thank you for this wonderfully comprehensive explanation! I am just starting to grow herbs using the Kratky method and ran into the root rot horror. I've been watching so many videos to learn about it but none were as thorough and professionally presented as this one! I'll be diving into more of your content =)
Thanks so much for all the time and energy you put into this video, Kaylee. I’ve had houseplants for a long time and have dealt with root rot before but you taught me a lot I didn’t know! I love your channel and never miss a video. I have learned a great deal from you and appreciate you so much. Thank so much again!
Thank you Kaylee Ellen. I'm dealing with root rot and fertilizer burn for the first time after being out of town for a few months and I'm hoping to salvage my plants.
Totally agree, especially about cutting off some of the leaves if the roots are less, many people dont like to cut off old or yellow leaves, but if u dont it only burden the plant with unnecessary foliage. As long as u have some healthy leaves, cut the unhealthy or old leaves so that the plant will be able to focus on the roots and on new growth.
This has really been a lot of help for my Lily's and I am outdoor straight soil giant calla Lilly's and this rot has hit twice the first time I saved 90% and this time I was not aware it was so advanced that I've lost half of my plants but everything in this video is a game changer
I just recently discovered your channel and I'm going, to be honest, here, you are AMAZING!!! I love the way you explain things, your passion for plants, and your smart decisions when it comes to business! Big thank you xxxx
I love how comprehensive this video is on root rot. Also very helpful and informative for someone like me who’s considering to shift to Leca substrates. Thanks Kaylee💚😇
I really like your delivery style. It makes you sound very trustable. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. No matter how I put my point across, people will be second-guessing me.
Saving three plants from the church and landfill. Brought them home last night because there was a pool of water in the foil covering. The soil smelled funny so I knew something wasn’t good. In handling, most of the leaves fell off and they are almost bald headed 😂 but I know it’s fine. Found out from this video I didn’t clean off the roots good enough as I’m pretty heavy handed. Back to cleaning the roots again and doing a peroxide bath. Also learned about the cinnamon by a commenter. Great and informative video!
Hi Kaylee, I have tomato plants that are growing very quickly, but my only Roma tomato plant is suffering. I assumed I was overwatering that particular type of tomato plant so I stopped and noticed the soil still wasn't drying up. So I took it out of the soil, carefully washed the roots out with tea tree soap, brought it inside, and put it in my hydroponic bath with hydrogen peroxide and oxygen stones for 3 days. This has immediately brought back every suffering plant I've ever put in it overnight and is awesome for getting clippings to grow strong roots. However, this plant stayed wilted even after 3 days. So I went ahead and replanted it in fresh soil with extra worm castings and watered it somewhat conservatively with a weak compost tea. However, after 3 weeks, the soil still remained wet from when I replanted. It's as if it is almost unable to absorb anything including water. It gets the morning sun but is shaded from the afternoon sun because I live in Florida. I have tried moving it a couple times with no effect. The stem and the leaves are still green and the stem is still strong although extremely wilted, I've had to increase stake supports a bit. I'm concerned about it sitting in the wet soil this long and not sure what else to do and whether it will get worse or better. The roots are very thin and break easily even though it was my largest tomato plant at 15". Any advice is welcome. Thank you so much!!
Very helpful sharing ideas . Thanks a lot . I can try this method esp. W/ hydrogen peroxide in my plants and so with the cinnamon powder. Very absorbing .
Loved this video - especially for the level of detail, science and recommendations beyond typical root rot guidance (is, don't overwater, cut it off, and hope for the best). thanks for all you do!
Growing up I will always see my mom add cinnamon and garlic water/tea to her plants to prevent treat fungus. And I've done the same thing. My plants have been happy 😁 i love how put together Kaylee's videos always are
The amount of work that went into this video 😱 Thank you!! I am guilty of a lot of the things that lead to root rot 😞 Good tip with hydrogen peroxide, need to try it. And yes, I once had an actual MUSHROOM in my plant pot 🥲
Thank you for posting this very comprehensive video on root rot. I do wish though that there were some information about root rot applicable to outdoor vegetable plants.
thx, especially you mentioned the final conentration which the solution should contain. this little fact is what many advisers skip and is probably one of the most important points to nut burn the roots while still having use of the desinfecting effect of h202. thanks a lot. great content!
I am going out to buy peroxide right now, thank you this is exactly what i was looking for. I would really like to see you working through the roots of an import set (perhaps 5 or so), and seeing your decision making process for aselection of plants covering both examples of root and stem rot. These examples were really helpful. Seeing through your eyes for an larger set covering multiple species and levels of maturity would really make me feel more confident :) thank you for being amazing!
Soak in hydrogen per oxide, dry use. Or Bake the soil. Or Just lay them out in sun if you've space and obviously afternoon sun. Obviously use some sort of fungicide too in such case.
Thank you for this video! I have a potted azalea that's been doing horribly recently and the soil has always been wet. I'm going to fix it now so I hope it survives
I bought a Monstera deliciosa in March. The plant took almost a month to unfurl the only new leaf it had come with. In Spain, bright indirect light, mid May, no changes to the plant whatsoever. I tried everything: putting it outside, less watering, more watering, spraying the leaves, repotting... until two weeks ago I noticed a start of yellowing leaves and general decay on the plant. I washed away all the soil and 85% of the roots were rotten (I swear the plant didn’t look that bad on its top parts) and now is on lecca, adding some rooting product into the water I managed to get a tiny root ball that I’m sure it’s the thing that keeps the plant thriving. I was hesitant on the H2O2 thing, but today I decided to give it a try because the plant keeps deteriorating, but at a slower pace. I’m also going to cut the leaves once they start yellowing by now so the plant can use its resources to root properly. Now all I’ll do is wait...
My poor pothos has been in a nasty cycle for over 6 months. It died all the way back so I took the few healthy stems out, replaced the pot and substrate, but I didn’t kill the bacteria with hydrogen peroxide. It’s been barely holding on, not visibly rotting but also not growing, so I took some old cuttings from it that I keep in a jar and tried to fill it in a little, they are all dying right now in the pot. I’m just going to take them out, sanitize them, and keep them in the jar until I can get some better substrate than plain old garden mix. I really feel like I’m losing this battle
Thank you! I have a VERY sentimental Calandiva plant that has root rot.😢 I’m praying that this works to save my precious plant. I just wish I knew the best soil to use for repotting. I’m also going to try and propagate some of the healthy parts.🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 New sub!❤🎉❤
I always keep cinnamon on hand for my plants. Typically it is for a rooting hormone. When my mother in law's money tree got mealy bugs, I learned about using it for pests. The other day I found a pest in one of my succulents. I sprayed it down with an alchohol and water mix, then put cinnamon in water bottle and just shook it until it was easy squeezed of the spray spout. I watered my plants with it. They seemed to like it. With the hydrogen peroxide, can you water your plants with the 1:1 mix? If so, how often should this be done? Thanks! 😊
My peperomia obtusifolia had brown spots and wilting and I thought it’s just cuz I over watered it and it’ll get better if I let its soil dry out on itself.. but what I didn’t know is that that was root rotting and now I have lost all the leaves but the stem..I discarded the soil and sanitized the pot it was in ,I cut off the dead part of the stem and now I have about a two inch long stem with a few healthy roots.. what do I do? what I did to not kill off what I have left of my “plant” is place it in water and a shaded spot and I’m hoping for the best
This is the MOST informative video I've ever watched about root rot. Kaylee dropping some science on us, and I'm here for it.
Literally cringing because I've just "treated" a plant with root rot and I've done it all wrong. Thank you Kaylee for such a helpful video. Now I'm off to treat my plant again--the right way!
Did it make it?! 🥺
Same here! I carefully repotted my root rot damaged snake plant a couple of weeks ago -seemed to be fine afterward- but just noticed yesterday that another large leaf is going. I see now that I missed a couple of vital steps.
As a science person, I really appreciate how you explain plant care with science. How you break things down is awesome!
So cool how your back drop isn't even a backdrop. It's real, but looks like a backdrop because it's so perfect lol
Hands down the BEST and MOST COMPREHENSIVE root rot video I've seen. Thank you so much for this
Oh my god the amount of time you must have spent on research and especially editing...

Handy bonus of the hydrogen peroxide treatment: It also kills the fungus eggs and larvae in the soil!
True! Really works!
Hay

i don't buy cinnamon. is there a way to tell if the cinnamon is Ceylon cinnamon? would it be in the packaging? thanks!
@@ch3ngg Yes, it should be on the packaging. It's also called True Cinnamon. If it doesnt mention it, its most likely not.
This will be why the shop bought cinnamon powder never worked for me. I used to use it on the ends of cuttings where I'd removed rot and it just made things worse

Even cinnamon sticks from the grocery store???
debugging root rot! I love it
Yes im here for it, I just had root rot on my baby Thai so I need this
Air is really good for root rot also. My Thai got root rot when I first got it an I took it out of the water an laid it out in the air for couple of hours. Then trimmed off rotted part an left it out in air another couple hours. No problems since. Good luck 😀
Love this! I'd love a Leca video about how care for your plants in Leca at the shop, what nutrients you use etc. 😊💚
Your content is sooo high quality🤍 i really appreciate it!
IM HERE EARLY!
honestly i don't have root rot situation, i just binge watch Kaylee's videos to much
Same! But it’s always good to know information like thus beforehand so you can spot it and know how to treat it. :)
@@s.p5254 yeah! It's been nice to know such knowledge.
I love how clean and professional the visuals and the editing are in this video! Wonderful advice, thank you!
More of these kind of video please.
Those root diagrams were really nice!!
That thumbs up in part 5 was amazing. Total 90s DIY vines and I’m living for it!!
Awesome production in this video Kaylee! The content was good, great music, and animations. You're getting so good at this!
17:47 thanks a lot for the info my orchid has root rot. I’m waiting to see if it’s going to make
Please talk about how you root plants in Leca and how you transition plants successfully to Leca. I know there are lots of videos out there, but I trust you more. Pleaseeeeee
My plant had one of those stupid killer nets and I’m happy I caught on
After repotting, should I water the plant right away, or wait for a couple of days?
WAIT
That’s like my number one question but no one seems to mention this in their videos!
Wow thank you for this wonderfully comprehensive explanation! I am just starting to grow herbs using the Kratky method and ran into the root rot horror. I've been watching so many videos to learn about it but none were as thorough and professionally presented as this one! I'll be diving into more of your content =)
It is a great video. I might have missed it but I see she doesn't respond and I don't see anything about watering right AFTER repotting!
Love your accent, btw. This is the clearest and most comprehensive video I've seen. Highly recommend it.
Thanks so much for all the time and energy you put into this video, Kaylee. I’ve had houseplants for a long time and have dealt with root rot before but you taught me a lot I didn’t know! I love your channel and never miss a video. I have learned a great deal from you and appreciate you so much.

holy heck this was THE most helpful video regarding info on root rot, HANDS DOWN!
Thank you Kaylee Ellen. I'm dealing with root rot and fertilizer burn for the first time after being out of town for a few months and I'm hoping to salvage my plants.
Please do this style video for other houseplant pests (thrips, scale, mealy...)
The quality of your videos is so good omg

I’ve adopted a monstera and found this very educational and informative. Thank you.❤
I love how comprehensive this video is on root rot. Also very helpful and informative for someone like me who’s considering to shift to Leca substrates. Thanks Kaylee💚😇
well, this is the most informative video about root rot for sure. I like how you always get straight to the point wasting no one's time.
This was so informative and clearly articulated. Kudos on the excellent video and thanks for helping me save my planty babies
One of your best! Everyone need to watch this 🙌🏻
Perfect timing! My Thai has root rot right now. Thanks!
i really thought that cinnamon in plants was just a weird myth but since i started using it, i actually notice a difference, it's great!
I really like your delivery style. It makes you sound very trustable. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. No matter how I put my point across, people will be second-guessing me.

Where are the other two million subscribers already?! This channel is the best quality and best plant collection 🙌
Very helpful, particularly for Bonsai plants. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the great info 👍 😀 💚 repotting today !!
Been looking for an informational and detailed video on plant care like this. Really appreciate the great video quality. As always love your videos
Thank you for this... it's the bit of info that i was missing. your the best.
Excellent video. I have one question. For a water and peroxide mix, how often would one apply this as a prevention?
The amount of work that went into this video 😱 Thank you!! I am guilty of a lot of the things that lead to root rot 😞 Good tip with hydrogen peroxide, need to try it. And yes, I once had an actual MUSHROOM in my plant pot 🥲

Thank you for posting this very comprehensive video on root rot. I do wish though that there were some information about root rot applicable to outdoor vegetable plants.
Love your videos. Could you make an update on your 50 year old monstera deliciosa? I think it would be awesome!

Agreed! I just bought my first monstera cutting and it came with a large blerp of stem rot. Great video, much appreciated.
Is there any way of sterilising the old soil?
Soak in hydrogen per oxide, dry use.
Or
Bake the soil.
Or
Just lay them out in sun if you've space and obviously afternoon sun.
Obviously use some sort of fungicide too in such case.
I love this video it’s so informative and detailed and it helped me with my monstera’s root rot thank you!!
Excellent! Thank you!
Best and most informative video for me so far this month. Excellent work and thank you 👍😊
Thank you for this video! I have a potted azalea that's been doing horribly recently and the soil has always been wet. I'm going to fix it now so I hope it survives
Thank you. I learned so much. I have a lot to work on.
Please do a full video of what to do about spider mites
Very informative video. I've never known what to look for when (re)potting as for spotting root rot and to know how to deal with it. Thanks so much.

Thank you, this video is a life saver for my poor Dracaena!
I wish I’d seen this when I first got into keeping house plants!
Do I water the plant after repotting it?
Did you find the answer? I need to know too. At least how much water...
Best visual video
Thank you !!!! This is so helpful and i hope you share more of your wisdom!!!
This is the best video, you explain everything in detail and is incredibly useful. Keep doing this tipe of videos
This is the type of informative content I'm here for. Very nice video!
So glad I watched this video last night! I've now discovered my peace lily has root rot so I've followed this process and hoping it will recover 🤞🏻
Thank you!! I love all your videos. I've learned so much!!!
Love the informational content! It’s reassuring just to hear information from a trusted source, even if I know it already.
After using the hydrogen peroxide mix, do you let the roots air dry before replanting and if so, how long?
Such a great video. Best one I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot on root Rot.
