I cried so much over a couple of my plants being eaten by one of my dogs, so it's okay to be emotional, we care for our plants and it's not fun when something goes wrong. But most times there are silver linings. A couple of the eaten plants are so much fuller now that I was forced to propagate. Even my peace lily that still has mangled leaves, is flowering for the first time in my care. ❤🙌
What a difference a day makes, those leaves compared to before you chopped them are incredible! I have a peace lily that was my grandma’s that was given to me after she passed away. I know it’s just a peace lily and I could go and get another one but if I were to loose this specific one, I would be in tears too, because actually it’s not just a peace lily, not to me. She holds so much sentimental value to me ❤ You’re such a good plant (and cat) momma and I can’t wait to see these monsteras bounce back!
Dont ever feel bad about being emotional. That's one of the reasons you have so many followers... your kind, sweet, gentle soul! So sad to have to chop your beautiful plants, but you are saving them. So much info today and love the suggestion of the exacto knife. Im going to go find mine! 🐈🌿
Thank you so much 🥺 Happy to share what I can and what has helped me. The knife you can get at any craft store or even amazon. They're pretty inexpensive! Someone else mentioned in the comments about bypass pruners but I'm not sure what those are 🙈
You are one of my favorite plant UA-cam channels because you seriously keep it so real… I totally felt the same way when my alocasia Jacklyn died on me…. I get how emotional it can get after taking care of a plant for so long and watching it grow and thrive… love your videos and can’t wait to see more! Keep up the good work! Your dedication, commitment and passion show in your posts!!:)
Thank you for documenting all this for us even though it’s emotional 🥹 so exciting to see them plumping up! When you were cutting and saying how sad it was, I was totally thinking…. They’re gonna be so happy and out of rot misery and now you’ll have so many plants!! 😊 ❤️
of course! 🥺 I honestly wished I did this sooner. I was so worried about my own feelings that I let these poor plants be unhappy for awhile. I love how happy all the cuttings look now ☺️
@@plantsbymelissa Exactly! I get emotionally attached to animals, plants and anything too so I get it 😂🥲 can’t wait for the next update! Have a good rest of the day (:
I felt so bad for you at the beginning of the video…I actually started tearing up with you. I have total faith in you and truly believe that you are going to bring your beautiful plants back to life 💚💚💚
My heart hurts for you!!! I had serious issues with rot with some of my alocasias and it was soooooo draining. I’ve been struggling with root rot with my Thai and albo recently but they are small cutting so I CANNOT imagine how hard it is to see a massive plant take a plunge like this. Hang in there!! You’re the best plant parent no matter what happens.
I have been watching your videos for a while, long time subscriber, wanted to thank you for all the work you do. It is so refreshing to watch your videos, knowledgeable, calm, and hopeful, even in light of some rot going on that is unavoidable in some capacity in our plant-y journeys, without a hint of negativity in your attitude and mindset. Also, would like to encourage you to continue with long videos, I hope many can join me in the sentiment that the "shorts", while they have their place and audience, are not for everybody. Thank you again.
I'm so sorry you are going through this with 2 of your most beloved plants! You are doing the right thing by propagating them in 6 months they will be giving you joy again😊
I’m so sorry Melissa! I know it’s painful but I can promise you, this will be the reset those babies need to grow new and beautifully! This happened to my first ever monstera and it was the best decision. It didn’t take as long as I thought to root! ❤you are a wonderful plant parent, you got this! good luck my girl, keep your head up. The way the moss just fell right off that albo 🥺 that last woody chunk can def grow! I threw mine in a prop box and it turned green again and activated the auxiliary bud!
Thank you!! 🥺 After seeing them later that day I felt SO bad I didn't do it sooner. They all look so happy now and I honestly can't wait to watch them grow again 🥹 I'll be excited to see all the root and growth coming in!!
Yay! I’m so happy you are feeling better about it! 🥰 they perked right up didn’t they?? Edit: I should really finish watching the whole video before commenting lol.
My monstera deliciosa is doing well in pon. I see nice white roots. It’s been about a 10 days. So it’s doing well so far. I’m learning so much from you. You explain everything so well!
I felt those first few cuts with you 💔 it must have been really difficult for you to cut appart your favorite plants and you have all the rights to be emotional about it 🫶🏻 you did the right thing for them and I’m so happy to see that they already perkep up so much! It’s a way for them to thank you for saving them and doing everything that’s best for them 💚 Love does not divide, it multiplies, as they say 😉
I’m so sorry Melissa. I know it’s hard, but you give the rest of us hope. We can all see that you’re doing everything you can to save them. If anyone can do this, it’s you! Keep going, we’re all *rooting* for you! Ps- I’m losing some of my favorites to thrips. I’ve just started my battle and I’ve been so thankful for your past videos to look back on. Thanks for all you do.
It is such an emotional journey. They’re our little babies that we nurture. You definitely did the right thing though. Think about all the plant babies you can pour your love into now ❤
For whatever reason when I saw the rooted cuts it made me so excited to get a albo😭💞 I’ve been scared to get one but this video motivated me to finally start looking 😭🌱
It can be intimidating when you are trying to root a more expensive cutting! There's always a chance something can happen but the more you prop the more confident you get with it and they do so well in water as long as they get some good light!
I wanted to give you a huge thank you for this video! I purchased a rooted aurea wet stick (mid-cut) about a week and a half ago and it has root rot. BUT - I followed your advice in this video (and I love that you added superthrive to your moss) and cut off the dead rot, put it in hydrogen peroxide and water for a few minutes and am letting it callus over. I'll put it in some moist moss with FoxFarm Microbe brew (to aid in root development) and hope for the best. Thank you so much for this informative video - your albo and aureas are beautiful 😍
I don't mind seeing you upset on camera at all. It just makes you even more personable and real. Thank you for allowing us to see this content. You were so informative as always. I love your videos and watch every single one. As for the super thrive getting crusty. That is annoying. I am wondering if you could find a cap with a dropper lid for that bottle or just transfer and label your super thrive into a dropper bottle. 😊 Thanks again!
I’ve had rot issues before with monstera lechleriana variegated when I had it imported from Thailand. I would turn the heater on in the house and set the fan on in the greenhouse to high. It’s important for warm air to circulate to avoid mold growth. Also remember that plants have enzymes that help the plant take in nutrients. Enzymes require the right temperature to function properly in plants and in humans. Also, the white leaves browning means the humidity is very low. I have my monstera albo in my ikea cabinet and the white leaves that come out are super moist and juicy with no brown.
Thanks for taking us through the process. It is amazing how they perked up. They look so happy. I purchased a one leaf node and has it in water yesterday. It looked pretty dehydrated and still does not.look perky as yours do. I did look and made sure the little bud was there. Best wishes❤
You have to have an aerial root to propagate a Monstera? I never knew that! No wonder my props haven’t been successful ahahah. Also, Stay strong and keep growing! Your feelings for your plant babies are totally valid❤
So sorry your favourite babies are going through a tough time xxxx💚 I sometimes think just keeping plants in water, SM or stratum would be the best way to go.
So happy that your babies are doing better after only one day. My regular monstera seems unhappy since I repotted it. Might be chop time, the roots were iffey
Root rot is so upsetting. ❤ I know your props will eventually be even better than the original. Your video was very helpful! I put my Superthrive in a dropper bottle so it doesn’t get crust everywhere. It also is much easier to control how much you use. ❤
I'll have to do that! Great idea and not sure why I never thought about a dropper before! thanks for sharing! The props are looking so good and so happy I did this 🥺
Sorry about your plants, but you're giving them another chance. And you'll have several new beauties! Thanks for educating us on the right way to do this! I chopped up a deliciosa, rooted them in water and recently put them in sphagnum and leca. I almost gave up on the plant! 😅 But honestly I would've loved to know this info before. 😅
Dear Melisa, I know how you feel😢 Last week I bought my dreamed aurea one leaf cutting, and I dont know what weny wrong but it died, rotted. It was very expensive for me to get it and I was so happy to finally have it. I also cried a lot when I realised it was a failure. I still hope I can get aurea cutting again sometime in future 😢 It’s really painful to lose a beloved plant Sending you lots of love
That is so amazing Melissa! I am so so happy theryre perking up…….Such a helpful video. Cheer up! You are going to have some seriously beautiful plants in a few weeks ❤❤❤
Thank you!! I can't wait for all the growth that will come. I definitely feel so much better seeing them all happy in water. I wished I chopped them sooner! 🥹
I was trying not to cry haha but held it together 🙈 I honestly was soo happy a few hours after I did this. I was sad at first but as soon as I saw them looking better it filled me with joy!
I’m so sorry to hear you went through that. Im sure our oldest plants definitely mean a lot to us 💚. But thank you for such an informational video. I recently chopped up a few monstera albos of my own, and it was nervewracking. I just have one question, how long did you let the cuttings callous for? And did you put them in bright light to let them callous fast?
Usually an hour or so but you can wait longer. Once they're no longer "wet" looking and appear dry then you can place them in water. I just left them on my table to dry 😁
Melissa, just order a case of the Dollar Tree cylinder glass vases so you have some on hand. They come in a box with dividers so they’re easy to store.
Wow, excellent work by the Plantologist Extraordinaire to say the least. If I was gambler, I would bet on a long healthy future for the plants that you worked on. Yes, I could see the improvement in the plants hat you watered. Great education, thanks for that.
:) hello and thank you for the video. I've saved and repurposed my glass yogurt containers. They are short enough and don't take up a ton of space. Hope that the propagations turns out well.
This was so helpful! As a beginner, I’ve watched so many videos on propagating and taking cuttings and almost always still walk away with questions or uncertainties. Your video was so clear about where to cut and where to expect new growth. The hardest thing for me right now is distinguishing between dead/rotten roots vs. brown roots from soil stains. I’ve also been finding a lot of mushy or black parts on the stems of my pothos water propagations. Do you recommend leaving cuttings to callous for most plants? Would it help with pothos?
Hi!! This video is super helpful!! I have a cutting that I’ve been trying to root for about a month. I started by just putting the aerial root (it’s super long) in stratum, but must’ve wet the stratum too much because I noticed the tip of the aerial root getting dark and squishy. So, I cut off the squishy part and put it straight in water instead. It’s been in water for a week or two now, but still no changes.. And now I’m questioning everything because no one told me you cover the growth point 😫 I’ve kept it out this whole time and only put the aerial root portion in stratum/water… Hoping it’s not too late for my baby cutting?! Thank you for any advice/help! 🥹 Also, I appreciate the raw emotion. A lot goes into these plants and it creates a natural attachment. It sucks when they don’t do well
If the roots aren't mushy could you save the plant by rubbing off the rotted outer portions of the roots? I just did this with a hoya and put it in my fish tank. I think the soil was hydrophobia and I over water it after I brought it home. Repotting it just made it worse. I rarely throw plants away and will do everything I can before I throw in the towel. I saved my first pink princess doing this but when I potted her she didn't do well so I ended up putting her back in the fish tank. I gave it to a friend in water and I'm excited to see how she does in soil. Since the prices have dropped so much I bought a new one this Spring. :)
Get a good amount of roots first! You'll want to see all the secondary roots forming. I pot up about 6-7 weeks usually is how long it takes for me to get a decent sized root system. I pot into an aerated mix and make sure to keep in good light!
What are your thoughts on using a little bit of silica in the moss and/or water for propagation? I received a 1 leaf Albo cutting as a special gift from my newly found sister and I am a mess at the thought of losing it. Something kept telling me to take it out of the soil and pot it come in and I’m glad I did because over 3/4 of the root had rot. I still don’t know if I can save it. 😭💔This is my first Albo too but it has such special meaning to me.
For the first time I did two cuttings on a main plant that has been doing very well. I wish I had seen your video prior because the main mistake that I made was not letting the cuttings dry and callous before putting them in water. The leaves are still green on the cuttings, but they’re drooping. Is there anything that I can do to help them along so that they don’t fail?? I don’t know if I had enough water and I wasn’t covering the aerial roots consistently with the water so I think I had two roots starting, but then fail to keep them in water. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Really feel for you an your Monsteras 💔 I know you’ll feel better when see your cuttings start pushing new roots! 💚 I chopped my Albo last week, 3 leaf top cut that had nothing growing is now pushing a new leaf. Plants are so amazing. Another thing to watch for is all white axillary buds or nodes. 🫶🏼💚
It's up to you! I like using a stake to provide support but a pole can be helpful too. The aerial roots tend to grow straight through a wire pole but if you want to prop in the future having extra roots grow inside of a clear one is nice!
You got this! Glad it was helpful! It can be scary chopping one since they're more expensive but honestly they do so well rooting in water and really good light! The more you propagate the better you get at them! ☺️💚
While you cutting the stems, just don't cut it straight, give it an angle then chop. end will have more tissues to heal. In my experience, i generally avoid coco peat, used more chunky pumice and orchid bark and leaf mold, monsteras roots are tend to be thick so they don't like to have peat mixed soil. that's why if they catches root rot its very difficult to cure, specially for who don't have tropical climate.
So glad for you that everything looks better and hydrated again, but I wonder if you dont check the color of the growpoint. What I could see most where nicely marbled but at least one was pure white. doesn't that give all white leaves and a plant that is doomed because it has no chlorophyl ( or other way around, a pure green growpoint will give a reverted plant )
It could still grow some green on it even though it appears all white :) You don't really know until it pushes out or it could grow one white leaf and the next have lots of green. This happened to me on one of my others.
Sorry if you already explained this, but do you know what *caused* the rot on the Albo? Different cause on the Aurea? Oh, and what were the ages on these 2 plants? And another question: Had you "harvested" any props from either? Thank you, Melissa, for using this heartbreaking outcomes as a teachable moment.
Happy to share! All the 7 variegated monsteras I had got rot all by this window from the old soil I used (sol soils) It sat wet for too long and I didn't realize this mix holds onto that much water. Unfortunately, they were slowly all rotting. I caught it once I noticed my aurea was slow to grow this spring. Then I checked them all and they all had rotted roots. I treated them all but 3 the rot kept coming back including these two. Monstera albo cutting I got in sept 2020 and the aurea I got in 2021 about a year later and haven't chopped either of them before.
@@plantsbymelissa thank you for the thorough response. I *wondered* if this was part of the sol saga. I admire you for not raggin' on that product while performing the rescue on camera. Amazing how attached we get to our plants, esp after 2 or 3 years in our care.
I love your videos ❤. In the water propagations you never use fertilizer? When I made water propagations from my monstera I used a little amount of organic fertilizer and the rooting process was very quick. Good luck for the little plants ❤.
thank you! I just use plain tap water :) I feel like I don't keep them in water long enough to add nutrients. Once I pot them up though I sprinkle in some slow release 💚
I’m a new monstera mom and I recently got root rot from over watering. Is there hope and how is it that I water propagate if they don’t like standing water? I’m a condor just not doing things right now?
I think it is sad when you have to give up on a plant that you love. I've had several and couldn't propagate them either. I'm glad you can save pieces of these. I just wish I could figure our why my tiny sedum won't be happy. It is so cute but I have to just accept that it won't live here.
Never knew you had to had an aerial root to propagate a Monstera! Tbh I’ve never heard this step before either! Is this just for the variegated types or is this for every type? Not doubting your methods at all, genuinely just curious and kind of confused ahaha😄
I can also sugest bypass pruners for cutting plants. they dont crush the stems, easier and safer to use. Also it doest not have to have an areal root on the node to root as a cutting, from my experience most of my cuttings root not from the areal root.
Ok so I just had to prune all of my monstera Thai con’s roots they were all rotted. I cut them and put her in water she’s in a 4inch pot or was lol do you think that is the best rooting method ?
So sad you had to cut this beautiful Monstera. But in your care the cuttings wil do great!! Do you know when you make the cut you can put cinnamon where you cut. It gives a bigger chance that the cutting won't rot or bacteria gets to it when it's dry out. Maybe try it first on other cuttings first to test it. You can google this for more information. Or maybe you already knew ofcourse. So succes with these, it will be ok😜💝
My monstera aurea had rot, i cut it into 8 cuttings, only one came out with variegation. One reverted, 2 didn't grow any roots and all others died of rot. 😭😭😭 Even the top cut 😭 I'm never getting fussy plants again
How are they doing today? Also, you could invert the same style cup and set it on top as a cover and it will allow it to grow. Just wrap the top around the two cup lips and whallah- little greenhouse!!
Ugh so sad to see but on the bright side you’re about to have soooo many new cuties…YOU GOT IT 🙌🏼! Alsooo! Thx for the Savannah plant recommendations on insta! Got myself a few new cuties to take home! 🥰🪴 good luck on the monsterasssss!
Is it okay that during water propagation of monstera the stems go black? The roots are not mushy or anything but it seems unhealthy that the stems are getting black at the cuts.
nope! Just tap water and nothing extra. I usually keep them in water for about 6 weeks or so until you get a fist sized root ball then pot up. once they start rooting they take off ☺️
I actually preferred just using water! The stratum worked well but I didn't notice much of a rooting difference and since the stratum is dark I couldn't see the node.
It'll be awhile :) I wouldn't pot them up until they grow a decent root system and a new little leaf first. Some probably won't root until a new leaf forms and roots grow off of it. I'll end up transferring them to a larger pot with moss then once I have enough roots pot them up!

Lots more plants! 😂🙌 I feel so much better now after seeing them look so happy after chopping them all 🥺
That is so amazing Melissa!
ughhhhhh I got teary-eyed 💚💚💚💚💚 fingers crossed for the plans 😊
I was trying not to cry haha but held it together 🙈 I honestly was soo happy a few hours after I did this. I was sad at first but as soon as I saw them looking better it filled me with joy!
@plantsbymelissa yes I saw later on in the vid and got excited too I screamed 🤣🤣
Oh Melissa!! What a sad bit informative video. Thank you and wish you well. 🌿🪴🌱
You were handed lemons and you made us lemonade. Your plants look better already. Great video, very informative. I learned so much 🙂
So nice of you! Thank you ☺️
I’m so sorry to hear you went through that.
You’ve convinced me on the exacto knife wow!! I might get one today…
Melissa, just order a case of the Dollar Tree cylinder glass vases so you have some on hand. They come in a box with dividers so they’re easy to store.
Thank you! 🫶
Wow, excellent work by the Plantologist Extraordinaire to say the least. If I was gambler, I would bet on a long healthy future for the plants that you worked on. Yes, I could see the improvement in the plants hat you watered. Great education, thanks for that.
I'm so sorry that you had to chop your monsteras but this has to be one of the best tutorial on how to chop them.
The positive side of this is that you will end up with lots and lots of baby monsteras very soon 😊
I got 2 woody chunks to root and shoot. Just keep it in very high humidity and warmth. Mine were in moss and in a prop tub on a heat mat
Sorry your monsters got root rot. Hopefully, they’ll come back bigger & better!
Appreciate that so much!!
As always I enjoyed the video 📸 and learned a few things. 😊 thank you ❤
It sucks when they don’t do well
I’ve been struggling with my albo. Rot has taken over so I chopped it and starting over
I'm so sorry! 🥺
Also, after roots begin to grow, what’s next ? New to all this. TIA.
Get a good amount of roots first! You'll want to see all the secondary roots forming. I pot up about 6-7 weeks usually is how long it takes for me to get a decent sized root system. I pot into an aerated mix and make sure to keep in good light!
Thanku for sharing how to exactly propagate, I use to live in brooklet, I've been watching u for a while, love ur content, and again thanku 🤗💯👍
Thank you for being here and for watching! Happy to share! 🥰
@@plantsbymelissa I now live in eatonton, I, thanku a lot 🤗
This was so helpful! With the wet sticks, do you ever take the plastic off to air them, or you keep them like that until you see growth? 💗
I will open them up to check and air out if I see a lot of condensation. They can still rot from little airflow since these cups are so small ☺️
Thank you.
sometimes starting over is just best for the plant :) itll be okay!
Awe what a sin, god love ya! You are my inspiration, love watching your videos! Much love from Nova Scotia🇨🇦
Thank you so much! ☺️💚
Thank you 🥺 Congrats on your new leaf!! 🫶 Plants are amazing!!
I put my Monstera on a moss pole, should I just use a stake? Thank you so much for being real in your videos!
It's up to you! I like using a stake to provide support but a pole can be helpful too. The aerial roots tend to grow straight through a wire pole but if you want to prop in the future having extra roots grow inside of a clear one is nice!
@@plantsbymelissa That makes sense! She seems happy on the pole so I’ll leave her for now.
Healthy plants!
This video was very helpful for me. Do feel your pain though. I have to propagate my albo soon to give to a friend and I'm so nervous.
You got this! Glad it was helpful! It can be scary chopping one since they're more expensive but honestly they do so well rooting in water and really good light! The more you propagate the better you get at them! ☺️💚
@@plantsbymelissa Thanks for the encouragement!
I felt that sigh 😢

While you cutting the stems, just don't cut it straight, give it an angle then chop. end will have more tissues to heal. In my experience, i generally avoid coco peat, used more chunky pumice and orchid bark and leaf mold, monsteras roots are tend to be thick so they don't like to have peat mixed soil. that's why if they catches root rot its very difficult to cure, specially for who don't have tropical climate.
Hi Meilissa, when you say "if your midcut doesn't have an axillary bud it won't grow," do you mean it won't grow roots?
My favorite plant person!!

@@plantsbymelissa 👍😃
Hey! I was wondering if you’ve had any experience cutting back seedlings that have reverted? I have a feeling they will just die but wanted to know 😅
So glad for you that everything looks better and hydrated again, but I wonder if you dont check the color of the growpoint.
That media looks like there isn’t enough air in the media. Using a chunkier mix or LECA may solve your rot issues.
Hope you can give them a new start!it is upsetting I know☹️....
💚🌱🌵☘️💚
I can also sugest bypass pruners for cutting plants. they dont crush the stems, easier and safer to use. Also it doest not have to have an areal root on the node to root as a cutting, from my experience most of my cuttings root not from the areal root.
I haven't heard of bypass pruners, I'll have to look those up! 🫶
I can feel the pain as now, my albo is doing the same 😭😥😓
What bottle of liquid do you put in the moss for before you put the cut small pieces?
How long did it take for you to see growth in the nodes in your cabinet
How are they doing today? Also, you could invert the same style cup and set it on top as a cover and it will allow it to grow. Just wrap the top around the two cup lips and whallah- little greenhouse!!
They're doing amazing! I'm filming a plant update today actually so I will be showing them :)
@@plantsbymelissa Yay!! I’ll be there!!
Thank you! aww yay!! Glad you could find some plant babies to take back with you!!
Very informational.
Don't be sad. Be excited about how many plants you're going to end up with 😃
I feel so much better now and I'm really excited for them all ☺️🫶
Is it okay that during water propagation of monstera the stems go black? The roots are not mushy or anything but it seems unhealthy that the stems are getting black at the cuts.
How do your prevent the leaves from drying/browning?
Thanks for sharing 💚
Thanks for watching! ☺️
What caused the root rot?
While water propagating, should we add fertilizer?
nope! Just tap water and nothing extra. I usually keep them in water for about 6 weeks or so until you get a fist sized root ball then pot up. once they start rooting they take off ☺️
nooo I was hoping it wouldn't come to this:( but sometimes starting fresh is a good thing!
I know 🥺 I wished they never got rot but I'm happy to be starting fresh with them and they look so much happier now 🥰
Did you find the stratum did better than the water alone?
I actually preferred just using water! The stratum worked well but I didn't notice much of a rooting difference and since the stratum is dark I couldn't see the node.
I don’t know if I bought a leaf without an axillary bud I wish someone could help me!
At which point to we change the wetsticks to cups or pot them?
It'll be awhile :) I wouldn't pot them up until they grow a decent root system and a new little leaf first. Some probably won't root until a new leaf forms and roots grow off of it. I'll end up transferring them to a larger pot with moss then once I have enough roots pot them up!
Thank you! I have wetsticks monstera albo coming in the post so this video and comment was very helpful.
Big hugs to you! 🫶🏽 They will thrive even more after that good cut 🤍
Thank you!! 🥰🫶
Consider putting them in Leca
I don't really have experience with leca. I just started using pon and so far so good :)
