Time for a new Super Saiyan transformation which slightly change the shape of my hair and its color! Now let's throw punches at each other for 15 episodes!"_

And thus...This is why Goku sparing Frieza's life on Namek - walking away from the fight when he realized Frieza was going to lose - was the conclusion to Goku's character arc...It's literally the culmination of Goku's training; where Goku understood the lesson that Roshi taught him as a boy... "Never become complacent with your own power; if you believe that you're already the strongest there is, then you'll become lazy and neglect your training." The point of Jackie Chun, was to convey that, "No matter how strong you become, there's always going to be someone out there who is stronger than you. So you have to keep training; keep pushing your limits and become stronger, every single time you fight..." Getting to the top isn't something that you just work for...It's something that you worn to keep. Once you earn it, you have to protect it...Fight for your right to it; it's your claim, defend it. Frieza is someone who was born with great power, inherited from his father. Hell, Frieza is so powerful that he actually had to transform his body to restrain that power, to keep from running amok. And ever since, he was confident that his power was the pinnacle of supreme; the end-all be-all of the entire universe. (Which is why him knowing Beerus makes NO sense.) Frieza is the epitome of what happens when someone becomes complacent with their power - as terrifying as it was at the time. Frieza never trained to improve his skills, or master his power or his technique. He kept it on a leash, but even then, he admitted that going back, and unleashing his power through various forms tended to be unpredictable...he didn't have the best grasp on it. So much so, that when Goku got Frieza up to 100%, despite how powerful the tyrant was...he'd never once in his life trained to adapt his body to that form. Therefore, the strain of maintaining his energy at that height was taking a physical tole on his body. As long as the fight lasted (five minutes), he couldn't have kept that up for much longer... It would've gotten to the point where Goku literally would have wiped the floor with him, to the point where it would have completely reversed their roles; Goku would be the overpowered aggressor who was against a completely powerless opponent. And that's why Goku had to walk away; to (try to) teach Frieza the same lesson that he'd learned, and to let Frieza's incredible pride burn that lesson into his very soul; the shame he'd feel, at realizing how much he had, only to lose it... And thus, Goku had completed his training and truly become the Master... Frieza just wasn't willing to learn... And that's why Goku leaving the fight - and eventually sparing Frieza's life - was NOT stupid, and was actually a pivotal moment in Goku's character arc...
Except Frieza did learn, kinda. First thing he does after getting resurrected? Trains for months to become better because of Goku. Its still suffers from his lack of patience and arrogance as once he reaches his next step he stops, but still it can be said he learned some lesson about power and strength from Goku and even has some begrudging respect for him when they fight in ressurection F/Super.
I think that's a good way of looking at it, I'll have to disagree with the Beerus thin. He's a God, as long as Freeza didn't annoy Beerus, Freeza was free to do what ever he wanted. So as far as mortals goes, Freeza was the pinnacle.
Be that as it may, I can't help but feel like Frieza's knowledge of Beerus' existence, makes his previous boasting as "the strongest in the Universe," completely hollow. My point is, I don't think that Frieza would be as confident or as bold as he was, if he knew there literally was an all-powerful deity out there in the Universe that could literally squash him like a bug. Especially for someone as temperamental as Beerus; Frieza wouldn't dare set one toe out of line for fear of setting him off. Most importantly, ever since Beerus was introduced, not only has it been implied that he gave Frieza permission to destroy planet Vegeta, but he also commissioned him to do it as well. And yet, we know for a fact that Frieza has blown up several planets beyond just Vegeta, and it's not possible that he went to ask Beerus' permission to do them. (Another thing that puzzles me about Beerus is why he is so inexplicably accommodating for Frieza, especially when it comes to doing his job. One would think that a God of Destruction would take so much pride in what they do, that anyone else destroying a planet would be an insult to their superiority. And yet things like the Saiyans, Frieza, and Buu all happened - conveniently while Beerus was asleep.)
Love these moments with the music and Master Roshi speeches in DB are some of the best highlights for me and this is a great example of how great and wise he is and kind for what he did for Nam
One of my favorite moments in Dragon Ball 🐉. The idea Roshi is doing this to keep Goku and Krillin hungry for new challenges is good. And his willingness to help Nam with one dynocap in exchange for a few moments to help keep his cover. I also wish the show had done more cool stuff with the dynocaps. I mean it's seriously awesome having cars, planes, and weapons stowed in tiny capsules. I mean I understand Toriama wanted to focus on fighting but there was so much potential in dynocaps.
Right? ..in today's anime he most likely wouldnt have such a noble reason and would just do it for the heck of it gags but they give him a legit reason ....that's good early storytelling that shows like yu yu hakusho naruto one piece took .. Everything can be a lesson
Thi moment is very impactful. It set the tone for everything that was to come. Imagine if Goku stopped training at this point if he won the tournament. King Piccolo would have won for sure.
They should have done it with them because by the time they they were cuddled and they Powers came to easily they didn't earn it so when they fuse to become Gotenks the personalities became that of a spoiled cocky and arrogant brat that they got their ass whooped within two seconds of fighting Majin Buu
When I was a kid I thought Roshi was a money-grubby party pooper, who rained on Goku's parade. But now I see he just wanted to allow Goku to see his true potential.
never have any of goku's later masters been this devoted enough to make sure goku kept getting stronger kami once he deemed goku ready he sent him off hell he even didn't believe enough in goku's skills to beat piccolo so he entered the tournament himself to beat piccolo. king kai more or less the same as kami taught goku when he needed and sent him off. whis only teaches goku because he sees potential in him and one of his friends feeds him good food and dosent care how strong goku gets as long as its enough to make beerus get off his lazy ass. But master roshi he not only taught goku because he was a powerful kid and his students grandson but also went out of his way to make sure goku would continue to grow stronger even after he surpassed him that's dedication right there not to mention that goku learned his most iconic attack from master roshi too
No the whole thing with Kami entering wasn't cause of that he knew Goku was strong but he knew Goku wouldn't kill Piccolo jr since it would end up killing Kami. And Goku didnt want that so Kami enters so he could take care of Piccolo jr himself. As for King Kai he had to send him off since he was brought back to life so he had no choice. And Whis actually does care about training them he wants them to become great fighters.
Kami never trained Goku to begin with that was all Popo and they didn't keep training because Goku rejected his offer to become Guardian of the Earth and flew off to get married. King Kai on the other hand was Goku's go-to master from Saiyan saga all the way to Battle of Gods.
Jackie Chan's speech is exactly why I loved DB as a kid and started hating everything after Z as an adult. In one dub Roshi said the reason he doesn’t want them to win is because he doesn’t want them to get extremely cocky and think that no one can beat them !
At first, I thought this was dishonest hiding someone's talent from them. But every father should do this with their son. Give them little "shit tests" like Roshi does HERE, so they push themselves BY THEMSELVES, buliding confidence the right way. When they are older, they will never doubt themselves. Othwrwise...you get Goten.
Master Roshi damn that’s deep and WISDOM. Very true once you at the top especially at a very early age in any field…you kinda start losing that spark for sure.
Also Yamcha and Tien as well. They start with Roshi and Gohan then Korin, Kami, and Popo then eventually King Kai, Gregory, and Bubble, and then Whis and Beerus. So far only Goku made it to Beerus and Whis. Eventually at some point they were all replaced by Vegeta.
It's funny to think this concept that Roshi started all those hears ago still persists in the story to this very day. Z, Super and yes, GT all show Goku being challeneged by someone insurmountable only to push harder and rise above his limits. Roshi himself acknowledged in the Tournament of Power that Goku and Krillin taught him that limits should never define him! What an admirable lesson.
@Kureiton if they really wanted to they could've. Piccolo and the humans were still training on Earth when the saiyans arrived and all managed to go from less than 1/3 of the strength of Raditz to stronger than him in a year.
@@nicolasneal204 isn’t like the purpose of training is to get stronger, no matter how? What does training with Kami and Mr. Popo have that you seem disturbed against? You sound as if that’s not considered training.
@@alexanderchristopher6237 People dont train like crazy on their daily basis unlike those who are competing or going to face some sort of challenge. You could be going to the gym for years and have less results than another guy who is training hard nonstop. The z fighters didnt see that much progress before Raditz because there was no need to push themselves like that. so its not considered normal training since their goal was to defeat the new guys not just maintaining.
Damn.. if you think about this, if roshi hadnt done this would goku and krillin really have aspired to be as strong as they are now? also his "death" in dbs was a call back to this speech
its not even that..it changed who they were...they learned theres always someone better and to never doubt their own convictiosn selves and they can break through limits and be better....
Probably. Krillin knew Goku was stronger so he could still strive to surpass Goku. And Goku is a sayayin, its in his blood. When he doesnt have strong opponents around he just competes with himself and trains like hell waiting for someone stronger to surpass.
Most of you here probably already know this. But, for the most part (from my understanding) in the original, master roshi wasn't beating goku so that he wouldn't quit, but so that he wouldn't get a big head. He wanted the boys to understand that there's always someone better out there, and that they should always strive to be better, rather than just expecting to be. A lesson that a lot of people in the real world could use. And one that I don't believe was fully explained in the dub. Again, I'm sure most of you already knew this, but, just felt the need to point it out. He may have even went further into detail on it, before, or after this clip, it's been a while since I've watched it myself so im unsure. Of course I still love the dub. : )
And to this day, goku has still taken this lesson to heart. He still wishes to best himself and go further and further till the end of time, even though he beat jiren, he still wishes to improve himself, I love this series :)
You want to know what would have been awesome if before the tournament of power Goku would try to look for Jackie Chun and then he realizes master roshi was Jackie Chun all along.
Sgt Virus9 oh, lol, that would actually have been a good thing to see, although I think the reason we didn’t get a reference to Jackie chun, is cause of the fact that toriyama can be forgetful sometimes, like with Android 17 and lunch.
Δημήτρης Μπάρδας Well it also helped, but if Goku hadn’t lost in the first tournament, he wouldn’t have thought he was the strongest and didn’t need to do anything, as strong as he was as a kid who’s easily impressionable, he still had to overcome many odds..
I love Master Roshi. He was the perfect Teacher and a little like Goku's and Krillins Dad. You can see with Scences like this why Goku and Krillin cared so much about Roshi in the Tournament of Power.
@@hiddenmaster6062 No Roshi was stronger overall. It was a closer match especially after Rosh used that Kamehameha to destroy the moon which took a lot of his energy. If he didn't do that, Roshi would have had an easier time beating Goku.
I think they had potential to grow as characters because they were so spoiled. Super could have benefited much by using them, but Super being the nostalgia pandering garbage it is, didn't even bother. Perhaps they didn't want to draw SSJ3 because its so hard to animate.
Later Goku wants to fight so many strong fighters that he causes the most powerful being to hold a tournament where entire universes will die if they lose. Thanks Roshi.
Edward Gaines he overestimated his own strengths so he underestimates his opponent exactly like how he underestimated beerus first time frieza resurrection.
Throughout all of a dragon Ball z he never underestimates his opponent. When he let free to power up he knew the risks and consequences and knew that he was too strong to be killed even at full power.
Goku becomes a bit egotistical after he beats Piccolo, so Roshi was right lol. Mr. Popo had to bring him back to earth and kick his ass to get him to train again. So give it up for Roshi but also give it up for Popo and Kami.
What Roshi said was right. They both trained to be stronger since their first tournament. Krillin reached the top as far as human limits can go. For Goku being a Saiyan, his power has no limit and he trained even harder to fight opponents like Raditz, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, and all the way to Beerus, Jiren, and Broly.
What roshi said here holds true in tons of anime today, Volkner from pokemon, Gojo satoru from jjk, etc etc, they all became too good at what they did, and got an ego and had pure boredom

I wish that for the tournament of power Goku still didn’t know who Jackie Chun was and tried to find him to be on the Universe 7 team (with Roshi dressed up as Chun in the tournament)

I mean it would have been fun,
Also, I'm reminded of how Goku could sense "Monaka's" Ki was similar to Beerus's but still didn't put the two together
I love seeing this side of Master Roshi, a wise and compassionate teacher not always the dirty pervert we’re so familiar with.
I miss when Dragon Ball had this kind of heart and soul in its storytelling. Now it is just: _"Hey! A new powerful villain once again threatens the very fabric of the universe! Time for a new Super Saiyan transformation which slightly change the shape of my hair and its color! Now let's throw punches at each other for 15 episodes!"_
Blame the majority of the fandom for not liking the heart and soul in the story
"New recolor transformation"
especially the new arc. Dragonball Super was ok till the Granolah Arc. It is the worst piece of Dragonball in existence. I would rather watch the Bio Broly movie then read this nonsenese again
Yes
you get it, I feel like people only like the planet killers because they can do something like "my dad can beat your dad" sort of petty arguments but with fictional characters. the heart and soul of dragon ball wasn't punching but traveling as a smiling vagrant either alone or with friends it doesn't matter but the thrill of the journey and facing the challenges every land throws at you but not all of them can be swatted by uber stupid god strength. It's kinda why I liked GT, it actually tried to go back to this kind of formula sure with a time limit but the return of a journey and meeting new people in strange lands was a treat to see again and then addressing the overuse of the dragon balls was the cherry on top... then some people got money in their eyes and now the series is a husk that forgot the spirit of the old days
The reason goku kept getting stronger!!
Little did Roshi know that Goku was a full blooded Saiyan, so his thirst for fighting will never cease.
@@stickersdogcat42 Full blooded but with a human like mother. He loves fighting like his father but that rock hit switched him from a bardock clone to a half-half from his dad and mom.

"If you're on the top then there's nothing else to shoot for" i like that line
And thus...This is why Goku sparing Frieza's life on Namek - walking away from the fight when he realized Frieza was going to lose - was the conclusion to Goku's character arc...It's literally the culmination of Goku's training; where Goku understood the lesson that Roshi taught him as a boy...
"Never become complacent with your own power; if you believe that you're already the strongest there is, then you'll become lazy and neglect your training." The point of Jackie Chun, was to convey that, "No matter how strong you become, there's always going to be someone out there who is stronger than you. So you have to keep training; keep pushing your limits and become stronger, every single time you fight..."
Getting to the top isn't something that you just work for...It's something that you worn to keep.
(Which is why him knowing Beerus makes NO sense.)
Frieza is the epitome of what happens when someone becomes complacent with their power - as terrifying as it was at the time.
GanonGhidorah probably saw frieza as a likely candidate for god of destruction or was using him as a excuse to be lazy so he can work less

I mean I understand Toriama wanted to focus on fighting but there was so much potential in dynocaps.

never have any of goku's later masters been this devoted enough to make sure goku kept getting stronger kami once he deemed goku ready he sent him off hell he even didn't believe enough in goku's skills to beat piccolo so he entered the tournament himself to beat piccolo. king kai more or less the same as kami taught goku when he needed and sent him off. whis only teaches goku because he sees potential in him and one of his friends feeds him good food and dosent care how strong goku gets as long as its enough to make beerus get off his lazy ass. But master roshi he not only taught goku because he was a powerful kid and his students grandson but also went out of his way to make sure goku would continue to grow stronger even after he surpassed him that's dedication right there not to mention that goku learned his most iconic attack from master roshi too
whis did the same thing with the whole monaka thing
It was actually Beerus' idea but yeah overall same concept
Kami admits he taught goku nothing
The characters got *too strong.* That sense of adventure and innocence was lost everytime there was galaxy level doom on the horizon. Back in these early days it felt like defeat meant there was just another plateau to reach and it was fun.

0:46 crazy how Rossi already had this notion when they were young and then Goku grows up eager to battle people who are stronger than him
At first, I thought this was dishonest hiding someone's talent from them. But every father should do this with their son. Give them little "shit tests" like Roshi does HERE, so they push themselves BY THEMSELVES, buliding confidence the right way.
When they are older, they will never doubt themselves. Othwrwise...you get Goten.
Don't forget Trunks
Master Roshi damn that’s deep and WISDOM. Very true once you at the top especially at a very early age in any field…you kinda start losing that spark for sure.
Aw man Nam's reaction to free water is very sad when you think hard enough about it
Goku and Krillin were so lucky to have this wise master.
And after goku beat piccolo, he slagged of training and got killed the moment a bigger fish came to the pond
@Kureiton if they really wanted to they could've. Piccolo and the humans were still training on Earth when the saiyans arrived and all managed to go from less than 1/3 of the strength of Raditz to stronger than him in a year.

You could be going to the gym for years and have less results than another guy who is training hard nonstop. Probably. Krillin knew Goku was stronger so he could still strive to surpass Goku. And Goku is a sayayin, its in his blood. When he doesnt have strong opponents around he just competes with himself and trains like hell waiting for someone stronger to surpass.
