Currently re-watching DragonBall. Middle of King Piccolo arc. Totally agree about Roshi. He deserves a lot of respect for what he's done for the Z fighters. Especially Goku and Krillin. Besides his teachings, he gave them a home and a sense of family again to a couple of orphaned boys. And you can tell that they love and respect him like a father.
I'm going through re-watching everything myself. I've done this several times but always in English. I've always had to force myself through DragonBall to get to Z. Even then I skimmed through it. Then when super came out I had to watch it with subtitles at first. I'm glad I had to watch it that way because I never would've done it on my on. I'm actually enjoying watching all of DragonBall. There's just something that's lost in translation.
When Roshi gives the speech to Nam about why he entered the tournament, so Goku and Krillin realise there's always someone stronger out there, I cried the second and third time watching the series as a kid. To this day, that's my favourite scene in the entire series. Jackie Chun is the catalyst for Goku's entire philosophy he'll carry for the rest of the series.
This is really high quality, i’m surprised this is coming from someone with only 100 subscribers. Honestly inspiring as someone starting anime/manga content myself. you earned a sub
Thanks so much, that means a lot! This is actually a second channel for me so I’ve been doing UA-cam for a while but it is tough getting a new channel started, best thing to do is just start!
Remember that at the start of Dragon Ball, Muten Roshi was the current world savior and a well respected martial artist. It's silly how as the years went by, Toriyama and people forgot about this fact. I think it all went south after he has died against Piccolo Daimao. This is where T said "fuck it, we don't need him anymore" and he was forever known as a pervert old man, a common trope in Japan at the time. But then again, T did this to the newly introduced character, Tenshinhan, who was supposed to be a walking powerhouse, able to learn techniques as other fighters demonstrated them before him. Yet was completely useless in the very next arc and embarrassed himself against a low level Daimao egg and did nothing plot wise up until Semi-Perfect Cell where he managed to hold him off with his kihoko out of the blue. Back on track, Muten Roshi was a role model and deserves mad respect.
With Roshi it was simpler. He trained with Karin (korin in USA) 300 years before Goku did. He'd seen his master Mutaito die to King Piccolo 100 years before he shown up again. He lived those 100 years to guard the secrets that could stop a demon king. He had only 5 students on scout and only 2 he trusted to take up the fight (Old Gohan and Goku) before Piccolo comes back. After that, his lifes work and honorable duty was done. He already complained in the manga that getting stronger was nearly impossible at his age before fighting the 22nd Martial Arts Tournament and considered passing on his work to jext generation after it.
Roshi was proven right at the beginning of Z. If Goku had kept training after winning the battle againts piccolo jr., he may done better in his fight with Raditz
True, but then he would die against Vegeta and the Namekians would be erased by Freeza. Toriyama has a kind of "nothing happens by chance" approach to destiny in his mangas that helps him improvise the long term withiut worrying on the short term because in the end he only wants to tell jokes and have cool explosions 😂
@@RadeticDaniel that is true 1. If Goku survived his Fight againts Raditz, he wouldn't have learned Kaioken and Spirit Bomb. 2. If he wasn't badly injured in his battle againts Vegeta, he wouldn't have train in 100×earth's gravity. 3. If he didn't stay dead in his battle againts cell, he may have never discovered super saiyan 3 or knew about fusion So in the end, it all works out
@@j.ronnygibson I'd say he wouldn't train in x100 gravity regardless of beig heavily injured because his idea of gravity training was to match the fast progress he had on King Kai's planet as well. People say Toriyama's writing is lazy and that his "hand of destiny" approach is a symptom of it. However it takes some care to close all other paths and make what you have now relevant. The constant upscaling of power is the true symptom of his approach as he needs that to show no other path would've worked
But in thoughtful words, Master Roshi is a great and well written character, dragon ball's writing has been great to experience for the first time. I didn't grow up the series like most others, I'm watching for the first time as a 19 year old. (I'm bout 130 esps into Z) The original dragon ball is amazing is really good and I'm glad to find someone who agrees.
How epic would it have been for Jackie Chun to enter the Tournament of Power instead of Masher Roshi? The writing in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is greatly superior than that of Super. Roshi is now reduced to nothing more than a predator and it's sad 😢
Would not make sense. "Jackie Chun" would not have any reason to know things about Saiyans, Namekians, etc. Roshi does know about them. Jackie Chun returning would lead to Goku questioning things.
@@SgvSth In the manga whis said Roshi was using a form of martial art similar to ultra instinct against Jiren. Perhaps It could be interesting to see Roshi get some secret training with whis in the room of spirit and time. He would return in another martial arts tournament in a hidden identity to best goku and have him keep striving for greater heights
@@erickellar5867 Sure, but that isn't my point at all. The problem is that Jackie Chun didn't appear in the later half of Dragon Ball because Roshi retired his alternate persona. That means that to Goku, Jackie should not know a good chunk of that Roshi learned. If fact, Jackie last appearance was when Goku was believed to be human or mostly human, which Roshi knows that Goku is a Saiyan.
Does this need to be explained? This isn't subtext, it's just text. Roshi monologues to himself as to why he enters the tournament, several times in the anime.
For a lot of people whi started on DBZ or young viewers who started on DBS, this may be needed. Og DB animation has too much filler and manga isn't as widely available.

He was like Goku's second grandfather.

This is why it ain't a simple oh martial arts parody Jackie Chan thing he thought what would Jackie do make it into a manga and anime story
The way they treat Tenshinhan and Roshi in Super fills me with so much pain

Big up NKAnime
The line Roshi has about the ego is very relevant to the current champ Hercule.
yeah it's a shame hercule never had a master to teach him humility.

4:12 Bro same
That scene is criminally underrated!
4:29 yes absolutely
Its gives nothing except feeding our egos
Kami: «Goku, you 're fortunate to 've had such an excellent teacher»!
Goku: «Noone is as wise or as goofy»!
3:00 yeah Jackie Chun begins Tien's redemption arc. Power of unlearning is valuable. And with Roshi, know when to retire.

also Ten is prob one of my fav characters, I love watching him learn and grow and become who he really is
As much as I love DBZ, I love the original Dragon Ball more. So much character development and great moments.
We never learn Roshis real name, Roshi is just a title. It's always been my head canon Jackie Chun was his real name but he frames it like it's fake.
Much love thank you #supportdbzgen

thank you🙏
I didn’t like the weird perverted humor when it came to Master Roshi, but damn I loved when Roshi got serious or when he was Jackie chun.
Subbed
thanks bro🙏
If I were to rank Jackie Chan parodies Chun is number 1 all the time
Peak niall
LETS GO
Why did you leep talking about master roshi in a video about jackie chun
They are never on screen at the same time
2024
Goku learned nothing from this experience. He went out of his way to convince Gohan that he was the strongest in the universe at the age of 12
But Jackie chun isn't roshi I mean you literally see roshi in the stands idk what you're talking about
Does this need to be explained? This isn't subtext, it's just text. Roshi monologues to himself as to why he enters the tournament, several times in the anime.
so we can’t talk about things we like cuz it isn’t subtext? Lmao
The Level of Stupidity
we got folks out here selling their bath water and you're over here trying to goon a man for making a piece of Master Roshi. Get outta here.
