I think that's a solid interaction. Vegeta's had some brutal lessons in not underestimating enemies. (Cell comes to mind.) He knows Roshi is dangerous even if their power levels are vastly different, he's not going to make the mistake Kakarot might have of not going in full force. In a way, it's the greatest complement Vegeta can pay to Roshi, to take him seriously as a threat.

The Kamehameha was originally Roshi's technique, perfected over several decades of training. Goku learned the importance of basic, constant training and the ability to channel chi from Roshi. Even decades later, it's obvious that Roshi's original lessons have stayed with Goku.
