Delorean is like a real human. It has it's flaws but when you get to spend more time with it the more you like it and enjoy it. And i really love it. Mine goal is to buy one someday.
Exactly, the attraction to the Delorean is not rooted in it's quarter mile time. That's for 1 dimensional thinkers. You obviously have to think 4th dimensionally about these cars.
If they'd had to get the automatic model up to 88 in that short of a distance, so it'd jump back in time before hitting them... It would have been a lot shorter movie :\

One of the biggest problem with this car is its engine, the infamous PRV 90-degree V6. This engine was the result of a joint venture between Peugeot, Renault and Volvo (hence the PRV name) in the very early 1970s. At this time, all of these manufacturers wanted bigger, more modern engines, so they decided to put their resources together to design a shared platform. I insist: the PRV was a *platform* not an *engine*. Well, not exactly. The idea was to share a *common design* between a V6 and a V8 in order to cut costs - same cylinder displacement, same design, *same 90-degree V shape*. Therein lies the rub... while a V8 is naturally balanced at a 90-degree angle, a V6 is naturally balanced at a 60-degree angle. There are ways to deal with the structural issues that come with a 90-degree V6 such as having a different crankshaft and/or crankpin design, adding balancer shafts. However, Peugeot, Renault and Volvo decided *not* to do that... so the V6 PRV is naturally unbalanced and vibrates a lot. This was improved in later years: the design of the crankshaft was changed... but it was probably too late. That being said, many people say the PRV V6 engine is junk, and it really isn't. It was really robust and had a surprisingly long career (until 1998!). And the latest, improved versions were actually much better than the original engine from 1974. The PRV was even turbocharged on the Alpine A610 (250hp, 350Nm/258ft-lb torque) and other cars as well. However, it's not a *great* engine either... no one really loves the thing. What happened to the planned PRV V8? 1973 and 1979 oil crisis. So in the end, the V8 version of the PRV platform, the whole reason why a 90-degree angle was chosen, was stillborn... Now, this idea in itself isn't stupid, quite the opposite! It makes a lot of sense and I can work great... if done right. Mercedes did exactly this with its M112 (V6) / M113 (V8) engines. The 90-degree M112 V6 is a really good engine. But Mercedes did it right and added balancer shafts from the start...
Bulb in the drivers door doesn't work. [Edit] In fact, none of the bulbs in the drivers door work, so it's wiring, not just a bulb. [Edit 2] They started working again! Pretend you never saw it.
The contact in the body is probably sticky, its just a little plastic rod with a spring behind it that pushes against the door when you close it to turn the lights off.
It's a Peugeot Renault Volvo V6. (PRV) It was a V8 on the drawing board, but the first fuel crisis in 1971 made it loose two limbs. All the volvo 245 have a trunk board made of plywood. It's strong and light, common for this era.
What can I say... it was built in Belfast in the 70's 80's, a time when the Delorean wasn't the only thing made in Belfast that blew up without warning!! Coincidentally we also built an unsinkable ship which had a starring role in a popular movie.
I had similar issues with my DeLorean. It hated cold starting and took FOREVER to warm up as well. I loved the thing but I had to sell it and then I got an NSX instead. I do kind of miss it, but I definitely do not miss all the issues. Especially with the fuel system, which I basically had to replace the entirety of after it stranded me multiple times.
Yep. Replaced my entire fuel system 10 years ago for $1500 and it still fires up on the first crank every single time. Idles at butter smooth 700. Mmmmmm. NSX is on my bucket list. I'd adore driving one. Have an MR2 now to scratch the mid engine itch on the cheap.
The condition of the body work and interior is amazing. I think you made an excellent buy there, literally only downside (now that it is fixed) is that it is an automatic.
It cost you thousands because you were paying for Wizard's learning curve on the car. Wizard seems like a awesome and very capable guy, however had you taken it to an experienced DeLorean mechanic your bill would have been thousands and thousands less. The automatics were terrible all-around. I've rebuilt quite a few of the auto transmission computers, and in fact designed an built a solid state replacement. DMCH has a similar version available as well. The swap-out takes ~30min and would have saved you a ton of time and money. The cold start issue is a 20 cent O ring fix that takes 10min. The doors take about an hour, maybe two to align if needed. Speedo angle drive is a simple fix, as it the fuel system and fuel gauge. These are all things an experienced DeLorean mech would have recognized immediately. That said...I don't want my comment to sound like overt criticisms but rather some experienced feedback. love your channel. I think you guys are awesome and please keep up the good work. :)

Your story telling abilities have evolved so much over the years and today's video showcased that like no other. Congrats on all that you've done, and enjoy the hell out of that DELOREAN! Always look forward to your videos!
Makes sense what Hoovie said about the interior being really spacious, John DeLorean was 6'4". Can't remember what documentary I saw about the DeLorean, but they made a huge point in the design phase that the car had to be roomy and comfortable for a man of his stature, it couldn't be some compromised ergonomic mess like a Lamborghini Countach.
It had to have stainless panels, have gullwing doors, accommodate someone of jzd's height, fit golf clubs and be mid or rear engine. Those were his big musts when the car was being designed/engineered
Excellent job with this video. Self deprecating humor, truthfulness about car buying decisions, and not self aggrandizing about his collection of cars. A refreshing video that makes me want to go check out his other offerings. Thanks for an enjoyable and real video.
And now that DMC motors is back open in Texas you can get pretty much whatever you need for it. Keep that car. It is only going to appreciate in value. I’m proud of you on this one
From my understanding they're not technically making "new" deloreans. They just have a massive warehouse full of unused parts that they use to build more deloreans.
Unfortunately, they sold out back in 2012 of the NOS builds. Today, they have to fab brand new bodies and it costs WELL over the original $40,000 they sold the NOS builds for.
DMC is now in Houston and owned by Stephen Wynn. They restore original DMC 12s and supply parts to those of us who need them. They have a website, DeLorean.com and you can find their history and dispel all the myths by going to the website. Better yet, schedule a visit and you can tour their shop and warehouse.
It is NOT the Delorean Factory...the ORIGINAL factory is Long shut down and gone forever...all it is...is the Company that BOUGHT up all the Delorean Inventory from Consolidated International...who ACTUALLY bought out the entire delorean inventory...they TRY to act like they are the Continuation of the factory...which they are not..if they build cars...they STILL have to use a EXISTING Vin Number...they have yet to make a NEW Vin Number Delorean...
@@claudelandi510 Yes, you are right. This is the new Delorian assembly plant. They don't manufacture anything at the Houston location, just pull from old stock and build Deloreans.

I owned a Delorean for 12 years. Maintained it well and drove it to events far from home. Never had any issues. Sold it for a good price. I can find you lots of “high quality” cars like classic Mercedes or so and declare it is a mess. Most people misunderstand the car as a sporty racecar. It is a touring car. Glad to see it is mentioned at the end. It is way cheaper than most other exotics and man, heads turn where ever you go. If it were not to be banned from the roads here with those 🔥💥🤯😤 EMZ zones I would still have it.
I remember reading an article on the Texas Delorean Motor Company, and remember their experts said that $35k was the sweet spot for the marque. Most running examples sold at about that price, and if you found a cheaper one that needed work, you could expect to end up spending a total of $35k for the car and repairs in the end
I own one of these cars and every time i go into the garage i just sit and stare and smile. Ive been through alot of crap. its a very weird car. But before i even had it i had this weird imagined relationship with it. I had read about them, john delorean, where it was made but when it was delivered when i finally bit the bullet and bought one it was unreal. Volvo always had the most powerful version of this engine and it was 175 bhp in its later1988 form, what you have is the older Volvo version with those inlet manifolds which was 145 bhp in UK,yours is probably laden with USA emission equipment. Renault kept this version going after volvo dumped it after they brought out their own straight 6 205 bhp 3 litre in 1990,Renault then added 4 valve heads and used a turbo on the Renault Alpine. You are a very wealthy man, why not use all the best bits from the later Renault engine and make this car go? The Volvo 760 with your "slow" engine was one of the quickest cars in the world from 30 to 50 mph in just 2.8 seconds, quicker than the V12 Jaguar !
I still remember the story of Johnny Carson driving his then brand new Delorian the street where it broke down. Story goes he got out threw the keys to someone and went and bought a Corvette... Don’t know if it’s true but it sounds legitimate.
Nope. I got in it, thought what a piece of junk, tried the keys, didn't start, and threw them at the next guy I saw. He looked pretty happy, I walked away, never looked back, figured that was as happy as he was ever gonna be with that car, figured that was how I'd like to remember him.
You should have bought a stick shift. It's pretty easy to change a clutch compared to the problems of an automatic. The 0-60 times back in those days on manuals versus sticks were usually a big difference too (e.g. My first car was a 1988 Cavalier Z24 and it was at LEAST 2 seconds faster to 60 with the 5-speed, about 8 seconds compared to 10.x) and stick shifts are a hell of a lot more fun to drive. The Delorean in Back to the Future was a stick as well so more points there for having a matching car. Get a turbo kit for it. It helps with the lack of acceleration. There was a guy I knew that shoehorned a Dodge HEMI into that thing. It went FAST then.... :D
You can put in spectacular extras. Make the doors open with remote control and/or let it make the gorgeous sound that is done in the film. DMC center cap in the steering wheel. And more subtle little lovely things

Worked for Bill Kobach Buick, Topeka Kansas in 1983 and we were also the Delorean dealer. We could not give these cars away. I can't tell you how many test drives I went on that people were so disappointed in performance they bought something else. The entire new and used sales staff ended up driving Deloreans because there was a program for demo cars that you wouldn't lose as much money when they finally sold.
"But not now..." yeah Hoovie, I hear you. Been there myself. Bought my second DeLorean back in 95 for about what you paid. Have spent that much since then on it, but with all the drawbacks, I still don't want to let it go.
Thanks for the info! Helped a lot...

That engine was co-produced by Peugeot Renault and volvo it barely holds together stock. Probably best not to.
There was a Renault version with a turbo, and the Calloway like they say...

No, it needs the later 24v PRV.... or the 2.5 V6 Turbo out of the Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo.
@@TheSaabClinicUK just because the french invented the car, it doens´t mean they understand it what so ever.
French cars are the pure evil.
@@blubb7711 So easy to read someone that does not have a clue what they are talking about. Ive had cars from just about every manufacturer. Literally lost count once i went over 50 cars. And the best car ive ever owned, well thats a Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo. One of the most under rated cars in the world. Even better than my F355.
Tdi would be nice none of that EcoBoost crap
@@TheSaabClinicUK Have you ever seen a regular french car? They are terrible, even worse than german cars.
Driver side door bulbs were off at the beginning of the video and on at the end... add another couple hundred bucks in the weeezards pockets to sort your electrical.
Those dang door switches corrode so easily. This is a common issue, the ring terminal connection they use to ground the switch goes bad.
Andrew Thompson you need a girlfriend.
@@SonnyGTA I'd settle for some renewed work ethic... I really should be working right now.
You’re missing your flux capacitor.
Honestly, the whole time machine kit kinda ruins the car.

You should have modified it when it was in the 1800's, it would have been alot cheaper....
I had a 83 5 speed. It wasn’t fast but handled nice. John Deloreans attorney was my dads. My dad called me one day back in 1989 and I went to his attorneys office. John was there and signed my glove box door. I have a bunch of pictures from that day. Very nice guy. At that time he was wanting to build another car.
I think you should go all the way and get the back to the future mod done, after all its your money im spending.
is that sucker FINANCIAL?????????????????
Probably Not my name videobob is this your alt account???
"But not now..." yeah Hoovie, I hear you. Been there myself. Bought my second DeLorean back in 95 for about what you paid. Have spent that much since then on it, but with all the drawbacks, I still don't want to let it go. Both of ours are worth at least what we have in them, so you didn't do bad at all in the final analysis. Yes, without the "failure " of DMC. The cocaine trial, and the Back to the Future movies it wouldn't have quite the appeal. But there is no experience like owning one of these. You can have a car that will outperform this ten times over..but no one will want thier picture taken with it either. If they even care. Just think, if John Z. Had succeeded further, worked out the bugs in this car from the start and a form of it was still in production today, it would be just another car...like a Tesla.
At least deloreans don't think themselves to death like tesla's
Agreed @Mitch Salawine. I have zero intention of letting mine go even with the drawbacks.
When i take mine to car shows, i cant even go enjoy any other peopels cars because i get mobbed to death. It was cool at first as i love educating people about the car, but between people touching and trying to sit in or on it, the never ending fingerprints on the stainless and me arguing with people over the history, facts about the car they have wrong or incorrect info about john delorean, i give up. So now I just take my esprit or my miata to shows instead, people can be buttheads, bwuahaha
I also agree, the Delorean is indeed one of the most beautiful cars made to date, 100%. And this coming from a Supra owner😉
I got a Celica by myself and yes, besides both cars (supra and Little Sisters Celica) the Delorean is indeed one of the most beautiful cars ever made 🤟🏼
yeah man.. I wanted supra but now I want DeLorean more xD just a cool looking car
20 yrs ago I was on I-5 Northbound in Olympia, WA. I was shocked to get passed by a Delorean that had a tow-truck conversion on the back. I'll never forget it. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen.
Ironically, the initial appeal of the DeLorean was the low maintenance stainless steel body, a 'forever' car.
Donald MacLeay that makes sense I guess. The stainless steel body is really sharp and I wonder why more cars haven’t followed in it’s footsteps.
@@karmatt3098 I believe a big part of the Tesla's appeal is fewer trips to a dealer for repairs. Don't underestimate the public's hatred of auto dealerships. Here in NJ the dealer disregard of the customer is palpable.
I got my own Delorean now! 😁 (It’s a 1:24 scale BTTF 2 model with movable flying wheels) 🤓😁🥰
