Tyler was there a point when you thought about a transplant engine and transmission to fit, I gather from watching the DeLorean movie that he mix matched parts and specification parts. There was one in the UK that i knew of and to sell it the dealer ended up giving it a Resale Red paint job work that one out.
DeLorean tail light boards all need re-work. They are printed circuit boards that have the contacts for the bulbs riveted to the copper pads. The rivet to pad connection gets corroded. Use a high wattage soldering iron to flow solder onto the rivet and that overcomes the corrosion.
Great video! I’m so glad you don’t live in Cali. With that new exhaust you get pulled over all the time for the noise violations. Happy this one worked out for you!
I noticed the amber or red light on the inside of the driver door is not lighting up like the one on the passenger side when open, you might wanna add that to the list too!

The only problem left is that you still have a Auto/trans. More problem in the long run waiting for you down the road... But that also means more content so maybe that's not that bad after all
If he installs an external transmission cooler and he managed to get his mechanic to install an aftermarket shift controller that transmission should last hundreds of thousands of miles.
The garage addition is looking good. That has to be exciting for you, I know it would be for me. Glad you actually are coming out in the black on the DeLorean, over all it's not a great car but it does have some cool features and all that really matters is that you like it.

It's already looking shabby and tired as fuck, and not classic exotic status at all. No offence. Time has passed it by, ironically. This thing looks like my former 83 Jetta and my kitchen sink had an oversized baby.
The DeLorean 3 speed automatic transmission was also used for a while in Jeeps while Renault had a stake in American Motors back in early 80's. Once Chrysler got involved the shift 'computer' (a high failure item) was actually a dealer part available from Chrysler.
More correctly it has a Peugeot, Renault & Volvo engine - PRV 2.8litre. A jointly developed engine which was used in the top of the line Peugeots, Renault & Volvos of that time - mid 70's to mid 80's.
Make sure you heat the garage. Also, Install floor drains. And finally, a hot / cold hose bib. I absolutely LOVE hand washing a car in my garage wearing swim shorts when it is -10f outside.
You should get the stainless redone.. there are shops that can re-sand the grain of the stainless to brighten it up.. and have the wheels cleaned up too!
i think this video was just about major repairs to get it road worthy again, it hasn't even be properly cleaned and detailed yet. he does mention additional issues that still need to be done like the air conditioning doesn't work due to a leak but figured they were not worth addressing for the sake of this video.
Problem with the "tail Light Bulb" is NOT the tail Light Bulbs themselves...that is most likely OK...it's the Damn printed Circuit Board...that the taillight bulbs rest in...they get corrosion(circuit boards don't like long term exposure to the elements) and they then have a bad contact...as you can see.
That's why the earlier, hand-wired point-to-point wired DeLoreans are so much more robust. Plus the vacuum tube ignition system, it gives the driving response a way more analog feel. They shouldn't have changed that.
A little expence extra for a new lightbulb in the left door, If you did'nt realize in had expired. Nice to see this icon car from the movies come to the screen again.
I can see some heat damage to the front between the bonnet and grill caused by the headlights. I don't have a DMC-12, but a friend does. Apparently this happens when people leave the lights on whilst the engine is warming up. The headlights get hot (no air moving over them) which transfers to the plastic, causing it to sag. Waiting at traffic lights with the headlights on is fine, but don't idle for a long time with the lights on, for example when warming the engine up. Or swap to cooler running LEDs (get warm white colour temperature IMHO).
Car was a flop, even with the movie adding 300% to the resale value. John delorean was known for badass muscle cars with GM like the Pontiac gto, then he starts his own company and puts a garbage economy Renault engine in an exotic sports car lol.
IMO the car and Mr Delorean were a victim of bad timing. This thing came out in 1981, right in the middle of a bad recession, right after the 2nd gas crunch. Really if this car had come out in 1985-1986ish, the economy was a whole lot better, I think it would have sold. Also by that time they'd figured out fuel injection, horsepower was back. Something like a fuel injected 302 V8 Mustang motor in the DeLorean would have been a riot, actually reliable, and would have helped keep costs down.
As Aaron said. If this thing came out in 1986, the fuel injection would of been better and likely in my opinion being he did work for GM.. could of pulled some strings to throw a turbo 3.8 or 4.3.. things could of gone better for the Delorean.
Huh, that's why the sound reminded me of a car my dad once owned (Renault Alpine A310)... It's the same engine, but in that Renault it sounded way faster
It works well enough to last 150 years or so, and it makes it easy to retrofit wiring and plumbing and ventilation and insulation. Cheaper than other materials too.
DeLoreans are terrible cars. They have V6s that make just over 100hp. They are unreliable. Their gas mileage is terrible. Sales were so bad that the company went bankrupt. The only reason people buy these now is because of Back to the Future.
The fact that they are a cliché from the cheesy movie trilogy ensures that I'd never own one. Never wanted a Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am or a Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino either. lol.
Also, brushed stainless steel body, gullwing doors, and gorgeous badass Giugiaro design, all making up the incredibly cool image, along with the movies of course. It could be a piece of crap car technically, but it'll still grab attention everywhere, and bring smiles to faces, and that's what matters with hobby cars. But anyway, they're over 35 years old now, and most of them still working, even with some faults. It's not that bad, just needs some love.
Owned mine going on 19 years. Not going to win any races, but it wins hearts. Showing up to an autistic child's BTTF birthday party, giving them a moment of peace and joy, ...that's what Deloreans are about. Bringing people joy. My V8 Audi S5 will do over 175mph and 60 under 5 seconds. Still. Can't even begin to hold a candle to the shear amount of joy the Delorean provides. Again, that's what a car like this is all about. And if anyone knocks the Delorean for speed or reliability, that's fine. But, you'll have to hold the lion's share of beloved classics to the same criticism. You don't buy an old Vette or Mustang because they're fast and reliable. A 2019 minivan will destroy most classics in both categories. But which would bring you more joy? A minivan that's faster and more reliable? Or a bitchin' old Thunderbird that reeks of oil, leather, and gas? All about perspective.
In all fairness Hoovie, I must be nuts too. The DeLorean will always have a special place in my heart because even now, it's like NOTHING else on the roads... ♥
Like he cares about looking good. That's the appeal of this channel, his self deprecating humour about how he's an idiot and upside down on half the shit he buys.
I was in high school in the mid 80s. Some time probably 1984. I was at a Chevy dealership (Capital Chevrolet Nashville). They had a corvette and a Deloren on the showroom floor. I sat in both. I remember the sales price of both being within a $100 of each other. $12k and I don’t recall how much over 12 it was.
You in the right ball park for the cost of the car. People in the Delorean community say if you by a car for the price you did expect to double the number to have a really good runing car. I would look in to Chaning all the lights Doors tail lights and turn signals in to LED lights there are Kits out there for the car. If you want more power there are updates you can do to the engine to get some more power out of it. Or You could get a Stage II or Stage III engine from DMC Houston to give it that extra power you would like.
The DeLorean has a factory relay that gently dims the interior lights to off when you close all the doors. Installing LED replacement bulbs negates this effect. If one doesn't care then that's fine. If he goes the LED route, you can replace all of the instrument cluster and climate control panel with LED which will keep the panels from deforming under the heat of an incandescent bulb. Just remember to NEVER replace the charging/alternator warning light with an LED because the charging system relies on the specific resistance of the filament in that tiny bulb to have the alternator work properly. Probably the number one thing he should be doing electrical is modifying the headlight switch to operate a relay instead of how it is factory and a switch routing the entire electrical load of the exterior illumination through a plastic push button. They melt and are unobtainable last I looked.
DMC was bought out and now the huge inventory of NOS parts is in a factory in Texas where they plan to build around 300 brand new 1982 Deloreans for around $100K a piece! There sure are a number of grand old luxury barges I would love to be able to buy a brand new example of but the Delorean is not on my list. That is a very cool opportunity though!
lol Everyone is commenting on the brake light. It's not the bulb. Its the circuit board. They make a 24K gold plated upgrade for that to prevent the separation that leads to the tail lights going on and off. Wait until the trailing arm bolts break and puts the car sideways on the highway. Deloreans need lots of small upgrades to make them everyday drivers and this car has seen few, if any.

This exercise was nothing more than an ego trip by an underfunded engineer.
Huh, that's why the sound reminded me of a car my dad once owned (Renault Alpine A310)... It's the same engine, but in that Renault it sounded way faster
imagine a world where this car came a v8 standard
Always amazed over the cheap build quality....all wood
It works well enough to last 150 years or so, and it makes it easy to retrofit wiring and plumbing and ventilation and insulation. Cheaper than other materials too.
DeLoreans are terrible cars. They have V6s that make just over 100hp. They are unreliable. Their gas mileage is terrible. Sales were so bad that the company went bankrupt. The only reason people buy these now is because of Back to the Future.
V6
The fact that they are a cliché from the cheesy movie trilogy ensures that I'd never own one. Never wanted a Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am or a Starsky and Hutch Gran Torino either. lol.
MrKEMills well people like back to the future so they like the DeLorean too...
It might be terrible, but that's why I like mine hah. It attracts more attention than a new Lambo at car meets. Plus mine is turbocharged. :)
My favorite car youtuber! Been with hoovie from the get. Ill be watching untill the madness ends
Sell it before it blows up.
Tyler, have you ever thought of just hiring the car wizard and paying him $100,000 per year salary? I'm pretty sure it would save you money.
And after all that you are still left with a DeLorean....hmmm
Sounds like Randy huh auto action rebuilds
And a broken brakelight
In all fairness Hoovie, I must be nuts too. The DeLorean will always have a special place in my heart because even now, it's like NOTHING else on the roads... ♥
The purpose of this video is to make Tyler look good with a win while his M5 is becoming a larger and uglier money pit.
Like he cares about looking good. That's the appeal of this channel, his self deprecating humour about how he's an idiot and upside down on half the shit he buys.
The old girl running pretty good Hoodie, love the channel bro, keep the vids rollin
Only thing cheaper would be his wife at a Vietnamese massage parlor
I was in high school in the mid 80s. Some time probably 1984. I was at a Chevy dealership (Capital Chevrolet Nashville). They had a corvette and a Deloren on the showroom floor. I sat in both. I remember the sales price of both being within a $100 of each other. $12k and I don’t recall how much over 12 it was.
Holy crap! That's the 1985 Bar and Arcade, Maple and Seneca! I go there from time to time.
Awesome! Great update, thanks for keeping us in the loop! 👍
Every time there's a new video from Hoovie I get happy :-)
Such an awesome car! Should get Doug to do one of his house tours when it’s done
