How is it possible that these two cars have never been reviewed... side by side? Another brilliant idea for a video. Thanks. (As a Canadian- I always thought Manhattan was in New York State. Who would’ve ever ‘thunk’).
The Bricklin, being a '75 with the Ford 351W only had 175hp, whereas the early '74s had a 220hp AMC 360. If you had one of the 150 or so Bricklins with a stick, I think the results of the drag race would be different.
Except it's garbage. The SV-1 was on par in performance with the Corvette Stingray and is consistently 2-3 seconds faster than the DeLorean 0-60. This video was completely set up.
I have a mechanic whose bread and butter is Volvos. Imagine my surprise when one day he had a DeLorean on the lift, but upon reflexion it made sense since it uses the same engine as the Volvo 760 (plus he likes working on unusual cars and the DeLorean has the advantage that all parts are readily available). Regarding the Bricklin, when I was in high school in Montreal in the mid-70s, one of our teachers drove a Peugeot which wasn't particularly reliable as a result of which she would every so often get a lift from her brother, a well-known journalist and man-about-town, in his brand-new Bricklin.
I think you need to drive my Bricklin. There's something wrong with that one if it can't outrun a Delorean. The Bricklin was tested by Autoweek and it outperformed the 1975 Corvette in acceleration handling and breaking. Most Bricklins have been fitted with faster more reliable air powered doors and air powered headlights. That's the problem with all original Bricklins they need a few upgrades to make them a car you can drive all day. The upgrades don't take away from the originality it just makes them better. Once again I invite you to drive my Bricklin. 😎
My dad briefly had an early Bricklin with the AMC 360 engine, and loved that car. He came from a Chevy family and was able to compare it to a 327 powered early C3 Corvette, and says the Bricklin was much faster. Unfortunately most Bricklins were later models with emissions-choked engines and that meant it never could get a reputation for performance.

They would barely make a dent and destroy another car. but if you were in an emergency situation, who couldn't escape. The company went bankrupted, but I love how they could hold up in an accident.
My dad and his brothers used to flip cars in the 80s, one of which was a white AMC-powered Bricklin. My dad loved the car and says they were all stunned that it was faster than a 327 C3 Corvette. Unfortunately, as a flip car he wasn't able to keep it.
My friend Pat has a white AMC 360 Bricklin. His dad bought it in Florida in the early 90’s and Pat drove it home to Wichita. I wonder if it was the same one?
A good running Bricklin should easily run away from a DeLorean. The two cars weighed about the same and the Bricklin had much more power than the wimpy French V6
I find that most people who say a DeLorean is slow have never actually driven one. I own one and I can unequivocally tell you that it has a lot of pep to it, especially the manual. Even I was surprised when I first got behind the wheel.
The Bricklin is a better looking car, IMO. I like the automatic doors, and the finish cannot be permanently scratched. In addition, the front and rear bumpers collapse on impact which both preserves the car and the driver.
Way ahead of its time. You look at some of the other cars coming out in the early-mid 70's and it's easy to see why people initially went nuts over the Bricklin. It's also hard to not atleast respect their attempts at innovation, not just with styling but with the safety measures and the acrylic body. Unfortunately with innovation comes significant risk and in this case it didn't work out.
I was 23 when the Bricklin came out. I loved the car. If I wasn’t a broke college kid, I would have found a way to get one. Consider the shitty styling of the “ Big 3” in the 70’s. The Bricklin styling was miles ahead. The DeLorean was next level as well 6 years later. I admire the men, Malcom Bricklin and John DeLorean very much for pursuing their dreams.
If you got a DeLorean would you try another LS swap? RCR's Brian tried one and he gave it very high praises which given that he had driven a Hooptie, the DMC12 remake and that LS Swap makes his opinion pretty good.
@@SteveEarlcelerityproject yet the hydraulic system is terrible bad if it can't even handle operating doors at once it doesn't have a chance in hell not to mention the door and hinges would have to be strong enough and their intergity is far from guranteed not to mention if the battery were to short or pop off during the rollover you're shit out of luck.
@@davet231 All of your observations are correct and intelligent - I am not going to argue this just because I'm a troll on the internet. My father met Malcolm Bricklin long ago when he was (going to) buy one of the cars. I also did contract I.T. work for a guy who did contract engineering work for Bricklin. That engineer said that the team originally proposed the torsion bar setup, but that team was a room full of intelligent people who immediately said "What if it rolls over?". John Delorean was in a room of rich a-holes who just said "That's tubular!" and then sneezed coke all over the drawings. (It's a funny tale, of course but that's what I learned) But yes, you are correct - the system wasn't so great that it would actually address these issues. The Bricklin was made in New Brunswick Canada. The idea was that out of work people in the fisheries could build a car with limited training. The government was desperate as people were out of work due to the closing of the fishing grounds. Its a nice idea, and the people were interested, but they just had no training. I am sure they could have made great lobster traps though.
When i moved into my house many years ago, one of my neighbors had a small barn in his backyard and had a Bricklin and a Delorean stored in it. A couple of times a year he would take them out.
Regarding the Bricklin: I don't care what anyone says, that body style is STILL relevant today. With a proper engine and transmission and modern tech it would be a great car....
I live in Manitoba Canada and a guy I work with owns a bricklin and has worked on every bricklin in the province. Says there is about 7 bricklins in MB.
I have a suggestion for you Hoovie, those old Ford automatics were prone to sticking in high gear, 1: is this an overdrive transmission? It could have electrical problems. The most likely thing is a modulator valve or something like that that is causing you to have to start in third gear. Fix the transmission and the Bricklin will probably win hands down on rematch.
I remember when the Bricklin Came out. It was exiting. You saw advertising for EVERYWHERE but rarely saw the cars. I always thought it was a good looking car.
I love Bricklins. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of them. Yeah, they're oddballs. But, the only reason why the DeLorean is famous is because of Back to the Future. The Bricklin is unique, and it's one of the reasons why I love it.

Bricklin tried to sell police packages! They gave Scottsdale Arizona 5 of them. Imagine trying to chase a bad guy and needing to open those doors in the type of a hurry a cop might need!
Yep. Something definitely wrong there. With 100 more hp, the transmission shouldn't matter unless the gearing is way, way lower in the delorean for that short race.
I was thinking the exact same thing (and even if it had the AM 360 it should east that Volvo-Renault V6 for breakefast...) Probably has closed points and a busted vacuum-advance hose!

one of the best reviews of both cars I've ever seen! Great footage, respectful but honest commentary and a funny - real life resembling - competition. Thanks a lot! There is so much bad reviews about the De Lorean, that I can't really agree with. Just because an affordable car looked like a Super Sports car doesn't mean it has to perform like one. It was a respectable approach - seems to have been quite usable in everyday life with really unique details. I think I would like the design even if it had never been the movie star. Its kind 'a cool looking from every angle, sitting flat on the street with its nice tail lights. Pretty timeless design!
the PRV V6 engine was 'federalised' for the USA market with lower output of 130hp, Euro-spec versions have 160hp. It was originally meant to have a Bi-rotor Wankel engine from Citroen but they cancelled the project so DMC chose an off-the-shelf motor that is easily serviced in States.
yeah my stock '76 Bricklin moves out way better than the one on this video, but I don't think he was punching it as there was a parked truck almost in the Bricklin's lane ahead.
Always nice to see something different from the mainstream. I kinda like the hydraulic doors on the Bricklan. More of a novelty car. I knew one guy who bought a DeLorean new and he really beat on it. I've always enjoyed the lesser known cars. Thanks for sharing.
5Rounds Rapid yes but this was pre Chrysler purchase. Chrysler bought AMC in 1987 and the Bricklin was built between 1974-75. The first Brinklin versions were with the AMC 360 v8.
Bought a 1974 Corvette, new and it wasn't much better than the Bricklin. Within a year I found: 195 tiny ponies not horses, high single digit gas mileage, cracking vinyl interior trim, stress cracking fiberglass, a mysterious non-starting problem (finally diagnosed as a bad ground), and generally sloppy construction inside and out. I sold it 30 years ago and have not once thought about a rebuy.
No it wasn't, it was built in a town called Dunmurry which is about 5 miles or so south of Belfast, technically classed as Greater Belfast, but nothing to do with Harland &Wolff. The old factory still stands and is used today by (iirc) Montupet. The old test track is still there and every so often gets cleaned up for big events like Delorean Eurofests.
Great and fun video. Man you just made me want a DeLorean even more. I just realized how much I like the interior as well. Just I cant believe how engaging the car is. It's unreal.
For 1975, it wasn't bad, considering their resources. GM was the largest and wealthiest car maker by far, yet they still produced the Chevy Vega, which had a sleeveless aluminum block and iron heads, and no coolant recovery tank, so coolant was just expelled to the ground when the engine got hot. The result was predictable. Despite the extremely low production numbers, I wouldn't be surprised that in a few decades from now, there will be more Bricklin survivors than Vega survivors.
Well done I just stumbled across your site and immediately fell in love with your work which is why I subscribed and liked it. Keep doing what you do and once again another show to make me late for work in the morning..lol..
4:55 Pressing "Up" not down. 5:05 Horn is on signal stock. Delorean is a cruiser. Owned mine since July 2000 and even delivered pizza with it for 2 years. Still runs great after over 1/3 of a century on the road. I know what I got. It ain't gonna win any races and that's fine. Still plenty fast enough for daily traffic and will top 120mph bone stock. Cruising at interstate speeds is a dream. On rails and effortless. I got an S5 if I wanna go fast.
I owned an August 81 build for about 10 years and I agree with all of your observations. Great highway cruiser! Terrible turning radius and painful with no power steering at low speeds. Also it's probably good that Tyler couldn't get the tollbooth window down or he might have rolled it right off the track! Mine were constantly jumping off the tracks in the doors. The regulator design was horrible.
why would it still be going on when both could easily go past 100? the delorean could max out at more that 130 as said in video and the bricklin could do up to 200... they are both capable of that speed
Wow. I just found out about the Bricklin and i've known about the DeLorean forever. And just today, one of my favorite car youtubers posts a video on the two!
I went to college with Mark Bricklin, Malcolm's son. The ads for the Bricklin touted the fact that there was no cigarette lighter, for safety reasons -- no dropped ashes. He told me that the engineers just forgot to design one in. Mark was driving a Subaru. Before he had his own car company, Malcolm was the first importer of Subarus.
No...There is no ashtray either. Im sure they didnt forget a spare tire either, there was NO spare tire or jack for the car. Changing a flat on the side of the road was not safe. The "Safety Vehicle 1" was full of little quirks like that. The doors only needed 12 inches clearance to open, so you could get out if an idiot parked you in.
In 1974 they had the AMC 360 and you could get a 4 speed manual transmission. After that they all had the Ford engines with an automatic which were lackluster
Ive seen a few sv1's before and even got a chance to drive one back in 2007 and i can say that they are by no means fast but this bricklin is not running like it should . also those doors should open and close in half that time if they were working correctly
I didn't even know that I wanted to see this race but when I saw this video existed I had to watch it. one of my uncles had a 1965 Corvette with a 327/4spd and back about 1975-ish he wanted a Bricklin and was contemplating getting rid of the 'Vette. Glad he didn't and still has that sweet '65.
Deloreans are hopefully going to be made in 2019 again they will look the same however they will be new , with 300-400hp engines the problem with the original delorean being a flop was it was under powered , also the brakes upgraded with wider wheels needed , and air ducting will be changed
I used to want a Bricklin but research showed that they were expensive, a rich man's hobby. This video is wonderful because Malcolm Bricklin didn't like the boxiness of the design offered to him by John DeLorean. So we have the rejected car beating the official car, that's amazing! I predict this video will get millions of views because it's two gull-winged cars racing of course!
I believe it was Car and Driver that said, at the time, that the Bricklin looked like a Corvette swallowing an 8-track tape.
Now that you mention it... it kinda does lol

I don't care what people think. The Bricklin is a cool car and looks nice. Drop in a crate engine and you have a sweet ride.
Always nice to see something different from the mainstream. I kinda like the hydraulic doors on the Bricklan. More of a novelty car. I knew one guy who bought a DeLorean new and he really beat on it. I've always enjoyed the lesser known cars. Thanks for sharing.
I believe the Bricklin first had a 360 AMC V8, then switched to the Ford 351W. Never a Chrysler motor.
Correct and in 1974 you could get it with a 4 speed manual transmission
I literally seen that bricklin In the exact same color like a couple of days back
The Bricklin started out with an AMC engine, not Chrysler, and then went to a Ford 351
Zach Allen AMC used Chrysler engines, and Chrysler used AMC engines after they bought Jeep.
5Rounds Rapid yes but this was pre Chrysler purchase. Chrysler bought AMC in 1987 and the Bricklin was built between 1974-75. The first Brinklin versions were with the AMC 360 v8.
@@5roundsrapid263 amc had their own engines those years not Chrysler's
@@fuckelonmusk9395 I have an AMC engine in my 2005 Jeep Wrangler.
@@rickybobby6760 It's sad that they retired the engine. I've heard that they last for over 300,000 miles before an overhaul.
The Drag race on which car will rust out the most first is still ongoing....
You mean between the stainless steel car and the fiberglass one...? LOL
One of them is all fiberglass sooo
Neither will rust goofball.
That's the joke guys, that's the joke 😂
@@joannaatkins822 Thank you. I was beginning to think society was doomed for a minute.
Thank you featuring my favorite car and the Bricklin. Good video!!
The delorean was not just built in the Uk
It was built in Northern Ireland... in the uk
It's Irish - the UK is the jurisdiction....for now
The DMC was built in Belfast at the Harlan Wolff ship building yard where the Titanic was built
You were driving the DeLorean all wrong! It has a French engine and therefore must be driven in reverse for maximum performance! :)
xXAust1n46Xx if they tuned the cpu to make it think it is running away from battle it would be the fastest car ever
that window winder crank looks like the one i have in my AMC Gremlin. Wonder if Bricklin got some parts from American Motors.
Plenty of interior parts were AMC
Omg Hoovie stop uploading when I'm trying to get ready for work :(
Sorry but I can't feel bad for you. Manage your time better.
lol
Don't worry, something to look forward to when you get home from work
remove the youtube notifications dude.
i foresee another late warning in it future .
Great and fun video. Man you just made me want a DeLorean even more. I just realized how much I like the interior as well. Just I cant believe how engaging the car is. It's unreal.
The Bricklin is just one of the craziest car stories around--start to finish. A particularly sad story for the entire entity of New Brunswick.
Your content is truly something this world needs but doesn’t deserve.
The bricklin looks allot like a saab sonett 👌😂
I have owned both, thought I was the only one who thought so!! Both were strange, slow, but unique cars. Glad I had them, glad I sold them.
Saab sonnet 3 looks much better though
I still prefer the bricklin. Maybe it lost in this video but the bricklin is a completely COOLER car
You could have had a Delorean but instead you brought a Lebaron...
PROMPT SERVICE IS REQUIRED
OIL PRESSURE IS LOW
YOUR DATE IS UGLY
They're definitely not in the same price category... or in any common category for that matter, except the decade they were built in.

Well done I just stumbled across your site and immediately fell in love with your work which is why I subscribed and liked it. Keep doing what you do and once again another show to make me late for work in the morning..lol..
Did I spy a floor mounted dimmer switch in the Bricklin? Vintage.
Was the drag race for who hit 88 first? If so, it should still be going on.
why would it still be going on when both could easily go past 100? the delorean could max out at more that 130 as said in video and the bricklin could do up to 200... they are both capable of that speed
Wow. I just found out about the Bricklin and i've known about the DeLorean forever. And just today, one of my favorite car youtubers posts a video on the two!
Which one do you guys think looks the best?? I like the Bricklin's look from the outside - especially from the side.
Mark is a pal of mine too! Love my Bricklin. I only wish I could have driven my car against that Delorean. VOOM!!!
Steve, if he remembers me, tell him I said hi.
Not gonna lie, that bricklin looks good. I would love to EV swap one of them.
I had 2 bricklins. Fun car to drive.
You have our explicit permission and/or blessing to trade Doug in for Drew.
Will be stopping by to see the collection on my pass through Kansas. Hoovie, as always, never disappoints.
I thought Bricklin's had AMC V8's.
the 74s had the AMC 360
In 1974 they had the AMC 360 and you could get a 4 speed manual transmission. After that they all had the Ford engines with an automatic which were lackluster
I actually saw a SV 1. It too thought it was a kit car and imagined a light nimble lotus like driving experience since it looked so sporty.
Ive seen a few sv1's before and even got a chance to drive one back in 2007 and i can say that they are by no means fast but this bricklin is not running like it should . also those doors should open and close in half that time if they were working correctly
The one you saw likely had a pneumatic conversion. Air doors work much faster than hydraulic doors.
The Bricklin hands down with its ford v8 or amc 360 v8 :)
Deloreans are hopefully going to be made in 2019 again they will look the same however they will be new , with 300-400hp engines the problem with the original delorean being a flop was it was under powered , also the brakes upgraded with wider wheels needed , and air ducting will be changed
I wonder how many "big Hair" 80's folks got their hair stuck in the gullwing doors?
And this is why I love this channel.
Drew is a snack 😍
fastfiatjames t eat some fuckin Pringles instead thirstboi.
Drew is HOT
Metro ftw
These both cars are so cool! Im so lucky to have seen both of them , now if a drive..
Drew, speak up bro! When Tyler throws it to you, give some history of the car and why the collection wanted one.
yeah you're right... I was hoping for some backstory.
Drew seems like he's more on the shy side :D
@@SaschaS. and the problem with that?
My hats off to Hoovie. Has had as many chicks as cars in 5 years. I salute!
Holy hell a Bricklin, that’s a rarity.
Those bricklin doors sound like a fifth wheel pop out
