Excellent review, almost a “new take” on car reviews - I’ve watched too many to count. A presenter who knows plenty about the history, engineering specifics and maintenance of the car. Who speaks clearly, with passion (but without drama and/or quirky traits) and is even a little endearing. Introduces genuinely important facts about the lineage and history of the car, as well as what it’s like to live with. All with great video and photography and even a real journey! And by God, does the Delorean look awesome! The shape has aged magnificently well, highly desirable. Well done - please review more cars with the same approach, you’re at least as good (but in my opinion, better) than all the rest!!
Fantastic movie, really enjoyed it! I got my DeLorean nov 17 and have spent most of the winter realising everything you talk about. The availability of spare parts, the community, the amount of resources online. I love my car! Taking it to my first, and a very small car show in the community where i grew up this Sunday! Will probably be the most modern car there! BTW, your car seem to be in very very nice condition, good job!
I am a huge fan of the man , John DeLorean and the car , the DMC 12. I was born in 1965 and have worked on a few of these in my career as an automotive repair technician. This video is one of the most down-to-earth videos I have watched that was about the vehicle itself and how it has held up to the criticisms that one always hears about. Keep in mind that this vehicle was built in the early eighties and was the first version of it's kind.. It never had the opportunity to be improved upon or remodeled in later years as many of the big three would have done with their models that were not so perfect. Great job with the video and thank you.
Of all the videos I have watched on Deloreans, this one is by far my favorite. Thank you for making it. Best line ever... "All cars from that era....were shit." So much truth.
I can tell you that the super durable stainless steel body is still as strong and shiny if you clean it. I had just left the Air Force and was considering buying it buy the Renault engines were a very uncertain quality( thank u EPA) that I changed my mind.
@@briankirby6714 The PRV never got much love. Besides the notorious soft cams that flattened before the engine was ready to be retired, the mechanical fuel injection was only a moment in time toward electronic fuel injection. Better than carburetors but not as good as what was coming in a handful of years. You are definitely right on the money with the EPA; it was a horrible time to be a car.
Great video. There is still plenty to check with your DeLorean electrical. I have a 130amp altenator on mine, cleaned every ground and replaced all bulbs with LED'S. My volt gage doesn't drop below 12.5 volts with everything running. Also the is enough parts at DMC to make 200 cars, not 3000. No big deal. I redid my whole car and i never worry about anything while driving! I drive mine every day practically. Love every second!
LED's were a big get for us. I put in LED headlights that pull a grand total of 1.6 Amps. Another gain was battery technology. If you choose to pay the $200-$300+ for the AGM-technology, you'll have a stronger and more reliable voltage delivery. Then they designed solid-state relays, actuators to replace solenoids... the list goes on. The electrical issues have been put to bed.
What a fantastic video! I was so prepared before watching the video to assume it was a 'count the faults' of a vehicle pushing 40 years of age but was pleasantly surprised. Its rare to find an auto video that gives the viewer a feel of the spirit of not just the vehicle but also of owning one. Nicely done!
A VERY informative and honest road trip and review of this iconic motor.Nice to see more positives than put downs like so many do .Nice job and cool car.
The horsepower at the time was above average, especially at 160. My firebird of 1988 had the same amount and was way heavier. The power at the time was fine. Doing 0 to 60 in 8 or less seconds was very braggable back in the day.
Having owned a Delorean for 40 years this is an honest review. As a daily driver it is a wonderful car, very reliable. Many of the complaints of lack of power, alternator, front suspension, speedometer have been corrected over the years making the car even more reliable. But it has always drawn peoples attention, it looks like nothing else on the road. With all the stainless parts now available for the car, it can be made virtually rust free, if you have deep enough wallet. And an engine/trans swap puts it in supercar speed.
I fell in love with the DeLorean the very first time I saw it... and nothings changed to this day. Watched this video and loved every minute of it. I'd own one in a shot if I could.
This guy is a rarity: he talks in a way where it’s not annoying. Please keep reviewing things, you make it interesting and are not irritating, great work!
My neighbor growing up was a rather eccentric pathologist. His wife drove a AMC Pacer wagon and he drove one of these as his daily driver for years. It was eventually totalled by the insurance after it was rear ended by a drunk driver in a FORD pick up. It had nearly 150 K miles on it.
Your voice and the way your describe things is freaking awesome. I could listen to you talk about cars all day man. When you said the name of the hotel, I lol'd hard.
Great review! To me, what makes a car is rear quarter panel view. Makes me fall in love with the car all over again every time I stop at a gas station stop!
moosefactory133 it would have sold like pancakes, In fact Delorean would possibly still be around now with a lot of different models and possibly the Dmc-12 still around tho now vastly different
I'm speechless! Stunning review! Thank you Sir! When the car first made its debut in 1981, a dealership here in the U.S.A. placed a DMC-12 on the floor of a large shopping Mall in Eatontown, New Jersey. The mall is called "Momouth Mall" in Monmouth county New Jersey. I used to drive there (30 minutes away) just to walk around the car for a ridiculous amount of time, always studying what I could see from the outside of a locked car. So beautiful! Everything just flowed right. I've always preferred the design of rectangular shaped sports cars (i.e. Lotus) and this DMC-12 design took that to a new level. I could have purchased a used Delorean in 1991 for only $10,000 but didn't take the jump. Would've, could've, should've ... so close yet so far! I remember going to the Library over-and-over and reading one of the earliest books on the DeLorean titled, "Stainless Steel Illusion" by John Lamm. A stunning book loaded with historical information. Never had the chance to own a DMC-12 as prices soared but certtainly enjoy watching all the helpful youtube videos about the car and this particular video is 2nd to none. By far the best from a trusting gentleman. Great review. Thank you once again!
First video ever who actually give you an impression of how it is to drive, overtaking etc. Quite nimble and swift... normally we have some guy rambling those myths read from some web page
Thanks a million for the review, that the best video about the Delorean out there. It actually inspired me to buy a Delorean. It's on a truck between Kansas and California as we speak and it's just hard to wait... so I am watching this video over and over....
It is probably the only review that mentions DeLorian and Lada Niva in the same sentence 🤣 Great review by the way. Was very interesting and informative. An iconic car in a pretty decent state, and still used on a regular basis. That's delightful! The only thing is that I would move that slider in Myth 2 (handling) more to the 'truth' part...
For my eye, the front shocks are shot, ont the dash not only the speedo failed, but also oil pressure is stuck at the top of the scale and temp seems stuck just at the bottom. Still the look of this thing on the road is amazing, and it is good to see well maintained and loved Delorean alive.
I was getting road sick just looking at it sway on the road in the video, yeah I think the shocks were shot. as for the dash, I would probably go the retro future look and put in some fluorescent digital display type thing. I think it wouldn't be hard too hard to do, put a sensor on the wheel, small arduino chipset and presto.
car with the dmch kit rides low, the speedo is mechanical and does fail fairly easy to fix, the temp is usually very low esp with modern updates and the wings B cool kit, and finally the oil pressure is always capped as the factory unit what incorrect slightly, but if you have low pressure it will show.
I enjoyed this review, it was very straight forward no bull crap, and good for a person that is interested in buying a DeLorean. Would highly recommend for a DeLorean review, can't wait for the next one.
I am not a sports car guy, but I love the "Back to the Future" films. There is something very cool about seeing a review on a car from the 80s like it was a new car.
This was such a wonderfully produced and excellently written video! This is the year I'm finally looking to buy the car of my dreams, and videos like this help make it all the more exciting to do so. Thank you for your attention to detail and for the care you put into this car. I would say I'm looking forward to more videos from you, but you're selling it! Thanks for all the time you put into this video, though, to pave the way for more owners in the future. :)
THIS IS THE BEST , TRUTHFUL AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THE DMC 12 THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. HE GOT ALL OF THE INTERNAL AND MECHANICAL FACTS CORRECT AND EVERYTHING HE SAID IN THIS VIDEO ABOUT THE CAR MYTH WISE WAS TRUE. I OWNED ONE BUT HAD TO SELL IT. I PLAN ON PURCHASING ANOTHER ONE SOON. GREAT VIDEO.
VICTOR ALLEN Thank you - it was important to me to actually get one source of information out there that actually was correct when it came to this car!
One of the most beautiful cars ever in my opinion. Notice how the speedometer on this one actually goes to 170. In the US, it only went to 85. If John Delorean had the financing and money backing to make the car better like he really wanted, it would've been something truly special.
@@Patrick94GSR if the front driver has 1 second of distraction you are dead.... and he had to avoid the delorean. Dont seems a perfect overtake if ur life depends on a distracion or the accuracy of the front driver.
Great review of the DMC 12!!! You show the ski rack at 10:58 and I had no idea a ski rack could be attached to car. Great info on the alternator and the fact you would drain your battery if you ran all the systems. Thank you for preserving this classic!!!
a great informative video thank you for posting it. My uncle had two of them an auto and manual. I have drive the Auto before and i loved it. on the freeway it just cruses along with no issues and i thought was very comfortable. and you are right you do get asked alot of questions at gas stations or practically every where you go. I love the fact that there are so many new updated products for the car that make it even better than it was from the factory.
Very well said with no excuses and no hype. My father bought one new in 81 and it broke down on the way home. At $60 grand in those days it was WAY overpriced. There was only one auth dealership/mechanic in town and they had never seen one. At20 yrs old I drove it to college and sold it within a yr after 3 water pumps failed, got locked in, vapor locks and numerous lucas elec issues. Got 1/2 price for it "ouch". In 2007 against my better judgement but seeing the community and parts availability had grown, I bought a low vin, manual and after a major initial 2 yrs of working out the bugs it's my daily driver. Owning a Delorean is both like dating a super model and frying bacon naked. If you want a fast car, buy ONE. You want a oddball, a challenge and a very unique car and willing to accept the good AND the bad, get a Pantera HAHAHAHAHA.....
The car was not "At $60 grand in "those days", it was $25k. The most they sold for was about $30k, and that was for those who just had be the first to have it. They do go for about $60 today for one in good condition.
@@kriswingert1662 It is called inflation. Go to inflation finder, type in a amount and see what the conversion is. www.usinflationcalculator.com/ I remember on the same lot was a loaded brand new Corvette which was $17500. Of the 4 Deloreans sold here in Columbia, all broke down. The auth "dealer" had no mechanics who had actually seen one. 3 gave up and got rid of theirs for whatever they could dump them for while one was painted red and actually maintained for a good 20 yrs iirc until it caught fire and burned to the ground.
Well done video. Thank you, as I learned a lot. I'm most surprised with the engine as it held up to sustained high RPM's and fuel mileage was excellent. I would have liked to hear about heat and air conditioning, as well as electrical regarding wiring, connectors, or fuse box issues.
Thank You Ive owned a Delorean here in Australia (1916 Jun 81 with a petrol flap) for almost 10 years. I laughed when your windscreen wiper decided to shift its position as its happened to me on more than 1 occasion and yes its always raining. The only major problems I have had with the car are the central column that holds the gullwing doors on had rusted and we made a new column out of stainless and the other major was that there is a 2 piece splined shaft in the gearbox that wore out ( 80,000 miles). I drive it on long journeys and loved your fair and accurate description of owning one . Cheers David Parkinson
One thing I notice everytime I see a DeLorean is that the headlights just aren´t placed completely right but that´s part of it´s charm. Still an awesome car and great video.
Once the De Lorean hits 88 miles per hour and transported into another time, the oncoming traffic won't even be there. You just have to think 4th dimensionally.
I used to drive that road daily. It was pretty standard there. Honestly with that car being LHD and wide and not particularly fast it was probably the best opportunity for a while - he turned right at the next roundabout and then left onto a much narrower road.

Bravo! Best DMC review of them all! My only critique is about the voltmeter, don't believe it; I used to be in constant fear my alternator (standard 90 amp unit) was struggling to power everything because the volt gauge would drop the same way yours does. I finally got around to testing with a multimeter and to my surprise and relief even with the low and high beams on, the blower motor on speed 3, and the car at idle the meter read 13.4 volts while the gauge was a hair under 13. When the stock radiator cooling fans came on the gauge dropped to halfway between the first yellow hash mark and 13V but the multimeter read 12.6V, quite a discrepancy. Again, superb work and thank you for posting.- DMC VIN 10287
What a great video. Your Top Gears etc wouldn't have done a better job mate, brilliant effort. You never seemed to mention though, just why anyone would want to own a DeLorean. More than Back to the Future (but does owe a hug nod towards) it's just a f**king cool car man! There are and have been hundreds of cool classics to showcase, each with their own stories no doubt, but few can claim this story, this struggle and this ones doomed development and existence, and yet it came out the other side a gleaming hunk of stainless steel legend. DeLorean himself I'm sure never could have imagined his car becoming such an icon. I'll never forget my first sighting of one in the flesh. Silverstone in the late 90's at a F1 fan day for Jordan. I spotted the legend in the car park, flanked by a bevvy of expensive wallpaper sports cars. Bee line to the DeL for many photos and a cheeky caress of the polished steel. Beautiful.
Thanks Darah Doyle for the kind words! Once the car is back out of hibernation I’m going to do another couple of videos this year - one taking it on track, and another trying to break 16 at Santa Pod 👍
This was an outstanding in depth look at a very interesting car. I love this era of cars. Their simplicity, serviceability, and the directness with which you drive them is what makes them rewarding. A car doesn't need rocket acceleration to be fun. Look at the history of cars and the eras when people were the most passionate about them. People's passion for the automobile has not tracked with how fast they were at a given time. Today's cars are comically, uselessly fast, but people care less about them than they ever have. I contend that this has happened because cars have become sterile, insulated, unserviceable throwaway appliances that you never build a connection to. I've been daily driving a mid-80s car for 12 years. Whenever you buy an old car you have to sort through the problems that have piled up over the years, but as long as you are willing to research and get your hands dirty then you can sort it out and make it reliable. Best of all, you will then have a car that is truly *yours* - that you can maintain yourself at very minimal cost. It's way cheaper than paying a mechanic to maintain something more complicated, let alone a new car payment. The problems I had to resolve on my car were probably typical - electrical flakiness caused by broken connectors, alternator, exhaust, and most urgently the cooling system. It only seemed unreliable because the previous owners chose to keep jiggling wires, replacing lost coolant, and otherwise punting instead of actually troubleshooting and fixing the car.
Best comment in ages! COMPLETELY agree about how the emotional connection to cars has been lost as they have slowly turned into personality-less appliances. Cars of this era EARNT their speed - modern stuff just uses a turbo to punt out masses of torque, and don’t even get me started on EVs! (As much as they are the future…)
@@RUNDMC1 electrics might be somebody's future but they're definitely not mine. I don't drive nearly enough to justify the cost of batteries for those things. I love simple cars that I can maintain on a budget, without reliance on a paid mechanic/dealership. 80s cars weren't the fastest but they were practical (and still are, for those who are able and willing to maintain them).
The voltage drops when you start turning things on because that car is not equipped with a Mr. Fusion. You see, engineers at DeLorean were forward thinkers: They knew that that add-on would come along, so they didn't bother about fitting in a more powerful alternator. Awesome car and awesome vid!
Yeah, that overtake at 4:13 might have been 'relatively' safe, but if an officer saw that you'd be pulled over and ticketed instantly; additionally I've had too many near misses with people thinking this kind of overtake is safe, where I've had to swerve or brake to avoid an accident and they've carried on without a care in the world. The rules of the road are there for a reason; the average drivers ability to judge this type of situation is very poor, so to avoid any issues you don't overtake if there's on-coming traffic. Don't gamble while driving, kids - it's not just your life you're playing with.
tehPete I’d happily overtake like that in the UK with a police officer behind me, in front of me, being the car coming the other way. On a road this wide where the other vehicle doesn’t have to move or slow down and there’s a safe passing gap - the cops would pat you on the back and encourage you for improving traffic flow. It may be different stateside.
@@RUNDMC1 I'm in a rural area of the UK; if you tried something like this down here you would end up with - at the very least - being pulled over and the officer having a stern word with you. Too many over-confident town and city tourists try this on roads that simply aren't wide enough; people generally don't account for their own biases, and are prone to bad judgement - even more so when they're on holiday and not paying full attention. This overtake would have been classed as unsafe, because you could have held off for three seconds and made the overtake without going three abreast. They're probably hotter on it down here because of the massive hike in accident rates we see each season.
You are living proof that John's vision became an absolute truth. Car culture worldwide is made up of gentleman such as yourself you refuse to let convenience stifle connection with your machine
Years ago someone told me "There's a DeLorean for everyone who *really* wants one." So true. It's not a casual commitment. You have to love it more than it hates you some days. But on the good days, it's SO GOOD.
I was trying to figure out who he reminded me of! Fitting that he's driving a time machine. I feel like the 12th Doctor could very easily be Britain's Doc Brown.
It's a horrible overtake I think. People do it near my house, it is one of the most dangerous roads in the area because it is wide like that where people take a chance. If someone does it at the same time from the other side there isn't enough space. The local council have tried to solve it with a middle red lane and markings but it doesn't deter people.
This is the best DeLorean review video I've ever seen. It's honest, straight forward, and doesn't present all the bullshit myths like they're gospel. Well done!

It never had the opportunity to be improved upon or remodeled in later years as many of the big three would have done with their models that were not so perfect.
Great job with the video and thank you.
This is as close to a Top Gear (Grand Tour) Delorean review as we'll ever get. Thanks for filling that void!

This is the best DeLorean review on UA-cam, learned so much thanks.
+1
The horsepower on these is a little low but the jigawatts are awesome!
Jigawatts lolllzxz
1,21 Jigawatts!! I rate this car 3,6. Not great, but not terrible.
It's not low for early 80s.
The horsepower at the time was above average, especially at 160. My firebird of 1988 had the same amount and was way heavier. The power at the time was fine. Doing 0 to 60 in 8 or less seconds was very braggable back in the day.

EVOLICIOUS Lol
You sound as though you know my ex wife!
Amazing how this car, 38 years on, still looks way more modern than virtually every other car in 2018.
Ross H haha, thank you Ross!
That's such a shame damn

To me, what makes a car is rear quarter panel view.

One of these days I aim to have my very own DMC-12. Such a gorgeous vehicle!! :)

I wonder how well the sales of this car would have done had the first Back to the Future came out around the time of its introduction

Thank you once again!
electricwally Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
33 miles per gallon at 85mph? That's incredible.
Well damn, I liked this video quite a bit. You did a great job and good luck with your DeLorea.

First video ever who actually give you an impression of how it is to drive, overtaking etc. Quite nimble and swift... normally we have some guy rambling those myths read from some web page
That's the difference between an authentic presenter, and a 'UA-camr'.
Thanks a million for the review, that the best video about the Delorean out there. It actually inspired me to buy a Delorean. It's on a truck between Kansas and California as we speak and it's just hard to wait... so I am watching this video over and over....
Hey Arnaud, that’s amazing! Enjoy the car, and don’t hold me responsible when you have your first breakdown! 👍🤣
This is the best review I've watched on a DeLorean. Thank you and greetings from California, USA.
Easily one of the best DMC videos on youtube. Nice job, and thanks. Couldn't believe you'd do 110!

It is probably the only review that mentions DeLorian and Lada Niva in the same sentence 🤣
Great review by the way. Was very interesting and informative. An iconic car in a pretty decent state, and still used on a regular basis. That's delightful!
The only thing is that I would move that slider in Myth 2 (handling) more to the 'truth' part...
One of the best DeLorean videos made. It's on par with Jay Leno's garage but with better scenery!
Thank you!
The inop gauges reminded me of my TR-7.
car with the dmch kit rides low, the speedo is mechanical and does fail fairly easy to fix, the temp is usually very low esp with modern updates and the wings B cool kit, and finally the oil pressure is always capped as the factory unit what incorrect slightly, but if you have low pressure it will show.

Wow ! That was a wonderful and precise video . DeLorean is my favourite.Thank you !
I am not a sports car guy, but I love the "Back to the Future" films. There is something very cool about seeing a review on a car from the 80s like it was a new car.
One of the coolest, most well-made DeLorean videos ever, in my opinion. Really in-depth.. a day in the life of ownership. WOW! good work!!

One of the most beautiful cars ever in my opinion. Notice how the speedometer on this one actually goes to 170. In the US, it only went to 85. If John Delorean had the financing and money backing to make the car better like he really wanted, it would've been something truly special.
Yes - this is a rare aftermarket speedometer. The other unusual ones you see are for the Canadian market which go to 240kph / 140mph

I wish I could talk about my DeLorean like you do. I can't remember any of those facts for some reason, even now nearing 10 years of owning one.
Great review of the DMC 12!!! You show the ski rack at 10:58 and I had no idea a ski rack could be attached to car. Great info on the alternator and the fact you would drain your battery if you ran all the systems. Thank you for preserving this classic!!!

Best DeLorean feature.
That is a real bloody good review. Thank you.
a great informative video thank you for posting it.
JIMJAMSC The key words here are “ in those days”, which he is referring to 1981, not 2018. I know what inflation is and he is not talking about now.
Well done video. Thank you, as I learned a lot. I'm most surprised with the engine as it held up to sustained high RPM's and fuel mileage was excellent. I would have liked to hear about heat and air conditioning, as well as electrical regarding wiring, connectors, or fuse box issues.
Great video one of the best ones I've seen about this car, Thank you

Ive owned a Delorean here in Australia (1916 Jun 81 with a petrol flap) for almost 10 years.

One thing I notice everytime I see a DeLorean is that the headlights just aren´t placed completely right but that´s part of it´s charm. Still an awesome car and great video.

I used to drive that road daily. It was pretty standard there. Honestly with that car being LHD and wide and not particularly fast it was probably the best opportunity for a while - he turned right at the next roundabout and then left onto a much narrower road.

Great Review 👍🏻
Thanks! And yes - I’m not worried about my voltmeter gauge, I just think it’s a bit oversensitive!
The stainless steel looks good in the night lights.
Stainless Steel bodywork reflecting 80's neon light signage... is there nothing cooler?
@Főfasírozó even yo mama.

That movie really solidified that car as an icon.
You could be the next James Bond. Great review! (Surprised to see just how low that car is)
He looks more like a rock star from the 80's.
At 4:15 he's passing a truck and running oncoming cars off the road! If a 90 amp alternator can't keep up, it's defective!
The road was wide enough for him to over take

4:15 Brits don't give a f about being on the wrong side of the road centre line with traffic coming the other way.
the first thing i noticed too
It's a horrible overtake I think. People do it near my house, it is one of the most dangerous roads in the area because it is wide like that where people take a chance. If someone does it at the same time from the other side there isn't enough space. The local council have tried to solve it with a middle red lane and markings but it doesn't deter people.
Did you not see how wide that road was? It was nearly the equivalent of 4 lanes wide. His overtake was fine.
