I understand we Leafs fans say this every season, we’re like “this is our year”, but I’m really impressed with these moves. It’s looking like the perfect type of formula when you have the skill upfront the goal scoring ability, the playmaking ability and then last year we helped out a bit by getting guys like Domi who have skill and they’re willing to play rough, Bert is gone but he didn’t produce as much as he should. Ryan Reaves, hate on him all you want, but he brings an important element to the team and makes our skilled guys feel like they have more room out there and they are not intimidated and pushed around, at risk of injury. And then now we’re bringing in some solid defenceman who play the game rough and they can actually play hockey too! And then who knows what else is going down! Brad brings in the right type of guys to complement the skill we already have. The problem with Dubas was he was only focussed on skill and speed and yes, we need skill and speed but you’ve gotta have some guys to protect your young superstars and now this is what Brad is bringing in! Every single Stanley Cup winning team has a mix of skill, speed, great goaltending and toughness toughness is the main key in the playoffs. You need to have guys who can play tough but don’t take up the roster spots with no hockey IQ. They gotta know how to play the game right! If Brad stays on track the way he’s going the leafs are actually looking like they can be a top team playoff time 2025!

Tanev is in his mid thirties, OEL is ok, not great, and Lilly is very overpaid now.

All I was trying to say is that I’m happy that they are adding grit to the lineup but not just grit like that takes a roster spots and all they do is bring physicality. I’m talking about guys who bring physicality but also fit important roles like big defenseman, for example, who can actually play the game things that the team really needs if they’re gonna go deep in the playoffs so what I’m saying is I’m very happy that the team is keeping their speed and strength and skilled superstars and at the same time they’re bringing that toughness to the lineup toughness that the team will need the playoffs so what I’m saying is I’m optimistic
Look at the people tanevs shut down in the playoffs and he is a playoffs player! That’s what we need!
Don’t care about Tanevs term. Buy him out in the end. Leafs need to win now. A few leafs that have been signed won’t be back.

They didn't overpay Stolarz for 2.5 along with D Tanev for 4.5 and OEL 3.5 compared to other D that went in the market...I agree Liljegren is a slight overpay

Tanev needed to be signed and I'm not even mad at 4.5m. OEL at 4m and LiLjEgReN at 3 million when we could have got Roy at 6m is a joke. People seem to forget Timmons was the best exhibition defenceman last year so we could have ran with Timmons and Niemela and if that didn't work go get another defenceman we could have burried.
It's free agency to get a guy to come to your team you have to overpay in either years or $ or both This is the market price clearly
Problem is, what Tre' is paying is what they are going to somewhere else,.he may be having to add term to 'win' the bidding war for desirable players. Fortunately, Leafs do have perhaps the best capologist in hockey.I am still expecting Marner to leave, Perhaps Leaf already have a deal in place, so i think the signings will fit into the salary cap numbers leafs are working with.
Tavares is still the shackle for the Leafs.

I am concerned for the age of this group moving forward experience is good but I question will it be good enough.

Pretty hard to make all the changes that we the fans would like if they can't find a trade partner for Marner. That is still the lynchpin. Treliving is handcuffed and the going rate for Defense is what it is. If they could have traded Marner before today they could have kept Bertuzzi, added Tanev and OEL PLUS shopped for a new third line center.
Trading Marner would be like taking 2 steps forward and 3 steps back.

The leafs are a playoff team even without him. Getting rid of his contract automatically makes you better, even without adding pieces with the money you would save. Marner fanboys don't get it...
@@thelifeemery You don't get it. He has more playoff points than either Matthews or Nylander. He is 8 th on the all time point scoring list for a team that has been in existence for close to 100 years. He is a lifetime plus 110. This kind of player does not appear on your team everyday. If the Leafs lose any of Matthews, Marner or Nylander, I doubt they will make the playoffs.

Yes the Leafs are better defensively, we can all appreciate that. I would have rather had Zadorov at 5m instead of Liljeren and Eckman Larsen both. But What is our problem EVERY YEAR? WE STILL HAVE THE SAME FOUR GUYS UP FRONT!!! These guys DO NOT DELIVER IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! My confidence in these guys is as low as it’s ever been. NONE OF THEM score goals when it’s time to fkng score goals. That’s been the REAL problem every single year. They’ve done NOTHING to convince me they are a playoff team. THEY’RE NOT
As a Habs fan that lives in Vancouver I think Leafs fans will regret today. OEL is average at best, and below average at defending; and Tanev is so broken. Stolarz was a great signing though.

Yes, it's abit of an overpay, but if they let Tanev slide by over 500k, the level of crap losing would be epic.

Marner should have been traded after the Leafs lost to the Habs. At worst, traded before his NMC kicks in. JT will return after the end of his contract for at least half the cap hit, he will make a good 3rd line centre when Matthews becomes captain.
Regardless, this Leafs team has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they will not win a Cup with this cap structure so I won't be watching many of the games this year as I didnt watch much of the games last years.
If I am the coach, Marner is on the second PP, playing fewer minutes per game and if Leafs can find someone other than Marner to play first line, I will keep him on the second line. He has every right to not waive his NT. Leafs have every right to think about the future, which should not include Marner. Thus, he will lose 20-25 points and his next contract elsewhere will be far less than he wanted.
