    Zero chance JT moves. Marner is staying too..those no move clauses are killers.

      Plus no-move clauses reduce NHL trading significantly. We want to see the privilidged get traded once in a while, what’s wrong with that?
      No wonder so many coaches get fired now every 12-24 months it’s because the team is handcuffed from making any moves to the roster

  • @TheMitch92
    @TheMitch92 17 днів тому +4

    Not a chance they’re able to get rid of that contract. Not even to a team at the bottom of the league looking for draft picks

    • @jlove8445
      @jlove8445 16 днів тому

      I’d be shocked as well if anyone rolled the dice on that amount of money even if he did waive.
      It’s too juicy of an amount to “unload” unless you make a trade taking back a lot of money and on what type of players?

    • @halla8083
      @halla8083 16 днів тому

      lol, the bottom feeders trying to hit the cap floor would absolutely take on JT with retention to get multiple picks. leafs arent trading him though, and he is gonna extend for 5-6 mil per

    July 1st, increase depth, roster balance, and size without sacrificing skill. Leafs have gaping holes at middle 6 center (to play with and keep up with Willie), top four right shot D man (to pay with and keep up with Rielly) and reliable back-up / starter goalie (for Woll).
    Wingers are ok, top 3 lines M, N, M, K, Y, C / other H, G, R, D, R, S. vs. centers, Matty, 35 year old Tavares / Kampf. Last year as a center 5’9 Domi was weak in his own end and 7 goals. What if there is a UFA 6’2 center the same age and speed, but two-way, pass-first but a good shot, with Bert’s money = C. Stephenson.
    Top playoff team’s defense all averaged over 6’2. R & L = 6’1, B & M = 6’2, so next D man should be 6’3 but still keep up with Rielly. UFA B. Pesce is same age as Rielly, clears the front of the net, uses his stick, and joins the rush, with Brodie’s money.
    Paid back-up wages, reliable UFA goalie C. Talbot was playoff team LA’s starting goalie and at All Star game.

    Short note, Tavares is a pro's pro. Assuming he's no less than a 65 pt centre this season & he's interested in continuing as a Leaf, then I'd re-sign him on a short (2 yr) deal with a low aav (no more than 4M) to offset the long overpay on his UFA deal.
    I don't know if Tree would be interested in retaining him, but at that number he'd be a bargain. Or alternatively, do one year deals based on his merit year to year. Super fit guy who can still play imo.

  • @bigdave8437
    @bigdave8437 16 днів тому

    There was nothing wrong with signing JT as a UFA. Hard fact, he took less money to sign with the Leafs. San Jose offered 12M x 7 & the Isles 11M x 8. It was always going to be an overpay for basically a PPG centre.
    The blunder (by Dubas) was not extending Matthews & Marner after their 2nd ELC years BEFORE signing Tavares & because of that, the Tavares deal set the salary ceiling for Toronto.
    Tree is going to have about 12-13M to sign a capable tandem goalie & hopefully 2 RD. It is likely he could sign Tanev, Walker & one of Stolarz or Brossoit with that money & add a forward like Trenin, Martinook or Duclair.
    Leaf fans should just accept that Tavares & Marner will be on the roster in October. They are in the final year of their contracts & should be highly motivated.

    I read a trade rumor that leafs maybe trading F Calle Järnkrok and F Nick Robertson RFA rights to Sabres for LW Eric Robinson and 2nd round pick in 2025 if true or not we will see? And from rumors that Nick Robertson' camp is looking for 3 years 2m to 3m aav contact and leafs are not willing to give Robertson that and leafs maybe looking to trade Robertson RFA rights if true or not we will see?

    Utla ! How does that make sense? Both JT and Marner if and thats a big if waive there nmc its only going to be for teams that are good already and have a chance at a cup themselves

    • @late3619
      @late3619 16 днів тому

      Leafs know their not going to be a cup contender. So maybe this option might work. Tell JT he will be resigned, let Marner know he won't be. At the TDL ask them both to waive to a cup contender, double retention is both guys each costing around 2.75M. A cup contender getting either one is a heck of an option. Leafs could get some high draft picks and maybe a good prospect.

  • @michaelkirkpatrick7483
    @michaelkirkpatrick7483 16 днів тому

    If you think it's 90% unlikely that JT gets traded, why even do the video? Even if he waived, Leafs would have to retain 50% of his 11M. Better to let him play it out, and see if he takes a future pay cut that Leafs can deal with for another 2 years. As you say, he does still have value, and it gives them time to find a replacement 2C.

  • @Shakes-P
    @Shakes-P 15 днів тому

    Tavares is way more valuable in my opinion. A Captain, amazing along the boards and in the corners, top tier faceoff man. Marner is a offensive zone cheater whos takeaways tilt his d in his favor. Dont trade Tavares, Move him to the wing but have him take draws. as a winger Tavares's speed wouldnt be a liability.

  • @johntapscott4528
    @johntapscott4528 17 днів тому +2

    I, for one believe both Marner and Tavares will play the upcoming season with the Leafs. Which means that they will have about $20 million next summer to spend on free agents after Marner walks into free agency and Tavares resigns for $3 million per. I don’t expect significant improvement to the team until 2005-06.

  • @jlove8445

    Didn’t Lou need to kick in a 1st round pick for someone to take Marleau?
    Tavares is better, although much more expensive and the Leafs couldn’t possibly retain, that sort of defeats the whole purpose.
    Tough sitch with JT

    • @bigdave8437
      @bigdave8437 16 днів тому

      Nope, Lou was the idiot, bending to Badcock's wishes, who signed 38 yr old Marleau to a 3 x 6.25M deal. He was ok in yr 1, with 27G/47 pts, but that's NOT 6.25M worth of production. In year 2 a significant & predictable decline to 16G/37 pts over 82 games both years. Dubas needed cap space to sign Matthews so he had to burn a 1st round pick to get Carolina to take the 3rd year. Truly an un-Lou like signing. I blame Babcock for pushing it.

    If Mitch Marner waives his no trade clause there's a few teams he could go
    First Vegas , second, Nashville, third Vancouver maybe

    • @nerinamak3298
      @nerinamak3298 17 днів тому

      1. Mitch will never waive his NMC unless it comes with an extension.
      2. No team out there will commit to that much term and money for a guy with his reputation.
      3. He will play out his contract and leave as a free agent.
      4. Any trade talk involving Mitch or JT for that matter is pure fantasy.

    LISTEN UP:message to leafs management. ARE YOU LISTENING,DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT TRADE JOHNNY.Some player like Marner play great in regular season but in the playoff goes to sleep.On the other hand JT most of the season he plays sleeping.BUT when the playoffs come he is a beast.The more they bash and push and crash him he becomes a beast in the playoff and is a keeper for that reason.Guys like this you need in the playoff.Taking hometown discount would be good.Maybe give JT 7.8 mil 3 years.Keep Marner.IMO

    I love Tavares, he loves the Leafs, he took at lot less money to come to the Leafs, he might not be the player he was five years ago, but he's nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe!
    Here's a player who loves the Leafs, who bleeds blue and white and I cannot understand why so many Leaf fans want him out!
    Teams know players tend to slow down as they get older, they understand this when they negotiate the player's contract, so it seems a little rich to complain about it now that he's on his last season kids! He took millions less than other teams were going to pay him so he could end his career here and as a 62 year old life long Leaf fan, I love the guy, he's always given everything he had and he has also been a die hard Leaf fan all his life and I hope he stays for whatever his body has left!!
    Tavares's contract is not going to make or break this upcoming season kids, we need to show some Leaf loyalty where it is deserved and it IS 100% DESERVED HERE! I will stand by Tavares!!
    Jack ~'()'~

      We sure are interested in seeing him move on. Think it would be great if JT can reconcile his career should he return to the NYI for his well being.
      Otherwise - JT is ok remaining as a Leafs 3rd line centre with me. 😀

    Tavares is staying. He came home. Stamkos wouldn't. Doughty didn't, and I don't blame either of them. They had legit reasons. JT stays because to trade him would look really bad. Afterall, he came home. Still a serviceable player, just not at 11 sheets.

    signing this robot was the absolute WORST move! it completely destroyed our rebuild and handcuffed the team. and each one of our drafted stars wanted the same fucking money. here we are...6 godamn years later...we are still where we were when we signed him.
    our 2nd worst move was naming him captain. they even held a press conference for this announcement, as if he led the islanders to a bunch of cup finals. his robotic demeanor pisses me off so much!
    until shanadonkey gets a set of balls and at least strips tavares of the C, then and only then will we see progress!
