Fun Fact about the Daigo Parry that people forget: The parry happened in game 1 of a best of 3. Justin still had a chance to come back, and he was doing well. he won the next round and then it all fell apart.

"When you fight against someone who picked Chun Li, you weren't just playing against Chun Li, you were playing against your opponent. You didn't have to figure out how Chun Li played, you had to figure out how *they* played Chun Li."
That sounded strangely philosophical for some reason.
Also, New Generation's arcade cabinet being released as "Three" cracked me up way harder than it really should have.

Unfortunately that’s not really true since Chun Li is so busted that every top player plays her in the same way. Build meter, connect to Super Art 2, repeat. That’s the objectively correct way to play her.

      happy 25th anniversary street fighter 3: 3rd strike!!! :3
thorgi's points on what made 3rd strike so important(would put 6,the alpha series, capcom's other fighters especially darkstalkers/rival schools/power stone, arc system works & definitely snk way above 3rd strike as the real best fighters of all time but see it's importance.) weirdly to say make me visualize ryu describing fully his desire to fight.
like him saying it to reuniting with sakura kasugano or sean losing to him for the 1000th time(do like him but he's definitely the dan hibiki of 3rd strike more than it's sakura just more competent.) ryu talking about all the ways he has fought his opponents like chun li,ken, zangief, his sister laura, dhalsim not only how he fought with them but how they handled their fighting style,if his style matched against it & how to handle improving it.

@@rna151It didn't technically end though. That's the whole issue. I've never played any of the Half-Life games (though I should really get on that soon, as I've become a big boomer shooter fan over the past few years ever since I first played through all the Doom games for the first time starting in 2019), but from what I've heard, Half-Life 2: Episode 2 ended on a cliffhanger. That's probably the main reason why people want Half-Life 3 so bad. In comparison, the fan outcry for Valve to make Portal 3, while still definitely there, is INFINITESIMAL in comparison because they didn't tee up a sequel at the end of Portal 2 like Half-Life 2 did.

You also forgot to mention that SF3 was extremely expensive. Not only were CPS3 systems expensive for arcades but the game itself for players.
The few arcades that had It in my area charged $.75 or $1.00 to play while Alpha 2, XvSF, and countless others could be played for $0.25.
So if you only got a few dollars, even if you wanted to try to play it or learn it, it made more sense just to play the games you already knew.

I think that's why I never seen a Street Fighter III arcade cabinet in my life. I live in South America and I'm old enough to have played games in the arcade, there were plenty of Neo-Geo machines with games like KoF '98 and Metal Slug, I've also played a lot of CPS-2 games like Super SFII and MvC, there were also 3D games like Daytona USA and Tekken 3, but it seems SFIII was too niche and expensive for it to be commercially viable, I don't know why Capcom didn't just develop SFIII for the CPS-II, I mean SNK managed to make Garou: Mark of the Wolves for the Neo-Geo, and that game had a gameplay similar to SFIII on much older and weaker hardware

Might be a hot take but I actually really like Gill's design.
It's a representation of what makes the best fighters, Cold Calculation and Fiery Relentlessness, all on a muscle man. His design is almost him physically representing what he believes to be strength which really lines up with his character of trying to turn the world to be like him. Add the whole messiah aspects of his design and he makes an excellent, and fittingly weird, looking boss for the Street Fighter 3 Trilogy.

Thank you for another Street Fighter retrospective, I think you were right about what you said on Twitter regarding the SF III titles and why they were not popular on release:
"Been seeing people all night saying Street Fighter 3 failed because of all the new characters.
Guys I'm not going to pretend like the lack of legacy characters didn't hurt the game, but that's a massive oversimplification. Street Fighter 3 launched at a time when no home console could play it, and the arcade industry was on the downswing, and there were three other Street Fighter games released within a year of it. (Alpha 2/3, EX 2/3, VS X-Men/MSH).
There were other factors is all I'm saying. Sorry had to get that off my chest because anytime someone says "Street Fighter 3 failed because of the new characters" it's like saying "The Gasoline storage plant burned down from all the dry paper laying around." I'm sure that didn't help, but there was also all the gasoline."

Just to add the CPS3 was a failure of a system too, the same year CPS3 launched another arcade board was launched about 8 months later that was just as powerful, can do everything the CPS3 did with 3D graphics and was optical media based. That arcade board? Sega Naomi.

Honestly, with Ken in a bit of a funk atm as of SF6, it'd be kind of cool if Sean returned to maybe lend a hand in picking up his friend and master's spirits and getting him back to the cleaned up, friendly Ken we all know and love. I just hope they'd treat him not as a joke and figured out something unique to give him. Maybe lean into the electric bit explained with the shoto style mixed with some inspiration from his sister to give him some new moves and properties that set him apart from all the other shotos.

Laura's arcade ending in SFV that showed a slide of Sean winning a tournament post-3s is canon according to SFV director Takayuki Nakayama. I'm not much of a fighting game person. The only fighting game series I've ever played was a platform fighter called the Super Smash Bros. Series and Soul Calibur. But I was never one to fight competitively because I do suck at most fighting games. So I never really was interested in Street Fighter 3 Third Strike or even knew about that legendary moment with Daigo parrying Chun-Li's super there. I even asked myself. "Why was that so hyped." But that was me back when I never understood fighting games that they are today.
But after watching people online play these characters and see these combos. Not to mention watching Clement's video of the lore of Street Fighter and your retrospectives of fighting games. It's gotten me to understand why fighting games are awesome. And why this moment was legendary. Even though I will never play fighting games the way most people play them as I just play for casual cause again I suck at fighting games. I can at least understand most of it.
Aside form this. Great video Thorgi! Though also a fun trivia note. one of Ken's Final Smashes in Super Smash Bros. Is sorta based on EVO moment 37.

It's urgent that Capcom or some fan take the SF3 and Second Impact stages and soundtrack, and include them in Third Strike. This way, we will have more backgrounds and more soundtrack. I for one love Second Impact stages, so vivid and smooth. That will be the ultimate SF3. In short, Hyper Fighting for SF3!

It is literally the second coming of fighting games and it is the reason tournaments are now played in stadiums across the world and are streamed to an even bigger audience. SF4 in my opinion is on almost equal ground with SF2 for what it did for the genre as a whole. And people need to remember and respect that.

The only Street Fighter I still come back to. Everything about the vibe and aesthetic of Street Fighter 3 is perfect, they clearly had a distinct vision for this game and they nailed it. And Third Strike is the most fun Street Fighter has ever been. Also one of the best rosters in my opinion as someone with no nostalgia for this series, these characters are more interesting than the walking race stereotypes that SF2's roster is. Makoto is my favourite character in the whole series and Dudley, Q, Urien and Alex are great as well. And Gill is my favourite Street Fighter boss by a large margin.

    • @xGunbladeKnightx
      @xGunbladeKnightx 10 місяців тому +2

SFII may seem now to have a very stereotypical roster, but the idea was that in those years to represent the world, other fighting games also did it that way. Each character gained the love they deserve despite being stereotypes and their lore expanded, which is why people complain more when they do not appear. Also, if the characters in III were actually more interesting, Alex would have taken Ryu's position as protagonist, which he failed to do, Gill would have appeared more times as a final boss like Bison did, and instead of Sakura and Laura there would be Makoto and Sean in SFV xD

I’m really glad you chose to split this into different parts. This is obviously going to be a long, exhausting series. So I think after it’s finished you should do a smaller franchise that you can fit into one video. Given the fact Killer Instinct is getting the first update it’s had in years, I think it would be a good candidate for next time.
Btw, I had an idea for an episode of Build the Roster. A 3D, Soul Calibur-inspired weapons fighter using Legend of Zelda characters. I don’t know whether it would be better if they made this hypothetical game into a separate timeline or to have all the timelines crossing over. I just had this feeling that Smash Bros Ultimate is supposed to be the last game in the series and it looks like that’s turning out to be true. So, how about we give all the major Nintendo franchises their own fighting games?

1:12:27 THAT is a hell of a surprise considering that back when this game came out, I was 8 years old living in Hawaii and remember playing on the OG Steeet Fighter 3 arcade cabinets. Granted, those same cabinets were later and quickly replaced with 2nd Impact cabinets, but if a small cluster of islands could get their hands on new arcade cabinets quickly and not mainland America, I have to thank my lucky stars for living in Hawaii (and overall shipping to the mainland US to Japan is STILL overall cheaper than shipping to Hawaii, so don't say we got em just cause our islands were closer to Japan)

Thorgi: "I have never seen an original SF3 cabinet in my *LIFE!"*
Funny. The thing that got me into SF3? *New Generation,* no joke. One of the reasons I enjoyed going to a certain laundry room when I was a kid was because they had a *TON* of arcade machines around the place. New Generation was there right next to Marvel vs. Capcom along side other classics there. I mainly played MvC because I was more familiar with it, and at the time I *SUCKED* at SF. But watching other people play it I was hooked, the OST lived rent-free in my mind to this day, and it showed me the 1st ever FG Boss I ever saw in the form of Gill. I know 3rd Strike is the GOAT OF SFIII, but New Generation still kinda holds a good place in my heart.

SF 3rd Strike was a head of it's time and is still be play today at my local arcade some parts in Trinidad. And the cast of characters were fun to play with tho most of the people I know mostly play either Ken & Akuma (obviously). Although I will say as much I love Makoto,Ibuki,Abel and the other new fighers that came out for that game I didn't fully understand the appeal towards Sean, like I get that he's fun to play and has that charismic attitude about him but to me he was another pallete swap base character of Ryu,Ken & Akuma with the same fighting style but with different moves about him. And further on it kinda became stagnant when more fighters that basically have the same shoto fighting styles that are like Ryu,Ken & Akuma began increasing by the time SF4 & 5 rolls along that for me at least kinda become tiresome & repetitive.
Still despite my complaints SF 3rd strive was the corner stone of one the best 2D fighting game of that era and still is to this date. Tho for me at least SF6 is close to tie with it but we'll discuss that on a later day.

Honestly think the visual style of 2nd Impact beats out third strike though. Might be the "best" of the three, but for the visuals? ooh yeah.
The game itself is still a bit more methodical and back to basics, but I rather like that. SF6 really appeals for a similar reason, feels methodical rather than purely twitchy.

    • @kwizzeh
      @kwizzeh Рік тому +2

@@MrSkerpentine That was one of the reasons. Another reason was third party Western support was almost non-existent (EA infamously boycotted the Dreamcast due to Sega USA discontinuing the Saturn in Western markets, meaning none of their sports games made it to the system ex. FIFA & UEFA). Activision, 2k Sports & Sega Sports brands were small beans compared to EA back then. The biggest reason why Dreamcast failed was Sony announcing the PS2. It practically killed all momentum the Dreamcast had in the West despite excellent word of mouth and praise from fans & critics.

As soon as I saw that staredown pose of Alex and Hugo, I immediately looked at a picture of Hogan VS Andre from WrestleMania 3 and sure enough, it's the same dang staredown, especially helped by Alex's blonde hair and red headband along with Hugo just being Andre the Giant in almost everything but name (that and oddly enough EX 3 had a powerbomb/RKO combo with Zangief and Darun that was literally the WrestleMania 30 spot between Randy Orton & Batista but over a decade earlier.)

Part of what makes 3rd Strike so great is that there is never a "correct" or optimal decision in any given situation. _Every_ interaction has absurd levels of counterplay, and counterplay TO that counterplay. And as for it being unbalanced, that's really only at the highest levels. 95-99% of people will be able to have completely rewarding, competitive matches between Ken and Necro, Yun and Q, or Chun-Li and Hugo.
