Great video! You inspired me to do it on my 2000 Tacoma (104K). The gaskets had been leaking with the smell of burning oil. While there, I replaced spark plugs, wires, PCV, and rear camshaft plugs. Everything was cleaned, including throttle body and IAC. I finished the job today... it purrs like brand new... no runs, no drips, no errors. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!
The world as a whole needs mechanics like you, detailed and accurate in every single thing you do. Thank you for all the effort that you put in to helping teach others your trade. Always stay positive and clear minded, someone like you will easily walk through life happy, and profitable. I hope others read this comment and recognize that it's no just your trade that you go about like this but often everything in your life, and I can tell by the cleanliness and organized way you keep your shop. God bless you bud
Toyota Maintenance I have Two 2wd 2002 SR5 4runners...one has 200k miles, the other has 272k molies. With the help of your videos, I’ve done the timing belt water pump pulleys and other belts on the lower mile car. The vehicle now does 100 miles a day between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami for my 25 year old son. I trust this vehicle enough not to worry about him and his commute.
Fantastic , been watching for awhile and nice to see you "go in Depth" on a procedure to see how an experienced pro gets the job done. Appreciate how you displayed type of "gasket sealer/maker" you have chosen to use and sequence of valve cover tightening...ie inside out and opposite sides then torque progressively (old school tips for new mechanics).
Thank you for the video! you have given me the confidence in handling the valve cover replacement myself. I will post later when I finish the job my end results.
Oh, you posted this 1 day after I botched my valve cover job. Like you said, I forgot the half-moon plugs. Time to pay close attention to your video and give it another go! I always come to your channel for my Tacoma maintenance. Keep it up!
I just want to thank you for helping me with my Toyota Tacoma maintenance! Your are very good at it, tanks my friend! I being learning about my tacoma so much,
Very good explanation mine 5vz the guy who fix the valve cover overtite the bolts on valve cover and breaks it and I replace by myself and use the correct torque to do it
this is somewhat low mileage for a VCG weep to start, no? ... i first noticed a weep on my rig at 114k... and now another one possibly in the backside at 335k
i had good success with using a torch on the 3 spark plug tube seals in order to get them out. Still had to use a flat blade screw driver on the edge of the seal and lightly tapped with a rubber mallet in order to get the blade between the seal and the valve cover. Once the blade is between the seal and metal you can start slowly prying it out, the bigger the gap you can make the easier it is to pry it out. Just be sure you dont mar up and damage the metal.
Somehow I get the feeling that pulling and re-installing the driver side valve cover is a tougher job. Would have been nice to see some tips on how to deal with that . . . .
Thank you for the tips. I have a 2000 4runner limited. 225,000 miles. The original owner took very very good care of it. But... It does have a quarter million miles and, it's twenty years old. So, it needs a few minor repairs to get it right. Valve covers being top of the list. It has the "rear sag" issue and I'd love it if you could give me some ideas of how to get it back to the level sitting position. Don't want to lift it. Just make it level and like factory. I have a couple other minor things I'd love to pick your brain on. So..if you see this and feel like it, I'd greatly appreciate your insight. If not, thank you for what you have done and I'm subscribed so I'll keep my eyes open for more vids.
Great video I appreciate you going through the steps I'm about to do this on my truck and you save me a lot of time. Do you recommend adjusting the valve lash while you're in there?
@5:30 any possible chance you have a link to the pry bar tool you have? I only have old/blunt flat head screwdrivers and want to use the right tool....
I've been subscribed for a while and I love the videos! I did this job on my 4Runner but I had to replace the rear cam plugs as well. But the previous owner never changed the oil so my engine has a lot of sludge :-(
hello friend thanks for sharing your experience very learning and helpful ,my 01 4runner having slowly picking up speed I did replaced plugs cleaned up throttle body, replaced fuel filter now my idle steady just did not picking up speed feels abnormal have any idea? or suggestions you may have I really appreciated very much.
Great video! I'm In the process of doing the same job. I replaced one of my fuel injectors and decided to replace valve cover gaskets since everything was torn apart. It looks like you installed your spark plug tube seals backwards.
wow! great video. thankful for including only the essentials. i also like your energy and humor. what did you use to clean the valve cover? it looks so good!
Thank you for this video. I need to do this on my 1999 Toyota 4Runner 5VZ-FE (210,000 miles). Anything I should pay attention to beside of the camshaft seals. Should I change anything else while I have everything apart... fuel injector seals? intake plenum gaskets? hoses? etc...
Hello Sir! love your channel and the videos you upload for us. I am in a big dilemma, I am trying to figure out the spark plug tube gasket orientation. Just like the valve over you worked on, the old seals were in that same orientation. But then when you installed them , from my perspective , you installed them backwards. What is the proper direction and how come it appears you installed them backwards. Thank you Sir!!
no, but what i did with mine was, i waited til i needed an oil change and then i replaced the valve cover gaskets. after i did those, i went ahead and did an oil change. its just a precautious since your removing the top cover, alot of dirt and debris are around that area when you pull it off.
Hello, really enjoying the information mate. You can see you really care. Ive got a Hilux, with 1grfe engine and im getting oil on spark plug threads, not all, only some. Do you think it could be anything but the valve cover gaskets?
oil on threads, dark burnt residue- spark plug not torqued correctly.....spark plug sitting in oil - leaking valve cover gaskets......that is my experience
" Plug, Semicircular 11183-20010 " (you will need 4 of these ones) this is for my Toyota Tacoma 1996 V6 5VZ-FE with the specification VZN170L-CRMDKAB. You can search the diagram on megazip.com and the specific one that you need. Take this as an example. Pay attention to the dates of manufacturing too.
Daniel Deason if you do it i will do it on my 97 4runner lol. Dealer wanted over 500 and another $1,000 to do my oil pan but that oil pan is hard to get out I’m traumatized by all the videos I’ve watched on it hahahaha
Just took my 04 tacoma to the shop for gaskets. Shop called and said one cover was cracked. Pretty sure they broke it. They were going to weld it and put it back on. I told them no. Would never seal right. So I'm out 600 bucks for valve cover gaskets. Ripoff

As a 4Runner guy (2001 V6, 2008 V8) I cannot sufficiently express my appreciation of the knowledge you have provided in this, and other, videos.
This is the best video I've seen for a 1st generation Tacoma owner preparing to execute this job for the first time. Thanks for making it!
These videos are invaluable. I wish this gentleman worked in my town!

I have done this job on my 2003 Toyota Tundra.. it take a lot of time . Thanks for sharing.
When I had my valve covers off I ran them through the dishwasher for 3 cycles. It really got them clean.

The Highest Resale Vehicle on the Planet
70% Wow!
I thought the Wrangler held that position.
@5:30 any possible chance you have a link to the pry bar tool you have? I only have old/blunt flat head screwdrivers and want to use the right tool....
Good job man.... just to let u know... the RTV should atleast have 24 hours of drying time before driving off...
Another high quality video. Thank you for sharing and posting. God Bless...
Excellent video! Thank you, Sir!!
Are there significant differences between the permatex here and the toyota seal packing (FIPG)
I've been subscribed for a while and I love the videos! I did this job on my 4Runner but I had to replace the rear cam plugs as well. But the previous owner never changed the oil so my engine has a lot of sludge :-(
that's bad…hopefully it will go slowly away without catastrophic failure….
Nice Video
It takes more Time/Labor to get to the Gasket than to replace it 😕
hello friend thanks for sharing your experience very learning and helpful ,my 01 4runner having slowly picking up speed I did replaced plugs cleaned up throttle body, replaced fuel filter now my idle steady just did not picking up speed feels abnormal have any idea? or suggestions you may have I really appreciated very much.

Did the customer use Toyota OEM gaskets or aftermarket? Also, did you use new gaskets on the intake?
I have this same truck. What gasket and spark plugs do i need for replacing the old ones?
Thank you,thank you ,THANK YOU.
Great video! I'm In the process of doing the same job. I replaced one of my fuel injectors and decided to replace valve cover gaskets since everything was torn apart. It looks like you installed your spark plug tube seals backwards.

Thanks for sharing your video, very nicely done. Did you clean or changed the pc valve also?
What is that little forked tool with a screwdriver handle? I want one, but can find one anywhere...
Looks like a interior trim tool. Used for removing little plastic fasteners.
Nice video!! Should you replace the rear camshaft plugs while you’re in there? I’ve heard that they can leak pretty bad.
Do you remove the plugs as well?
Thank you!
Where's your shop. I'll bring you my '97.
Good deal, thanks..
Amazing video. Very informative. Thank you Sir. A++
How did you clean the half moons?
Do you use torque wrench for final tightening?
Do I need néw gaskets for the intake spider when doing this job?
What is the proper torque when tightening the valve cover bolts? I just cracked mine 🙁
I have a 2003 Tacoma 2.4L ( 2RZ-FE)
I have a small leak on my 1999 tacoma 2.4 16 valve engine...... Any suggestions on what it might be?? Videos??

What exactly is the “half moon” part?
