I am from Appalachia. My dad's family were moonshiners from the 1890's and still are. This is a true vision of our life....I still drink moonshine and love my life. This song brings back so many memories ever time I hear it, which is almost daily.....

Scots / Irish, actually, both sides, and some were Protestants that had come through Northern Ireland and the Siege of Inniskillen. Hard, tough folks. And I think of as more descended from the original Bluegrass than modern Country (but that's also true for lots of Outlaw stuff).
      Anyway, great tune.

Heck of a story. A young Appalachian mountain man came from a line of moonshiners. Both his dad and grand dad made and ran moonshine. A federal agent went missing while investigating his granddaddy. In his father's time, his dad died in a crash, (while in a chase with the cops), while running a weekly load of moonshine to Knoxville. The young man joins the Army as soon as he turns of age, because during the Vietnam war, they drafted the white trash first where he was from anyway. He wound up serving 2 tours of duty during the Vietnam war, where he learned a lot of 'tricks' (boobytraps), from the enemy, and decided to grow weed instead of running moonshine, since his family was already infamously known for making and running 'shine' by the cops/feds. The story ends with the DEA spotting his weed growing in the hollow down Copperhead Road, from a chopper, and the young man 'puts to use' what he learned from the enemy, (boobytraps), and what he he learned about combat while serving in Vietnam. He took off screaming due to post traumatic stress disorder and engaged himself in a war with the DEA. The end of the story is left to the imagination as to how it all ends. Great song and story. Glad you liked it too. Steve Earle e
    awesome.

Many living in Appalachia have Scotch-Irish heritage. These ancestors brought with them a love of freedom, a strong sense of family, great music and the ability to make the best moonshine. That spirit lingers with their descendants, and there are still a few roads in remote hollows (hollars) you might do well to avoid unless you are kin or close friend. Great song that conveys the spirit of a long history of a great people.

Exactly. I’m Scotch/Irish too and my Scottish ancestors came to VA in the 1600s. Before the Civil War, Scottish and Irish mostly settled the South so the pipes in this song is a nod to our families that settled there back then. I’m from Kansas but my pre Civil War roots are from KY and VA. I am also proudly related to a veteran of the Revolution who was at Yorktown when he was 17 years old.

They were farmers (and maybe a moonshiner or two) It had to be a hard life. When I heard the pipes in 'Copperhead Road' I thought of those hardy people. Have always had an affinity for this song. My Dad worked construction when I was growing up and work was slow in cold weather, so Dad ran Moonshine for a local moonshiner. He'd make runs from Tennessee to Chicago, Illinois to deliver moonshine to special customers. Everyone around where we lived knew better than to venture into the hills close by. Moonshiners didn't like unexpected visitors.

He blends US and Scottish hillbilly legacy instrumentals and story telling to produce a ballad that is pure gold. As a native of Appalachia, I think hillbillies from both sides of the Atlantic can appreciate it. Steve Earle is a tremendous artist. I wish I’d learned of him when I was younger. This region of the U.S. in the Appalachian Mountains was settled by immigrants of Scottish, Irish, English and German descent. These settlers brought with them a deep rooted sense of family and traditions. And it has stayed that way for generations. Just like there are pockets & regions across the U.S. where other ethnicities migrated to. So it wouldn't be that strange to think bagpipes and even the mandolin found their way into bluegrass or country music. Steve lived in Tennessee so he was familiar with the area & culture.

This song really hits me since I knew a lot of Vietnam vets who got hooked into the drug scene, many of them due to PTSD. And a lot of this song pertains to what they told me they were involved in. I'm a Vietnam era vet as well, and disabled also, but many of them self-medicated with drugs, which I did not completely understand at the time. Many of them died shortly after Vietnam, either from suicide or from accidents due to driving under the influence. A very dark period in our nation's history.

I love this one! I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains and I’m pretty sure my father ran shine in his younger days. After Vietnam, growing pot became a major source of income for many, taking the place of moonshine. Moonshine is now legal in some Appalachian states. The Irish and Scottish blood runs deep back in those hills. Even though we are many generations away from the ancestors that settled this land, the bagpipes still stir our blood.

Several people have pointed out the Scotch-Irish influence in Appalachia. The Scotch-Irish were a major part in the founding of our country. My ancestors came to the US from Scotland in the 1600s and they ended up in rural Kentucky. The great Civil War general Robert E. Lee was once asked which soldiers in his army were the best ones and he said the Scotch-Irish because they had the pluck of the Irish and the stubbornness of the Scottish.

Very interesting! The guitar in this seems familiar but I don't remember the song, which is odd because it's from 1988.
So instead of Moonshining like his daddy and granddaddy he came home and started growing Marijuana after seeing how it was done in the jungles of Vietnam.
A blend of southern rock, slight blues, outlaw country and a touch of Celtic Folk. It makes sense because the Irish/Scottish started forming colonies in Texas(with permission from Mexico as it was their territory at the time)as early as 1828(and other parts of the south before that)and that is where I just read he was from.

Here's a little story on seeing him live, since ya asked.
My wife & I went to see Hank Williams, Jr.(which you need to listen to if haven't ever listened to him). in 1988-89 time-frame. There was a popular band that was supposed to open for him but cancelled out, which we weren't aware of.
Right before the show was to start, Hank, Jr. comes out and announces the opening act cancelled and this young up and comer Steve Earl was going to open for him. Sensing the disappointment from the crowd, he continues on how he knows the guy from Texas and how good he is and he'll be a star himself soon. Going on we'll be glad we heard him and it'll be a great night.
Well, Steve Earl comes out and just tears the place up with music and a sound all his own with the crowd loving it.
He only played a few songs due to the situation, and held Copperhead Road for his last song.
Maybe a quarter of a way through the song, I looked at my wife and told her this was going to be a hit and we'll be hearing it a lot.
Needless to say, the next day the song was on the radio and has been since.
He set the bar high for Hank, Jr. that night, and no, he didn't disappoint either.

Steve Earl is a Bad-Ass!! You either get/love him or you don’t. This is so American culturally-moonshine-Vietnam trauma-souped up cars running from the law-but I’m glad you got it!! Did you notice “ holler” for the word hollow? W. VA, VA, KY. Thanx for this. I had requested wth many others. Do Guitar Town. Enjoy.

The song talks about moonshine (corn liquor), but it changes to growing marijuana. As an American from the "Emerald-Triangle" of Northern California, pretty much, east of the Rocky Mountains, they just grow hay...

This song holds a special place in my heart, we live in this area so it always brings me home if I away and hear it. My papaw also spent a year in state prison down in Alabama himself, for running moonshine.

Johnny Come Lately and Devils Right Hand are a must. Along with Guitar Town. Steve Earl is one of the greatest under appreciated country rock artists of all time.

You might check out Steve's late son, Justin Townes Earle. Personal favorite of his is Harlem River Blues.
Saw this video when it first came out on MTV, back in the day when MTV actually played music. At the time, I wondered if they realized that they had just played country music 🤣
Steve had a problem with heroin addiction in the 90s,, but so far seems to be staying clean, Anything fo his is worth a listen.

Steve Earle is incredible to hear live. I went to see Hank Williams Jr., not even knowing who the opening ast would be. As soon as I heard his voice I was so excited that he was there. That was when Copperhead Road had just come out. Earle is an incredible vocalist and truly gifted songwriter. You should definitely check out his other music, one I really like, a dark horse that doesn't get much in the way of airplay, is The Devil's Right Hand. There are many others as well. Steve Earle is one of the best.

Additional Steve Earle songs I'd recommed would be Guitar Town, Nowhere Road, The Devil's Right Hand, I Ain't Ever Satisfied, Goodbye's All We Got Left. Steve is an incredible song writer and you won't go wrong with any of these suggestions

The people who settled the Appalachian area of USA, were primarily people from Ulster, Northern Ireland. Since most were Scots, the skill of whiskey making was brought over by these people in 18th century. In the 1920"s America had prohibition on drinking alcohol, so the moonshine makers had to try & outrun law enforcement officers, that's why he references the big block dodge engine tuning. This is where Nascar racing got it's orgins. Also these people were the 1st to bring music in the mainstream, where they were playing music on radio stations, The 1st record was made in Appalachian, sang by The Carter Family.

I saw him live I think around ten or eleven years ago now. He and his band are no surprise great live. Really cool show.
He’s a very talented artist in general though with lots of excellent songs. A few off hand to recommend: Someday, The Devil’s Right Hand and Mercenary Song.
