Tesla Model 3 Hypermiles On UK Country Roads, Does It Make A Difference?

  • If I used the same amount of electricity to cook a roast dinner? How many miles would that translate to in powering a Tesla Model 3? Can you hypermile a Tesla Model 3 to get even further?
    Thats looked at in this video, where I'll compare what Tesla claims the MPGe is of the Model 3, versus what it can actually do under normal driving conditions, then we will go all out to increase the range, by doing the same route, but this time hypermiling to see how much further we can go.
    The limit is 5kWh of battery used on each trip, accurately measured using a diagnostic tool. Can anybody beat what I get? Let me know in the comments? Could this be a new electric car challenge :)
    The second attempt will see me adjusting my driving style, aerowheels, tyre pressures, excess weight and obviously the big one the effect the HVAC has on the Tesla Model 3's range.
    How much further can you take a Model 3 by hypermiling on just 5kWh of electricity? Time to find out!
    These is my Amazon Affiliate link to the diagnostic tool and adapter:
    ScanTool OBDlink MX+ Bluetooth OBD-II Diagnostic Tool: amzn.to/3blowqP
    OHP OBD2 Adapter Harness for Tesla Model 3 & Y 2019 to 2021 Build: amzn.to/3eCXwVR
    (WARNING: You may void your warranty or damage your vehicle if installed incorrectly - seek expert advice before attempting to install)
    The App that then was the companion to these was TesLax on iOS, but ScanMyTesla does a similar/better job on Android.

    Thank you for doing this very informative video. I have found that there is a significant difference in mileage depending on whether the battery is at ambient temperature or near an 80 degree F operating temperature. Did you observe the battery temperatures for the runs and can one elevate the battery temperature to an optimal point before beginning the trip?

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 роки тому

      You can monitor battery temperature through it. I did look and it didn't really change much between runs, but not sure whether it was at optimal or not. The only way I could think of elevating the battery temperature before setting on would be to program that you are going to a supercharger so it starts to pre-condition the battery, or start to charge it. Either way though I imagine its going to use more energy than it saves. You could schedule departure on your console so that the battery finishes charging just before you set off, to have it as warm as possible

      @kkitzhaber 3 роки тому +1

      @@TeslaTorque based on my experience, 2.77 kWhr of regen is not realistic on a 4.5 kWhr journey. Your trip was not particularly hilly. There was no major elevation change. There didn't seem to be much stop and go traffic. Based on the app, Regen was 2/3 of 4.5 kWhr, which would mean you're gaining 2 miles worth of regenerative energy for every 3 miles you travel. Based on what i can see in the video, that's why I questioned the accuracy of the regen calculation. On the energy graph, you should see 2 miles of green regen for every 3 miles of orange. Do you see that on the graph?

    I have recently bought and fitted an OBD2. There is a video available by another UA-camr showing how to put the car to sleep before inserting the unit. As I have Android I use Scan my Tesla. My only problem is the difficulty of neatly providing power to the phone whilst mounting it at dashboard level. I have a 2021 MiC Model 3 which has the very neat cordless charging pads. Whilst this is a good upgrade, the USB cables are inside the front console locker and it isn't easy to route USB cables from there up to dashboard level without the cable looking a mess. With the pre 2021 Model 3 it was possible to find a hidden exit to the console locker. The new centre console is sealed. If I could even find a hidden 12v source close to the steering wheel shroud that would be an alternative. If anyone has any ideas on this I would appreciate it.

    i went out and i put car in to sport mode and went to the same place as i had done on standard mode
    The simple fact is that the modes make no difference it is more dependant on how you drive as in standard and sport mode i got the same 5.6 miles to a kW. the bigger difference came to the display i had in sports mode.
    For most tests you can not match what happens on the road. nor get speed to be the same all the time. the saving may be just down to your mind set to not be as aggressive on the accelerator.
    for me the first miles i do the car is charging up the 12v for the 1st apx 10 miles after that is just replacing what is used. this has effect on the miles to a kW. which can for this be in the 4 miles a kW once this is done the miles then climb up to end with most trips at the 5.4 to 5.6 with mixed driving.

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 роки тому

      yep. I just find it easier to do slow controlled acceleration in chill mode, where as standard it’s easy to overdo it and use more power. but you’re right, if you accelerate the same, the mode will make no difference. it’s just harder to do it slow in standard, the temptation gets the better of me 😂

    You should be charging to full running this experiment then using an evse charger with energy meter to charge to full again. This method probably understates consumption by 15% or so since the energy meter in the car doesnt measure charging losses which you still need to pay for

    • @TeslaTorque
      @TeslaTorque  3 роки тому

      I'm not quite sure what you mean? I would have thought that if I started with say 35kWh of battery on the diagnostic tool, then drove until the 30kWh that would have been a 5 kWh drain regardless of the source? I understand if I was just using the Model 3 wh/mile as it wouldn't consider stationary/phantom drain? My aim was to see the energy consumption on a trip and how driving technique could improve it, not necessarily say over the entire week, which like you said would then include phantom drain and would skew figures.
      The diagnostics gives you a breakdown of total discharge of the battery in kWh, versus total kWh used driving, so I guess the difference between the two would be the phantom drain and for an MPGe over the lifetime, would be the total discharge/odometer

    • @SCfan84
      @SCfan84 3 роки тому

      @@TeslaTorque This 5kwh is a measurement of battery to wheels. from the point of view of cost you are paying for kwh from the wall so it will take more than 5kwh from the wall to give you 5kwh from the battery. The difference should be stationary loss like you said as well as the charging losses and just generally speaking the wall meter on something like a chargepoint should be more accurate. The epa numbers for example are supposed to be wall to wheels. I'm curious about this because based on the Tesla forums people have been seeing like 20-30% worse than what is displayed in the car measured this way.
