Is The Tesla Model 3 Still Cheaper In Todays Energy Crisis?
Energy prices going CRAZY around the world, impacting on fuel and electricity prices in the US, UK & Australia, so how much does it cost to drive in these places now for Electric & Combustion cars?
More importantly what will be the breakeven point be when it doesn't become cheaper to drive electric.

Running cost for an entire year of a Tesla Model 3 - ua-cam.com/video/1PtnGVvZEx8/v-deo.html
In this video a full breakdown of last years cost per mile for combustion and electric, compared to current prices, with predictions of where it has to be to be the same. Australia and USA are pretty safe, but the UK is not far off in some circumstances.
Prices for fuel used in March 2022 were:
UK Price per Litre £1.80
USA Price per Gallon $4.17
Australia Price per Litre $1.83
Exchange rates used:
£1 = US$1.31
£1 = AU$1.80
£1 = €1.19
To work out fuel cost per mile and average MPG was used for each country:
USA 25MPG / 9.3L/100km
UK 52MPG / 5.4L/100km
Australia 25MPG / 11.1/100km
The MPGe for electricity cost per mile was 141MPG or 1.67L/100km (or 24kWh/100miles) which is the efficiency of my 2019 Tesla Model 3. Some MPGs of EVs are in the low 100MPGe, so electricity cost per mile varies significantly between brands.

I might be a typical buyer. In two years time we plan on updating our 2016 Peugeot 108. The prospective car is the soon-to-be relaunched Kia Picanto, which costs an estimated £16,500. After watching a couple of videos about Teslas it looked at a well known sales platform and a nice grey Model 3 was listed at that price. Unfortunately it wont fit on our tiny driveway and we can't park directly outside, only opposite. To top it all off it hasn't even a hatch, how many people are there like me?

The comment I saw from “Tesla”, reported on Electrek, was that 10% was an efficiency gain relative to the 19” sport wheels, not relative to the 18” wheels without the caps. I have the 19 sport wheels, and they’re awful. Size reduces range, but so does the fact that Tesla gives you two with turbines that are “backwards”, simply to allow them to use one wheel mold. It makes the 19s much worse vs the aero wheels, with or without caps

Please don't deliberately abuse your EV battery on a lease. Sure, it won't affect you, but remember that if EV ownership is going to take off in the UK we need good quality used EVs that are affordable. If all the ex lease cars have degraded batteries from over charging (or pointless wheel spinning at the lights) it will make people turn back to fossil cars when they find the range on their used EV is bad.

It's funny reading all the comments from people hating electric cars but they generally have never even driven one. I had two Audi A5s over six years and I loved them. I got a new job farther away and I was filling up my tank every week which just wasn't sustainable. My sister got an ID4 and within a month her husband bought another one, they were costing them 40 euro each to run a month with a home charger at night. So I kept a lookout on DoneDeal for Teslas with just saving money in mind. I found two great deals eventually and got one of them. The first time I was in a Tesla or an electric car was the test drive. I was buying the Model 3 white but I remember looking at it and not being sure but I said it's going to save me a lot of money so go with it. Two hours down the road I was completely in love with the thing, the speed, so fast all I could do is laugh. I realised I was driving a computer. I honestly had no clue what I was buying, it was like the first day I started driving all over again. I could never go back to diesel and as I said I loved my A5s but a Tesla is a complete other level. I can't wait to get the long range in a years time. Now when I look at it or get into it I see the beautiful white sports car it is and which is functional and then it does a million other things. It's all positive except the range but in a few years that will have hugely increased. If you love computers or cars you will love a Tesla. I love when someone stops beside me and we have a mini drag race when the light goes green and the Tesla destroys them. The take off is like a plane or a motorbike, you have the speed of motorbike and the safety of a car. Everyday I find out something else knew about it that I love. The looks I'd be getting when I'm in it because it's such a beautiful car. I've told my friends who love cars, buy one now because I know they'll love it. The best thing I have ever bought in my whole life bar none. That acceleration makes you feel excited like a child. I really didn't know just like a lot of those who are here writing all negative about them. Go get a test drive and then form an opinion. I'm not really a fan of Elon with how he fired all those people in Twitter even though economically he was right but he says it. His aim was to make something people truly love and he most certainly achieved it!

Added benefit of having aero wheels on is it protects the brake rotors from the elements. And considering that the Model 3 uses regen braking, that's a good thing. If the rotors were exposed to the elements you can guarantee that there will be some rust on the rotors, especially when the brakes are not physically being used.

With Tesla the most likely culprit for phantom drain is sentry mode. Turn that off and it will lose very little.

We live in Southern Australia and we have solar. In the summer, the cost to charge an EV is close to zero, particularly on a long cloudless day. Winter not so much, but we have a power bank and charge our battery overnight on the cheaper rate.

Electric batteries are not the future. They aren’t much better for the environment - where do you think the electricity comes from let alone the lithium mines. Hydrogen fuel cells are going to replace these. I would never fork out for a car that gives you range anxiety like this. Sitting waiting for your car to charge - seems more regressive than progressive

I really don't get this anxiety part. With an ICE car, you also need to fuel in time. Just like with an EV where you have to charge in time before running out. I guess there is an argument for the waiting part, altough I disagree there aswell. But especially this 'anxiety' argument seems so strange to me. Especially with the amount of chargers available nowadays. Tesla's navigation even guides and tells you where to charge if you can't make ur destination.

It’s easy I am 200% a geek, with a Tesla I get to drive a computer (dream come true). With the plus that I actually save money monthly vs my previouse diesel vehicle. I have not selected EV for any narrative but only for my above reason

    • @jjaus

Batteries are recyclable. Hydrogen is great, but doesn't grow on trees. It needs energy to create and distribute. ICE owners have to fill their cars regularly whereas EV don't. Maybe one trip a year. The rest of the time you're in bed asleep when your car is charging off peak. It's MUCH cheaper than petrol and unlike petrol and hydrogen vehicles, virtually zero maintenance, including brakes.

@@jjaus There won’t be enough raw materials for EVs for all and because of that they will fade out. Copper, lithium, cobalt. But of course we have to phase out ICE

    • @BeesBonsai
      @BeesBonsai 11 місяців тому

@@danparsons2765there are other type of batteries being developed, this is a lazy argument lol. Graphine and even sodium batteries have potential. Good thing about EVs is that power can come from almost any source: solar, wind, nuclear, natural gas, coal, etc… Right now, sure, the battery materials needed are not exactly friendly to the environment…but the potential is there.
