On July 10, we're hosting a special live-streaming Q&A event with Grammy award-winning producer/engineer Jacquire King to talk about both LUNA and Sphere. Drew Mazurek, Universal Audio's Technical Marketing Specialist and early-adopter of Sphere, will join us for the inside scoop right here on UA-cam.
Sphere and LUNA are both innovative recording systems that reshape the audio landscape. We invite you to find out how they integrate with each other, what the benefits are, and why now is the right time to check them out.
The Sphere® system consists of a high-precision, dual-channel microphone, which when paired with the included, cross-platform Sphere plug-in (UAD-2, AAX DSP, AAX Native, VST, AU) accurately models the response of a wide range of classic mics. The exacting models incorporate transient response, harmonics, proximity effect, and multi-dimensional polar response. Thanks to Townsend Labs' exhaustive and curated study of classic microphones, the Sphere system currently brings the soul of 30 of the world's most revered microphones to life.
    With Sphere you can:
    ✔ Get a world-class microphone collection of over 30 stunning-sounding mics
✔ Cover an enormous range of applications with a single microphone
✔ Change mic type, polar pattern, and other microphone characteristics, even after tracking!
✔ Audition the sound of different microphones without tiring the performer
✔ Record in stereo from a single microphone
✔ Reduce bleed, undesirable room coloration, and other common issues using Off-Axis Correction™

Just from the first couple of minutes, I'm so glad to be part of this revolution! Julian and everyone from TL are so extremely humble and kind. This has become my go to mic for everything I fit it on. The only thing I don't like about it is that I don't have enough of them. With the UAD plugin and Console/Luna, tracking is so much easier on the artist (and me), and the quality from things like pre-production demos that were thrown together in minutes sound incredible. Yes, the mic is amazing, but the plugins are what is revolutionary. I want to see that continue to grow, so I hope they start taking a more grassroots marketing approach, because there are a lot of people who are far more influential in the mass market than these big names talking about the original mics with the L22 in the frame. And here, they"re mostly just pimping Luna. Luna is such a small leap compared to what the L22 is, and it was sad that it stole the thunder at NAMM when the L22 won a TEC award. THAT'S what everyone should have been screaming about at NAMM! They could be selling 10 times the amount of these if they piggyback on the large UA-cam viewership of channels well known for mic comparisons. These guys sell mics. Also, every studio I've taken one to has ended up buying at least one. The mics sell themselves way better than these big names do.
Jaquire's had a Sphere L22 for two years and never tracked an acoustic guitar with it?! This is where the L22 is better than anything in anyone's collection. Getting an amazing sound on an acoustic guitar with the L22 takes minutes, and there are things you can do (like flip the mics on a duplicate track and blend in character from many different mics in different areas of the stereo field) that create unprecedented depth, clarity, warmth, and richness while avoiding boxiness with acoustic guitars. So sad these guys aren't putting this stuff to good use and are still doing things the old way. At least more people are moving away from Pro Tools now. There's a lot to learn from these guys, and watching the bottlenecks in their workflows can be some of the most valuable info to take away from them.
I'm sure grateful to all of these brilliant people at UAD and Townsend Labs. Because of their dedication to excellence, I have access to sonic landscapes that are even beyond what I would have dreamed possible when I first got into music on the other side of the mic 35 years ago! I couldn't even afford to store all of the compressors, EQs, mics, and everything else that I can now easily fit into a rucksack! Much love.

Hi, thanks for the vid. Can someone please show me the workflow for Bouncing a Sphere track down to stereo and then on to mono tracks so that I can actually pan these tracks? I saw the guy do it on the video but can seem to find the “bounce feature” he mentions in LUNA?

LOL! 01:12:00 Julian to Jacquire: "Is that something you've tried yet?" Jacquire: "I'm asking myself why I haven't tried that yet!" Right?! He's using a Mojave ma-200 to mic an acoustic guitar when he has an L22?!? I'm asking myself why no one's making a bigger deal out of the Soyuz 017T emulation. I've never heard that work of art before, but the emulation has a spectacular sounding quality. It's like today's version of a C12-instant classic! Townsend Labs guys, seriously, get this into the hands of some people who will show it off. I'll list some again. Mike DelGaudio, the Booth Junkie. Wytse from White Sea Studio. Warren Huart from Produce Like a Pro. These guys actually USE the mics and their audiences actually BUY the mics they recommend. So far, the TL marketing strategy has been to give them away to guys who let them collect dust because they are too jaded to know what an amazing tool they have in their hands, ask them questions they can't answer, and have them talk about the original mic with the L22 in the frame. Like Drew and everyone else I know who's a vintage/classic mic owner that's actually used the L22, Jacquire would probably be selling some mics that are now really just underperforming relics compared to the L22. Hmm… Underperforming relics is a good way to describe both the mics and the people who are willing to mess with all the hassles that using the L22 eliminates. I've noticed more vintage mics listed at more reasonable prices on Reverb lately, so maybe they are selling a few of these, but I still can't believe that this mic's been around for almost 3 years now and these large studios don't have cases of these things around to use as a goto for literally almost anything. They don't work well as a lav mic, but other than that …

"So far, the TL marketing strategy has been to give them away to guys who let them collect dust." - This is absolutely not true. We do not give mics away for free, ever, and all our endorsees love and use the mics regularly. Again, I truly appreciate your enthusiasm and suggestions, but I will not discuss our marketing strategy in public. Please get in touch directly via any private channel. Thanks, Julian

Even though I know I'm extremely late for the Live Q&A, I would really appreciate it if anyone could answer one of my questions.
Yesterday I recorded a vocal using SPHERE for the very first time.
    I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE EXPERIENCE!
Well... my question is in regards to Melodyne.
What should be the order here in order for me to use Melodyne to pitch correct a vocal?
    This is what I did:
I tracked the vocal in Logic Pro X using the SPHERE plugin in Console only to listen to the source (not commit) and then I copied the plugin in Logic afterward to pick the best model for the song's context (It was just piano and voice).
Once I found a model that I thought was the best for that configuration I bounced it in place using just the SPHERE plugin in the track.
I muted and hid the original track and then started to work with the bounced one, using Melodyne as the first plugin in the chain.
    Was that correct?
Is there a better way to do this?
I am open to suggestions... please.

Referring to the question about a Sphere model in the Unison preamp: is it possible that they aren’t referring to the Sphere mic system and instead they mean the Sphere mic preamp from the vintage Sphere console? This could be modeled by Unison and It has recently been re released in 500 format and I was was looking for a vid about that when I came here. Watched the whole vid anyway! Haha cheers!

I`m waiting for my L22 and I was wondering if a client that do not have the Mic itself could install and use the basic software if I send him the raw stereo file ?
Also how many mic do we get free with the Mic ?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому +2

Hi Michel, the core collection that comes with the mic currently contains 30 mic models. It's intended as a growing collection: We started with just 11 mics and we've been adding more mics over time. Regarding your first question: The native installer (for AU, VST, and AAX) is available entirely for free and without copy protection. Anybody, including your clients and collaborators, can download it from our website. Simply create an account to get started: bit.ly/38JcEMQ
