  • In this brand new original series, KRK asks Jacquire King for answers to some of the most frequently-asked questions from recording neophytes and veterans alike, and to provide priceless tips and tricks from behind the scenes of the record-making process.
In this episode of "Sound Advice With Jacquire King," Grammy Award-winning producer, engineer, and mixer Jacquire King discusses the subject of microphone placement. Starting with the drum kit, he focuses on simple setups like the Glyn Johns drum miking technique that can be expanded upon when more resources are available. Aiming and the "focus" of the microphones are covered, including for other instruments such as acoustic guitar and electric guitar amplifiers. Suggestions on how far away to place the microphones from the sound source are offered, along with tips for using multiple microphones on a single guitar or amp, as well as valuable advice on how to avoid comb filtering and phase cancellation when using multiple microphones on a single source. Vocal mic setups are also covered. Tips on how to select a mic that best suits the vocalist are included. The value of windscreens and pop filters for reducing plosives, and how they can be used to regulate the singer's distance from the microphone are also discussed, as are mic preamp and compressor selection.

he mentioned comb filtering when offsetting the two microphones for guitar recording. can someone here explain why that would happen? i understand the issue of phasing but not sure i understand why offsetting the mics would cause comb filtering... thanks!

If you understand the issue of phasing then you'd understand why offsetting the mics would cause this issue.
