    Julian - Thanks for covering the 180 mode - 2 singers question so thoroughly. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks so much for putting this together. Excited for more in the future. Cheers

    Big thanks. This was very helpful. "No Regrets: Only Choices" fits this mic perfectly,. I've told a lot of people that the only other mics I foresee myself buying in the future are special use mics, like an SM57 for a snare or a lav mic. I never thought I'd actually see someone using it AS a lav mic! Well done, Chris! Best laugh in a while! I'm disappointed that the L22 community lives on FB. I know it's a lot easier to throw up a FB page than to manage a forum, but hopefully the Townsend Labs site will open its own soon, because I won't do FB anymore. If there was anything that might make me break my FB boycott, it's the L22. My biggest question is why does this have (at the time of writing) only 386 views and 19 likes? I've had this mic for about a month now, and can honestly say the hype around this system is nothing compared to what it delivers. I can't figure out why this hasn't found its spot in the market yet. Could the "big" names be unimpressed because they can grab an original when they want it and probably don't have to pay for maintenance? In that case, they need to spend some time working with the Sphere plugins in a mix and there'll suddenly be a lot of vintage mics on Reverb. And maybe it's just a bit too costly for much of the entry-level market. It seems to be falling through the cracks, so we have to spread the word! This is probably the most revolutionary thing I've seen come along since OS X, and I can't think of a better investment. Seriously, this mic is an instant classic. Why do I feel like I'm the only one doing backflips over this thing? I think good ol' Stevie Slate is selling that VMS like hotcakes, and that thing is, to be kind, remarkably more downmarket than the price differential justifies.

      Rest assured that you're not the only one doing backflips over Sphere. There are lots of big names on board already and it keeps growing. UA-cam stats aren't everything, my friend. - Julian

      Thanks, XS. We can always use more help spreading the word about Sphere, although it is already one of the top-selling large condenser microphones on the market and we have more and more high profile users joining the club. At the same time, we are a relatively new company and many people have not heard of us.

    Re: Studio One: Converting Stereo to Mono:
    1. The first thing to do is change the channel into a mono channel. This is done by simply pressing the stereo/mono icon button next to the speaker symbol on the track's header. Once pressed, it will show a mono symbol; if you play the track, you will see that the meters now only show a single meter reading. You will still see a stereo wave file.
    2. The next thing to do is to convert the audio file from stereo to mono. This is done by using Bounce Selection command, either by using the shortcut [CMD]+[B]/[CTRL]+[B] or by right-clicking on the audio file and choosing the "Bounce Selection" command.
    Hope this helps.

      Thanks so much for chiming in. This is a great suggestion and I'll try it on my own system. We'll make sure to share this with other Studio One users. - Julian

    Love this mic and UAD. Question: How can we record vocal compression on the way in, while not committing to the Sphere choices (so we can adjust later in the DAW).

    Julian, where did you get those wood panel slats in the background?

    1)I have a question about what is the technology on the proximity effect ?? Compression , Eq ??

    • @ctown000
      @ctown000 4 роки тому +1

      I'll try to answer as best as I can. The proximity effect modeling works by deriving directional and distance information from the two capsules in the L22. Changing the proximity effect control in the plug-in only effects directional mic types. When the pattern is set to omni there is no proximity effect just like with conventional microphones.
      Can you give more detail about your question regarding compression and EQ? I can say that the Sphere modeling responds to EQ and compression just as a conventional mic does.

    does it mean I need two preamps and two compressors and two Eqs to get the Townsend work if I choose the analog gear? And that doubles the expense actually...is there a solution for it other than using the plugins?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому

      Definitely yes regarding the preamps. With any other processing, you could run a mono hardware insert to go through your analog gear, but of course that would have to happen after recording. It would also add another DA/AD conversion loop. - Julian

    Do I need to insert the Sphere plugin in Console when using the UAD Monitor method before recording to Pro Tools? I recorded a bit of my 6 year old singing into the mic without the plugin in Console and directly into Pro Tools thinking that I can just insert the Sphere, Ocean Way, or Bill Putnam plugins during mixing.

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому

      If you're monitoring through Console you'll want to have the Sphere plug-in inserted. Otherwise you'll be monitoring a very left-heavy signal with the front of the mic on the left side and the back of the mic on the right. You can always center-pan them for a mono omni pick-up, but generally I'd advise to run the Sphere plug-in on whatever signal you're monitoring. It'll also give you the option to change out mic models for a more inspiring sound. - Julian

      @@Townsendlabs Thanks for your reply Julian. Yes, that's what I noticed when you mention it around the 19:40 mark of the video (more signal from the left channel). I just wasn't sure of what was the proper way to use the plugin because I would be using the plugin twice if I use it during mixing (once in Console during recording and once in Pro Tools during mixing). I'll use the method you mention.
      Would I need to do the same with the Ocean Way and Bill Putnam plugins or would I only select either of those during mixing in Pro Tools? Are these plugins interchangeable (ie: if I use Ocean Way in Console, can I use Bill Putnam during mixing in Pro Tools or would the sound be adversely affected)?

      Ramon Feliz not really, you’d want the actual model of a Manley Gold.
