    just got the sphere, would love to see a session where you record a solo acoustic guitar to fill up entire sound field as the only instrument in the song, using the single or 180 or dual blended mic emulations. Have seen some videos from from UAD but the acoustic was recorded to fit in a mix. I would happily volunteer the playing.

    • @George-Moulos
      @George-Moulos 10 місяців тому +1

      You've probably discovered since this post, but if you want to really fill out the stereo field then your best bet is going to be multi-mic recording. I could never get that feeling of playing in a nice room with a single mic - regardless of what room reverbs I used. I've found great results with recording acoustic guitar in an ORTF configuration but this is for songs with other instruments (so it can afford to lose a bit of fullness in the centre). Regardless of what widening techniques you use, a single mic can't really go that wide without affecting fullness - it tends to just end up louder & thinner. Mid-Side recording with (e.g.) this mic in figure of eight and a nice centred cardioid mic gives you tons of control with width and fullness!

    Great introduction to using the sphere microphones. I am impressed with Drew's overview. I loved the various social media videos/discussions on the Apollo Twin X and Sphere DLX so much I went through my wife's approval process to jump to this new recording toolchain [yea, she is my sweetheart]. Going from 10 years of Audition DAW and lower cost mics to the apollo tools so far is a big zero. The intro tool videos seem to jump from install to license to UAD main tool set [console, connect, and meter/control panel] - then bam - there's the cool plugins and sphere all working in console.
    My problem is: how to have success with my first setup? Currently, the startup videos suggested for my UAD toolchain after installation then jump to showing several "things" loaded already, or the presenter skips several mouse clicks while verbalizing cryptic buttons to show mic output. For me, after two days of using my UAD products, I see input working fine, but damn, I only get the stuff to work to the actual mic track showing up once in a while. All other times I am wondering how you guys really start from a blank slate and get into a position to use this great tutorial!?

    • @ronfredericksbiophysicslab9984
      @ronfredericksbiophysicslab9984 5 місяців тому

      Update: after watching Drew's video and reading the comments here and on the forum page for this video - I think I now understand how to follow along with the video from my own apollo twin x + UAD console and even get the mic input to Auditon natively (and probably via Thunderbolt after UAD Console too). Other videos will likely be easier now as well. For new users (and several others, as expressed in comments), the idea of the Sphere Mic plugin location in the Inserts area and a Unison preamp at the top of the tool chain blocked my learning curve. I makes total sense now. But a getting started video should probably point this out as a feature of the UAD toolchain right up front. Then, for the "new new new" folks frazzled from the install process on Apple Silicon + iLok + various products all at once - my last hangup was that I had the Mute enabled for 3 hours of fiddling time. I should have known that!

  • @michaelharvey1461
    @michaelharvey1461 Рік тому +5

    In the video, you note that if you have a Unison preamp emulation enabled in Console, that that processing always is printed to the DAW when recording, but that the Sphere mic emulation can just be used for monitoring while tracking, and then played with in the DAW. In the real world, though, the microphone itself would come before the preamp. With the workflow Drew demos, the post tracking processing being dialed in via the Sphere plugin would be being applied to audio that was already printed through the preamp emulation. Again, in the real world, the sounds actually captured in the studio were always the result of the combined contribution of the specific mic (first) running through a specific preamp (second) and then to tape or whatever. So my question is whether there is a way to recreate that chain with Sphere and Unison. The only way I can think to do this would be to record completely dry and then play with the mic modeling in the Sphere plugin and then route that output back to the Apollo Unison preamp to hear the combined result. I'm curious whether there's a best practice around this that I'm overlooking. Wonderful video tutorial, though!!

    Just one critical remark here: Going off-axis doesn't de-ess in a natural way. That's like using an EQ to de-ess (which by itself reduces desired clarity in the vowels as well), while also turning up the noise floor, and if you're actually turning the mic, adding unwanted room reflections.

    Fantastic video Drew. I know you said you will discuss the stereo option in a future video - I would like to ask you about classical recordings with opera singers. I see often they use 2 mics (probably identical ones) that has a space between them. You seen it...I also seen a small mic they have in the middle probably for diction. Anyways, do you get the same effect using the stereo mode as you get recording opera singers where they use 2 mics? Of course they use this method often in a concert hall where they also capture the acoustics of the room they are in as I am in a closed vocal booth made of professional sound curtains. Can I still get that same effect adding a reverb that simulates a concert hall or theater? Thanks in advance --Josh

    Hi, I hope you’re well, I was wondering if there is somebody who may be able to offer me some help and advice to resolve some issues in having with the Sphere DLX. I only purchased the microphone yesterday, and I’ve started testing out some rough vocal and acoustic guitar at the same time. I am set up on a mono track in logic, but I keep getting a notification telling me ‘Identical Signal Levels Detected’, and that levels in the front (left) and rear ( right) channels are the same. It’s suggested the microphone’s calibration switch is on, but it isn’t, it’s switched to the on position. I’m obviously not doing something correctly. • @UniversalAudio
      @UniversalAudio  Рік тому +1

      Hi Alex, if you have a treated room, then we find Isosphere set to booth/room to be great, no need for a shield. If your room is not treated or you're "on the go", then you'll want one. There is no "correct" setting as preamps are a subtle and subjective part of the process. Just pick one and be sure not to drive it into full distortion and you'll be good to go!

    How can you record the Mic modeling after the fact if once you record through sphere the signal is mono? I want to record into Luna and just monitor the mic modeling and autotune, but it changes signal to mono in Luna which you can't use for adjusting the mic model. Is it committing the mic model no matter what? So confusing

    • @UniversalAudio
      @UniversalAudio  7 місяців тому

      Sounds like you may have UAD REC enabled in Console, which commits the Sphere processing and records a dual mono signal. Try using UAD MON instead, and make sure you're recording to a stereo channel in LUNA.

    Hello! I have to calibrate my Sphere with new Neve Portico 5211 pre Amp. When I calibrate the rear capsule (the mic2) I have to sing directly on the rear capsule or always in the front capsule and match the gain of both mic 1 and mic 2 at the same value? I don't understand the manual instructions.

    • @UniversalAudio
      @UniversalAudio  Рік тому +1

      Hi Alex, calibration mode sends the front capsule signal out of BOTH XLRs so that you can gain match the pres. So just put it in Cal mode, sing into the front of the mic and adjust the mic pres so they are the same, then turn off Cal mode.

    Great content ! I love my Sphere and Apollo, my question is: when using Unison doesn’t come before the sphere app? In that case does it affect the modeling algorithm? For those coming to this video late, the link in the comment by UA is now deprecated and only goes to a landing page. After tracking down the FAQ's new location, one finds the following answer: *_Yes, definitely. While we generally recommend that the Sphere plug-in be inserted first in the effects signal chain, good results can be achieved with a Unison plug-in placed before the Sphere plug-in. For optimum results, the Unison preamp should be set for cleaner sounds._*
      This answer doesn't exactly leave one brimming with confidence that Sphere and Unison always play well together. _Good results?_ While the raw Unison preamps make for a clean and lovely signal into the Sphere insert, isn't the whole point of Unison to provide a less than pristine, less clean, and the more colored input of traditional preamps? So is UA saying "you can still use your 1073 in the Unison slot, just keep a lid on it?"
      I'm gonna say that UA has been somewhat wishy-washy on this subject from the git-go. And I can understand why--current Apollo hardware has been around since long before their acquisition of Townsend Labs. And now the adopted child isn't exactly playing well with the blood child. Maybe a solution can be had with an Apollo firmware and Console update. But I suspect the problem is already baked into the Apollo's hardware design.
      If the problem is indeed already baked into the Apollo, UA could still pull a rabbit out of the hat... What if UA offered a dedicated, bus-powered, USB "Sphere Interface" for $69? It would have dual (pre-linked) inputs, a single DSP chip, and a single mic-level XLR output--that's it (except for maybe variable output impedance of the model mic?) Console could then implement a button for linking a given Unison slot to a USB Sphere Interface for plugin configuration. This would have the added benefit of freeing a valuable Apollo Unison input channel for other use.

  • @ori4068
    @ori4068 2 роки тому

    What does not make sense to me is why UA Is dropping two new mics modeling the 251 and the u87 for $5k+ but also marketing that the L22 modes the exact same mix for less than $1.5k. Would that not make one of them redundant and be a conflict of interestv?

    • @UniversalAudio
      @UniversalAudio  2 роки тому +1

      Different strokes for different folks! Some want/need the flexibility that Sphere offers while others prefer to keep it old school and use a classic (but modern) LDC, with or without tubes! Just like with the Standard Series mics, we want to offer a solution for all tastes and budgets. This is all win win for our users since they get to choose their tool while always knowing that it's backed by UA craftsmanship. Thanks for asking the question, it was a good one!!

      The plugin sums its output to dual mono, so if the DAW supports it, (Pro Tools does) you can simply select one of the inputs and you'll get a mono version of the mic model. This is NOT possible in the DAW I am showing, LUNA.
