Massa was never the same after this crash
The poor guy probably had some minor brain damage from that initial impact. That spring broke through his helmet. In one of his interviews he mentions he has no recollection of what happened. He is lucky to be alive.
Right, nut we can understand that.
Well it's difficult to say for sure. Mika Hakkinen went through an incident with much higher G-forces, cracked his skull and lost the hearing in his other ear, yet went on to win two world championships.
Guys.. listen to his podcast on the official F1 channel.
@@C3lloman Massa got a Spring to his head btw
I remember being 10 years old and seeing that crash. It is a terrible feeling as a racing fan for a driver not to respond.
Bro I also remember, I'm Brazilian and I'm a fan of him but after that he changed and never was the same again :(
I was 7 when I saw that, and I barelly remember to watching this with my dad after lunch.
I remember being 8 and watching Senna's crash.
I was terrified as well. I was 9 at the time.
I was 13. Now came back to watch how it went nack then because the memory popped in to my mind. I remember being really worried and stunned of how something like this could happen
Massa changed the helmet safety
Which sadly came at a personal cost for himself
That crash helmet still saved his life though. Those things were already great but this crash encouraged people to make them more resistant to all forms of impact, not just crashes
If he had the same helmet from the year before he could of been killed, the helmet he was wearing was the first carbon-fiber helmets made
@@dannywhite132 Yeah it still boggles my mind how a mobile rocket that can do 200mph did not have proper neck brace aka HANS before Mika's crash. Have you fucking seen the footage of his head/neck snapping? I'm surprised he's alive.
@@supercooled It makes me cringe to see crashes before ~1997. The head just wobles uncomfortably, and you can see it in almost every crash crashes. Mind blowing how we dont have much more deaths.
Whether or not it affected him as a driver, I'm glad he's alive, I'm glad he's healthy, and I'm glad he was able to come back to the sport.
Felipe is an all round great guy! a great example for all sportsman.
Did he suffer anything serious in long term?
@@akisalmenaho8473 luckily no
Many will say he was unlucky throughout his career and its true, but he was very lucky to survive this accident and not die.

This crash basically ended his career. Despite retiring after 2017, he really wasn’t the same after that horrible wreck
Como o Nelson Piquet disse"Felipe Massa ficou 1 segundo mais lentos depois do acidente".
The way the marshalls were acting around Massa i think they thought he was dead!
I'm sure I did too when I watched it live.
Dead or not he should have been ejected immediately. Those marshalls were just scared to be close to a reving car i guess
Marshalls, normally, are NOT allowed to check the drivers especially if they are unconscious. Only EMTs or Meds are permitted to verify the pilot's condition.
In big motorsport event, like F1 or MotoGp, everyone have his roles.
Track marshalls are for safety.
Medic, paramedic and EMTs are for aiding the injuried.
Fire marshall are for preventing fire and to free stuck drivers inside their car.
@Lachlan Trescott Felipe's foot was on the throttle and the car was constantly hitting the redline, the noise must have been deafening

That is why teams get massive fines if tires come off the chassis after impact.
He was never quite the same after this. Such a shame. Not only a lovely guy, but a hell of a racer.
Felippe Massa - the most unlucky driver in F1 history. Chris Amon and Ronnie Peterson are behind him taking second and third spot :-(

How he recovered from this I will never know. True racer and will always be one of my favourites. From Australia xx
I was at the circuit when this happened. I cannot begin to describe the confusion among the crowd when it happened. You couldn't see the suspension spring hit is helmet on the big screens at the time as the screens were quite far away (on the other side of the track from where I was standing), it looked as if he inexplicably went straight on into the barrier. Everyone was really confused when he didn't get straight out of the car and they were all discussing what could've happened. Some thought it was a car failure, others thought he'd passed out. I thought it was a car failure and that he'd been knocked unconscious in the impact. It was only after returning to a relatives house later that afternoon and going online did I learn just how severe it was.
There was a solemn feeling among the crowd during the race build up the following day. Everyone was talking about it.
I have photos of when they brought his broken car back to the pits. It was so surreal to be there when this happened. This was such a scary incident and Massa was so fortunate to survive.
I liked the parties at night though. Budapest was very special back then

One of the greatest to never get a championship. Massa, Moss, Barrichello, Coulthard, Irvine, Fretzen, Webber
How my opinions changed in a over a year. Still, Massa, Moss, Irvine, Fretzen
Webber, Barrichelo, Coulthard a little bit more questionable. Definitely would include, Patrese, Reutemann, Peterson, Villneuve. And how has nobody mentioned Pironi, probably the unluckiest not to get his championship considering after his crash with 5 races to go, he never raced again and he still nearly beat the eventual Champion, Keke Rosberg.

Was there in hungary that day. All the party and excitement stopped the moment we saw the doctor approaching his car. From that moment on it was silent like the sun fell from the sky for an hour. After this slowly it went back to normal
Massa is the Best driver and person I had ever seen
Massa was a below average F1 racing driver . He won 11 races in total and they all came from when he started on the front row of the grid. He lacked the skill to overtake other drivers even when he was in a top team.
Ferrari picked him to be a number 2 driver and he was capable of that but not anything more.
He was never quite the same driver after that
FELIPE MASSA...
I never noticed you can actually HEAR the impact of the heave spring against Felipe’s helmet on the in-car camera feed before!
I was only 7 at the time of the crash, I remember watching it live when the BBC used to have full coverage of the weekend. I remember they suspended the broadcast shortly after they realised he wasn’t responding, which caught my attention because I had no clue why it just switched off; it reappeared just as they were loading his car onto the flatbed trailer and I was really confused as to what had happened. Wasn’t till several years later that I pieced it all together, shame he was never really the same after that.
Nope your wrong it was never suspended. They cut to Jake Humphrey and co talking. Which is what they usually did at the end of a session anyway. But yea they showed the replays later than the world feed.
In 2009 they showed the medical team doing their thing on the feed. They don't do that anymore today.
Depends on the Crash. On this one nobody understood why he isnt just going out of the car. They thought there is something with his feet. So they Filmed it hoping to see a thumb up. By Bianchi on the other side. Everybody who saw that on TV immiaditley thought: ,, Thats it. He is dead. " because you could See how heavy the impact was. Thats something you dont want parents to see.
Never forget celebration champion F1 felippe father after Interlagos race....wtf shame, great driver👍👍👍

Mama Mia. Took the words right out of my mouth. Even pre-HD you can tell is a metal spring. Ouch. The Halo would have deflected it.
That's debatable. Halo is designed for tyres and larger objects, this spring would probably got through.
@@repo4 also debatable, you have to think the halo designers considered this accident when designing it. Hence the halo, not the aeroscreen. Again, I don't know for sure, just debating.
The halo would have decreased probabilities, but the piece could have passed without touching the halo
if this exact accident happened with halo I think the spring would hit the Halo, judging by tracking the spring but that will not always be the case
The halo could have also deflected it down into the cockpit and caused him more severe bodily injury
