I love how softly he said the "damn that was a good start" lol. But to be fair to him he was way too far ahead to know how bad Grosjean's accident was.
Tbf to him it was a great start. If he had seen what happened I don't think he'd give a shit about his start but he didn't. From the way bono explained it, it sounded like Grosjeans engine just blew
I have never heard that... almost desperation in Kimi's voice when asking what happened, just goes to show that this was a horrible and very unexpected accident. Charles sounded very worried as well. Of course everyone are concerned, but the way Kimi and Charles reacted really made the whole thing that much more real for me
Big fireballs are not common (anymore) in F1 racing. So seeing one worries everyone, as it means the crash was extra nasty. And these guys are also very aware that these days it's not just fuel they have in their car, but also batteries, which complicate fires extensively.
It's been almost a year and still I'm shocked about Grosjean's crash itself and their reactions. Specially Leclerc who sounded traumatised after losing a friend few months ago and Kvyat who immediately thought he was at fault.
Leclerc sounds the most concerned. I can understand why. I don’t think the other drivers at the point knew how serious it was until they saw the footage but Leclerc saw it in his mirrors and I understand his fear because his late godfather Jules Bianci died in f1 a few years ago.
At least 2 veterans ( Vettel and Kimi, which is younger brother of another historical pilot that nearly lost his neck in a accident at Silverstone) plus a mid-veteran ( Lewis) knew EXACTLY what was going on and what could have gone even worse.
I really gotta give credit to Hamelin (Gasly’s race engineer). Although he severely understated the Grosjean crash he definitely did it for the benefit of Gasly, who I assume would lose his shit after hearing that another of his peers may be having a potentially fatal crash.
That has illustrated how great the relationships between the drivers are. Thankfully everyone was ok. Thanks to all marshals have cooperated in the best way. Moreover, Grosjean's job was incredible
I think we can all agree on that day Charles really needed one of the McLaren engineers, calm but worried, understanding that all the drivers saw was a fire and they had no information. Ferrari’s answer to everything is “just checking”. Lando’s engineer told him to stay calm and drive slowly and safely back to the pits (he had damage). That was the message Charles needed, or someone to talk him back to the pits. Thank God Seb knew what to do for him.
You can see how Leclerc was traumatized by Suzuka 2014 and Spa 2019... both of those situations where were people close to him died from a crash. You can... hear it in his voice and thats why he was so glad it was OK Edit: Jules was his godfather and Antoine was a good friend
Not just what and not just who's team lost a car, but exactly which car and driver. That's next level situational awareness over F1 drivers already being several levels above everyone else.
I like that Kvyat instantly changed to concern when the red flag message came through. Racing is racing, but they obviously care about the safety of other drivers.
The fact that nearly all of them asked if he's okay and if he's out showes that F1 is a big family and cares about the others even though they race against each other
Kvyat goes from complaining about Grosjean immediately to desperately asking about his wellbeing. Charles' radio is equally heartbreaking. Grosjean escaping with "minor injuries" from that horror crash is beyond a relief.
Man, you can hear the anguish and genuine concern in Charles' voice. Being personally impacted by tragedy the way he has and losing people close to him has to always come to mind when he witnesses something like that. Not to say the other drivers were less concerned but he desperately needed affirmation that Romain was okay.
Yeah its a really tough situation when stuff like that happens. You don't what to say anything. And the drivers know if they don't get out immediately something big happened. Glad he is okay.
