Sad about Karl Wallinger. I saw him at the Great American Hall in SF, probably last performance in SF. Beautiful, beautiful music maker. Glad that he had some more time after his health crisis years ago. Kinda like Steve Goodman. We have them as long as we do, then we have their recorded music and videos.

This could be about my missus. She had a terrible adolescence of sexual abuse, heroin addiction, exploitation, you name it. She was beautiful- I mean etherially, dizzyingly beautiful- charismatic, but above all, she had a prescience, an awareness, an intelligence that was properly unnerving. She had truly reached too high, too far and too soon, and tragically she was damaged beyond repair. I miss you every minute of every day, Emma. Xxxx
You are right, my friend, in general terms. In particular it is about understanding God. In it compares the author's understanding of Christianity to that of C.S. Lewis who is the "you" in the song. Be well.
Sometimes brilliance comes along, that is beyond reproach or definition, it can ignite emotions, memories etc .. Becoming timeless, we shouldnt over think , lets just enjoy, maybe even accept that sometimes, somethings are special & magical, quite simply .. "Because They Are" ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Yes. Me too he's 7 and he told me the other day that this is one of his favourite songs. I know that on some level he understands the meaning behind the lyrics, he's a very intelligent and sensitive boy and I'm so very proud of him. I can rest easy knowing I did something right.
Found this song soon after I got my CT scan reports, I was so afraid and even cried after a long long time in front of my mother, I was having the worst possible thoughts and was expecting the worst. I almost collapsed when I read the last line said that everything was clear, I’m never going to take anything for granted again. I see this as a second chance to live and I’m aware that not everyone gets it so I’m going to try my best to make everyone happy. Remember that life is far more important than what you are trying to make of it. Take care!

I lost my best friend this year to bipolar. Creativity came effortlessly to him and I always thought of him whenever I heard this song. I know the demons who taunted him in life think they won, but they failed because memories of him will forever bring me joy and strength. I miss you Frank - thanks for everything.
Ditto. All I can say is, thank God for a little-known, low-power radio station just outside of Annapolis, MD, called "WHFS". They played music like this all day long. I discovered them late one Sunday night on a cold winter's evening and was amazed. "HFS" was so low-powered when I discovered them that you could only pick them up late on Sunday night's for some reason. I would make it a point to stop whatever I was doing around 11PM on Sunday's and dial them in, listening intently, almost desperately, for the faint signal that, for me, represented salvation, hope and rescue. It was as if a window, long closed, shuttered and curtained, had been opened just a crack, to give me and only me a precious glimpse into a wonderously kaleidoscopic world of vibrant colors, feelings, emotions and, above all else, LOVE!!!! In time, HFS boosted up its power to where it could be heard like any other station in the DC area, and the secret was out. But still they played great music for many years until they eventually went commercial and the pop lineup took over. Until then, HFS was the secret handshake amongst kindred spirits. If you heard the station's call letters or one of the DJ's names mentioned in a conversation, you knew you were speaking with someone who was COOL!!!
From the first time I heard this too today I get goosebumps...Words just cannot describe how it feels to hear this song...So many memories it brings back to me..My Youth...
'round 4:30 or so,I think it is the keyboard player who enters with vocals and I could've sworn Bowie had just taken the mic. Unreal , how similar the voice ! What a beautiful and timeless masterpiece . Music like this , this wonderful , must surely be the best salve for any soul who asks the big questions .
I'm a 19 year old artist, studying animation and scriptwriting in college. When my dad was driving me to one of my classes once, he put this song playing and said "this one's for you!". I knew the song already, because he always played it to me as a kid, but I never understood the lyrics until that moment in the car. My eyes swelled with tears. This song, along with many others from this amazing group, have touched me and my childhood so much. This song specifically means the world to me

I listened to it back in the mid-'80s, it was such an incredibly awesome song, music that never gets old and brings wonderful memories, June 2023 and brings me back to the wonderful 80s
This is no one hit wonder of a band. They have been around for many years. Suggest you give this album “Fisherman's Blues” from 1988 a listen. I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, saw them in concert at the Orpheum in Boston in 1989. From the first song the audience were on their feet and dancing, an amazingly wonderful experience.

Another Awesome 80's alternative song that just makes you feel good, remembering how things were just good and people were happy in the 80's and the music was our strength, gets me through todays world 😊
Been dancing around to ship of fools on and off for the last couple of years. Love to read the comments, they led me here, to another great song I dance around the loungeroom to. I’m sorry we lost him. Thank you for your beautiful music you will be missed kind sir.
I knew I wasn’t the only one that liked that lyric sequence. This band is most awesome! My friend ,Johnny McCullum, introduced this band to me on one of my many trips to Scotland in the early 90’s. BTW, me and Johnny are still in touch!
Perhaps the most unique song of the 80s, still brilliant after all these decades. I wish I could hear it again for the very first time...fell in love with it instantly, some songs grow on you but this was instant affection
Great song, I remember stopping in my tracks, when I first heard it. How often does that happen nowadays? However, I would say, in terms of "uniqueness," Kate Bush's "Running up That Hill," gives it a run, IMO! 😉
The Killers and Frightened Rabbit did great covers of this song. If you haven’t checked the FR version out please do. It’s a quieter more melancholy take.
This song has a lot of personal meaning to me. I first listened to it during the summer of 1985, a very adventurous yet tumultuous time in my life. I'm grounded by the lyrics; they serve as a reminder of where I've come from after all these decades.
I lost my husband suddenly 10 months ago and I didn't think listening to this song that I knew before I knew him would break me, but actually listening to the lyrics, my heart is breaking again for the loss of him. He did know how to dream big and strive, despite his own battles with depression. I miss that so much. I saw the crescent; he saw the whole of the moon.

Wonderfull timeless music what a masterpiece! Rest in peace Karl!
Xxxx
Peace n Strength to You...💙
Sending a big hug😘😘😘
I'm crying for you.
What a beautiful tribute. Death of a loved one brought me here and saw this by coincidence...it has brought comfort. Thank you.
Bless you. Dx
One of the most beautiful songs ever written!
Totally agree
Il second that
Hmm I might agree as well
Yup, love the Waterboys! My other favourite song by them is A Bang On The Head
Agreed 100 %
This song is about to see the whole of everything. To be teal. To be happy, humble, crazy, loved, loyal. But most of all: being YOU
You are right, my friend, in general terms.
"Because They Are"
❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
This song reminds me of my beautiful son. He's 22 and amazing and he thanked me once for his taste in music. Im so proud of the soldier he has become.
This song also reminds me of your beautiful son
❤
Take care!
Take care
All the best

I first heard this in 1985 when I was 15. Now I'm old and to this day it is still my favourite song ever.
❤ this
Thanks for the music and the inspiration Waterboys.. it inspired me as a suicidal 17yr old to pick up the guitar and I've been so grateful and blessed since. The road is long, but the journey is worth it.
Thanks for the music x
Appreciated..

I have been a faithful fan of The Waterboys since I heard their voice and I noticed you are a regular visitor to their UA-cam Channel too, which is good. How long have you been a fan of The waterboys?

@@Jez-Hero24same here muk June 62 me but the latter part of the seventies and 80s oh jesus what a feckin blast I had the time of my fkng life. We used to drink in same bar as Martin degville and boy George before they became famous.
This song has always been like magic. Especially from 2:14 when this lovely female singer starts, the combination of those peaceful wordless (Taah, Taadadada...') notes with de lead vocals and lyrics reaching it's climax. Goosebumps every single time again. And Karl we will miss you!!
yeah, I never thought her singing added very much to this great song
It's okay, just doesn't add much
I totally agree. The singer's name is Max Edie
@@squirrelbutler2119 Always ok to agree to disagree, of course individual taste can vary, even within the same song. That what makes musis even the more interesting and fascinating.
One of my alltime favourite songs I will loooooove forever!! 80's rule 🏆👍❤❤❤

Why does a tear come to my eye when listening to this beautiful song
I think of it of when my dearly beloved ones have passed away. They had intuitive prospective on life which I could not see at the time.
Aye, me too. Anthem of our childhood.
Because it's epic Chris!
i know right?
This song always makes me cry
I absolutely love these lyrics, it's brilliantly written.
What a masterpiece.
Many thanks Karl. Your place in heaven will have a seat ready for you to view not just the whole of the moon but the universe . My sincerest condolences to Your family, past band mates and all of those thinking of your music today .
Songs of today cannot compare to such a classic,,,the tune,, rhythm,,it's spine chilling miss these days
This has to be one of the best pop records ever.

One of the greatest songs ever written and performed. Love it for 40 years.
I lost my best friend this year to bipolar. Creativity came effortlessly to him and I always thought of him whenever I heard this song. I know the demons who taunted him in life think they won, but they failed because memories of him will forever bring me joy and strength. I miss you Frank - thanks for everything.

Listening to this in 2024 with my son who's 4 dancing in the kitchen singing all the words fantastic song and my boy agrees 😊😁

70 here. Me too . Esp this song (I hope somebody plays it at my funeral).
75 HERE .
So glad I grew up through the 80's with songs like this.
What, like rap song after identical rap song isn’t good enough
Me too, we were so very lucky.xxx
Rest in peace Karl, we remember you 🖤
From the first time I heard this too today I get goosebumps...Words just cannot describe how it feels to hear this song...So many memories it brings back to me..My Youth...
2022 and for me this is one of the greatest songs I've heard in my life. ❤️
It really gets to the soul, different reason for different people. I didn't see the whole of the moon withy first love.
Love the album the 🌊 classic 👌🏻
As it is for me,from the time I heard it back then. It is like a soundtrack for ones life..
I heard this song for the first time today and I am crying tears over how beautiful it is.
The oldies as the best Tracy I'm still rocking to this music after 73 years😅👌
Weclcome. Now try Old England.
Look up this is the sea or any thing else they've done
I did too ♥
Oh, the joy of discovering something so beautiful for the first time...
Always thought this! Love this song.
I believe that is Karl Wallinger on the keyboards and backup vocals. He went on to form World Party, among other things.
This song specifically means the world to me
I showed my son this song I don't know why ,but I felt like it's meant for us!
One of those amazing tracks that just makes you feel super nostalgic

Thanks for the music. RIP Karl.
I listened to it back in the mid-'80s, it was such an incredibly awesome song, music that never gets old and brings wonderful memories, June 2023 and brings me back to the wonderful 80s
Was a brilliant song when it came out and still is to this day. Far surpasses anything anyone is doing in this day and age.
I had flashes ❤❤ you saw the hole of the moon . Amazing love this tune. Always xxxxforever
This is no one hit wonder of a band. They have been around for many years. Suggest you give this album “Fisherman's Blues” from 1988 a listen. I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, saw them in concert at the Orpheum in Boston in 1989. From the first song the audience were on their feet and dancing, an amazingly wonderful experience.
yes it's a great album , I have been a fan since the 80's .Great band .
Fisherman blues is a great song, makes you imagine the life of a man working hard to carve out a living in this unjust world.
Yes.. I'm 57.. just discovered them and almost all Iisten to for several months. Wish they would tour the USA. I would pay anything to see them..

You know the best bands dont have many hits just look at rem just have songs with volume heart ache sadness and emotional. Not songs to make cash from mugs
This was played at my Dads funeral. Broke our heart but gave us a memory that took us right back to childhood. Amazing!
its gone bittersweet with me too. stay strong angela. all the best.

I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
🎵🎶🎵🎶
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned, I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon, hey yeah!
Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
Too bad it doesn’t copy and paste. Thanks for all the words.
Brilliant
thank you president Camacho
🏆
In this version he sings “saddlebags” instead of scimitars. I wonder why?
One of the most beautiful, haunting songs of all time.
haunting!? Hmm 🤔
Yeah, I'd say so..
Another Awesome 80's alternative song that just makes you feel good, remembering how things were just good and people were happy in the 80's and the music was our strength, gets me through todays world 😊
Como se puede olvidar este pedazo de canción dios mío que vida
It is a privilege to hear this song. Such tremendous talent & skill.
It is joy, hope, redemption and self-reflection all in one... What a song.
I agree. The lyrics are incredibly.
This is one of the finest songs ever written.
You came like a comet
With the wind in your sails
Been dancing around to ship of fools on and off for the last couple of years. Love to read the comments, they led me here, to another great song I dance around the loungeroom to. I’m sorry we lost him. Thank you for your beautiful music you will be missed kind sir.
"Yes you climbed on the ladder with the wind in your sails, you came like a comet blazing your trail" love that line
Pure poetry I loved that line too.
Followed by the bang sound courtesy of the great Karl Wallinger 👏👏
Love that line too.
I'm thankful for The Killers for showing me this song and band when they covered this song! Absolutely amazing!
The Killers and Frightened Rabbit did great covers of this song. If you haven’t checked the FR version out please do. It’s a quieter more melancholy take.
Brandon has great taste in his covers. You can tell his influences by his covers.
This song has a lot of personal meaning to me. I first listened to it during the summer of 1985, a very adventurous yet tumultuous time in my life. I'm grounded by the lyrics; they serve as a reminder of where I've come from after all these decades.
Nearly 40 years after its creation, pure genius. Great every single time.
Seriously. Never gets old.
Yes kev Simone 🙂

I lost my husband suddenly 10 months ago and I didn't think listening to this song that I knew before I knew him would break me, but actually listening to the lyrics, my heart is breaking again for the loss of him. He did know how to dream big and strive, despite his own battles with depression. I miss that so much. I saw the crescent; he saw the whole of the moon.
First time listening to this song. UA-cam randomly recommended it. Ï am absolutely amazed. Can't stop hitting the replay button.
Backing vocals were by an uncredited Enya, they recording in the same studios at the same time
Im jealous of anyone that gets to hear The Waterboys for the first time.
Bienvenido a los 80's ❤
@@HopelessCatTrainer Nice! How popular was Enya back then? She must be just starting out in the industry, I guess, and was delighted to have a quick gig because The Waterboys happened to be in the same studio. 😊
Hard to conceive how anybody can make the lyrics of a song like this ... simply exceptional !
Breathtaking ❤❤❤❤❤
