The Waterboys just have a knack for making the weight of the day’s troubles float away … and before I know it, my foot is tapping and I’m singing along with a smile as my attitude has been adjusted in a healthy, positive way through the magic of music. 🙏 🎶 🫶🏻
Hundreds of us, young students, falling out of the pubs and all heading for a burger and chips at Supermacs in Eyre Square, Galway, Ireland. Mid-1980s. The Whole of the Moon blaring on a speaker system around the square. Never forget it. I think The Waterboys were recording in a Galway studio at the time. Absolutely the best time to be alive.
First heard this song on the Greenpeace contiplation back in the 80's while at High School. It's 2024 and I still listen to this song on a regular basis.... It will never grow old to me
This is my song when i hitchicked to Stonehenge for the solstice in 1991. Standing on the old A303, good E'S, great people, beautiful moon. I asked my friend if he would come, but he bailed, so he missed out on an epiphany.
For those who wake up, spend the day and go to sleep with music, it's incredible how there are still countless songs to discover that take us back to the 80s. Ok, I'm a bit strange but all of us who like this music are old dinosaurs who don't fit into today's standards. 🇧🇷
A classic. And brings back so many memories. The "1985" box set is fantastic. And the Video Version of The Whole Of The Moon is really great. Give that one a listen.
I Clicked On The Full Waterboys Album, Because I Just Love Their Music. * Whole Of The Moon * * Oh How Did You See The Whole Of The Moon *. * I 🤫 Listened To The Gentle Voice Hidden In Each Heart...# it is so easy yet so so hard.the human heart that is Acts 10:33 -35. Amen
Used this track as an entrance to my Civil Partnership ceremony (UK), also used it for entrance music to his funeral as I and five relatives carried his coffin into the chapel.
1985 I was a student, 2nd year of my studies. Whilst walking from the CBD to my home to Glebe across a crappy industrial landscape I was see the billboard. The Whole of the Moon.
For those who missed the words to the last lyric, which wasn't included, it goes like this . " How-the-hell-did-you-see-the-whole of the mooooooon!" Good innit? Share this with those who missed it. It is perfectly concluded with this last line.
The Waterboys - Whole of the Moon I pictured a rainbow You held it in your hands I had flashes But you saw the plan I wandered out in the world for years While you just stayed in your room I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon The whole of the moon Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon I was grounded While you filled the skies I was dumbfounded by truth You cut through lies I saw the rain dirty valley You saw Brigadoon I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon I spoke about wings You just flew I wondered, I guessed and I tried You just knew I sighed But you swooned, I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon The whole of the moon (The whole of the moond) with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon The whole of the moon, hey yeah! Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers Trumpets, towers and tenements Wide oceans full of tears Flags, rags ferryboats Scimitars and scarves Every precious dream and vision Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder With the wind in your sails You came like a comet Blazing your trail too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon
My son was nine and the first time I asked him if he had a request from dad’s oldies playlist this song was his immediate choice. I guess I did something right raising him. The other son, aged six, requested “Degenerate” by JAMC, which is another good choice, but maybe too soon.

The Waterboys - Whole of the Moon
I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned, I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
(The whole of the moond) with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon, hey yeah!
Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
