Thanks so much. The wife and I have been binge watching all of your videos. Its refreshing to not be sold on the sponsored content. We recently lost our beloved Dozer to lymphoma at the tender age of 7 and of course the kiddos went thru their grieving then said Dozer wanted us to not be alone. We welcomed a handlful of a 3 month old Bullboxer named Remi. Ollie is on the list of foods as we have learned so much from your videos already. Our vet mentioned Nature's Logic as a really great kibble. The wife begged me to comment and ask if you could do a video on nature's logic dog food, be it puppy or adult. Thanks for making this video. I was trying to decide if I should try Ollie for my two picky shih tzus. They don’t like to eat in the morning and I have to hand feed them to get them to eat at night.

I got my starter pack today for my English Bulldog pup and he licked the bowl shiny with only 1/4 lamb in the kibble.

@@YasukeNakamoto Initially we did only lamb. Now we do both lamb and turkey.
Ollie also has a pork based diet with olie. They do have rice in the recipe

Thank you for this video, I’ve been doing some research for some time. From the fresh food options Ollie and farmers are the two I’ve been looking at. This video definitely helped. What are your thoughts on raw food ?

Thank you for your response. It is hard and confusing to navigate through all of the info regarding raw vs dry kibble. Especially when you have veterinarians on both sides of the arguments. I linked 3 videos with well known veterinarian pro raw food diets. I also found two articles, other than the risk with manipulating raw meat, I was unable to find articles that clearly state kibble is superior to raw food. The health risk associated with raw food can be easily mitigated by following proper food handling techniques. I was not sure, If you have any links or trials that you can share where one particular diet is superior to the rest. All I could find was raw is non inferior to current recommended diets.
Currently I am feeding my 1+ y/o Pomeranian Ollie’s, my 3 month old Pomeranian is on carna4. My mother’s dog is on hill senior dog food. I did come across another dog food that seems promising (Sunday’s) but still need to do more research on it. I couldn’t find Sunday’s dog review in your video library, but it maybe be a food many of us would love to get your thoughts on. As always, thank you!

This includes a full text version of Small Animal Clinical Nutrition. Start at page 227, that has the section on raw and all the studies and citations you can review. Please refer to those links as there is not any 1 particular article that is better than another.
Hi Dr. Rea, love your videos. I noticed Ollie was at 1.7 calcium, is that too high for a 4-year-old lab? He is on PPP large breed sensitive skin but still has allergic reactions after he eats (itchy face and paws). I'm hoping a fresh diet will help him, thank you.
1.7 is above ideal but within AAFCO. I’d try adding water on top of your PPP if he only itches after he eats, that doesn’t sound like a typical food allergy presentation and nah be him trying to clean kibble debris from his face and feet
So are pulses/chickpeas okay in food if there are grains? I thought these were the ingredients of concern in grain free foods but am also seeing things like pea protein in science diet puppy that has grains as well
The theory is that the amount of pulses needed to make a grain free diet is the problem, not the fact that they are included. It’s the amount they are included in the grain free diet. At least that’s the current theory.
Can you do a Maev raw food review?
My dog has BVS, and fresh food (Farmer's Dog) has worked extremely well for managing his issue in the past. Unfortunately, it got to a point where I could no longer afford it and had to switch back to kibble. He's now on Science Diet (sensitive stomach), and he's back to having little to no appetite in the morning. At the advice of my vet, I feed him 3x a day with a late night snack to help keep something on his stomach, but it takes a lot of coaxing and a wet food mixed in to get him to eat in the morning. Good to know that Ollie might be a good option if I'm able to afford fresh again!
I’m obviously not acquainted with your pet specifically but maybe ask your vet about a work up for GI motility impairment/ addisons. That would be a possible differential for that symptom. Otherwise if you can manage with food…great!
@@AnimalDocRea Thank you! He just had blood/urine/fecal testing done for his annual exam and everything came back perfect. And he's had x-rays in the past to rule out other issues. Is there more specific testing for those conditions?
@starnaito I normally would do endoscopy for motility disorder, but that sounds like a solid start for a work up
You did not mention the cost per month to feed this dog.
Yeah, I forgot to record that because it was so much back and forth with the company. It’s the same as all these. $31 a week but they give you a discount at first
My dog struggles to eat just dry food and refuses it without wet. Is it bad if I give him Purina using Ollie as a topper?
If he likes canned there is nothing wrong with feeding a soft food, it’s more expensive but so is Ollie
You haven’t specifically done a video on them it seems, but have you ever looked at spot and tango’s fresh food? I mostly feed my dog science diet or purina but I like grabbing the fresh foods when they’re on sale for some variety. She likes Spot and Tango the most but it seems to have much more meat content than others so I’m wondering if it may be too high in protein and fat. That’s probably why she liked it so much 😂 Ollie was also a fave though so it’s good to know that one is a decent option!

Variety is not the best? For a dog? A scavenger? Disagree. Sure if you have a pet with issues, keep it simple and consistent but otherwise....
Although it is a romantic notion that a dog is still a scavenger and a “wolf” at heart, the scientific reality is the domestic dog is not even genetically related to a wolf and is adversely affected medically from frequent diet changes. In addition to the published literature, As a practitioner I have first hand experience to substantiate that statement. In layman’s terms, you don’t know your dog has an issue, until they have bloody diarrhea on a Sunday and your regular vet is closed.
@@AnimalDocRea Science is rarely romantic, and its principles endure over thousands of years. Providing your pet with a diverse diet, alternating between two or three different proteins (not simultaneously), can be beneficial. This approach is generally advantageous unless the dog has a medical issue or a sensitive stomach. I believe this perspective holds true, despite your opinion.
@darkangelo you are absolutely right that science is not romantic, but philophosphy is, and this is where we differ. You see, it’s not my opinion, it’s my advanced medical degree, clinical experience, and relevant coursework, and published recommendations that formulates my decision, but I appreciate your prospective as it helps me understand how others perceive things.
@@AnimalDocReaI'm sorry but you haven't been in Veterinary service for that long. And you cannot just wish away thousands of years of instinct. Introducing a variety of proteins in good for the microbiome of the animal. Different proteins have different nutrient profiles, which can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome. A healthy gut flora contributes to better digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall gut health. On that, I've seen your list of foods that achieved a score of 7-10. A suspect list of questionable nutritional value and highly over processed commercial brands.
I’ll take that as a compliment as I assume you are inferring my age based on my youthful appearance. I’ll actually be celebrating my 15 year anniversary as a practicing veterinarian this May, and I never tire of being told I look young. 🎊🎉🎊😁
