Thank you, everyone. I wrote this sketch for Mr Allen in 1973. I worried that people would guess the punchline. But this seems not to have been the case. Happily it was included in "Dave Allen: The Immaculate Selection" on BBC2, 4th Jan 2013.
David McGillivray genius sketch. Like you mention I didn't actually guess the ending but I think that's why I found it funny and related to it. I'm sure most of us have been waiting for something unaware others are. Then there's that moment of realisation/shock and a quick dash to be the first to get it.
Never thought of that, but you could be right! One thing I find interesting, living here in America (sorry, World, we're trying to get rid of him...), is that people don't share tables like that. There are SOME cafes and restaurants that do this but for the most part each "party" gets their own table (which is certainly a waste of space). I prefer your method, but is this common place or just for the sake of this sketch?
One of the funniest and best sketches I have ever seen. The clever thing about this sketch is its simplicity that can have someone on the edge of their seat wondering if someone else is going to spot something you know that you hope no one else does. AND THEN??? LOL.
I could watch this damn sketch a dozen times and it is as funny the twelfth time as the first. Plaudits to the writers, choreographers and participants, including Mr. Allen.
As someone that grew up watching Dave Allen on TV, I was prompted to watch this after hearing Nicky Campbell refer to it earlier this week on Radio 5 Live breakfast radio. I am glad I did as I did not recall it. Brilliant stuff!
yes I went through several Dave Allen compilations and thank you for putting this on-i have told people about this sketch over the years and got laughs and for them to watch it with me is a joy-agree that it is certainly one of the best sketches done by any comedian and is my personal favourite too!!!
I’ve just watched this sketch again today (23-9-22) and realised that it is a £10 note right enough!! 🥴Similar colour to the 10/- note but almost twice the size and 20 times it’s value!…. Back then in the mid 70’s, £10 note would buy you about 25 gallons of petrol ⛽️ which is about £200!!
That road sweeper still makes my heart jump you just don’t want him of all people to get it 😂 i saw this as a kid it still holds up well today remember £10 back then was like 20 quid today GREAT STUFF 👍🏻
Plot twist: Next morning, the cafe owner lady gets out of her red car, places a note on the ground and pins it under the tyre and tosses the keys to her brother with the same instructions as always: "5 minutes before closing time."
We got cable at our house 1981....I was 17 at the time and found him HBO (i think it was HBO)....now with UA-cam and I can watch all over again.........Same with Super Dave Osbourn
First time I started watching this sketch feom a friend I thought "what alot of rubbish, just 70s and 80s stuff". How wrong was I to judge so early, I was in stitches by the end. So simple yet so funny. Thank you for posting this 😂
I recall how I laughed the first time I saw this sketch in the mid 1980's. My favorite sketch is of the two Irish funeral processions racing to the cemetery. 2nd is Dave Allen as the Pope being carried on his throne up and down the stairs.
Thanks so much I too have been looking for this sketch for awhile makes me burst out laughing every time I have seen it, not a chuckle but a real satisfying belly laugh
When I think of Dave Allen sketches this one is the first I think of in the same way as The Two Ronnie's and The Fork Handles Sketch. What I remember most about this sketch when I first saw it YEARS ago was that somehow I didn't notice that the café was full untill the end. Plus except for the waitress taking the order, no dialogue so congratulations to the writer of this clean joke sketch.🤣🤣🤣
Not only as fresh as the day it was filmed, but a real slice of 1970s British car design/suburban architecture/video quality/grey winter weather! Glad I don't live there any more... filmed in Hounslow? Neasden?
Most of the note was free so if he'd ripped it he could have exchanged it at a bank for the value of the full note. The Bank of England will replace damaged notes if at least half the note is present.
@kikibooboos I was with friends at Xmas 2010 when I mentioned this sketch as my favourite, and then trawled the Internet to try and find it. Because I couldn't find it I promised myself to get it uploaded to youtube.
Filmed in Ruislip, Hillingdon in north west london. Heres what the location looks like today. www.google.com/maps/@51.58886,-0.4362426,3a,75y,98.28h,75.5t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9oDow24Kj81dl5QnVB57AQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Bloody good one!
Thanks!
Can I ask what made you have Dave as a City Gent? It was dying out in the 1970's?

Not my choice but the director's.

The logic is: It was the cafe that put the £10 there :-D
Another gag story revealing this would have been great...
....maybe the cafe owners car....

@@JustWasted3HoursHere It is common place and go to Japan.....they sit on top of each other, well not now.
Well that just ruined the ending...!
One of the best comedy sketches ever.
I remember laughing so hard to this when I first saw this. Best sketch ever!
I showed this to a couple co-workers today. They both totally lost it. They didn't see that coming! Absolutely brilliant!
..... it could have ended with the cafe owner saying "it only took one £10 note under my own car wheel to bring in all these customers !!!!!"
@@ajs41 But Andrew you're being boringly pedantic !!!
Don't give up the day job! :-)
One of my all-time favourite comedians come raconteur & story teller. His shows were "must see" tv
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought I'd seen all of his clips but I can happily say I haven't! Brilliant!
The music makes it all the funnier.
Awesome sketch. Btw, £10 in 1973 = £70 in 2023
The sketch is back on TV this autumn. Sue Perkins chose it as one of her favourites for a new series (My Favourite Sketch) on UKTV.

One of my favourite sketches of all time. Btw it’s a 10 shilling note which was worth about £10 back in the day!🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@graemegass9059 25 Imperial gallons? 100 Liters I think.
No, is £10, not 10 "bob" note
Comedy gold! Love this sketch. 👍

It'd be more like 155 quid....which is definitely worth sticking around for.

plot twist the note was intentionally kept by cafe owner to bring more customer.
You'd be hard pressed to find many people to compare to this guy.He was one of a kind and the world of entertainment is a lot poorer without him
Thanks so much I too have been looking for this sketch for awhile makes me burst out laughing every time I have seen it, not a chuckle but a real satisfying belly laugh
As I watch this it makes me smile but also saddens me knowing he's gone. I hope you're in a better place my friend, see ya in the next life.
I remember this sketch very well, but I only saw it once sometime in the early to mid '80s. Funny to see it again after all this time.
When I think of Dave Allen sketches this one is the first I think of in the same way as The Two Ronnie's and The Fork Handles Sketch. This is the best sketch ive seen its creative genius
Superbly Thought Out, A Masterpiece of situation Comedy! Well Done!😀
It's not Situation Comedy. That is when a comedy format is placed in a particular setting - like 'Fawlty Towers' in a hotel in Torquay, for example.
This had me laughing my pants off.
This was one of the funniest skits Dave Allen made for his show. 😂
Don’t forget all those Pope sketches. Hilarious and I’m a left-footer (Catholic).
Genius. Great sketch, beautifully executed.
£10.00 back then was quite a lot of money back then, I always remembered this sketch at the time, Brilliant!
£10 in 1976 would be £80 in 2021.
The Bank of England inflation calculator says £10 in 1976 (when the sketch first aired) would be worth around £64 today.
Just brilliant.
Was looking for this one everywhere! Thanks for the upload, totally agree btw!!!
The cafe owners probably planted it there. Great extra custom! 🤣🤣
Sadly I never met Dave Allen in my younger years. He was a true master of comedy and died far too early in life.❤
Terrific, Mr. McG! (Ed Grant pointed me thisaway.)
Brilliant! Thanks for the upload, it's a shame more of his sketches haven't been made available on DVD
As simple as it is, maybe one of the funniest sketches of all time
I remember those brown tenners, they were worth a fortune.
Worth about £65 in today's money.
LOL! It's such a simple gag but absolute genius nonetheless! :)
Thanks for the upload, been looking for this one for years,so funny
Love this sketch the best ever. RIP Dave Allen a true genius of comedy 😂😂👏🏽👏🏽👍🏾
Totally cracked me up 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He was an absolute comic genius, ridiculed everything in life, best comic stand up ever, nobody comes close to his dry wit humour
Not only as fresh as the day it was filmed, but a real slice of 1970s British car design/suburban architecture/video quality/grey winter weather! Glad I don't live there any more... filmed in Hounslow? Neasden?
+*balikpapan* Probably somewhere near the BBC Television Centre.
And cafes and greasy spoons before Starbucks
Ruislip area, just round the corner from where the green cross code advert was filmed with Alvin Stardust (Ruislip high street)
Its on the main road just outside of ruslip lido
You can watch this video with the sound muted and it's as good or better than anything done in the silent era
Classic Dave!
Thank you. So very funny.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 that's a classic sketch I guessed the punchline jc
Not sure this would be quite so hilarious without Dave Allen's comedy timing and acting. Every movement and facial expression from him is comedy gold.
This made me laugh so hard! thank you for the upload! :)
PURE GOLD
This was filmed at a time when £10 was a fair bit
It's the equivalent of about £80 today, so yes it was lot of money back then!

Ha! To be honest it took me a second before the punchline kicked in...
hilarious!!
Brilliant sketch because you have to wait for the punchline rather than get to it quickly
Most of the note was free so if he'd ripped it he could have exchanged it at a bank for the value of the full note. The Bank of England will replace damaged notes if at least half the note is present.
He could actually have removed most of that £10 note and taken it to a Bank! Still a very funny sketch though...
brilliant. music cool.
