In my country I am probably the only one to know about Dave Allen, and that is from youtube. He is a master storyteller, being it funny or macabre or both. This is a rare talent even among screenwriters and writers at large. Here in Brasil oral storytelling is somthing that in some regions is praised, a lot of small towns and villagea have their "official" storytellers. I am geateful that todays tech could introduce me to the work of Dave Allen
Listening to his storytelling, makes me think of how few of today's society know the art of telling a story. You get drawn in by their voice and their presence and you're taken on a journey to a destination, not of your choosing. Great theater. Great fun.
I remember watching this when it was first shown. Scared the bajesus out of me, Dave Allen really knows how to tell a good yarn, and not just jokes. RIP Dave.
Master Storyteller. He took the Paddy-whackery out of Irish Storytelling. Dignified, Charismatic and a proud Irish Man. R.I.P Dave. I owe you so much.....
@tinabaker4662 Bishop mcquaid. An utter cunt of a man who basically ran ireland over elected politicians. Fuck the Catholic Church. So glad it's almost dead in ireland. Cunt covered up abuse after abuse from priests.
I read that the great musicians, Beethoven et al, had the ability to confuse human emotions through minor and major keys-yet, I have never seen or heard a comedian or even narrator have that ability except this man-I know he works off the anti-climax partly for his own delight which is comic genius in itself ( See his smile when he knows he's took on, mugged and won a crowd at the end.) but when he's in the throes of seriousness, I tthink he's the best visual ghost story teller ever. Shakespearean actors or luvvies couldn't do better than this charismatic Irishman.
I remember watching this as a kid with my dad. We were both sat on the edge of the sofa, hanging on to his every word at the end. When he said 'Ill let you know' we both shouted 'WHAT?'
This is absolutely BRILLIANT. One of the greatest masters of comedy we ever had, but I could KILL that person or persons who coughed persistently throughout the entire sketch. They absolutely ruined the atmosphere of the story and should never have been allowed in the audience. Shame on you.
Michael Everest he was a genius the best comedian in the world. and still is.nobody has been close enough to make me laugh the way he did.magical humor. the best ever comedian in the world. xxx
I remember seeing this as a kid, about ten years old. He was scaring the crap out of me, and then the brilliant ending... Imagine 8 mins of a comedy show being dedicated to telling a story. Amazing.
Wow ... what a blast from the past this is ... it must be close to fifty years since I watched this on 'Dave Allen at Large' with Mam and Dad, the mesmerising delivery and how we all burst out laughing at the punchline was just ingrained so deep into my memory at the time it's like I'd heard it for the first time a week ago ... it's the same effect Billy Connolly's classic "I wanted somewhere to park my bike" on Parkinson had ... both just simple stories, brilliantly told ...
+TheSeanm102 This is basically Bluebeard so far... A German Fairytale! Had to do some German Projects when I was at uni, this was definitely the one that stuck out in my mind!
AAAHHH !!! R.I.P. DAVE ALLEN . BRILLANT& HILARIOUS INDEED !! I AM SURE HIS CREATOR SAID WHEN D.A. PASSED AWAY -- "I TOLD YOU SO THAT YOU WOULD BE THE FUNNIEST COMIC " FROM IRELAND. TO MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH !!!! FROM U.K. (2021).
Am I the only one who was disappointed with the punch line? For someone who was 1) a brilliant comedian and 2) such a master storyteller, I thought it was lame, expected better from him, such as "..... and that is how I lost my finger."
Miz Dr. Pfleiderer I disagree. The background noise adds to the tension in this case as it feels like you discovered this video and the imagination gets going without you. ;)

ABSOLUTELY.
Lol, I almost didn't want the story to end, he's such a good storyteller.
Loved watching this gentleman during my early years! He was a real entertainer to the end! Never
forgotten!!
A great storyteller, it reminds me of a tape I had as a child of Christopher Lee reading Edgar allen Poe - fantastic.
Dave Allen was a pure genius, but if he'd stayed in Ireland, he would have been bullied by Mc Quaid and his likes. Love this sketch, a masterpiece.
McQuaid and Dev, both of them a disgrace to the country
Who are they?
@@tinabaker4662 Himmler and Hitler to the Irish. And just as Hitler was Austrian and not German, deV was American and not Irish

For me this was his best ever.
Glues me to the screen every time I watch this clip.
It sends shivers down your spine just listening to this wonderful story teller.

My Dad and I just rolled around the floor, laughing like mad.

Ahhh yes, the old "yellow tennis ball" joke LOL!
Fantastic!!!

It is truly funny, and so well presented. It would be worthwhile to digitally master the video as the background noise is a bit obnoxious.

He had a fantastic storytelling voice, great sitting around a camp fire telling ghost stories.
Superb!
Bloody gold!!!!!!!!!
Just thinking of all the horror novels he could narrate.
Does anybody remember the TV show he did on famous scary places, like the grave of an innocent man where the grass wouldn't grow?
I NEED to hear that one
You were great Dave allen
