How blessed we were to have the comedy giants to watch back then, 2 Ronnies, Dave, Morcambe and Wise and the great stand ups, today's so called comedians, apart from a very select few, can't hold a candle to them.
Dear god I love this man, Dave Allen was my most favourite comedians when I was a child. He still can mesmerise me in these stories. I love the way he pulls you ever so slowly into his web of horror, only to throw in an hilarious ending and we’d roar with laughter. Dave Allen you will always be in my heart. I loved your stories, skits and witty humour. Hearing them again I still roar with laughter. Thank you for your talent and the fondest of memories. God bless you. I bet you’re making them laugh in heaven. They are lucky to have you.
Still loving it.
I can remember sitting engrossed by this wonderful man's tales as a child and I am still engrossed now. RIP Dave Allen, a true legend, the likes of which will never come again.
Sweet Jesus! I remember watching this way back in the 70's and laughing so hard. I am SOOOO thrilled that I can watch it again ... the risk of heart attack notwithstanding.
I used to rush home from church on a Sunday evening just to watch this amazing and oh so funny man. Newer so called comedians could learn so much from this man!
I was absolutely rivited right to the end...lol typical Dave Allen ..simply the best, I bet he frightened the living daylights out of his kids telling them bedtime stories..
Dave Allen was the absolute master story teller. He had so many people hanging on his every word. I couldn't stop listening or look away for even a second. Then with the ending I burst out laughing.
That's why I loved Dave Allen, so good at pulling you in and his stories could start off sinister but you knew he was just going to come up with a brilliant ending and I just couldn't stop laughing throughout!
Brilliant!!! Just brilliant. Not only was he very funny...he was also a great story teller. IMO, that joke would not have worked SO WELL if he did not tell the story SO WELL.

sunday night on the tv in wales could not take my eyes off his missing finger and the voice was just first class, (I was eight) scared the shit out of me sometimes but that's an education.
Thanks for posting this video man. Dave Allen should never be forgotten and always remembered. His class and style, timing and deliverance was absolutely flawless. A brilliant man.
Timing. Storytelling. And a devastating payoff. It's the Irish way of taking you by the nose and leading you to somewhere you never expected to be taken.
"The Bloody Chamber" - Angela Carter. This is also a very famous 'fable' that is tweaked to fit the chosen scenario. This all comes from the fable of 'Bluebeard', but is merely an extension of the biblical understanding of women as 'temptresses', who are responsible for ALL men philandering from their 'frigid' wives, and who, therefore, must be punished over-and-over-again for their.....being born? Anyway, kudos to Allen for telling the story, and leaving it grim, and open to interpretation. Wonderful story telling, from a wonderful talent.
The longer the story goes on, the more uneasy we (and the theatre audience) become. Dave is daring us to get caught up in the story, yet Dave is a comedian. Are we allowed to titter? Should we expect a punchline?
The woman! It's the curiosity of one's own fate. That's why it's the women through out history how were and still are fortune tellers, especially the Gypsies. I know because of my Gypsy ancestry. The witch of Endor in the book of Samuel shows God's displeasure, of trying to find out his programme into future time of cause and effect and the tale told by the late and great comedian is like a modern version of what happens with medaling curiosity. Curiosity killed the cat! Maybe that's why we call women Pussy Cats.

A Master story teller at his best missed dearly
What a story teller! Not only did I visualise the house, the corridor, the door. I was walking in the room with her.
John Sordo.
Was it you that made her scream and then closed the door?
I can remember sitting engrossed by this wonderful man's tales as a child and I am still engrossed now. RIP Dave Allen, a true legend, the likes of which will never come again.
A true master , i wish he was still with us.
Beautifully told. Not a pause, erm, um, like, you know anywhere. Not just a funny man but a world class raconteur
What an incredible storyteller.
Dave Allen was the best.

Don't you just love this man. His voice his very Richard Burton etc. He was the best comedian/racanteur ever.
I was absolutely rivited right to the end...lol typical Dave Allen ..simply the best, I bet he frightened the living daylights out of his kids telling them bedtime stories..

Master story teller. I absolutely love this man!
That was well played. A master showing us mere mortals his mastery.
Best story teller EVER, so different from others, I am going through all his stuff on here.

No one can beat Dave Allen.
I was hooked..
Sheer bloody genius! Been searching for this one for years....
Amazing series
God I miss this man. Dave blessed us all with his humor.
That is how you tell a tale!
Brilliant!!! Just brilliant. Not only was he very funny...he was also a great story teller. IMO, that joke would not have worked SO WELL if he did not tell the story SO WELL.
What a great master of words and comedy alike
Enchanting, enthralling story-teller.👍
At a meta level our curiosity in this story meant he had a killing punch line of endless no content, which is what curiosity is.
Well done Dave.
Totally mesmerising! How many story tellers can hold your attention like that for 8 minutes?

The great comedians are always great storytellers
A true classic, right up there with Morecambe and Wise
and The Two Ronnie's.
A tactician delivering masterclass in storytelling.
Absolute gold.
HILARIOUS FUNNY !!!! R.I.P. DAVE ALLEN . FROM (2021).

He was unique.. And no dislikes.
OMG just burnt my dinner listening to this .. but I still love you Dave !

rofl - he tells a captivating tale, for sure.
an excellent piece of story telling
He was just perfect at holding an audience in his hand ..... and closing it; tight.
He's scaring the hell out of me..eek!!😂😂
Perfect - thats the way to tell such stories
sunday night on the tv in wales could not take my eyes off his missing finger and the voice was just first class, (I was eight) scared the shit out of me sometimes but that's an education.
We used to do these types of tales on each other at school, obviously not as well told. They were called shaggy-dog stories.
Unique.
A genius
He was the comedians comedian
Great listening to the old comedians. No fowl language and knew how to make people laugh.
Foul language, you old rooster!

The last time I watched this .....say 45 years ago..... a close relative excused himself from the room. It just came back to me.
Just came back? Gee, where was that relative for 45 years? 😜

There are many versions of this 'joke' monologue, but he tells it well, it needs a deep, dark voice...
The Irish gift of gab.He sure had it
Genius.
Great way to fill eight and a half minutes, without actually telling a joke.
See McRocket comment below for the explanation
dave rip love you
The Bloody Chamber.
Could anyone do that now?
David Farmer No!!!
"The Bloody Chamber" - Angela Carter. This is also a very famous 'fable' that is tweaked to fit the chosen scenario.

best anti-joke ever!!
It makes me wonder, why was I listening for 8 minutes about a door. .
I see my doctor.
no you need to see dave allen
Eight minutes plus I'll never get back!
Is this where the Price Is Right, Door #1 came from?
David... you can go off people you know (?!!!).
That ending xD Curiosity level too high ._.

Splendid
🇮🇪😜
The consummate storyteller: We Irish know how to spin a good yarn 😉
This sounded like an SCP tale.
Why All The Coughing in the Room, Poor People!
Dont you wish he'd been your English teacher ?
A very cool voice; in the same league with Allan Rickman and Garrison Keillor.
Only just in second place . To see the best story told watch Muhammad Ali and Freddie starr on Parkinson .
It's as if, Dave is recounting a story, written by Edgar Allan...then...that's it, the end!
I thought this was going to be a mother in-law joke.
8:39 AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGHHH!!!!!
I ought to married an Irish man.
I am one,quarter Irish 😊😊😊
ok ok, but what was in the room???
