Season 2 ending: Heartbreaking sacrifice and imprisonment of Rick
Season 3 beginning: Rick quickly escapes from the prison and destroys two previously strongest organizations: the Galactic Federation and the Citadel of Ricks. Next episode is a crappy parody of Mad Max.
Season 5 ending: Mind-blowing revealing of evil Morty's plan. Ultimate destruction of the Citadel of Ricks and the central finite curve.
Season 6 beginning: Rick quickly kills Evil Morty and Rick who murdered his wife. Next episode is a parody of Suicide Squad.
UPD: Yes, now this joke is outdated.

Even the finale was kinda annoying, it was annoying how the writers keep telling us just how much they hate serialized drama. Yeah we get it. Rick, at this point, is just an extension of what the writer wants to tell its audience. What happened to normal dialogue? Ep 8 and 9 were amazing because the show decided to take itself seriously

It doesn’t make sense either since Rick from season 2 treated serialized drama very seriously. Especially in the finale where his best friend is killed and his sworn enemy, the galactic government, have found him. There’s so much at stake and Rick ultimately does the right thing by turning himself in to save his family. All this development gets squandered by the season 3 premiere, and the finale only worsened the blow by showing us the writers have gotten lazy when they insert meta commentary for Beth despite that being an exclusively Rick thing prior seasons.

Honestly, I’ve really come to hate how Rick & Morty will actively setup plot points and then get passive aggressive about fans wanting payoff for them. Around S3 & 4, there was definitely a lot of meta commentary about the show’s relationship with serialization, but it still felt like it was in good fun. But in S5 it feels lazy and mostly mean spirited.

    • @sdbzfan1
      @sdbzfan1 3 роки тому +18

I'd say less mean spirited and more don't get your hopes up, back when season 3 was airing Roland said the writers didn't want to give the fans Ricks back story because they didn't want to justify Ricks toxic behaivour, so what you see as mean spirited I see as "here now shut up" fans are twisting the knife begging them to show lore and the writers don't care but have to give us something, I'd rather they do stuff they care about than out of obligation, the stupid episodes are the writers just having fun with the fact they write a TV show

Huh, from what Ive read the creators HATE canon and just wanted the episodes to be random, the bits that looked like lore at the beginning was never meant to be lore at all, but then the fandom wanted to know more about it, and the show felt like it had to make those non canon lore "canon" to appease the fans, but they hate the canon hence why they were shitting on the fandom in the s5 finale with the quick flashback and Rick's comment afterwards

It's kind of a weird situation honestly, if they hadn't been given 70 episodes and they were on the hook for 1 to 2 seasons at a time (IE cancelled at any time kinda deal) they would have likely hit the space Beth bit harder and faster (like a season 4 opener) they would have fewer episodes with characters acting out of character to get the plots rolling, bird person would have likely been the season 4 finale. This would also help them set up a pattern, where the finales and openers were "lore" driven, while the middle episodes could be their self contained adventures with minimal canon to get in the way. Season 5 would have easily opened with the Evil Morty "conclusion" which could have then given us a season of Rick and Morty (with two beths) going on space adventures without the portal gun, a season of non-multiverse episodes, we then close off season 5 with what we got for a premier of season 6.
That being said that's a hypothetical, with them having potentially only 10 episodes at a time to tell a complete story they would be incentivized to tell more of the canon faster, but also be afraid of releasing these filler episodes. But if we see what happened to infinity train, we kind of realize that without the 70 episode deal Rick and Morty might be gone, deleted from UA-cam and erased from all streaming services. This 70 episode run might be enough to keep the show alive through WB's animation purge, though the fact that they feel the need to shitpost so much of this filler might have already screwed them. They might have to pull some serious diamonds out of their asses for the last half of the run because they might have already had the executives make the decision on continuing to make future seasons. The show might be done when it hits 100 episodes because they might not get renewed, simply because 4 and 5 were pretty downhill, and these decisions can happen years before we feel the effect.

Allow me to defend episode 3 real quick.
It works so well not because Morty is letting go of Planitina but because he is moving on from that childish, obsessive part of himself
The fact that he is being over violent “in the name of love” again works in my opinion for this episode because you are starting to see his destructive pattern that he himself also sees by the end when watching planetina kill tons of people-he realizes that he is usually the one doing that kind of thing in his “relationships” and needs to let go of that
I see this episode as character development not only in the sense of letting go of someone he genuinely loves, not his typical crush, but also letting go(or at least trying to begin to let go) of a really toxic part of himself.

To be honest, the only episodes I liked from this season were the first two. Simple but clever self contained concepts that build on themselves throughout the episode and lead to good jokes. I think the reason the last few episodes fell flat to me, even while I was watching them is the show's weird relationship with continuity. Why should I care that " Rick finally has a backstory" or "Rick and Morty are breaking up," or "Evil Morty is escaping to an outer dimension" when the show constantly fails to pay off plot threads? At this point, there have been so many story developments that were treated as important only to be either been sloppily rolled back or outright ignored (Rick turning himself in, the federation taking over earth, Rick's season 3 backstory, Beth and Jerry's divorce, Rick losing his status as patriarch TWICE at the ends of seasons 3 and 4, The federation just existing in season 4 after they supposedly got destroyed in season 3, Space Beth joining the family) that when something important does happen, the writers have trained me not to care. Why should I invest myself in learning Rick's backstory when the show previously told me a similar backstory, only to pull the rug out from under me and tell me it wasn't real? Why should I believe that Rick and Morty are really breaking up when the writers have shown me that they have no problem immediately bringing them back together if they feel like it? (Spoiler: They get back together at the very beginning of the next episode.) Why should I care about a confrontation with evil Morty when the writers mocked that idea earlier? Why should I care about characters getting any development at all when there's a good chance they'll be acting completely differently in the next episode? I'm fine with episodic stories. My favorite episode of the whole show is Rixty Minutes, which is just an interesting concept with a bunch of hilarious jokes and almost no connection to any ongoing storylines. I'm fine with Rick and Morty being episodic. I'm fine with it having continuity. I'm definitely fine with a mix of both, which is what the show employed during its great first 2 seasons. But instead of having a balance of both concepts, its trying to be all of both, which makes the show very messy and makes both kinds of stories worse. I just hope this show can start improving, because it used to be one of my favorites, but ever since the begining of season 3, it feels like its slowly been falling apart.

I think people always forget that the whole premise of the show was that the multiple realities allowed them to explore different stories without being tied down to a canon or worrying about consequences. They made that clear in interviews from the very beginning that they wanted to steer clear of canon and be as episodic as possible so they’re free to experiment.
It’s the fans that got hooked on the underlying details and then pushed for stronger canon and world building. Which I guess overtime it made the writers self loathing. They had a vision for what they wanted to do and then started getting pressured to abandon that vision and give the fans what they want. You can hear the resentment getting louder and angrier as the show progresses.
I’m guilty of it too. I sometimes thought to myself, I hope this become something later. But I guess that’s a the reality of tv shows. At some people people want more world building and not just one-off plots. It’s a tough one. As a creative, I can sympathize with them. On the other hand I also know how frustrating it is to get invested in the lore of something just to find out there isn’t any more to it.

When you get over the fact of how much this guy loves the sound of his own voice, his "criticism" boils down to "I don't like it because I don't like it" circular reasoning.
They keep saying things like "It''s the same just worse", without ever detailing why it is objectively worse - becuase in the end, it's just their opinion.
And The thing about "opinion" based criticism. All you need say to counter is "I disagree", and it's just as valid, becuase just an opinion.
You could do the same whiney opinion based criticism for every season. But you won't. becuase you like those seasons - "You like it because you like it".

The finale and the “meta-ness” is a weird discussion to have, cause I’m kinda with the writers on it, but I totally get the complaint people have with it.
I was of the opinion that Rick and Morty is best as just fun little romps in wacky scenarios (classic Rick and Morty adventure). I thought the evil Morty reveal was cool and thought it’d be neat to see. Then thousands of obsessive “theory” videos come out, the Szechuan sauce debacle happens, fans go crazy, and that side of Rick and Morty feels… cringe I guess? So when the creators basically spell out the meta in the finale, make fun of the fans, I kinda get it, cause it’s something I want to say, which is: “it’s just a show”. If this pisses you off, then go cry about it, you’re obsessing over a cartoon.
I’ve never really understood the whole argument of “they created these plots and storylines, and then get mad at us for wanting to see them conclude”. I can’t speak on their behalf, but I can imagine writing a storyline, a plot, a twist, a show that you think will be neat and set up a cool story, that then gets taken by fans and is twisted to an obsession that leads to said fans frothing over every tiny little hint of new plot you add, can sour you on your own story. I imagine that’s what happened, and I think they’re totally justified in being upset or soured over what they’ve written through the passage of time and audience “engagement”. Directly calling it out to interrupt the story during the finale in the middle of the show? Well that’s a different discussion.
I get the other side as well. Looking at it from just a casual perspective, you can’t deny the mega talk had a tendency to lessened the impact of the episode. Rick constantly saying “ok I’m going to go have the Morty reveal he is evil” “ok that was my back story now we don’t have to talk about it” even if what he’s saying is true (which is fans, stop obsessing over this to an unhealthy degree), when he says it at what could be a serious moment, from an object standpoint of watching the show without the fandom or outside world influencing the media, it’s a tension breaker. They have the write to be upset with some stuff, should they jeopardize story and the show’s plot points to do so? Well, I think that makes the stand alone product a bit worse.
I still liked the finale in general, the music as “evil” Morty leaves the curve was great. It felt like “our” Rick was not even considered a main giant threat in the eyes of this Morty, intentional or not. It’s a season that left me very mixed. Where I enjoyed it first time through, and look back on it relatively positively, but can see some of the flaws people bring up.
TL;DR: For me the season was a mixed bag I guess I overall liked. Sometimes I liked the meta-breaks (that people complain about) calling out entitled and crazy fans, sometimes I think it comes at too heavy a cost of the episode’s story. The writers have every right to be annoyed at the fan base and what it has become. Should they put their feelings directly in the show to call out their audience? Dunno; to some, it is a funny joke to do so. To some, it breaks tension in important scenes.

I completely agree. I think the reason why they keep saying this super meta stuff about the plot is because they feel the need to spell it out. I understand that people want to make deep dives into the show's lore and stuff, but the writers are literally telling people over and over again that this is not necessary the show to do that with. or fans can do it but don't expect to be rewarded with it in the actual show. That's honestly one of the reasons why I actually kinda like the incest baby episode. it is literally the most bonkers thing I have ever whitnessed in my entire life and it is so fucking dumb, but every time I think of it I laugh because I keep thinking, damn they actually did that lol. I had a friend that told me when we started med school that she sees a lot of Beth in herself 3 years ago. I saw the first four seasons, and because she had said that about herself, it totally ruined the entire show for me because Beth's existence is just sad and is exactly why she is an intergalactic badass, which is what she actually wanted, but she is chained down into a boring life and it is quite obvious that she would have chosen a different path. TL:DR, the show was ruined for me before I even watched it and I didn't respect a show that kept introducing plot points only to not do anything about them for more than a season and I stopped caring after S4.

this was a very well made video and you made a lot of good points!! I wanted to offer my counter that season 5 was my favorite so far, i think because Rick and Morty is a show that uses a nihilistic theme and setting to deliver very anti-nihilistic and complicated emotional "lessons", and I think I liked this season so much MORE because they're throwing continuity in the trash, because it highlights the emotional aspects like Rick and Morty's bond, Jerry and Beth's constant decisions to stay together despite knowing of all the infinite universes and the relative mundane-ness of their lives. Each episode felt more like a different artistic approach, paying homage to a different style of show or movie or other story-telling device, it feels now like it's a platform for a lot of experimental creative expression but also for different creatives to express real human emotions in a way that's funny and digestible. Loved the video man.

I feel like it depends on how you view Rick and Morty as a show. I kinda see it like Adventure Time, where are two main protagonists go on random adventures with a main plot kinda in the background.

Season 5 is the rebound season.
After we broke up with previous relationships and go and explore random one offs.
We're constantly chasing that high of our first love. Season 5 is that great.
Not many would understand it until they experience 1 night stands and short relationships after a big one.

RnM is one of my favorite shows of all time, I, too, would consider myself a super fan... I was so excited for season 5, and I watched every ep when it aired, only to be disappointed almost every time with what we ended up getting. Personally, the two finale episodes and episode 3 were my favorite. But, like, aside from that..? The season was incredibly lackluster, at times I felt worse after watching than I did prior.
That being said, I have hope for the future of the show. The writers can finally stop fourth wall bitching about plot-lines they introduced that the fans adored and simply wanted to see continue. I really hope they do something great with that newfound freedom, even and especially if it's more experimental.

I just wish they would stop being meta. The few times Rick would do it like at the end of an episode were fine but now every episode he has to complain about doing something with the story. I'm fine with the episodic and serialized episodes but it feels like the writers want me to feel bad for enjoying a story.

You’re going way too deep. Rick and Morty isn’t meant to be all awe-inspiring. It’s meant to have good concepts while still letting the creator play about and keep it lighthearted with his creations.. -_- Your criticism is only about it not being „black-mirror“ enough for you lol

    • @stingerjohnny9951

Then why do they keep teasing actual setups and payoffs? Why does the show act SO arrogant about it’s supposed cleverness?
You can talk about how it was a simple show, but it stopped being that way BECAUSE OF THE SHOW CREATORS.

I get what u mean man. I loved all the seasons. But 1-3 were the best. I think the writers want to tell a story but also want to continue doing wacky crazy adventures. I think both are good amd if they can find a healthy balance im all for it. Cant wait to see more of evil morty as well as all the weird adventures. Good content bro

It's nice that you're still responding to comments even now! I didn't want to wait till 4am to watch the new opener in the UK so I decided to wait till today. It seems like the Clone Beth stuff might be addressed and they even retroactively adjust some of the issues S3-5 had with the way they treated the Smith Family. Clone Beth addressing her distancing in the episode sorta fixes the 'where did she go' annoyance of S5. Jerry saying the divorce actually aided their growth fixes 'the divorce subplot in S3 went nowhere' annoyance. Addressing the continuity and resetting in a new universe for all members of the family and dealing with their origins really allows for the continuity bust to be patched together and reset. Additionally, this is sort of a theory more than something that's probably going to happen, but in the new opener they almost address the weirdness of the 4th wall breaks and lack of aging or time progression. Also, one of the new episodes is called 'Full Meta Jackrick'. Perhaps they are going to deal with the meta aspect in an interesting revelation? This is sort of out there and not based in reality but it would be really cool to see this addressed within the canon of the show.

This video was phenomenal. I 100% stand by everything you said, however I'd also love to note that the new season is looking promising (as far as we can tell from the trailers and shit) and I wouldn't really give up on the show just yet.
A few key things that I'd like to mention from your video are:
    1. The amount of "canon" based comedy, I knew they increased the amount of jokes but never knew exactly how much and how exponentionally.
    2. Space Beth being absent the whole season except that one cameo was sucked ass, would've loved to see that dynamic evolve,
    3. The Planetina episode and the Jessica episode were incredibly similar, however I'd say the main plot of both of them tried to mainly focus on different aspects of Morty in persuit of his own personal growth,
Thank you for sharing your POV of the season, looking forward to more R&M content my guy!

one thing - the writers didnt 'predict' the backlash to the sperm ep and then have the line rick says about 'never living this down' written 3 eps later but before any of it aired...obv rick's just referring to his character never living down what happened

Yup. This video nailed it. Well done. Totally agree 100%. Hell I haven't even seen all of season 5 yet and I got the vibes from the writers about this sort of thing. I mean don't get me wrong I love a bit of self degradation and a comedy is a great place for shitting on one's own canon but it does sort of diminish the impact if you do it too much. It's like the show's creators are bored/annoyed that they have to finally answer those big questions. Oh well.
Now we can all sit around with baited breath waiting for them to screw up Season 6 SPN style by sidelining the whole flipping of the show on it's head with the jaw dropping finale that LITERALLY changed everything for some more crapping all over it or ignoring it for a filler episode about something even more Rick and Morty-ish than a giant incest baby. Honestly I don't think they'll ever top that, it's pretty much peak "Da fuq?!" But who knows. Maybe they'll do an episode about people who like to cut open squids, shit in them and then have sex with them or something, hell I don't know, I just made that up on the spot for the sake of proving a point, that sort of rabbit hole is a K-hole. Rick and Morty do the debasing and they do it well but honestly I hope they don't keep trying to one up that sort of shit on a regular basis.

It's technically already happened with the Cronenberg universe. Rick screwed up the Earth, half-assed trying to fix it, then said "screw it", and took a portal along with Morty to a virtually identical universe where the resident Rick and Morty had died and just took their place.
The way I tend to watch the show is like classic Doctor Who, every episode is more or less self-contained, and you can either roll with the insanity and have a few chuckles and "aha" moments, or you can drive yourself nuts trying to iron out all the negative space wedgies and continuity twisting.
It's basically as Rick himself has pointed out, there are literally infinite other universes, that a good many of them are virtually indistinguishable from the one we're in right now thanks to probability coupled with the infinite part, which means in all likelihood, the exact same thing is going on over there, will go on over there, or has gone on over there, with either no change, a little change, or a hella lotta change. Ultimately means zilch in the grand scheme of things, but yes, Summer cutting a fart is still subjectively funny to him.
It's even up for grabs as to whether "our" Rick and Morty that we've been following are the original ones that kicked the whole shebang off.
As I said, you can either drive yourself nuts trying to figure it all out, or you can sit back and enjoy the ride for what it is. I will agree that the writers can stop lampooning their own show to death, but maybe they're making a point in a roundabout way.
For the longest time, R&M avoided time travel like the plague, only for Rick to lampshade that an infinite multiverse is basically as good as a time machine in all practical terms. When you literally can have anything and everything thanks to the portal gun, how are you gonna wring something good out of that without it devolving into the ridiculous all the time?
