from what I've heard that Dan knows about the drop in quality. He showed some stuff from the first season at an animation festival in Norway, turned to the audience and said something akin to "now that I look at it again, Rick and Morty used to be a lot funnier"
Granted, I'm hearing this out-of-context from you, but it sounds more like an attempt at "saying what we're all thinking" to be humorous than him actually having a realization
I actualy hate Space Beth, a lot. she incarnates everything I hate about Beth, her annoying sarcasm, her narcisism, everything. It makes sense, since she is the original B-Beth herself. I dunno, the idea of a terrible mother abandoning her family only to return home and mess their family dinamics even more is really... appalling to me... She knew what she was doing when she did those things with Beth, she gleefuly showed it at Jerry's face, in front of their children.
@@joelrobinson5457 And her father is nowhere near bad as she was like he show genuinely care with his grandson, help his granddaugther and even more or less save his son in law
If I had a nickel for every time someone named Dan inserted their fetishes into their shows, I'd have 2 nickels - which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
The overuse of incest jokes and incest-related plotlines was the final nail in the coffin for me. It started off as a couple one-off incest jokes, it just got worse and worse over time
Having the entire family just so casually mock Jerry over something that clearly disturbs him, when the first episode of this season seemed to imply that they were all going to try to get along more, and then to have that f*cked up thing happen to him anyways, is really just proof that this show shouldn’t have just been blindly given 100 episodes.
It doesn't actually happen, it ALMOST does but anyway, this show makes money, that's the only reason why they ordered all those episodes, and to be fair, Seasons 1-3 are pretty good, and that's when the contract was made, you have a show with great humor (at the time), making tons of money, getting sometimes over 2 million viewers in a single episode (at the time), [adult swim] had NEVER faced that much success before, so they took a gamble and, it's paying off, even if the overall quality of the show has derailed so much.
You're confused, they are fucked up people so something like this shouldn't be surprising to you. Like really look at the smite family for real and all the things they've done why would this surprise you?
@@ParanoidThalyyMVS Yeah, that's something that's unfortunately common when a lot of art/media gets popular or "successful" - more amounts of it is made until it's run into the ground (arguably because of unregulated capitalism being unregulated capitalism). In some cases, it works (like how I've heard the latter arcs of One-Piece are considered the best), but sometimes the best thing we can do with a good piece of art/media is knowing when to finish/end it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Krystalmyth No, they added the new writers for season 3. If you look at all the episodes writers, all the bad episodes of season 3 were made by the new writers, and all the good episodes were made by the old writers. By the time season 4 came around, there were no original writers. Ryan Ridley was really the all-star of the show early on.
So Beth is now, not only in love with herself, but is actually dating herself. I didn't think there could be a bigger narcissist than what she was before, but she managed to outdo herself.
@@RemixerUltimate It doesn't matter if the way a character is going is negative or positive, if there's new developments, then it's technically character development. Some characters inherently are meant to develop negatively, like Griffith from Berserk. His descent into madness is development for his character, but I think anyone would argue that where he's gone and going in the future is probably nowhere good.
It's not just the incest jokes. The show's had a long running problem where it consists of dialogue sounding pompous and edgy whilst random bullshit happens on screen.
You’re onto something here. The best of the series was smart and satirical while still enjoying dumb humor, but without the actual intelligence it’s just dumb humor in a cocky ‘I’m smarter than you’ wrapping, made by people who lack the self awareness to realize their writing sucks.
the show takes itself too seriously. it used to be roiland fuckin fun time, now it's pretentious dan harmon big think time. not a terrible show but far from the just plain ol' good times and stupid laughs it used to bring. it was a comedy sci-fi, now it's a wannabe sci-fi comedy.
Sounds to me like it falls in the same trap that all other "adult comedies" fall into of relying heavily on edgy shock humor to be classified as "adult" and grab your attention. And people pompously claimed this show is only for intelligent people, LMAO; you'd have to be VERY insecure to genuinely think that.
For the fortune cookie episode I feel like itd work just as easily if it said that Jerry would cheat on beth with a Super Hot Model or something, something so impossible and absurd that everyone else in the family would still feel odd about it since its a hot women and its him cheating, but still something Jerry himself would take serious enough for him to stress over.
@@david8393 I mean Jerry has said in the past that he feels happy that he got that divorce and that there relationship is special to him. So I feel like he would stress over it because he doesn't want to ruin his marriage again. Plus I feel like the kids would find it funny that Jerry ever could sleep with a super model, though I guess they could poke fun at the alien Jerry slept with after the divorce
I can't believe I'm saying this, but even Paradise PD did a more dignified version of that plot. In that show it told Steve he was going to spank the monkey in the zoo, which is certainly better than the fortune we got in R&M.
That's not funny or interesting in the slightest. The thought of you having to fuck your mom is likely a lot more terrifying than the thought of you cheating, no? I will say though the incest baby and Beth shit was very unfunny imo
I do kinda get annoyed about that with him. It feels like they want to make Rick the ultimate character, and honestly... I rather see him lose, not die, just lose in a fight to show he can’t always win nor is he unstoppable.
I don’t know if this is strange or not, but often times I can never get into adult shows. I can see myself watching something like Primal or shows that don’t have an overuse of the same old “swearing is funny” shtick, but most adult shows never appeal to me because I just feel like I get more enjoyment watching shit like The Powerpuff girls or early SpongeBob. I think I enjoy more subtle adult jokes in shows rather than full on adult shows lmao
I wouldn't put it past him to make Morty his own ancestor just for the sake of his incest fetish, only for him to disguise it by saying it's a Futurama reference
"Roswell That Ends Well" is one of Futurama's greatest episodes and it's basically one long build-up to an incest joke, a joke that also gets brought back as a plot point in a later episode. It's not impossible to make something like this work, Rick and Morty just...can't do it.
The thing about the Smiths not feeling like a real family is also especially true, I think the writers have gotten too comfortable with treating these characters as just 5 people who live with each other Season 6 is pretty great so far, but it was really odd to me how neither Jerry or Beth reacted at the sight of their children's corpses, while in the same episode we saw Morty get hella emotional over his original Jerry and family It's not like they've gone through the same shit Rick and Morty have to be cool with this kinda thing, we saw how it fucked Morty up when he buried himself for the first time, but now they all just get over it in 5 seconds I don't even want them to make a whole thing about it, but adding small details to show their bonds would go a long way Rick himself has actually become the most realastic family member, funnily enough, actually feeling like Morty and Summer's grandpa
Season 6 has the worst episode they’ve ever made with Beth incesting herself. The logic on the show has disappeared. She’s like “it’s like doing yourself” except twins are basically the same person and they don’t bang cause it’s incest. Jerry gets judged all the time but Beth is a narcissist beyond belief and it’s never really called out because she’s a woman. Sure there are still funny jokes and moments but the core of the show has fallen away from being cool. The point they messed up at was cloning Beth and him switching them to forget. He should’ve made 2 clones and the person at the end instead of bird man should’ve been the real Beth he decided to protect from the world and sent 2 clones to live out her desires for her and then eventually they’d be killed off and the real Beth would absorb both clone memories and that would been a funny episode with her trying to piece together which memory goes where but no we get a lazy Mary Sue story that lingers beyond it’s welcome with an incest climax. Solar opposites is now a better show
Holy shit I didn't even think about jerry and Beth looking at the corpses of their own children from a different universe. And the show never even addresses it as to how fucked up it is!
the most difficult thing about being a writer is that personal fetishes enter the writing and sabotages the entire story. it is a major struggle. don't know any good solution other than self censorship or coping mechanism
@@AdrianShephard-w3z not the most difficult thing to be precise. The most difficult thing about being a writer is trying to speak truth to power or sell out
Dude, one can find an outlet for weird ass fetishes and still be a half decent writer, just don't expect to being mainstream popular. That's the thing, certain topics are taboo for a reason, most people certainly DO NOT wanna watch incest shit on prime time on HBO, read your damn audience.
I completely agree. Once season 4s dragon episode hit, I was really confused. The creators had spoken AGAINST the incest, saying it's cringe and whatnot. However, starting season 4 we were getting episodes chocked full of incest jokes. I remember telling my cousin I hope they no longer feed into these jokes, that they're creating a bigger subsection of people who ship Rick/Morty/Family. It's gross. Season 5, I hated. So much of that season was off-putting to me. ESPECIALLY THE BABY. Now, season 6- I can't ignore that it feels like a fetish for the creator since its ever-present. It's so difficult to watch now
I guess we can blame glasses nerdy morty for asking for all that stuff to be mainstream in the series universe for this. (Joking) But in all seriousness it’s just getting too sleazy and just not good fun kind of uncomfortable like you know watching a gory horror movie. You are supposed to be uncomfortable but in good way but this yea this is getting too much that people wondering if they will keep at it again because it just disturbing and not good Hard to talk or put in words how appalled i am
I dunno if I'd say they were against it, I remember one of them said something about wanting to explore romantic relationships between Rick and Morty- which happened with the face hugger episode. And- the really really weird implication of Miami Morty. I was not at all surprised this stuff happened, more surprises by the frequency. I found it. It's a tweet from Justin Roland that says "In many realities Rick and Morty ARE in a passionate healthy romantic relationship. Maybe we'll do an episode about it" That was his response to a fan who was concerned about the shipping.
@@squakysquook Dan has sexually harassed a woman before, and he's a total creep dont get me wrong, but he's not got a history of making incest cartoons or sexualising minors. He's certainly not even remotely the same level of creep as justin roiland
Dan had issues, but he made up for it. Not in terms of writing, but in terms of resolving issues with those involved. What Justin allegedly did is unforgivable if true.
I'd argue that the uses of it in Season 6 are more focused on the uncomfortable nature of it. The Incest Baby stuff and season 5 in general felt like it didn't see the over-the-top and shocking stuff as... that shocking, which just felt out of touch. In the new season, I loved how uncomfortable they presented these topics, actually causing me to recoil and cringe where I 'thought' they were attempting me to. For example, the weight of Beth and Space Beth's relationship was punctuated by the slow reveal of everyone finding out, and the final shot of Morty, Summer and Rick breaking down mentally while the others had sex... tldr, it is pretty weird but at least it's being written into the dark comedy better, leaving the season as a surprisingly decent improvement over the last.
I feel like this season is mainly about the family. Most episodes don't even put rick in the forefront, it's either a full family or one of the other family member's problems being helped by Rick. This season seems like a way to show us Rick has decided to finally show his family he cares for them, giving advice or saying things he wouldn't say in previous seasons. Despite the incest stuff with Jerry in the latest episode, I actually really loved the dynamic between Rick and Jerry, specifically "you can choose what to take seriously". The Beth episode like you said was made to be uncomfortable, and the family's reaction to it honestly made the episode really funny to me.
As a fanfiction writer the incest thing has been there since the beginning I remember the first time someone said they shipped Rick and Morty Then we got the citadel episode and it just got worse because they showed a Morty that was obsessed with a rick and when people started pointing out the potential ship in that they simply said anything could happen if they have a relationship it's in another universe so it's okay.
@@Fillardmillmore I saw a user on UA-cam that enjoyed shipping the most depraved shit: so long as it had in***t, p********a, and abuse, they liked it. Their reply was "idc if it's controversial, it's not real."
I write and read fanfiction a lot and even I tend to avoid those types of stories. You’d be hard pressed to find a decent Rick and Morty fanfic that doesn’t have so much smut in it.
The clone stuff makes me really uncomfortable, especially as a lesbian. wlw relationship are always treated like fanservice and this really feels no different- and on a scientific standpoint, a clone is biologically the same as your identical twin. There is genuinely so much wrong with it.
see where South Park differs is yes they do alot of shocks but what is far more important is Matt and Trey have a philosophy of " this is our show and we will do our show the way we want and if you don't like it you can kiss my ass " this was proven when they got into trouble with China and instead of doing what most companies do bend the knee to China they both laughed in their fucking face and stuck their middle fingers up at China
The series literally started out with Rick convincing morty to suck his balls in a back to the future spoof. The first episode has rick convincing morty to smuggle a giant space seed up his ass. The series has always been this way. Did you think it wasn't? As a casual rick and morty fan I've never understood the retarded fan base that picks and chooses which crass thing is to far. You fucking moral idiots have always read way too much into a crass show that's always been crass.
Here's one big thing you didn't mention about the infamous Season 5 Incest Baby. In the Gotron episode, when the family gets called out earlier in the episode about the incest baby, the complain that no one is letting them live it down. This an episode just a few episodes after that episode with the sperms. Meaning, they knew how people would react, they expected that reaction, and they wanted this to be an ongoing thing. In season 6 with the Twincest episode, Naruto is even referenced at the end.
Naruto got referenced in the most recent episode, too (the dinosaur one) because Jerry wrote in his book "I'm also a grandfather but I don't want to talk about it"
all the incest jokes are mostly trolling on the kind of terminally online people who want other people to bend to their will, the will of wanting internet to be sanitized of any "controversial" content like yeah, half the jokes are mostly just edgy and trolling and writers know of the controversy it generates, and i'm pretty sure they like it, because it makes people TALK about it, it's pretty much a case of "any publicity is good publicity" the best course of action would be to STOP talking about such, and once they realize it doesn't generate as much "publicity" maybe they'll actually tone it down
5:42 a lot of people seem to be convinced that Space Beth is the real Beth. While I think Space Beth is the clone. If you look at both Beth’s side profiles, you’ll notice their noses are different, Space Beth’s nose has a little curve while Beth’s nose is straight. And if you look at Beth’s side profile in past seasons, you can see that her nose has always been Straight. Some people would say “It’s a change of direction in the animation for the later seasons.” But if that were true, Both Beth’s noses would be exactly the same. It can’t be a coincidence that Space Beth’s nose is always curved while Normal Beth’s has stayed the same. I don’t know if there was ever an offical announcement from one of the shows creators or something confirming Space Beth to be the real Beth, But I just thought this difference had to be pointed out because there’s way too many side profiles of both Beth’s together to pass it off as “just a coincidence” Edit: 6:08 is an example of what I’m talking about, in multiple scenes Space Beth has a slightly different nose shape. It’s hard to miss on first glance but if you pause the episode at the right moment it becomes obvious.
I actually liked the Beth falling in love with herself thing, it reminded me of that one Flapjack episode where Knuckles married a mirror. I find the idea of yourself being the only person you could love kinda funny, it says a lot about the character.
The weird thing though is that if you watch the behind the scenes they say that each episode is written by a different writer. That's supposed to be their new thing now, that each episode gives a specific writer a chance to tell their own story. I mean I know they tried arguing the self incest one was asking a question about narcissism. But why are so many writers for Rick and Morty wanting to use incest for their own separate story.
Odd, perhaps super leftist people have weird sexual preferences that they want to force onto other to normalise it. Good thing this is just a theory and not tru- wait a minute
The new writers think the point of Rick and Morty is to be pure shock value. What’s shocking? Incest, because it makes you disgusted and uncomfortable when brought to your attention.
Also that gimmick with different writers is HORRIBLE. It completely ruins the consistency of the show's comedy and it's clearly changed the show for the worse along with the meta humour. They also tried making serialized stuff which, while that idea isn't really a problem, is dragged down by constant writer swapping
im glad you called this out. whenever an incest moment happens on the show I cringe hard and try to ignore it. The Jerry fucking his mom gag was only kind of funny when he first got the fortune. everything after that was just uncomfortable. especially the whole family making jokes about it like wtf
The family jokes didn't make me that uncomfortable, it's when he's fucking mom slides down, dress rips and she is covered in that purple liquid, and then when she starts chasing him
Want to point out that in the last season of Community, there was an episode that revolved around a couple about to be married, finding out they were first cousins and they ended up getting married anyway. The outro scene was the "writer" proudly takeing credit for the episode and denouncing incest laws. Still one of the better episodes of that season
Season 6 has some banger episodes and honestly I'd place the incest wedding at the midway point. Queer Studies and Advanced Waxing and also the honda episode clear imo. Wedding Videography is extremely funny but not particularly community? It's tone was extremely cynical, and the cynicism of season 6 is something I'm really not a fan of.
im really glad people are covering this. I had to drop this show for a while because of that one dragon episode , it really grossed me out but a part of me hoped it wouldn’t ever stoop that low again. looks like things haven’t changed too much though, which sucks.
6:51 Really? Like yeah the show has moments but it’s clear it’s supposed to be dumb every time. Like an episode where Principal Brown finds out Gumball & Darwin drew clothes on rather then putting on actual clothes but the pixelation. It’s stupid and that’s the point. Not only does Rick and Morty have far more of incest in 65 episodes then the same amount of naked Gumball in 2, 40 episode seasons, but the concept itself is a lot more gross then Gumball. There’s been plenty of jokes about barely covering a naked man in most media because we like seeing how far they can stretch the ways to hide their privates, but why isn’t there as much incest jokes? BECAUSE WHO WANTS TO WATCH A JOKE THAT MAKES YOU THINK OF THAT?!
I definitely have my reasons to believe this has something to do with Mr Harmon. I’ve watched other shows Justin has created and been a main writer for and there definitely isn’t as many incest jokes as there is in modern Rick and Morty. If you take this and Dan’s weird past (the baby skit) into consideration, all fingers will point back to him. That or someone with an unresolved incest kink is holding the writing team hostage. Edit: OH HOW WRONG I WAS. turns out they’re both freaks.
Personally, I think most of the writers are completely on board with exploring incest themes. Maybe there's one guy who keeps reminding them that they shouldn't be exploring this too deeply just for balance reasons.
Kind of unsurprising. I feel like ppl forget Harmon admitted to sexually harassing a woman until she was removed from her position, and he got kicked out for his behavior. I forgot whether he fired her for rejecting his advances or if she quit due to harassment, but I am not surprised that the show ended up super fetish-y while in his control.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the sheer amount of incest jokes or allusions to it within the show in recent years. Someone in the writers room REALLY has a thing for that and I'm sure it's not gonna stop. xD
There's a few incest jokes in Community too, including an entire episode that ends with one of the writers talking straight to camera about how incest should be normalised. It's a consistent factor in his work.
What’s so weird is that episodes like the fortune cookie episode could easily have been written without incest. Like very easily changed, but they didn’t.
all they had to do was make Jerry shit his pants and somehow eat the shit their half the plot the same. similar jokes without incest boom. gimme cash jackass
Also the Beth's having an affair could've been another secret as well. Like Beth is dating Paul Fleishman from the Jerryboree and Space-Beth is covering for her.
I think the way you discussed this represents a large problem with the industry as a whole rather than just this show. It is very common for writers to insert their personal qualities into their writing.
Nothing wrong with putting your own personality in your works. But if you dont dosclose that youre putting your fetishes in your work, or maybe the self insert is annoyingly op, yeah, we have a problem. Every writer puts their own personality into their works, no way around it really.
This raises questions about the purpose of art. Is the work meant for the author to express themselves fully without compromise or please an audience? All the incest jokes are still weird, creepy and dumb tho.
Most writing comes from a place of personal experience. That’s perfectly normal. What isn’t good is when you put your dick in your writing because then you end up weirding people out with your dumb fetishes.
Not to mention the plot hole with evil morty and ricks origin story. We have seen Rick holding a baby morty or taking care of a morty who obviously isn’t the one we follow, hinting heavily that evil morty is ricks original morty, or at least that Rick had a different one, but they that’s gone now without explanation
@@char1211 That always confused me, since it was established in the episode where that backstory appeared, that it was always fake and made up, yet now it's canon?
The Beth episode, specifically, was my breaking point with the show because I actually thought about something like it when Space Beth was first introduced but thought I was being the dirty one. Turns out I’m apparently clairvoyent because GOD that episode still has me shook to this day. Also, it’s never made clear which Beth is the real one or the clone but the worst part is that the episode makes sense since Beth was revealed to be a sociopathic narcissist.
I liked that episode, I would have preferred it to be a friendship thing but it was nice for Beth to work through the self-doubt and insecurities she was experiencing by having someone to love who knew in and out her feelings and didn't reject her. to have someone know her that well and validate her was nice to see. also I don't really see beth as a narcissist, she is definitely capable of putting others first and self-reflection, if she was a narcissist she would never have felt bad at all for cheating on jerry imo that being said i hate all the incest PLEASE can it stop
I don't understand why the episode is shocking people. It's exactly the sort of thing she'd do, and it's very fitting. The one with Morty and his sister having an incest baby was worse.
I noticed that the newer Rick and Morty episodes feel way more like standard supernatural Sitcom plots. Stuff like Rick and Jerry investigating the power of fortune cookies sounds like something Brian and Stewie would do in Family Guy.
You feel that way but go back and watch the first few seasons, it's just as dumb. People's perceptions are just changing just because it's now up to its sixth season.
6:46 Let’s not even compare Gumball to this shit, Gumball is absurdist and the plot needed something bad that they would want to stop, so Gumball being publicly embarrassed is the most logical option. R&M could’ve easily done something similar, but instead went for incest because of writers fetish
Don't forget the Glorzo episode which had Rick and Morty kissing by proxy and the train episode where Rick asks Morty to kiss him. And I actually agree with you on the fortune cookie episode. It was a decent idea for a story and the action scenes were some of the most fun I've seen them have in a while. I just wish it didn't have to have THAT to get the plot going.
@@draccqueen1770 That might sound wierd but I think it was one of the BEST fortunes he could have gotten because when I watched all the reactions of the episode almost EVERYONE was afraid he would actually do it. The show was on that incest thing since the very beginning and killing anyone doesn't really matter now since our first two Jerrys and most likely their mom's are already dead! Who knows at this point am I wrong? Morty, Summer and Rick had a soul orgy and Morty and Summer have a kid! Jerry fucking his mom became a greater and more threatning possibiliy than anyone getting hurt or dying!
There is also an episode of community where the study group ruins a wedding by finding out the groom and bride are related or just share the same grandma or great grandma. That’s what I first thought of with the incest jokes
I'm very late to this video, but I want to talk about a moment that happened back when Rick and Morty was gaining popularity. There were a lot of people in the fandom who shipped RickxMorty, and some fans asked one of the creators (can't remember which one) on Twitter if they condemned the ship. The response was something along the lines of, "Well, it's very possible that RickxMorty is canon in one of the parallel universes, so we don't care what people ship!" I remember the response caused a bit of a shitstorm on Tumblr. I didn't pay much attention to the controversy back then, but now with all of the incest stuff going on in the later seasons, I can't help but wonder if that initial response was a sign of things to come.
Its such a waste because the episode easily has some of the best action in the entire SERIES (no hyperbole) but it has to revolve around such a juvenile plot line
@@MetaBro I thought this episodes action really stood out tbh. They way they had fortune cookies specially related to fighting and seeing how rick overcomes literal fate through his genius and improv was pretty sick
yea i know the scene was so fucked up but it was so brilliantly written it was Hilarious it was even starting to piss Rick off and now the show is perm changed any time we see Space Beth we're gonna think about that episode they banged
Personally I don't consider that actual incest so its not as offensive to me because they are not siblings or twins just clones. Part of the reason why people have problems with incest is not just the biological aspects, but the familiar aspects too. However Beth and space Beth aren't sisters, didn't grow up as sisters and their bond is limited to the recent developments.
Potentially unrelated, but the 2nd to last community episode (also by Dan Harmon) literally revolves around a wedding that turns out to be cousins so it's not even limited to the one show
It was very uncomfortable, but I don't care the whole episode was absolutely hilarious. Also stopping Jerry from pulling an Oedipus as the motivation to take down a fortune cookie factory is the type of absurdity I expect from this show.
Wasn't the "it was very uncomfortable" part intentional? Like Jerry reads something absolutely disgusting on a fortune cookie, only to be laughed at for taking it seriously, only for the fortune cookies to have real magic bullshit going on so it has to be taken very seriously (and is even by Rick). Like the Beth thing wasn't incest, and Naruto was such a stupid plotline that you'd be kind of silly to take it seriously. Worst case, this is just a meh episode. It's really not a "writers inserting their fetishes thing"; they just used a touchy topic to get touchy reactions.
I haven't watched any more than the first two seasons but I did not expect this tone from the later ones. Though it does make sense that the only person Beth would fall for is herself given she's somehow more narcissistic than her dad.
if she was a narcissist she wouldn't feel bad about the shitty things she does. shes not a narcissist just a terrible emotionally damage egotistical person
Its gotten to the point I'm now warning my partner about incest episodes so when we watch the show together we completely skip them. I didn't think I would ever need to give a warning like that or that this topic would become a reoccurring one
Both the Beth episode and the Jerry Fortune cookie episode are really good episodes. The Beth episode has a lot of backwards character development for Beth (Beth’s?) and it’s utterly hilarious when’s summer and Morty find out. And the Jerry one is great once you get past the initial concept because it’s a super fun and interesting concept of using the fortunes to fight.
@@tyty-xm8fw Some adults grew up with heavy censorship so they're built around the idea of being ignorant to things as a form of growth for some reason.
THANK YOU!!! The incest inserts are too much and you explained it perfectly! It's becoming a total fetish that some writer is nonconsently involving all of us. I am so tired of this and its glaringly obvious
I thought I was the only one who noticed this. I was cringinggggg so hard at the fortune cookie episode. There's some incest shit in Community too, Harmon's other show. Kinda surprised studios are letting it fly so often, especially when whenever it happens the public response does not seem to be very positive about it.
clearly you aren't high IQ enough to see that the incest is a metaphor. us big brain Rick and Morty viewers see how deep and interesting it is it's a metaphor for the incest kink one of the writers have lol
I don't think it's ever explicitly said which one of the Beth's is a clone, Rick looked away when switching the tubes so he wouldn't know himself. The clone could be either one of them
Of course the writers could "change" this in a moments notice, but I disagree with the it could be either one. Rick asked beth if she wanted to travel space with a more motherly clone taking care of the family. All of a sudden we have a space beth? It's kind of obvious space beth is the real one.
@@iSeeEZEkillI think rick pulled a mauler twin and made it so both think they are the original since he could not bring himself to kill Beth even if it's a clone
Something that solidifies this as Harmon's doing is that this kind of stuff was in his previous show, Community. The second to last episode is about two students getting married only to find out they're cousins, leading to them calling off the wedding before getting back together. It even ends with one of the writers taking credit for the episode and giving a really preachy pro-incest message. Either A. Dan Harmon made a writer falsely admit to writing that episode, or B. He is surrounding himself with people who are into that kind of shit. Either way, that shit is nasty. EDIT: It turns out the "writer" is an actor they hired for the episode which just further proves it's Dan's idea
The Beth thing was weird I’ll admit but despite it I guess I can understand it because it really does show how similar she is to Rick and how she’s a narcissist as well
Speaking of incest, reminds me of a tweet by one of the creators about how an alternate universe with Rick and Morty dating must exist. Like why mention it?
I like how Mark's avatar seems to be more flowy now, and yeah I hadn't noticed how much incest is in the show nowadays, the baby thing did make me go eugh when it aired
I agree with this video. A lot of people hide their true feelings and intentions in jokes (entire books have been written on the psychology of that). Thats not to to say that everyone who makes a bad incest joke is into that kind of thing . However when a writers room , ( coming from the community of weirdos that is hollywood ) keep making jokes about it, you have to wonder where the joke ends and the psychological projection begins...... Also, thumbs up for use to the puggsy soundtrack at 8:38. That game had amazing music.
What sucks about this is that season 6 is actually a return to form for the series. They've finally come back focusing on and exploring one single sci-fi concept per episode, like they did in season 1 and 2, except that, this time the family doesn't hate each other. They just need to fire the one In-cest guy in the writers room. We all know it's one dude.
I do wanna say that the Powerpuff girls 2016 thing was just a well-meaning joke with MASSIVE unfortunate implications. The guy that charactet was based on didn't even create the character or write his debut episode. That show was kind of infamous for its constant Easter eggs of the crew, and this was just cupposed to be of those, but again, there were massive unfortunate implications
@Skankhunt42 I found it absolutely horrible. it was like a train wreck I couldn't look away from but I'm glad you found it funny, for all my suffering at least others had a good time
Justin roiland himself said I think in a h3 podcast that Rick and morty was meant to be way shorter than it is. He said that it got so popular they made them extend the show a bunch forcing them to put out some sub par episodes and not telling the actual story, kind of like filler episodes in an anime
I think I'm desensitized to whatever the hell happens in this show like I actually don't know why I keep watching. Like everything that happens just get stuffed right in the back of my mind and I just keep watching.
Honestly yeah the year and a half or longer between seasons killed all momentum I had. I was a die hard fan , bought the seasons, binged the commentary tracks, recommended it to as many people as I could. My cousin and I would talk theories and despite the death of tv we made it a point to catch new episodes as soon as we could live. But years go by and I found something new. And hearing it got renewed for several more seasons just gave me mental fatigue. I didn’t even watch season 5. Just kinda forgot about it. I grew up
I always find stuff like that... Odd. Like, I have my fair share of weird fetishes, and I write stories, and I don't insert them into everything all the time. How hard is it to just... not?
I love the classic family bonding game of "find the writer's blatant fetish", mama and papa always have a hearty chuckle when they find out it's inflation or vore
I started watching the show just a bit ago, and I'm currently on season 5. I like the series for its universe and meta narrative, not all the mature-themed gross-out and deliberately disturbing shit - two things that make me avoid adult animated series, but a friend recommended it and I was sold on the universe and the entertaining ways the characters interact with it. Tbh, I hadn't really noticed incest jokes disproportionately to the rest of the shock-humor the series does, but now I'm starting to wonder whether or not it's intentional because of the endless shock value it has, or just the writer's poorly disguised fetish...
Same I love the story but the constant jokes it gets redundant but I try to focus more on the story than anything the dragon episode was over the top. if they’re going for shock humor I get it. But it starts to make you wonder what is the writer thinking
I don't get why people think clone beth is the same as the other ones. They're not relatives or twins, they're clones (literally the same person). It's a pretty good deconstruction of narcissistic personalities at best and advanced smasturbationn at worst. I don't find it creepy like the the giant baby.

He showed some stuff from the first season at an animation festival in Norway, turned to the audience and said something akin to "now that I look at it again, Rick and Morty used to be a lot funnier"

So Beth is now, not only in love with herself, but is actually dating herself. I didn't think there could be a bigger narcissist than what she was before, but she managed to outdo herself.
That’s the only reason that I’m okay with the episode. Feels like…character development in the bad direction?
@@RemixerUltimate It doesn't matter if the way a character is going is negative or positive, if there's new developments, then it's technically character development.
Some characters inherently are meant to develop negatively, like Griffith from Berserk. His descent into madness is development for his character, but I think anyone would argue that where he's gone and going in the future is probably nowhere good.

Pickle rick comes to mind 😒
Screw Susan Sarandon psychiatrist, I would've rather watched the Danny Trejo subplot as a entire episode plot.
Season-6 actually has a lot more cohesive writing and character study.
But that doesn't create the conflict of Jerry not wanting to do it and the kids thinking it's funny.
In that show it told Steve he was going to spank the monkey in the zoo, which is certainly better than the fortune we got in R&M.
fr because i would have loved the episode if the fortune wouldve been literally anything else
That's not funny or interesting in the slightest. The thought of you having to fuck your mom is likely a lot more terrifying than the thought of you cheating, no? I will say though the incest baby and Beth shit was very unfunny imo
I also miss when Rick was genuinely scared, now he’s depicted as some kind of unstoppable force
He’s seemed freaked out at times this season which I appreciated.

Because they're talentless hacks.
The thing about the Smiths not feeling like a real family is also especially true, I think the writers have gotten too comfortable with treating these characters as just 5 people who live with each other
Season 6 is pretty great so far, but it was really odd to me how neither Jerry or Beth reacted at the sight of their children's corpses, while in the same episode we saw Morty get hella emotional over his original Jerry and family
It's not like they've gone through the same shit Rick and Morty have to be cool with this kinda thing, we saw how it fucked Morty up when he buried himself for the first time, but now they all just get over it in 5 seconds
I don't even want them to make a whole thing about it, but adding small details to show their bonds would go a long way
Rick himself has actually become the most realastic family member, funnily enough, actually feeling like Morty and Summer's grandpa

@Skankhunt42 low tier as in quality. Not publicity.
Naruto got referenced in the most recent episode, too (the dinosaur one) because Jerry wrote in his book "I'm also a grandfather but I don't want to talk about it"
all the incest jokes are mostly trolling on the kind of terminally online people who want other people to bend to their will, the will of wanting internet to be sanitized of any "controversial" content
like yeah, half the jokes are mostly just edgy and trolling and writers know of the controversy it generates, and i'm pretty sure they like it, because it makes people TALK about it, it's pretty much a case of "any publicity is good publicity"
the best course of action would be to STOP talking about such, and once they realize it doesn't generate as much "publicity" maybe they'll actually tone it down
I really don’t understand why the selfcest plot line was so hated. I saw it as narcissism personified.
The writers aren't that smart

I thought we didn't know which Beth was the clone. Even Rick was ignorant because he removed their ID tags and mixed them up.
You can tell the difference in their nose shape
no one knows which is the clone.
None of them are his beth
I don’t know if there was ever an offical announcement from one of the shows creators or something confirming Space Beth to be the real Beth, But I just thought this difference had to be pointed out because there’s way too many side profiles of both Beth’s together to pass it off as “just a coincidence”
Edit: 6:08 is an example of what I’m talking about, in multiple scenes Space Beth has a slightly different nose shape.
Autosexual
Except Capn Knuckles was a god tier character, Beth is the least funny character in the show imo.
no, its more likely that she is more of a narcissist
they even implies it through rick and the end credit scene
Ay I know u bud, glad u r still ok
That's just Narisscism to the Extreme.
Dan must have some standards the writers have to put in.. such as incest

Came here after Adult Swim severed ties with Justin Roiland
im glad you called this out. whenever an incest moment happens on the show I cringe hard and try to ignore it. The Jerry fucking his mom gag was only kind of funny when he first got the fortune. everything after that was just uncomfortable. especially the whole family making jokes about it like wtf

Want to point out that in the last season of Community, there was an episode that revolved around a couple about to be married, finding out they were first cousins and they ended up getting married anyway. The outro scene was the "writer" proudly takeing credit for the episode and denouncing incest laws.

@@andredelacerdasantos4439 doubt theyre on board. harmon is a slave driver. he has a history of sexually harassing female staff as well
Kind of unsurprising.
@@ma.2089 yeah he’s always been a bit of a freak😭😭
@Abraham Johnathan Didn’t Justin fly to Epstein’s island?
Weirdly the incest jokes went away when Roiland left the show.... so make of that what you will....
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the sheer amount of incest jokes or allusions to it within the show in recent years. Someone in the writers room REALLY has a thing for that and I'm sure it's not gonna stop. xD
its dan harmon. he has zoophile fetishes too
@@turboterps Damn! I looked it up! I never knew about that. Dan really should keep his weird fetishes to himself.
@@turboterps do *not* look that up, I did not want to see Dan Harmons hairy ass in such disturbing context. jesus fuck
There's a few incest jokes in Community too, including an entire episode that ends with one of the writers talking straight to camera about how incest should be normalised. It's a consistent factor in his work.
@@peacemaster8117 Well I guess now I really know that it's Dan Harmon if I had any doubts before!
What’s so weird is that episodes like the fortune cookie episode could easily have been written without incest. Like very easily changed, but they didn’t.
Like just make him naked in public or something embarrassing like with the already mentioned gumball episode
all they had to do was make Jerry shit his pants and somehow eat the shit their half the plot the same. similar jokes without incest boom. gimme cash jackass
It could be "youre going to kill youre mother" and it could pan out exactly the same but he almost kills her instead...
Also the Beth's having an affair could've been another secret as well. Like Beth is dating Paul Fleishman from the Jerryboree and Space-Beth is covering for her.
Now they have TWO Big problems
I haven't thought about Rick and Morty in years and this is NOT how I was expecting this show to go 😭
I think the way you discussed this represents a large problem with the industry as a whole rather than just this show. It is very common for writers to insert their personal qualities into their writing.
I think Boondocks did this best imo.
It’s good to put personal qualities into writing. Just not your fetishes. If you don’t put ANY of yourself in your work it’ll be soulless though.
The Rick we follow can't have an "original" Morty, his wife and Beth died long before the Smith family could've existed.
@@char1211 that’s my point. It’s a plot hole
@@char1211 That always confused me, since it was established in the episode where that backstory appeared, that it was always fake and made up, yet now it's canon?
@@slimothyjames282 Oh no it's shown in a later episode what actually happened, it's just very similar
@@char1211 Oh, I guess that I never saw that one
The Beth episode, specifically, was my breaking point with the show because I actually thought about something like it when Space Beth was first introduced but thought I was being the dirty one. Turns out I’m apparently clairvoyent because GOD that episode still has me shook to this day. Also, it’s never made clear which Beth is the real one or the clone but the worst part is that the episode makes sense since Beth was revealed to be a sociopathic narcissist.
I liked that episode, I would have preferred it to be a friendship thing but it was nice for Beth to work through the self-doubt and insecurities she was experiencing by having someone to love who knew in and out her feelings and didn't reject her. to have someone know her that well and validate her was nice to see. also I don't really see beth as a narcissist, she is definitely capable of putting others first and self-reflection, if she was a narcissist she would never have felt bad at all for cheating on jerry imo
that being said i hate all the incest PLEASE can it stop
That episode was fine tbh, it fit well with the character. The "Jerry fucking his mom" shit was absolutely uneccessary.
I don't understand why the episode is shocking people. It's exactly the sort of thing she'd do, and it's very fitting. The one with Morty and his sister having an incest baby was worse.
@@cortster12 yeah, she's literally just female rick why wouldn't she go as far as he has?
it's cringe inserted just for the coomers
I noticed that the newer Rick and Morty episodes feel way more like standard supernatural Sitcom plots. Stuff like Rick and Jerry investigating the power of fortune cookies sounds like something Brian and Stewie would do in Family Guy.
Just gonna say it; show hasn't been good since season 2.
@@shaitet I’ve been enjoying it lately but that’s just personal preference ig
You feel that way but go back and watch the first few seasons, it's just as dumb. People's perceptions are just changing just because it's now up to its sixth season.

Literally a regular show episode
6:46 Let’s not even compare Gumball to this shit, Gumball is absurdist and the plot needed something bad that they would want to stop, so Gumball being publicly embarrassed is the most logical option. R&M could’ve easily done something similar, but instead went for incest because of writers fetish

And I actually agree with you on the fortune cookie episode. It was a decent idea for a story and the action scenes were some of the most fun I've seen them have in a while. I just wish it didn't have to have THAT to get the plot going.

>Rick and Morty action scenes.
Geez ok.
There is also an episode of community where the study group ruins a wedding by finding out the groom and bride are related or just share the same grandma or great grandma. That’s what I first thought of with the incest jokes
NOW THIS IS A MAN WHO KNOWS HOW TO MARRY HIS COUSIN
Okay but that episode was gold
I haven’t seen it but the idea of Rick trying to get the power of fortune cookies is such a cool idea
it's just sad such a cool idea was written around... welll, _that._
Its such a waste because the episode easily has some of the best action in the entire SERIES (no hyperbole) but it has to revolve around such a juvenile plot line

The Beth incest joke was one of the few Rick and Morty jokes that had me on the floor seeing Morty and summers faces as they found out was too funny
yea i know the scene was so fucked up but it was so brilliantly written it was Hilarious it was even starting to piss Rick off and now the show is perm changed any time we see Space Beth we're gonna think about that episode they banged

@@kurtpunchesthings2411 lol true so will beth
Although incest joke are bad but the beth one definitely made me on the floor
Completely agree.
It's really not a "writers inserting their fetishes thing"; they just used a touchy topic to get touchy reactions.
in isolation the episode works but combined with ALL the OTHER incest episodes its a little suspicious
Agree, it was funny but the plot line is a bit too suspicious
The episode was hilarious and I was totally invested in Jerry not doing it. At the end I was in tears.
I’m convinced the reason Rick is so ridiculously overpowered is because he’s Dan Harmon’s self insert

I thought I was the only one who noticed this. I was cringinggggg so hard at the fortune cookie episode. There's some incest shit in Community too, Harmon's other show. Kinda surprised studios are letting it fly so often, especially when whenever it happens the public response does not seem to be very positive about it.
If Dan Harmon never saw this video, the new episode would have Rick and Jerry making out for sure

clearly you aren't high IQ enough to see that the incest is a metaphor. us big brain Rick and Morty viewers see how deep and interesting it is
it's a metaphor for the incest kink one of the writers have lol
Topic aside, I like the way the avatar is ever so slightly animated when changing poses, very cool!
yeah it's justin roiland

This is how I feel about Summer
I don't know why people like the Vat of Acid or the Rick and Morty Fake Breakup Episode then
Well to be honest, I like Morty slowly becoming like Rick, but not becoming a mini-Rick.
... The Citadel episode must be some mixed bag then...
5:40 we don’t know shes the real Beth.
Rick doesn’t even know.
If he keeps it up, it might become seen as a Dan Schneider-esque thing of "OK, this guy is just into that".
My guy, the "writer" was a paid actor. lol
It's hard to not agree!
5:48 You are actually wrong we don't know which Beth is the real Beth because Rick didn't want to make a choice for his daughter.
These writers can't write two woman getting along without making them lesbians lmao
I think they are aware of their reputation and just trolling the audience at this point, the last episode cemented it for me.

Justin roiland himself said I think in a h3 podcast that Rick and morty was meant to be way shorter than it is. He said that it got so popular they made them extend the show a bunch forcing them to put out some sub par episodes and not telling the actual story, kind of like filler episodes in an anime

1:24 The demonic voice effect got me 💀
Honestly yeah the year and a half or longer between seasons killed all momentum I had.

How hard is it to just... not?
but if I don't insert my Inflation Diaper Spaghetti fetish in everything, how will people know I have weird fetishies
I love the classic family bonding game of "find the writer's blatant fetish", mama and papa always have a hearty chuckle when they find out it's inflation or vore
That awkward moment, when you find one of your sisters stories feature an incest fetish... And she says you aren’t her type.
Now it really has a problem.
Brian Griffin behind the window caught me off guard, pretty funny ngl
