This was an excellent pick - not just the song (their best IMO), but also for the actual live performance, complete with their look and demeanor. If this live concert clip was the only metal recording that survives a thousand years, future archaeologists will be able to fundamentally understand the genre.

Did take JP a few albums to figure out their image in the late '70's, their stage persona as it were, but once they adopted singer Rob Halfords denim and leather and chains aesthetic it all fell into place, it literally became "THE metal fashion", the rock and roll/heavy metal uniform if you will; even a pair of worn-out skinny jeans, a black hoodie, a studded belt w/a wallet chain, emo bands adopted that visual aesthetic, modified it and maybe didn't realize where it originated. Such a cool band, true pioneers in so many ways, "Sabbath made it Heavy, but Priest made it Metal!"

'Sinner' was the opening track on Judas Priest's 3rd album 'Sin after sin' in 1977... the band had been signed to indie label Gull Records in the UK and were going bust, until a US label CBS Records signed them in '77 (They had to abandon their Gull contract and get no royalties from 1st two Priest albums) But Priest was still new to the game, and didn't have this 'leather & studs' image back then... the Harley bike onstage came later in 1978... In '77, they had to deliver in the studio... so Deep Purple's bassist Roger Glover came in and produced the record 'Sin after sin'... Their drummer Alan Moore was fired, and Simon Phillips played drums for the band in the studio, but declined to join Priest.
Released in 1977, 'Sin after sin' was not a big record at first... it went gold years later in the US. Judas Priest toured North America for the first time as an opening band for R.E.O. Speedwagon... and people were not ready for that intense level of heavy metal. It was Rob Halford (vocals) who got into leather wear that he bought at an S&M shop in London back in 1978... and it looked great, so the other members started wearing leather jackets & metal studs as well... By 1979, both the UK and US had begun to embrace Judas Priest commercially... they were big in Japan by that point. It was the 'British steel' album in 1980 that gave them their first gold record.
By 1982, Judas Priest was playing arenas worldwide and was the biggest heavy metal band at that time... Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson recalled opening for Priest in 1982 and said it was like "a panzer division rolling over you" and this concert video captured Priest in their prime. Dave Holland (drums) was on the kit from 1980 til 1989, and got into some trouble years later... but he was a phenomenal drummer as u can see... he passed away in 2018.

Yea 1982 was THE year ..... graduated high school, my first band played out for the first time ..... we were called TRYANT with an ode to Priest ..... did alot of their tunes but SINNER was 10 notches above. Man the pipes of Rob back then were incredible. Seeing them for the first time in '81 was gamechanging with a young Iron Maiden warming up. Man if only we knew how historic those shows have become. How people say what a great time to be alive, much less in your teens. I am honored to be in that group & witness the birth of modern metal. Cheers!!
