- Can you believe it's been almost three years since I last analyzed Rob Halford and Judas Priest? I couldn't, and I'm ashamed. So what better way to return to one of the greats than at one of the greatest rock concerts of all time (so I'm told): Live Aid! This is gonna be really good... and I'm going to suggest another JP tune - one that shows Rob's ability to repeatedly and rapidly jump octaves while maintaining total control of his voice - Dissident Aggressor, probably the album version - I haven't dove into live performances so I am unable to recommend one. Just be prepared for his introductory scream. I'd be almost afraid to hear it in headphones!

“A Touch of Evil” from the album Painkiller definitely highlights R.H.’s incredible high range. More of a metal ballad insofar as the tempo is slower than the rest of the album.

That IS a great song. The one I like more which I think really shows his prowess and vocal range is Blood Red Skies from Ram It Down.
Yup .... that's 1 of my many favourites of JP's production. A very dark and sinister picture of sound. When i started playing a gtr, as a 10-11 yrs old kid, over decades a go. There wasn't gear, nor gizmo's i could financially reach. Well .....that was corrected a many decades later, as a grown up guy. What a joy it was, when u finally started to (nearly, but just nearly) sound, like your teenage idols (K.K. Glenn, Dave, Adrian, etc), w all the nyances, harmonics and flutes, etc. Btw ... as a youngster, i could reach RH's high notes ... The Green Manalishi, w the 2 Pronged Crown, from Unleashed in The East album. Nowadays, no flipping chance. Not even w a help of a nutcracker @ my ... u know where. 😎

My fave song. Been to 5 of their shows and screamed for it every time and got it. Just perfection.
It would be nigh impossible to make a top 3 list of Priest songs, but if I did, 'The Sentinel' would 100% be on that list.
I saw Judas Priest a year ago when Halford was 71 years old. We were 11 rows back from the stage. At one point Halford sat on a stair on the left side of the stage, put his microphone down by his side, and let out a yell. Then he let out another one. We clearly heard him above the PA and not just a whisper-it was strong and clear. The guitars may be tuned down a bit, but Rob Halford is absolutely making the best of his remaining ability. It was a great show.
I saw them in Vegas several years ago. It was wild hearing a 60 something man triggering the limiters on the PA in the hard rock
Background on the song.The band was recording their British Steel album at Tittenhurst Park, an estate once owned by John Lennon. One night around 4 a.m., guitarist Glenn Tipton set up his amp and started working out riffs in the big room where they did most of their work - the one where Lennon wrote "Imagine." Halford's bedroom was upstairs, and it woke him up. He came down, asked Tipton to turn down his amp, and told him, "You're living after midnight down here, you are!" Tipton replied, "That is a great title for a song." Halford wrote the lyric that day.

@metalmark1214 I read in an interview that Glenn Tipton was in a pub nearby, came back at 1:00- 2:00 o'clock and then started to work some ideas he had until early in the morning and the rest is as you said.

Live Aid was nearly 40 years ago now! Unbelievable 🤯 when this was new, Woodstock had only been a mere 16 years earlier! I remember this! I’m old 👨🏻🦳 and those young people in the audience, are in their 60s now!
If you listen to "Love bites" or "The Sentinel" from the FUEL FOR LIFE TOUR (86) you'll be just floored ......
But I think "The Sinner" from "Unleashed in the east" live is my favorite scream/squeals the METAL g*d delivers ... ALWAYS get a kick out of them and get some injection of energy whenever I need some ......

Yes, the sounds he makes at the end of 'Love Bites' on Fuel For Life and the sounds he makes in the breakdown of the live '82 version of 'Desert Plains' are not human sounds. Can't decide if it's divine or devilish, but definitely not human.
I saw judas priest only one time back in the eighties. Screaming for vengeance tour. They were a great live band on stage. Rob hallford is both a showman and incredible vocalist. Some band called iron maiden opened for them and they weren't half bad either.

Let me venture what may be a controversial opinion: You have not touched the best of Rob Halford's singing. Like a lot of reactors, you have fallen victim to the "popular" songs on the auspices that the most popular songs will necessarily be the best songs. In Judas Priest's case, that is wrong. Their best songs, and Rob's greatest vocals, are NOT their popular hits with the most views. "Beyond the Realms of Death" "Epitaph" "The Sentinel" and their newest hit "Trial by Fire" - released just last month (!) are songs I wish you'd react to. But, as always, I will be in the minority.
You really need to do one of their recent versions of “Diamonds and Rust” . Sung as a ballad. You could really break down his vocals. Off the charts

@@jospehbloseph7172 Best version with out a doubt, and everyone is pushing ballads. Unleashed in the East starts his sweet spot. This is where Priest took a Joan Baez cover and made it metal and made it theirs, and it is glorious.
You still have not heard what Halford is capable of. (I think he sounds pretty rough here, like he stayed too late, drinking too much.) Also, Midnight is more of a radio-friendly Hard Rock anthem than a Metal song. Hope you follow up with one of the suggestions offered in the comments. My favorites include DIAMONDS AND RUST (the Joan Baez song), THE GREEN MANALISHI (a Fleetwood Mac cover), and ELECTRIC EYE.
I agree. None of what she's listened to of him so far imo showcases his true capabilities.
This song is very basic for him, and rough from touring (the version of Victim of Changes she reacted to is also rough).
I know that she's likes to see the singer live if possible, so I think The Sentinel live from 1986 would be good. Or Beyond the Realms of Death live 1979 (there is footage).
Overall though Halford does have a more extreme style compared to his peers (by that I mean those such as Bruce Dickinson, Dio, Gillan, Coverdale etc). And is more abrasive and piercing than those guys - which exemplifies metal, but is less broadly appealing. I suspect this harder abrasive edge is why Priest didn't make it as big as some of their hard rock peers - they excell at a style that is a bit edgier.

@MidnightIsolde This is an astute comment about why Halford/Priest don't get their proper recognition. I think the issue, however, goes even broader than just the fact that they have a more extreme style. Rob and the band are much more diverse than Dio, Dickinson, and the rest. Songs like Living After Midnight were highly influential and many bands copied this specific style so that 30-40 years later, these type of songs don't have the same impact (since so many variations were made by other bands). There were other songs that Priest did that were more extreme (e.g. Painkiller) that other bands were simply not capable of copying and so those songs stand out more today by the true metalheads. Bands like Iron Maiden, however, had a consistent style of songs that other bands could not copy and so they're unduly given a higher standing today than Priest does. It's a real shame that people don't recognize that Priest invented so many styles of metals, and some of it doesn't hold up as well today only because so many have copied what they were capable of it to death.
She keeps ignoring what she has been told. I told her many times to look at the Live 86 album/video and also suggested album-version songs.
I was there at Live Aid. I loved Priest’s performance but the prevailing question my buddies & I had was “How can they be dressed in full leather in this heat???” It was early and already in the low 90’s!
I know what you mean. Literally, used to wear lots of black going to heavy metal concerts. It's a tradeoff and commitment to being a metalhead
Quite honesely, I love Judas Priest. I pay for a ticket not only to hear the band, but to hear Rob belt out his screams. Worth the price of admission
Judas Priest was the band that turned me onto Heavy Metal and I've been hooked for 50 years. Rob Halford's voice is absolutely phenomenal and legendary

You could never do enough Judas Priest they are just so diverse in their music as compared of a metal band songs, like Epitaph, or Nostradamus, or Run Of The Mill, or Turbo Lover, or the new song that just came out panic attack are all so different. Rob truly has an amazing voice.
Judas Priest's Fuel for Life tour is great (all live recordings on youtube). The Sentinel especially. Rob Halford is totally on point and according to his book, it was his first sober tour (1986).
Live Vengeance is better - Rob's vocal prime was 1977 to 1983.
@@dmitryowenslive vengeance you can see him struggling a bit on some songs, also he sounds with too much distortion or gravel. Fuel for life he sounds a lot cleaner, goes easier for the high notes

Nah. He killed it on Riding On The Wind and pretty much all the other songs too. And Rob sounds best when he has that grit and raw edge in his voice.
I've listened to The Sentinel from that performance plenty of time and it's great, but recently I delved into Out in the Cold and I gotta say that's the best track from recorded Fuel for Life. You can compare it to the studio version and be astounded by how powerful yet clean Rob's voice is live.

It is a song with deep meaning lyrics.
Rob Halford uses his most dramatic and high notes he has.
Especially after the guitar solo the track builds a crescendo and then Rob shines.

You have got to analyse Judas Priest live in Dallas 1986 - Fuel for Life tour. Their performances were some of the best and Halford's vocals are superb. It showcases how easily he can jump around the vocal range. I'd suggest Love Bites or The Sentinel
IMHO, Rob Halford is the GOAT of heavy metal singers. Still going strong; still got the control and range. There's early 80's footage of him singing Screaming for Vengeance that is epic. Very different from this relaxed performance. He's working so hard. Very impressive guy.
It's unreal how he's kept that up for sooooo long. You'd think anyone doing stuff like painkiller would have shredded bungie cords for a throat by now. I definitely think he takes it a little easier on himself now, and save the most belting and wailing for the parts where it really emphasizes rather than throughout the song.
Dear Elizabeth...Based on your comments below and in the video, I'm lead to wonder if a tea time interview with Rob Halford is in the works? If so, it's my duty to warn you that as good as you are as the Queen of Vocal Coaches, you are still so unprepared to meet the Metal God with the JP songs you have reacted to so far. An auspicious meeting between two legends, such as you and Rob, needs to be approached with the utmost preparation and sanctity. Please pay attention to the comments and listen to the variety of live songs in the '82 Live Vengeance and '86 Fuel For Life tours such as The Ripper, Desert Plains, Riding on the Wind, Turbo Lover, Freewheel Burnin', the Sentinel, etc. But also listen to those hidden studio gems such as Blood Red Skies, Hear Come the Tears, and Run of the Mill. JP never wanted to sell out and so they often reserved their best performances for their true Metal fans. And Halford's vocal abilities are distributed across so many songs and could never be contained in just one. There is also Halford's band Fight from the 90s and his solo career where he experimented with different styles. And, of course, there are the later years in JP where Rob still found ways to contribute in spite of not having the full range he used to have. So much to do! But a fortuitous meeting between you and the Metal God would be a solemn event that would be preserved in history and so it demands complete diligence!

You can never go wrong with the mighty PRIEST!! Halford has that type of voice that is very unique and no one else could ever manage to copy or sound like.another one of metal's great front men! Rob is still touring, and sounds fantastic. If you can find "Diamonds and Rust" live, its a slow song, but the range is incredible. He is named the "Metal GOd" for a reason. He has waved the flag for heavy metal for over 40 years.
She saw him headlining at Bloodstock in 2021.
I saw him live once when he had his band called "Fight". That was some great heavy metal music there. I still have the autographed radio station bumper sticker that I won with the tickets I won to see the show. This was 1993.

I googled Halford's octave range and people can't decide between 4 and 7! I saw him live at the Priest Feast and there is no doubt he has one helluva voice. Victim of Changes is my fave. Sad Wings of Destiny is an album I can always listen to.
As far as I know he had a FULL 4 Octave Range which is pretty insane when you consider that's 48 of the 88 notes on a Piano!
I sang, and played either Bass or Guitar, for several "Club Bands" in the 80s and early 90s and there were 3 Vocalists I cringed at trying to replicate, despite being a "High Tenor", and they were Milienko Matijevic (Steelheart), Rik Emmett (Triumph), and of course Rob Halford....thankfully Slaughter wasn't on the radar for any of my Bands!

I'm praying that Elizabeth will do a vocal analysis of Dreamer Deceiver (studio version). It really showcases Rob's mind-blowing vocal range.
Its about 4.5 i have the same range...here come the tears shows hos lowest range and dreamer deceiver is the highest. He was my my biggest influenced until he started doing that "Fight" crap...it took a lot of his voice away for years
She did victim of changes, that live one outdoors in like 83. I agree she needs to do something old though come on let’s rally get her to do something strong some thing from stained class, hell-bent for leather, or sin after sin
One of my all time favorite bands. I was lucky enough to see them live in concert in the early 80s and let me tell you they don't disappoint. As I was finding my way through music as an awkward teenager, Screaming for Vengeance was the fist album I bought of theirs and I played it till the cassette wore out. I will always love Judas Priest and am so grateful to Rob and the boys for making such great music.

I remember watching this historical Live Aid event way back when! A lot of distortions throughout this event from most of the bands playing! Living After Midnight is a staple in their set list which mostly leads into their most iconic song You’ve Got Another Thing Coming! If you happen to do this song please do the live version “Electric Eye DVD” where Rob is shirtless and full of energy (not the studio video please)! Great analysis Elizabeth and thank you! You made this Priest fan very happy!

Thank you sooo much for dissecting Rob Halford. I grew up on him with “Screaming for Vengeance”. There’s a reason he’s known as the metal god.
I was there at Live Aid in Philly that day. An amazing and memorable experience, for sure! Elizabeth, if you want to analyze a truly stellar rock vocalist, you really need to add Steve Perry from the band Journey to your portfolio. Specifically, you need to hear Steve performing “Mother, Father” in the video from a 1981 concert in Houston. It showcases his unfathomable vocal talent more than any other song or performance. Please, please, please fill this gaping hole in your portfolio!!!!

Yep, it was all written off as "just mindless screaming" at the time by it's detractors, and it felt like that opinion gained a toehold even amongst people who were neutral. Add in the satanic panic, and even less people wanted to stick their neck out with compliments or even study.

Halford is such an incredible showman, and arguably the most talented voice in Heavy Metal. I've only seen him past his prime, in 2005 and 2015, but he always knew how to put on a show. The band as well, they had a very particular attitude and heavyness that makes them stand out. Thanks for covering them again!
Seen Priest 20+ times, Rob can sing in so many styles and ranges its crazy!

One of the things about Rob Halford is that _he could do this all the time._ A number of heavy rock vocalists could get the range and the pitches and the distortion in the studio but it would all soon fall apart on stage. The distortion would wear their voices out and they would lose control. Read interviews with other vocalists and musicians from the metal boom of the Eighties and they are all in awe of The Metal God Halford. Only a few others like Queensryche's Geoff Tate and Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson were actually able to reliably sing the same parts in concert as on the record.
_Living After Midnight_ was the first song I learned to play on guitar way back then. Of course I got it substantially wrong. To this day I still love playing it (although by now I've improved somewhat).
Speaking of Melodyne, you might want to check out Journey with Steve Perry singing. He doesn't need it. His voice goes straight to the pitch and stays there, no Autotune needed. Which is a good thing because it hadn't been invented yet. It's pretty amazing.
Man, I thought all of us started with breaking the law (tbf, I'm bass not guitar). Such a simple yet iconic little riff in the same vein as smoke on the water. The sort of riff you can duh duh duh from your mouth and everyone will know it.
Great to go back to Judas Priest, back to a time when Rob Halford had hair. Rob Halford one of greatest rock/metal vocalists. This performance had a lot of feedback. I like the Live Vengeance 82 or US Festival 83 version more. Many great JP songs to explore - Diamonds and Rust, Beyond the Realms of Death, Desert Plains, The Green Manalishi, Freewheel Burning to name just some.

The US Festival was one of their worst - Rob's voice sounded strained like he was sick or had partially blown it out. Live Vengeance is killer.
Rob was absolutely on fire at Live Aid. His look, his sound were spot on ❤ This is easily my favorite version of Midnight, feedback and all
I saw JP at the beginning of 2023 and they are still amazing. Next year, maybe do a reaction to a song from one of Rob Halford's Christmas albums. 50 years in music, Halford and the band still going strong. A highlight, for me, was JP induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and at the end, the finale was Dolly Parton, with other inductees, Rob Halford singing "Jolene, please don't take my man." So incredible. He ended up on her latest album.
My all time favorite band, though truth be told, I’ve been burned out on this song for a long time now, but to watch you experience for the first time is really giving me a reignited appreciation. And yes, Rob he has this in the pocket so he can really perform with complete confidence.
Also, knowing that you are using your platform to further academic research into the voice, is just solid 10/10! That made me very happy to hear that. Go you! 🙂

I haven’t spotted Alice Cooper in the channel’s video list: “I’m Eighteen” would be a good choice, or “School’s Out”.
Joan Jett and the Black Hearts deserve a listen (their “Dirty Deeds” cover, “I Love Rock n Roll”, or her first band, the Runaways (“Cherry Bomb”).
Others: Billy Idol (“White Wedding, “Rebel Yell”, “Flesh for Fantasy” all good choices), Twisted Sister (“We’re Not Gonna Take It”), Cheap Trick (“Gonna Raise Hell”-so very different from their usual sound), Quiet Riot (“Bang Your Head”, Cum on Feel the Noize”).
So much goodness. You can’t help but have a rockin’ 2024!

You need to react to some of Priest's less mainstream songs such as Exciter and Beyond The Realms Of Death - Rob's voice is amazing on those tracks as well as many other of their heavier songs such as Riding On The Wind and the title track for Screaming For Vengeance. The concert versions of the latter two from the Live Vengeance video are totally awesome.
This is the first mainstream Priest song she's done! Give her a break.

About 16 minutes in you’ve got Rob Halford explaining how he used to work in a theatre and would watch the operas from the wings and absorb all the stagecraft and magic of it. He says Pavarotti is his absolute god of singing. Worth your while watching the whole programme:)
I recommend you listen to the studio version of, Run of the Mill. The only version of this song that I know of is lyrics only. I was impressed be his vocals in this song and it's one of my favorites from the earlier years of Judas Priest.
So far as live albums go, Unleashed in the East is superb to all.
I feel like he's just relaxing his vocal chords to the max and adding compression where you kinda squeeze out the top of your air. So effortless 😮

we saw JP at a small venue. they had small amps. we laughed at the size of the amps. it was truly the loudest concert i have ever seen. and when Rob hit the high notes and then vibrated his voice, i feared for my ears. i actually covered my ears; knowing that the Who had sent people to the hospital with ear damage.
Saw him at the hard rock in Vegas. Not a big place. He triggered the limiters on the PA several times. For the next 3 days, I couldn't hear a distinct sound. In a CASINO. LOL. it probably took about 3 weeks before it stopped sounding like I was underwater constantly.
I saw Metallica on City Island in Harrisburg, PA in the late 80's outside, The Cult on their Sonic Temple tour opened for them.
It was so loud, my ears rang for days 😂. I have legit mild hearing loss, probably from decades of metal shows. I regret nothing. 😎🤘
It was the last show on City Island too. After years of shows, that one was so loud half the city complained about it. 🤭 Party poopers.

Robs best singing performance
Priest was my band in high school and Unleashed in the East was my senior year soundtrack. That album hooked 100.000 volts to their past songs and made them new. I cannot recommend "Diamonds and Rust" from that album enough. I have heard all the versions and it and always will be my favorite. In fact I think every song from that album was better that the studio versions except maybe Victim of Changes.

I saw Judas Priest two years ago, and Rob Halford can STILL hit all the notes.
The Ripper, Diamonds and Rust, Deceiver and Sinner were all some of my favorite songs from Judas Priest who I saw open for UFO around 1980. Believe it or not Diamonds and Rust was their version of Joan Baez's classic!
Judas Priest is by far my favourite band of all time. They have such gripping melodies and harmonics.
I would love if you would put some or all of the following songs of theirs on your to-do list: "Breaking the Law" (their biggest hit worldwide; short but sweet, draws on punk rock i think), "You've Got Another Thing Coming" (iirc their biggest hit in America, fun pop-style metal), "The Sentinel" (fan-favourite speed metal song about a post-apocalyptic lone warrior, has some very cool storytelling vocals), "Turbo Lover" (lead single from the album Turbo 30; synth metal with really driving rhythm and subdued, romantic vocals), any song from the album Stained Class but particularly "Exciter" because Halford has a really lovely ringing clearness in his vocals throughout that whole album, and I have to recommend any if not all of their great power ballads: "Fever", "Prisoner of Your Eyes", "Touch of Evil", etc.
Screaming and Stained Class are my favorite albums, followed closely by Defenders and Turbo, but you can't go wrong with the tune "Blood Red Skies" from Ram It Down either.
I can only imagine how awful all the feedback squealing was in your headphones. Thank you for going through this performance in spite of it.
I am one of those people who is sensitive to high pitched sounds. It makes me thankful that I listened to this through a speaker through my phone rather than headphones or earbuds

I long considered Halford to be the greatest metal singer there was, but over the last few years I've upgraded my appraisal of him to being the greatest vocalist of all time. In fact, I discovered this channel looking for a professional's take on "Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver" and I've been coming back ever since. For something maybe more operatic, try "Freewheel Burning". It was the first Judas Priest song I ever heard and it's the first one I think about when I think about Rob's singing.
To me, this and 'Breaking the Law' are some of their best songs.
