- CHARACTER STUDY - EPISODE 1 - Captain Olimar
In which we compare Nintendo's 3-inch-tall astronaut to one of the most depressing characters in American literary canon. Analysis focuses on Pikmin, Pikmin 2, and Pikmin 3.
Like Olimar himself, this video is what you could call a small pilot :P I hope I can improve my craft and turn Character Study into a full blown series that people will enjoy discussing. Keep in mind that I don't think this interpretation of Olimar is fully intended by Nintendo, only that it is a potentially interesting lens through which to view him and his situation. Hope you like it :)

To quote Schrafillas: "Every other Nintendo protagonist is some kind of perfect hero, but Olimar is literally just an amazon delivery guy and I love it."
Things I learned today:
>Olimar's japanese name is an anagram of Mario
>Olimar is a representation of the overworked japanese salaryman which was in turn inspired on the american salesmen lifestyle.
Great job Comic
I just want to say how proud I am of this guy. Honestly, much of my success I owe to him. He helped me grow my channel in ways I did not expect, and many who know him mainly know him through me. I hope this is the first true step for Jon to make the ComicFoil a true standalone name.
Keep it up, dude! You're doing awesome things.
A really interesting detail in Pikmin 4 that might actually add to or slightly alter your perception of how Olimar sees his job. This detail is a treasure hoard entry. In it he states that when he told his parents what his occupational aspirations were, they were very disappointed with his choice. And he still lives with the pain from their expressions to this day, but he doesn't regret his choice in career. From miscellaneous other entries, we can gather that Olimar does not like the driving aspect of the job, but loves being able to explore planets and worlds that he has never been able to see before during his deliveries. He also talks about how fascinated he has always been with the natural world, even from a young age; a trait that he is excited that his son may be developing. With all of this information, it seems clear that while the job wasn't ideal, it was chosen intentionally because it at least gave him a taste of what he wanted to do with his life, while still providing the money that his family would need back home. And it makes it clear that being an explorer was his dream job even though he never knew it or never thought he could make money as one.
Wow, I never thought I'd hear the about "Death of a Salesman" outside of my high school English class. This was a great study both into Olimar's character design and the cultural influences that brought it to life. I can't wait to see more from this series, although that ending pun made me groan (in a good way, of course). Who knows, maybe next you'll be able to make a convincing argument that Professor Layton's puzzle addiction is a reference to Sherlock Holmes' drug problems, haha.
Nintendo Nerd Haha, thanks friend! I don’t know about drugs, but a Layton video comparing him to Holmes would probably be really interesting.
13:19 It is stated in the manual that Olimar was sipping tea at that moment along with the S.S. Dolphin's detectors malfunctioning.
BEAUTIFUL pikmin content. Thank you. The montage with the monologue edited over olimar looking over the planet hit hard.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
I can't wait to see the Mega Man and Sly Cooper character studies.
19:54 is a really good speech
I will note that selling the ship aside Olimars boss actually seems far more caring towards his employees than most fictional and even real ones given that he gives Olimar vacation time in the first game (He was on it when he got lost), forgives not-luigi for loosing a shipment so valuble that the loss basically bankrupted the company, and even left alongside Olimar post game to help get his missing employ back, putting himself at great personal risk in the process, even if he also wanted more treasure he didn't need to participate personally. Than again also doesn't seem to be running that big of business with Olimar probably being the only reliable employee he's got, and some of his behavior in the start of the second game can be explained by being under threat from loansharks, he even lets Olimar use the company ship in the third game.... though to be honest the fact that Hoctotate has blatant loansharks able to operate close enough to a legitimate bank that someone can accidently walk into the wrong one is concerning in of itself. Heh Hoctations from earlier games are supposedly greedy and the koppi civ from the third is gluttonus... we just need 5 more civs and well have all 7 sins.
Well, there's Pikmin 4 now
I've actually never read "Death of a Salesman" before, so I learned a lot from this video and found it a really cool analysis and comparison between Olimar and the main character of DoaS. Would absolutely love to see more videos like this one!
This was great. I've always enjoyed literary analyses of pop culture that I enjoy, and I've always felt that the stories in the Pikmin trilogy were really underrated, and Olimar's character arc is the prime reason why. Similarly, I'm anxious to see what you might have to say about Sora; I think a lot of Kingdom Hearts fans, long-time and casual alike, tend to forget about Sora's gradual growth as a person across that series, and it deserves to be addressed.
Keep up the good work!
Considering that I never watched anything related to Pikmin, I'm extremely impressed. I think that this could be something you do for a long time. It could be a whole series, and if you were to just make this, I think you'd be very successful. Going into detail with Olimar in a series I thought didn't really give much thought into his character was interesting. I was shocked you were able to make a comparison to Death of a Salesman. Keep it up, Jon. I think you have the potential to go far with this.
I discovered something.
Want more evidence of the disparaging treatment of the employees of Hocotate Freight? In Pikmin 2, the Hocotate Ship seen at the beginning has 2 identical seats for Louie and Olimar, normal right?
Well, the GOLDEN version has a normal cockpit for Olimar, but the President has a SOFA AND A TV.
This video ACTUALLY made me cry. Fucking bravo
Nice! Love to hear it, thank you :)
I never understand why people always portray Olimar as a selfish and bad character without paying attention to the games context that you pointed out in the video (Luigifan0001 being an example making Olimar as a jerk as well as most super smash brothers machinima shows mainly smash fighter and dorkly/ college humor)
I love this, literary analysis of games is something I wish was more common, it’s so interesting to me.
I love character studies so much! I used to do this all the time with my sister. These are always going to be definite watches for me. I remember hearing about "Death of a Salesman" back in my English class in high school, but we never focused on it, so it was nice to hear the story of it and the comparison to Olimar. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see this series grow from the starting leaf sprouts of a pikmin to a blossoming flower.
There are some interesting parallels that are drawn here between these two stories. There's a lot of potential with this analysis type of video so keep it up.
6:47 Okay, how did I forget that the president looks like a monster from Croc? Those eyes...
Loved this video. Hope you make more.
This turned out really well, I'd say! You did some _stellar_ work on it!
This is an excellent video Comic. I find character studies fascinating and it is a lot of fun to research to topics that you may not noticed in a character face value. I haven't read Death of a Salesman nor watched the play or the film but from the video I'm curious in reading it.
Incredible and insightful video :D Im so excited for more content like this!
Also seeing couch comic flying through space was hilarious lol
Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed this analysis, and I can't wait to see more! I was looking at the character selection early in the video and speculating who could be next ^^
i loved this so much! an absolutely passion-filled analysis on a character who i don't think i'd appreciate as much without this video. i'm so excited to see what other connections or thoughts you have on various other characters, because much like you, a story's cast is always what drags me in. this is even better than i imagined when you were talking about wanting to do this...i'm just so excited for more!! keep it up man you killed it
Great insight. Just pointing out, if you pay attention to Pikmin 2, Olimar's children are still juveniles. They're not adults. His daughter wrote to him how his wife threatened to take their pet dog away and how she is being strict with her studies and his son even begged him to bring him along on Olimar's next expedition in a typical childish manner. Also in the art, the children are wearing typical children style clothing (e.g. the daughter is wearing an animal onesie).
Yeah, that’s another major difference; Olimar’s children are still young whereas Willy Loman’s have grown into adulthood.
@@comicfoil9494 You seem unsure at 6:29 in the diagram with "parent of two middle aged?". I also thought you made an assertion somewhere (apparently you didn't).
@@qwmx Oh, I see where the confusion is. And to be honest, this is my fault, I didn’t make this very clear. What I mean by that ‘’ middle-aged?” Is that Olimar, being a father of two, is probably himself middle-aged, but we can’t say for sure, thus the question mark.
@@comicfoil9494 Thank you for being understanding and humble 🙂. I can enjoy your video so much better now that I know you know this. Seeing incorrect information is annoying (not OCD related, I can tell because it's not a mind invading obsession, also I've always been like that about incorrect information since I was a kid before developing OCD). Not saying your video had incorrect information, I thought it did and it annoyed me.
@@qwmx Thanks! I totally understand, this kind of thing would bug me too in other people's works. And with how much writing and research goes into these, I know I'm bound to make mistakes here and there. In this case, it wasn't incorrect information and more unclear delivery, but if I could I'd fix that. Glad you're enjoying the video.
I love it and I liked that you combined both real life and literature of the death of a salary man I want to see what you have for the next character
This was incredibly well done! It has all the same charm I love of out of Oscar's countdowns (which, of course, are yours too in a way)
I can't think of any genuine criticism* and while you said it was rough around the edges, I dont see it. I can't wait for the next ones, whether they be making me like a character I don't know well or even dislike, or further depending my appreciation for present favourites, I can't wait to see where this series goes.
*I don't like the intro much at all but that's purely a matter of personal taste and I can't really give a reason. It's like getting the best car ever but you don't like the bumper sticker. It's just not worth bitching about.
God damn this is well done!
Hey comic I'm a guy who hasn't even seen anyone of your other videos but I can tell you now I'm instantly in love with this series and I will always be here to comment and say thank you for this dude it's wonderful subscription deserved you've got a fan in me now I just gotta see the videos from the past which will take a while but I am gonna do it
Rei DelValle Well thank you! This here was my first Character Study, so you won’t find much else like it on the channel. But I’ve got a ton of Let’s Plays, and you might want to check out my Stream of Jonciousness videos, they’re sort of similar. Thanks for subscribing!
Well, this has promise and you know what you are talking about. Keep it up, in about a year (with proper video uploads and some help) you can make a great series. Just don't give up and you'll be surprised where you end up with this series.
14:30 FIFTY hours?
Do they not realise there's a point where overworking someone is going to produce worse work due to being exhausted all the time?
This is why Palace #5 in Persona 5 was a thing.
Damn that was really good
Thanks :D
I'm sad this video doesn't have more views I love it
That means a lot, thank you. I’m hoping if I can get a few more of these Character Studies out, maybe I can get some traffic to my channel finally. Thank you for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Hey. Pikmin would be a Q&A series. There's a recommendation. It's fairly easy going.
*Edit* I'm not trying to detract from the character study. I quite enjoyed it. I'm only saying Pikmin popped into my head due to this video
I wouldn't say the president isn't that lazy or uncaring, since when he finds out louie went missing, he straight up said "fuck it, I'm going" without any hesitation, very much knowing this planet could mean an untimely end for him, although it could be because of money, him atleast deciding to go is fair enough
(He also has the best whistle, and no one can change my mind)
I’m gonna check out Death of a Salesman
If you’re big on plays, it’s pretty influential. I like Arthur Miller a lot. I know it everyone can enjoy reading plays like I do though, and to be fair these weren’t written to be read, they were written to be seen. So if you can, find a production of it, either live or recorded, or a movie. The film I used a lot for this video is free to watch on UA-cam.
If U Had To Pick 3 FE Lords From Each Game In The Series That U Would Do A Character Study, Which Ones Would It Be?
Bardock SkyWalker Well there’s a few Fire Emblem characters that would be worth talking about, but there’s one in particular that would probably be the first to get their own episode. You can actually see them if you look closely during the “Character Select” segment.
@@comicfoil9494 Character Select Segment?
Olimar should quit his freight job and get a spot in hocotates scientific field
Also it's pronounced ho-co-ta-te not ho-co-tate. Every syllable gets pronounced in the Japanese language.
