My stylist ALWAYS thins out my hair because it is so thick and heavy and I like how light it feels after but in the long run its very frizzy and gets tangled even tho it's a short cut. I just did a big chop and now I'm gonna have to wait a year to cut it again and this time without texturing it :(

Lmao yes!! I can't tell whether the stylists stare at me and my hair because they love it, or because they never see my type of hair. I don't like all the staring. The worst is when they blow dry it and I look like cousin it and everyone in the salon is staring. Hence why I never go

I would love to have someone like you, who gets curly hair, to give me a proper cut! I feel like us curly girls get screwed over on so many fronts. One rant...when straight haired girls “review” curly products and bash them...I still blame straight hair girls doing this for some of my favorite products getting discontinued. If you have straight hair, please don’t use curly products and expect them to make your hair curly and if you do, please don’t leave negative “reviews”on those products...they aren’t for you!

Just got a haircut and I'm so mad. I told my stylist to cut no more than two inches off and to re-layer my hair. Unfortunately, she got "scissor-happy" and cut off more than two inches. She didn't think it was a big deal because, when my hair is wet, an extra half-inch or inch doesn't seem that drastic. Dry is a different story. I think she was shocked at how much my curls shrunk up. What's worse is that she cut the top layers of my hair too short and now they're barely holding a curl. I keep having to tell myself not to worry and that it'll grow back :(

The next appointment to get it fixed at a quidad stylist is in 3 weeks. Im so upset and sad. Im depressed looking at my hair in the mirror and get reminded everyday. Ugh. Never again! just try to do a straight cut no layers or anything to start, if you're curly it won't be very obvious since curly hair is all over the place anyway. That's how I started, and now I cut my sisters' and mother's hair too.

I was already so self conscious then and too scared to voice my opinion, that I let her just cut it one length. Never again! I love my curls and needed the volume. Not only that, you stay informed so that you can serve a broad clientele because you recognize that everyone is unique and have different hair care needs. This is awesome and I hope you become a leading influencer in the hair beauty industry.
I wish that more stylists had your attitude and passion, but it seems like they really don't belong in this industry because they are not willing to do what it takes to give their clients a fabulous hair-do, and I am so sick of going from one stylist to the next who claims they can do better but end up being a great disappointment. I really can't understand why there are just so many bull$@1%ers faking their styling capabilities.

THANK YOU. I am about to turn 47, been having my haircut in a salon since 1982. I cannot tell you how many times it took for me to cry my eyes out over the years because people kept using thinning shears on my hair. It took me years to to stand up to stylists that wanted to do this and almost every single one has tried. I’ve only had probably three ACTUALLY good haircuts in my life. I’m getting older now, been married 20 years, two kids, and have been cutting it myself since 2017. It’s a wreck right now! I had rainbow hair during the pandemic, all done by myself and looked awesome! It was all to cover the incoming gray. Now, I’m removing all the color, bleaching my white bride of Frankenstein stripes growing in naturally, toning and cutting to freshen up and HOPEFULLY allow me to easily transition into the gray. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ This is a big expectation from myself here, lol. I am going to use your ponytail cut method because it’s the closest I’ve seen to the layering I need and I need a LOT chopped to get rid of what’s damaged so, I’m kind of terrified. There aren’t many “curly older women self haircut” videos, actually, can’t find any to my specifics, lol, so I have to patchwork from so many sources. Ugh, this comment has gotten so out of hand, my apologies! I am waiting for the mail truck because I had to order my toner online and I am so ready to get this done and over with!
Thanks for all these videos! They are such a huge help to SO many people in ways you can’t even imagine! Wish me luck! 🍀🤞😂
🙏omg please don’t let me turn out like a silver clown 🤡 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have been doing it myself for many years now and I have no clue what I’m doing either, but I know I’m not going to get scissor happy like many stylists do, so I trust myself more at this point. I HATE THINNING SHEARS!!!!!!
I think 99 out of 100 hairstylists say they can't cut my hair without using them. Or short layers. My hair is NOT curlier cut short. I get the blank look. "Of course I can cut wavey/curly hair but I have to do it. Trust me". I have been so traumatized by hairstylists that I've worn a ponytail as my ONLY hairstyle for the majority of my adult life. I'm tired of it. I think I can cut my own hair better. I'm about to find out (my hair grows too fast to keep it short). It doesn't matter if I'm getting a $20 or $200 haircut. I have very very rarely seen a style with my curl pattern to bring in a picture. I want my own style anyway - not someone else's.

No questions, she cut it to chin length (my curly hair dry was hip length) then she put in some stiffening moose on my short, one-length hair and let me walk out with it still wet. When it fully dried in the Caribbean sun, my hair was mid ear length super frizzy and looked very damaged. I couldn't tie it or clip it up which was against my school rules. .-. YES! Communication. Communication. Communication! That is the Key! I've had the same hair stylist for 14 plus years and she used to use the thinning shears on my hair, But only because that's what she was taught to do. When I went CGM I went in and talked with her and said "Hey Gurl! I'm doing this new thing called the Curly Girl Method and everything I've read says no thinning and...blah blah blah blah blah." You know what happened? She Listened. She said "Okay! Let's do this thing!" We're growing out my asymmetrical pixie cut I've had for Several Years and going for an asymmetrical collarbone length bob. I think that's about as long as I can take it. She's Great, and thinks I'm funny and edgy. I used to let her dye my grey spot blue. Now I henna it myself but she's ready for me to go all grey so she can dye All of my hair blue! LOL! But we get along because we communicate as partners. Because face it, it IS a partnership. If you treat people how you want to be treated and communicate with them, they'll reciprocate and then everybody wins. 👍😁

I asked my hairstylist to bring out my natural wavy texture because the length and weight of it was flattening it out. I definitely lost my waves and now it's just a big nest of frizz sitting on top of my head. Now my question is, how do you style overly thinned out wavy hair?

  • @therealjoebobsicle

I cut my own. I don’t want layers. I listened to advice about needing layers since I have curls for 20 years. I finally gave myself a blunt cut, grew it out and I’ve never been happier than the last four years. Even when I mess it up, I can’t get mad because I did it. For free. I’d say my haircuts get better all the time and I’m learning a lot. When you have curly hair and you make a mistake, it’s easy to disguise the mistakes anyway. I sure don’t miss messy ole layers!

    • @ocandro
      @ocandro 5 років тому +3

The Real Joe Bobsicle I thought I was the only person, who doesn't want layers! I do like a good(!) layering, if someone has thick and/or coarse hair, it really gives them more volume and lightness.
I have 2c/3a, newborn fine and thin hair and it would only make my ends transparent and limp and it's already weightless, I can easily lift it with my hands. My roots are pretty straight because of this, but I honestly never thought of it as a bad thing, until I've read and heard tons of comments from people who are desperate to make their roots curl. I always thought it looks very cool and retro, especially with a blunt cut. When you look at classic movie star hairstyles from 1920s-60s (or even in some older, antique styles), more often than not, they get more curly towards the ends but I guess it's only my association. ..

ocandro my hair is baby fine too... and I have a tonne of it. I have a lot of curl at the root everywhere except the crown (right where I’d most want curl at the root... figures) but I make it work. If I see people with layered haircuts and the ends are all neglected and flying away, I judge them....lol... seriously I see some nice layers now and again but not for me.

@Manes by Mell I did the research. Followed them for a while on FB. Viewed all of the pics and read all of the reviews. I felt so confident going into this salon and getting my first haircut, by a curly professional, after a year of lockdown. We discussed products and how I style my hair. She had a mane full of thick, THICK, curly hair so I felt at ease. I asked her for layers on top, and to please give me some bangs ( I HATE my forehead). No worries, she said....I'm going to do what is called the Ouidad haircut. She explained the product she was using (she's an ambassador for Oudiad) and how to apply. Everything was going great, until she finished cutting. First, there was hardly any hair on the floor. Secondly, she forgot about the bangs, and after slightly drying my hair with the diffuser, I could see no difference from when I walked in. I tried to hide my disappointment as I walked to the counter to pay for her service. She charged me $150 "due to the length of my hair" (slightly below my shoulders). I quietly paid and fought the tears as I drove home. Needless to say, I won't be returning. I would love nothing more than to book an appointment with you, and fly my happy ass all the way to Canada.

I don't like bangs on curly heads. It makes the layers look too severe. This is why I don't get my hair cut by so-called curly hair experts. I just cut it myself. And I agree with Mel...the best way to cut curly hair is either semi-wet or dry, half styled, and then literally cut curl by curl.

One of the worst cuts I ever had was also one of the most expensive. I was a student and it was the early 00s. Stylist broke out the straighteners. I didn't even own straighteners. The hairdresser I trust now actually works for one of the low-cost walk-in salons in my relatively small town. She keeps my hair as dry as possible and listens to me when I say 'no layers'. Is it as good as a Diva cut? No, probably not. But it's nice enough and readily accessible in my town, and that works for me.

I think an additional warning for the straightener part, is that if the stylist fully combs out all of the curls.
Now what do I do after paying for a cut that came out wonky - and I couldn't have it fixed right away because I left the salon with wet hair. Do I go back to a stylist I don't exactly trust or do never go back to the salon again even though I get my nails done there?😅

I went to a salon in Jan 2018 and asked for a trim in layers to compliment my 2a waves and she cut it all one length. it was mid back and she cut it to shoulder.
I grew it out and in June I went to a new salon and said the same thing this time with more photos and she texturized the ends
I went to a different place in July and asked her to fix the texture issue because it looked disgusting and finally got layers that compliment my 2a waves. Sometimes you gotta go through your duds to find your goddess

Thanks, Mel for your thorough explanation on how to select and get a trim vs a cut and a diva cut and a wet cut for our curly hair. I so wish youtube and you were around during the 70, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. I haven't been able to get a decent hair cut/trim for over 10 years. I've somehow managed to trim my own hair with disastrous trims. First, I've always had difficulty finding someone who knew how to cut curly hair. Second, the only 4 I found since I was a teenager (now in my 50s) I had moved away then the last one had died in a car accident. Prior to the one that tragically died, another one would always want to give me a haircut that she knew I couldn't manage when I had it short. Another one purposely ruined my haircut. During these past 10 years, I haven't been able to find anyone I can trust and that is affordable. When you're living on a fixed income paying $50.00 or more on a cut is out of the question. Now I'm dealing with neck and back injuries which makes it difficult to get my hair washed at the salon. I spoke to someone who recently did my sister's hair and told her my hair is coily curly over the telephone and not like my sister that has loose curls. She mentioned it would cost $50 without washing and without blowdrying and without seeing my hair up front. Is that a reasonable rate? My lifestyle is low-maintenance, shoulder-length hair which I leave curly in the Spring until the end of Summer (Sept). The rest of the year (Fall/Winter and Late Spring) I always blow out my hair. My hair is similar to yours but is now shedding excessively I guess due to age/lack of hormones. I would love to hear your opinion on this matter and what would you suggest?

I've been watching your channel for the last two days before/after work because your videos are so informative and helpful and I cannot get enough! I can't wait for wash day to try out the things I have learned from you. My question though is, I am a dog groomer and I work with splashing water and blow dryers when drying dogs, along with a low grade humid environment in the bathing room, using clippers and shears on a moving animal which calls for usually putting my hair in an up do (especially with having past mid back hair length). I can go around 4-5 at most of not having to wash my hair but the frizz and tangles get unruly, I use a satin bonnet at night to sleep in, and refreshing is nonexistent because of the frizz and tangles that my hair develop because of my job. So my question is, what would you recommend for someone like me to maintain my wash day with the obstacles I endure with my work environment? Should I shower more often even though my hair doesn't feel like I need it but it's more so to get rid of the frizz and tangles? I've become so hopeless over time, I need guidance with my particular situation! 😭

I was going in to get a bad cut fixed, and she broke out thinning shears without asking me or informing me. Before I knew what was even happening she starting thinning my hair. After about two chops with the thinning shears I asked her what she was doing. That’s when she informed me she was thinning my hair. My heart dropped. My mother (who has extremely curly hair) has told me from a young age to never thin my hair. Well now I’m trying to grow out my thinned hair. But while doing that I have no idea how to style it or do anything with it. My curls have lost a lot of their natural curl pattern and just don’t look good. Do you have any advice?

I have mostly 2c Botticelli on the crown with looser 2b underneath that doesn’t start to spiral until mid-ears-a really irregular curl pattern-if the clumps are separated they get cut in the wrong places and won’t curl afterward. They always, always finger comb all the curl out first before cutting. So I leave with pine tree layers that wing out instead of turning in. Curl pattern completely destroyed. I don’t know what to ask for to get a good result either.

For example even the least experienced "devacurl" stylist charges $80 at a nearby salon, with prices going up to $140 for more experienced stylists. In a non-branded salon, I pay $60 before tip for a curly hair cut by an expert stylist. Also, why do you call a dry cut a deva curl cut? is the technique trademarked by deva curl or something? I’m so sorry that happened to you :( my hair is down to my butt too so I would be so unhappy if that happens to me. But could you maybe not say you were “depressed” because of it and that you have ptsd? Those are serious mental illnesses which I think shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you actually do have ptsd or depression, I apologize. I don’t mean to be rude about this, I just see a lot of comments using mental illnesses very lightly. I hope you’re not offended by my request :(

      How does that even happen

    • @fenn__fenn

@@NP-xv6kp people can get ptsd by a multitude of events. Someone who treasures their long hair could absolutely be traumatized and depressed if it’s suddenly all gone. I think it’s a bit insensitive to insinuate someone can’t have ptsd over something you don’t think is serious enough, or meaningful enough to be traumatic.

I really did how this lady cut my hair but I don’t like how she did process tho. She literally brushed my hair dry with a brush creating frizz on my hair

The last girl brushed my curls out right off the bat. I had asked for an inverted bob and some color. The color turned out great but she cut my hair in an 80s bob. I mean a straight across bod flaring out and everything. This is why I have always cut my own hair. I went home and layered the back of my hair and inverted it myself. There were red flags and I did not stop the process as I should have.

The hair stylists in my city have no idea what to do with curly hair. They always make my hair look very frizzy and dry like a lions mane... I don't really know what to do, I thought of cutting my hair for myself but I'm scared of messing it up

I think I’ve been getting my hair cut wrong this whole time, I only wear it natural, I rarely even use styling products and it’s always cut wet or flat ironed and I really hate when they flat iron it because I don’t use heat on my hair really ever. My cuts never look great :(
