    Something I wanted to add regarding VOLUME/HEIGHT, my hair naturally falls throughout the day and does this WITH and WITHOUT layers. However, when my hair is not layered it still maintains an overall look of fullness which is not true for when my hair is layered.
    Hope ya'll enjoy this video! Let me know if you have any questions and/or future video requests!

      I think this has been my problem. On my way to my old stylist prepandemic. I was on my way to fixing my hair then I went to a new stylist that just cut a ton of layers back in. Needless to say my hair was back to looking like a scraggly mess.

    I totally agree. I have very fine, low density hair. I got a specialized curly cut last year with lots of layers. It definitely showcased my curliest under-layers. I think it looked good for a brief time. However, I had serious gaps show, and the thinness has really shown as it has grown out. I have had to accept that no magical cut is going to miraculously change my hair. I am working to accept and enjoy what I have to work with... Thanks for the video! 💛

    I have 3c/4a curly hair. Mostly 3c. And, I am with you girl lol. My hair is waist-length when straightened, and shoulder-length in its curly state. I like my hair to be long, and layers gives much more volume than I want. Also, it's hard for it to even out if you get them cut too short. Plus, you never know what it'll look like straightened, at least in my case.

    This makes a ton of sense, thank you! When I first started CGM a few years ago the back of my hair was super full and curly and now, several deva cuts later, it definitely needs some help. I just thought I needed more *frequent* layering but now I will definitely be trying it your way to see if I can get this back to my pre-layered look.

    What you’re discussing- loss of fullness and stringy ends, etc is exactly what I’m struggling with. The picture of the back of your hair with layers is what mine looks like currently. Going to work on getting the bottom 3/4 of my hair the same length root to tip!

    What you're talking about is just different styles. I love your shorter curly cut on you, but if you want more fullness at the bottom without the dreaded triangle head, look at ling curly shag styles. My hair is too thick to go without layers and hurts my head if it gets too heavy, so I had to learn to cut my hair this year. Matt, a professional stylist and trainer at Free Salon Education on UA-cam, has saved me. His online tutorials are the best! I personalized the curly shag cut to suit my longer, side part style and to be honest, my hair looks great. Now if I could only learn to color it! (Not messing with color; curly hair is too temperamental!)
    Also remember weather, health, and hormones mess with your hair. My curls are usually perfect just using Curl Keeper Original and their Flexy Brush to create and hold the curls, but then the weather changes and I need to add mousse or gel, or more or less leave in conditioner. Our hair is ever changing, just like us! ❤

      I’ve had shag styles and long layers. They don’t work for me and aren’t what I’m talking about here. This would more resemble a blunt cut with the very top layer of hair having slight elevation from the rest and then face framing which creates the shape. Those of us who don’t have thick hair and or higher density can’t spare the density to create the long layers and/or short layers while maintaining fullness.
      Also I personally am team triangle. My all time favorite style on me is a rounded triangle. :) loving reminder that while it not be what you want or need, doesn’t make it bad ❤️

  • @esharp86
    @esharp86 3 роки тому +74

    I went into my first Deva cut instinctively knowing this about my hair. I told the stylist layers have always looked awful on me, my hair is fine, and very different day to day. Sometimes parts that were ringlets last wash are straight next time. It’s just hard to guess what it’s gonna do any given day. I told her in the past layers have caused my top layers to curl a lot more than the bottom layer so even a subtle layer will give the appearance of two totally separate hair cuts. Like the top layer curls up shorter and curlier, the bottom gets straighter and looks longer so it’s like I’m wearing a curly wig on top. Just awful. She assured me no no I’m an expert it won’t look like that when I do it blah blah blah. I trusted her. I shouldn’t have. Why won’t stylists listen to people about their own hair? I practically begged her to listen and please not add layers especially short layers on top. I have parts on top that are literally 4 inches long root to top while the majority of my hair is more like 12-14 inches. Huuuuuuuge layers. Gonna take years and years to grow them out. So heartbreaking and frustrating.

    • @JannelleOShaughnessy
      @JannelleOShaughnessy  3 роки тому +11

      I’m so sorry. It’s so frustrating not to be listened to. Stylists are experts in some aspects but they are not experts on individual hair and needs. It’s been one of the most exhausting things for me too, I started wearing my hair curly when I was 16 and NO ONE knew how to do curly hair, I literally had to create a specific cut for myself which was dry, finger detangled and is typically go in on like day 3 or 4 so my hair would lay fairly flat, I’d have then literally JUST dust the ends and then I’d go. And even still they sometimes would try and get creative and it was exhausting.

Thankfully , curly hair does camouflage a bit and it’s not as “bad” but I’m not happy with it. I know it will take years as well to grow it all out 😫 , then again , there’s nothing we can do now. oh, glad I read this, thanks! I just found the vid and haven't watched it yet, but struggling with what to do about layers. I just did a chop of about 6 inches (yikes) to get rid of some really stupid looking layers. The plan was to even it out ahead of growing out the length again. It's now between jaw and shoulder length and I'm so surprised how much I'm liking it, having been a longer hair person.
      I learned I was actually curly/wavy after a lifetime of thinking I had straight, frizzy and yes, triangle hair. I'm excited to read your experience of giving up the layers and just not brushing out lol seems so simple, but it's taken me years LOL
      PS the thing I hate about layers is that good ones seem hard to re-create. They may be nice (or not) and grow out, and then it's gamble whether the new layers cut in will be as nice. No layers would make life so much easier!

I got more compliments on my bob job, than I ever got from the pros. I did finally go to a stylist (not curly specialist) and she agreed that a bob is best for my hair. She's the first stylist that has said that to me. Today I was starting to doubt myself and wondering if I should get layers again, and I was saved from that mistake by hearing you. At first, layers were great for me, but now that I’ve had it a few times, I totally see what you mean by loosing density and thinning in areas where you wouldn’t. My problem is my front pieces are heavy (I have wavy hair and like to keep it long) so would a blunt cut with face framing be possible in a haircut? I’ve been thinking this with my upcoming appt. I’ve also had some shedding due to seasonal changes and stress so I’d like to make density a priority.

    • @JannelleOShaughnessy
      @JannelleOShaughnessy  3 роки тому +3

      Totally possible! It’s no different then having a more blunt cut with bangs in a way. They pull the hair to create the bangs from a different place that doesn’t really affect the look or density. I would make sure they are just adding face framing to the pieces essentially at the top of your head and not to the hairs around your ears etc because those hairs contribute to the overall look of density!

Not every technique works on every curl pattern. You do not need to thin out my thick beautiful hair. It does not look heavy. This is what gives me volume. You thin it out and instantly my head turning curls are now deflated.
    Ladies please do not be afraid to stand up for yourself. Remember that YOU are paying them and YOU have to live with the cut. YOU know what rocks on you❗😘

    I absolutely needed this video today! I have baby fine hair that is a mixture of waves and curls. Despite regular trims, the ends start looking wispy and stick out...because of the layers! They also grow out like shit making me look like a mullety Christmas tree after a month or so. Looks like it's hair in a bunville until it grows out enough to chop it to a more suitable nearly one length!

  • @Xana_K

    Omg same! Layers are the worst for me. I have such fine hair that I need a blunt cut for fullness otherwise it won't grow past my chin. It breaks off far too easily and looks really thin and scraggy. Not attractive at all.
    Once I stopped having layers and just kept trying to grow it all one length it looks so much better!
    Whoever said layers are for fine haired girls are nuts. It looks horrible. Only useful if you want something really short like above the jaw.

    I have a cowlick at the back of my head just as you described. I asked my stylist to cut shorter layers back there as I thought it would help hide the cowlick. She explained that no, shorter layers would actually make the splitting worse...so happy she didn’t listen to me!

    • @JannelleOShaughnessy
      @JannelleOShaughnessy  3 роки тому +5

      I’m glad too!!! I’ve tried it twice with shorter layers and both times it made it worse. Whereas if I let my hair grow longer so my top layer is touching my shoulders that weight eventually hides the cowlick.

    I think that might be my problem. I hate the way the back of my hair looks. My ends look scraggly, like that pic of yours. I thought it was damaged. What you say makes perfect sense now, thanks!

    OMG you may have just saved me from wrecking my hair! I was thinking I need to get more layers put in so that the weight doesn’t loosen my curl pattern...my hair used to be so nice and dense but it’s probably medium density now. Usually around day 2-3 the clumps get bigger/more hairs team up so I get pretty cute ringlets in the bottom 3rd (ish) of my hair. I was thinking to get it shorter and a better shape via layers...reconsidering that now. Sigh. Idk what to do with it now! Maybe keep my few non-dramatic layers, get some length off, and some face framing? Blah. Jannelle thank you so much for this insight!

    This is so interesting. Due to lockdowns I haven't been able to get my normal cut so all of my layers are growing out. I have super fine, low density hair and as its growing out I am definitely loosing volume but what you sat about density makes so much sense

    I went to my stylist in October wanting layers because that was what in my mind would make my fine, low density 2c/3a curls appear thicker.
    He told me the exact things you talked about in this video and gave me just one layer like yours. My hair is pretty much the same length, it's just a little shorter at the top layer and that's the only layer I have in my hair.
    It's March and it's time for another haircut. I think I'll keep my hair this way (I also want to grow it out), I'll just ask for some face-framing pieces at the front.
    What you said makes so much sense! And also, he taught me how to clip my hair for more height without losing density

    Love this! I have a ton of hair, but I’ve realized that layers screw up my hair! My curl pattern is looser and the weight of my hair on top doesn’t work when they put all the layers on the bottom. It goes all over the place and turns into a hot mess. My hair is easier when I have no layers, but then it lacks style. I need to try just light layers in the top third. Thank you thank you thank you!

Next time, I'll just get face framing layers with a straight cut in the back. Also maybe a nice fringe tool Thanks a lot for sharing. It was quite helpful. God bless. (:

I’m still in the process of growing my hair so right now it’s just a mess and my hairstylist friend keeps telling me that I need to get a lot of layers and I keep trying to tell her that I don’t have enough hair for that. I can’t afford to spare that hair in the bottom layers!

  • @krishlayne3189
    @krishlayne3189 3 роки тому +4

    Exactly the same for me. I finally bobbed mine to start over again. As you can see by my photo I was styling my hair so tended to cut for styling and this included more layering. Now that I’m leaving it curly I need blunt lines for a denser look, extremely minimal layering if any, and I also clip my roots in areas that tend to not have fullness. The difference is remarkable. Now I’m only coloring my hair, and I tend to need recovery time after that. I’m a hairstylist and it still took me time to commit to my hair/curls and what they needed. It’s really nice to see my experience is shared!

    this is especially bad if your stylist relies on thinning shears to make layers. it removes all the weight from the ends of the clumps and they won't form curl clumps anymore, and obviously takes out the volume, since that's what they are designed to do.

  • @laurenking5080
    @laurenking5080 3 роки тому +3

    We have very similar hair, and my layers always end up essentially looking like a mullet...short up top, and long in the back, tapering out to a V. I've asked my stylist to cut the back shorter to compensate, but I never really felt like I got what I asked for. This could explain why. I've been thinking of going to get slightly angled bob to bring the bottom layers closer to the top layers so I don't have as much waiting for it all to grow out. This video seals my decision. Now, any idea what to do when you lose hair at the temples due to stress and you get tufty bits that make you look like an owl??

    I have fine curly hair and I can totally relate. I just hate how my hairdresser cut my long gorgeously grown hair short into layers twice just because my hair is curly. Both times I just wanted a hair trim so that my hair continues to grow even longer. Both times I was dissatisfied and got grumpy. Now I won't go to any hairdresser to cut my hair. I'll cut on my own. It's so annoying when your hair takes 6 to 12 months to grow gorgeously and hairdressers just impose their opinion and cut your hair short in minutes.

      Trimming from the bottom layer only is what’s helped me. Essentially letting it grow a little bit and then trimming the ends bluntly. Also dusting split ends and individual curls on higher layers so they remain healthy as they grow!

    SAME, on so many points. I have shiny ringlets underneath, and rough wavy, very coarse hair at the crown. A stylist with tight curls thought that cutting that section would make it spring up but it doesn’t, it just ends up looking straight. I’ve found that the longer it gets, the more the waves work themselves into curls. And yes, that last layer gets so beat up. Strength in numbers! I actually like my hair to feel heavy. If it’s too light I feel like I don’t have any 🙃 Great timing because I’m growing out a HORRIBLE butcher job from spring (by someone who supposedly had textured training). So thanks for the insights as I try to figure out what I want once I do decide to get a new cut. Did you say that you get face framing done? Oh and those grays...they stick straight out with zigzag ends. The future is frightening

It's already grown two inches thank God my hair grows super fast . Eventually I will have to cut my length to match the length of the top layer to get one length again.. My top layer is so poofy and drives me crazy and my hair is no more curly than it was when it was long and heavy so I'm definitely growing it back out .

    Hi Jannelle,
    I know you're not around just now but just in case you still get notifications I wanted to say something.
    This video makes so much sense to me!
    I found it about a year ago & I come back to this & your home haircut video often.
    I've been cutting my own hair using various different methods for several years but yours is the only one I now always come back to.
    If I went to a hairdresser now, they would cut almost all my length so I'm growing it on a go slow, trimming maybe 2 or 3 times a year.
    I'm not even dusting much just now, trying to grow everything out to one length so I can then snip some layers in again.
    I've hair some hair loss through menopause too so have been using Plantur 39 Tonic which is really helping get growth back but my layers are all over the place! Lol!
    But, I am determined!
    I trimmed yesterday & even though my lengths are still thin, a little cut of a couple of inches really helped bring a bit of life back.
    Just, please, don't ever take your channel down!!
    I have watched so many of your videos, love your hair & love how you come across.in your videos 😃
    If you do see this, I hope you are well, it would be great to see you come back but I totally respect you for not posting anything new, but yeah, please don't remove your channel!
    Very best wishes to you & yours!
    Jill xx
